Live performance by Eric Carbonara and Alexander Turnquist

Guitarist/composer Alexander Turnquist uses his 12-string acoustic as his main tool in creating dramatic, emotionally engaging music with an experimental approach from the onset. Alexander Turnquist's latest disc, "Like Sunburned Snowflakes" focuses on intense guitar-harmonics wafting over you in minimalist waves. Guitarist Eric Carbonara take a slightly more traditionalist approach to his playing, incorprating Roma-Flamenco styles but infuses the music with noise & electro-acoustic elements. The Paradise Abyss is Eric Carbonara’s newest album, a solo effort written on a friction peg flamenco guitar. Both Turnquist and Carbonara were slatd to play Pete's Candy store in Brooklyn with David Copenhafer that Monday night.

Hello, Irene! Hi, Sean and hope you're all righted now. :)
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 12:03pm pierre:

oh that's what I call a nice start

Bonjour Irene
Mon. 2/18/13 12:03pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hey Irene and hello to one and all, hi Kat, Van, DCE, Matt and the rest of the merry crew
Mon. 2/18/13 12:04pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hey Kat, yes, I'm the right way up
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:05pm Sem Chumbo:

OK, calming music to fiddle my taxes by. Appreciated.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Has anyone scored any Russian meteorite fragments on e-Bay yet?
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:06pm kat330:

Bon chance, Sem! I finally was able to put the paperwork nightmare behind me last Thursday.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:08pm kat330:

@Sean: It will be a nice surprise if Van shows up. It's a federal holiday over here, so most of the U.S. daytimers on the lists are not at their commenting desks.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid (xBSI):

For godsake, don't touch those meteorite fragments. You'll turn into a photosynthesizing fiction author that cannot self-edit to save his life.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:09pm kat330:

@Ken: Was going to, but then after doing our taxes last week, found we didn't have an extra $100k to spare. ;)
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:11pm kat330:

I imagine anyone remotely interested in the meteorite has already seen enough, but just in case not:
apod.nasa.gov...
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:11pm Sem Chumbo:

@kat330: thanks. Been a writer all my life and never so creative as when working with balance sheets.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:12pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Everybody! Getting set for some live music at about 1pm. Kat, thanks for the meteorite pic. Pretty astonishing that nobody was killed!
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:17pm kat330:

Yes, very lucky indeed. This music goes well with any endeavor (like lunch eating at the moment ;).
     Mon. 2/18/13 12:22pm 12539:

(Excited about the upcoming guests, and dejected that I have to step out around 1:30. I expect to be applauding from the archives.)
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:25pm Parq:

Irene during my second cup of coffee; how nice. Well, you'll remain on in the background, but I should start my day.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:25pm kat330:

@12539: Just be sure you're uninterrupted next Monday when Robyn's on.

Hi, glenn!
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:27pm Parq:

And Kat, that was great, the first really good footage I've seen, not mucked up with commercials and commentary.
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 12:27pm glenn:

damn! i'm in disguise.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:29pm kat330:

I didn't realize, Sem, you're doing Canadian taxes? Aw, that's likely a *breeze* of paperwork compared with US.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:31pm KP:

All here, keeping warm w/ Irene.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:32pm kat330:

Heard yesterday morning that The Washington Post debuted "The Truthteller," an application for fact-checking, and they're concentrating on tax reform to start. That should be interesting to follow.

Signature Bachman sound....
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:38pm Chris from DC:

Yeah, this is really nice.

so this happened I guess... twitter.com...
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:43pm Fuzzy:

@Cory: I'm confused -- are they selling the McBath Salts instead of the McRib now, or what?
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:44pm BigLankyGeordie:

Hia there Irene, listening from over here in England where its just getting dark and your show is making it a mega chilled-out dusk this evening, thanks. Love the show. Michael in County Durham
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:45pm kat330:

Currently wearing our FMU swag-shirt -- the lovely green with turntable. Feels very nice.

Say, did anyone else catch the nominated short animation of Maggie Simpson in "The Longest Daycare" last night (or before)? What a super sweet and delightful bit of craft!
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 12:45pm glenn:

i found this 17? year old girl on youtube, who does leo kottke stuff. she's amazing. www.youtube.com...

Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:52pm Mike East:

@kat330 - do you guys take turns wearing the tshirt?
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:53pm kat330:

@glenn: I'm convinced goats *are* humans merely transformed by some nasty spell.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:54pm kat330:

@Mike: Errrm, actually, I sort of co-opted this one. Philo got the last one, and this was to be his as well, but it's so damn up-my-alley, colorwise and logowise.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@kat330 - Yes, I saw the short. It was pretty good. I liked Baby Gerald's "instant art" and the surprise plot twist at the end.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:55pm Sem Chumbo:

@kat330: yep, Canadian taxes. US filing looks considerably more detailed, but we would kill for mortgage interest deductability here.
@glenn: CRA offers rewards for fingering tax cheats.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:56pm kat330:

Heh, thanks again, glenn! How appropriate for my zodiac+Vietnamese "Year of" signs combined. And there is (was?) a sound studio over in Louisville called RamCat.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:57pm Ike:

Kat, I caught most of that while waiting for Bob's Burgers (a hilarious show). Very graceful. It's a golden age for animation. Most people wouldn't believe it, but a cartoon called Adventure Time might be the best thing on TV... that is, if you like David Lynch-ian surreality mixed with comedy, tragic backstories, suspense, a bit of romance, and fart jokes.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:57pm kat330:

@Ken: Well, we won't discuss any spoilers, but yeah, just a nicely spaced number of sweet surprised throughout. :)
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 12:59pm kat330:

surpriseS not D'uh...
Mon. 2/18/13 1:00pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Just back from doing my shop at Tesco's, the chore was definitely made bearable with your show playing in my headphones, technology, marvellous, I get my groceries whilst listening to you 3000 miles away
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@kat330 - Also, when tomorrow arrives, the meteor video will have the date in its URL:
apod.nasa.gov...
Thanks for mentioning that a bit ago.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:02pm kat330:

@Sem: Yeah, well the mortgage interest deduction has never been something I could take advantage of, so I'll take the CRA regs over the IRS any ol' day. It simply should not be so complicated. I happen to be able to do our taxes myself, but not without considerable reading and research beforehand.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:03pm kat330:

Oh, thanks, Ken! Yeah, I was trying to figure out what the URL will be in the future, but the usual method -- clicking on the image -- didn't work as it is a video.
Mon. 2/18/13 1:03pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

I was listening to some Juana Molina last night and was thinking Irene hasn't played any of her material and here we are, marvellous and thank you
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:04pm kat330:

@Sean: Tesco, eh? Pick up any lasagna? ;)
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:07pm kat330:

@Ike Thanks for the info! Is Adventure Time on broadcast TV? We don't have cable and limited non-broadcast access through Hulu and Crackle.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:09pm Mike East:

I just heard about Adventure Time from my niece. I'll have to grab the dvds for my kid.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:10pm Ike:

Nah, it's cable. Cartoon Network. And they seem to require a cable subscriber password to watch it online. But the first Google result, though perhaps not on the level, is usually very helpful.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:13pm kat330:

TY again! :)
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:14pm Ike:

The earliest episodes are more kid-oriented. Unlike most cartoons, as the (kid) voice actor playing the main character has aged, the character has also aged. And the show has matured, and gets progressively more bizarre, romantic, and occasionally terrifying.
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 1:16pm northguineahills:

I'm a big Adventure Time fan, it's a mix of dadaist and sensical fun.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:17pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Today's performance is excellent. Great work.
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 1:18pm northguineahills:

Been faving the performance, myself.
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 1:20pm Braveness23:

B23 here! Hi all!
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:22pm kat330:

Lovely, lovely -- ack! sync on the adjective, Irene!
Mon. 2/18/13 1:24pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@Kat, think I will give the lasagna a miss!
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:25pm kat330:

Muse, Siren -- I appreciate the mythological allusions.

@Sean: That's the "mane" idea. :)
     Mon. 2/18/13 1:27pm 12539:

This is sounding excellent, but I have to step out - premature applause, and yet another moment of gratitude for the archives.
  Mon. 2/18/13 1:31pm Teosinte:

Beautiful and ever-more provocative. Loved it Eric <3
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 1:33pm northguineahills:

Carbona/Turnquist should collaborate w/ Josef Van Wissem.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:37pm Dave E:

Greetings Irene!
Mon. 2/18/13 1:47pm Adrian in London:

@Ike I saw Adventure Time in Spain, dubbed into Spanish, last December and it frazzled my tiny little mind!
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:49pm kat330:

Miguel put together a trippy trio of muse, siren and nymph.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 1:58pm BigLankyGeordie:

Outstanding session - wish I could head on down to the show tonight. 3000 miles of Atlantic might get in the way though :-) Michael in England.

Oh didn't know Eric is there too! Sorry
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:03pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Yair! Yes, they're both trading performances.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:03pm Ike:

Mike, that always puzzled me. Extended compared to what? A 7" single? Definitely not compared to an LP.
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 2:03pm glenn:

oh, kat. - dangerousminds.net...
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:04pm Mike East:

@Ike, yes, compared to a single. LP= Long Play, I believe.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:07pm kat330:

Aha-ha! TY, glenn! RT was a brooding teen if ever I saw one.
Avatar Mon. 2/18/13 2:09pm glenn:

i knew he was friends with hugh cornwell. i didn't realize they were bandmates.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:12pm kat330:

A wooed muse, a singing siren and a sinister nymph. Eric sure knows some nifty chicks. ;) More importantly, he and Alexander sure know their instruments! An excellent carnival of sound this afternoon.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:19pm Mike East:

I think acoustic guitar is my second favorite sound on earth, next to falling rain.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:19pm Mike East:

...so favorite man made sound, lets say.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:20pm Mike East:

...and these are some fine examples of my favorite man made sound...is what I was implying.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:22pm Mike East:

Pete's Candy Store - not for the claustrophobic.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:22pm kat330:

@Mike: I fully concur. BTW, what inspired your switch to the sea monster avatar?
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:26pm Mike East:

bob brainen played an excerpt from "It Came From Beneath The Sea." I asked what "It" was but didn't get a good answer, so I googled and found out. My avatar is what "it" is.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:26pm kat330:

Bears repeating here, I still would like to favorite a particular set within a DJ's show. Anyone else feel that would be useful? For e.g., like a star to click right next to "Live performace by ... " I'll write to Kenzo about it if there's interest beyond myself.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:29pm kat330:

@Mike: Thought it looked familiar. It is"Tentacles Across the Water" with pierre's. :)
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:31pm KP:

Much too involved in this to go to work. Could you make call for me.
Avatar    Mon. 2/18/13 2:34pm kat330:

I love the sound Kottke gets from his lowest strings.
