First typo of the day: the date on the playlist is wrong.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:07pm rrg:

Also, there's no link to this playlist on the WFMU home page. That's probably why I'm still alone here.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 3:07pm G:

Dates are often wrong. Ask anyone who's been on a few.
  Wed. 1/30/13 3:08pm Irwin:

It has been exonerated and fixified.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 3:08pm G:

The link just appeared a minute ago, rrg

Oh, and that playlist pic is by Lisa Hirschfield.

It's not even 3:30 and I look like hell.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:09pm Matt from Springfield:

Morgan to Monk! Ideal opening credits music for today's show.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:09pm rrg:

Ah, but are you the real Irwin? You're not logged in like G and duke and I, so there's no way to be sure.
  Wed. 1/30/13 3:10pm Alison Porchnik:

Yeah, and you didn't credit the photographer! S/he must have risked her/his life getting so close to that tangle of wild monkeys. Maybe she lost her life. It's the least you can do to honor her memory.
Wed. 1/30/13 3:11pm Listening Out There:

...I'll differ with RRG. I got here with a perfectly good home page link, and see "January 30, 2013," which is the same date here in my cell. :) (Though note that I am NOT registered on the WFMU site...therein might lie the problem...)
  Wed. 1/30/13 3:11pm Hell:

@duke: Puhleese! You make us look bad!
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:11pm rrg:

We don't know that you're the real AP, either.

But I think I've belabored my point enough.

"It’s 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and I look terrible."
Well, a swinging playlist will do that to ya.
  Wed. 1/30/13 3:12pm Alison Porchnik:

I think I'm real. Isn't that good enough?
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:13pm Matt from Springfield:

@LOT: Need to get registered and get an avatar! It's the newest "thing"!
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:14pm rrg:

@Listening: the errors were there before you arrived. But I may have been the only to see them. You'll have to take my word for it. It would be foolish of me to lie about it because I'm AUTHENTICATED.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:14pm Irwin:

Here's my face. GET OUT OF IT!
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:14pm Matt from Springfield:

@AP: I'm taking the Turing Test and I'm still not convinced. Run a script and execute a program that will activate your FS account and avatar, so you can fool us into thinking a real person is behind the posts.
Wed. 1/30/13 3:16pm Listening Out There:

MFS, I understand that's the way of the world. However, I have too many friggin' accounts as it is. In how many ways must we be tracked, I say? For now, I shall remain LOT anon....
Wed. 1/30/13 3:16pm Listening Out There:

Besides, I already have plenty to deal with in doing those math problems when posting. Oi :)
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:17pm Parq:

I think Irwin may be the very first FMU-FS member, at least that I've seen, to use an actual photo of himself as a 'tar.

What's an FS? Apparently I'm not as authentic as I assumed.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 3:19pm Caryn:

@Parq: what about Duane? Own photo there.

@Listening Out There I kind of agree with you. I like maintaining some degree, albeit small, of anonymity, even if it is only anonymous as perceived by me. I don't need *another* online profile to maintain & be identified by.

I had to look Dias de Septeimbre up on the interwebs after a coworker came in asking who it was.
I looked them up on Grooveshark and they translated their name (or maybe Google Chrome did it automatically) and in english, the band's name sounds less exotic.

Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 3:57pm Ike:

Agreed @DS, but that's not even close to the worst modern faux-country that Irwin has played. That one was bordering on tolerable actually, though still slicker than a greasy used-car salesman.

@Stanley - thanks for that!

@Carm - yes, unfortunately, 1D seems to be her favorite at the moment. She does however enjoy the records I spin as well, so all is not lost.

I don't appreciate you playing rhythms blatantly ripped off from the Beach Boys "Sail On Sailor"! Take it out!

@Mike: Nothin' you can do to stop young kids from liking those pop monsters--just have the assurance that good records are forever, the kidz pop will rapidly become uncool and purged from iPods and Radio Disney everywhere.

"Where But For Caravan Would I?" .. a question Irwin asks himself every week for a while, it seems.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 4:33pm G:

Caravan reminds me of other semiforgotten southern UK prog bands of the early 70s. Camel, for example. Their 2002 album A Nod and a Wink was pretty nice. Complete with a 9-11 song, "For Today"

Thanks for the reassurance. All Things Must Pass. (also a great record)

@Droll: I didn't comment on "evil mashup-doers", because that really depends on who does mash-ups and how well they do a particular one. Now THIS I'll agree! EVIL mash-up!
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 4:37pm braveness23:

@EAS No, it's just another weird mashup
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 4:38pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

I mentioned this before but here it goes again. Back in college we played a drinking game where we listened to Van Halen and had to take a sip every time Dave did his squelchy holler.

holy crap.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 4:39pm Matt from Springfield:

On the other hand, this combo of songs is obscenely juxtaposed in a way that makes it kind of funny. The worst mash-up I've heard on FMU was probably RIAA's "Sweet California Girl O' Mine" - yes, GnR with the Beach Boys. Totally not necessary or pleasant.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 4:39pm Mike East:

I imagine that Might Mike must have giggled himself into a coma when he was mixing that.

Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 4:41pm Droll:

MfS, Downloading some software to let you play two songs at once doesn't even pass the sniff test. I don't think extracting the stems out of a RockBand video game makes someone clever or creative and it sure as hell counts as stealing.

I don't think you want to pick this fight with me.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 4:41pm Matt from Springfield:

Agree, Caryn! I wouldn't have known about that slick late 70s/80s prog band without Julie intro-ing me to them. Robert Plant tells WFMU to "Camel On!"

Hello Kitty as well! Glad it wasn't the end of the world, I must clutch a plush toy in one arm and a tall bottle of whiskey in another. Seems appropriate somehow :)
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 4:44pm Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: People take Rockband stems and make mashups out of that? No, I don't mean to endorse that kind of laziness. I like mashups mixed from individual tracks. GHP, RIAA, Party Ben, Team9 and others are great at doing them.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 4:44pm rrg:

This is even odder if you're listening in headphones.

Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 5:00pm Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: Most of them started mash-ups in the early 00s, before those games were ever out. They probably took individual tracks off the CDs using (probably Apple) software.

As for licensing, I don't think the labels issue licenses at all, unless it's for a track for their own albums (e.g. "Rapture Riders"). I got all their tracks posted on their websites for free, they're not making any money from those.
  Wed. 1/30/13 5:03pm ?:

But I can use some Cialis GMMM!
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

Mash-Up started up as a DIY bedroom thing. It usually just combining two songs along without a lot of filtering.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 5:11pm Mike East:

Oh damn, I want a muffaletta. One of the only New Orleans specialties i didn't get to try when I went down there.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 5:12pm Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: That "Tom's Diner" remix from the early 90s has been called the first mash-up. So Suzanne Vega is the Mother of the MP3, and the Mash-Up!
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:13pm Droll:

MfS, That's my point: The musicians who spend years learning to play, work hard writing songs, and have to buy expensive instruments are getting nothing for all their effort. And you're right, neither is the crook who used the tracks.

If you can explain why this is a good thing, I'm sure the musicians not earning anything will benefit from your insights.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:14pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Droll, the simplistic answer is exposure.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:15pm glenn:

if marc bolan was from nola, carburetor could easily hve been muffaletta.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 5:15pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: What?!? You were in NOLA, and you DIDN'T try that?? That's one of my priorities. An Italian deli makes a version of that around here, pretty good olive-spread Italian sub but I want to try the original article (at Central Grocery: en.wikipedia.org...)
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:17pm Droll:

AW, Exposure of what to who? Zero times 100 million is zero. I can't take 1M YouTube views to the grocery store to buy dinner.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 5:18pm Mike East:

@Matt - I didn't have a car, so I was at the whim of my hosts to get around. according to them, po' boys where the top priority.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 5:21pm Matt from Springfield:

@Droll: In any case, piracy of the original tracks is what's really cheating musicians out of earnings. If you think mixing stuff around for your own and listeners amusement should come with a publishing royalty, why not a royalty every time you play a song?

But I like artistic recombining of existing fragments to make a new thing--it's what folk music has done for generations. Most on WFMU love the concept of mash-ups, but you can always make an argument against them.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 5:22pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Po' boys are a priority! I've never had one of those myself. Did you go to little shacks and corner shops where they make them fresh? A co-worker says that those places make them the best.

Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:36pm Droll:

MfS, Licensed streaming services (Spotify, Pandora, etc) pay a royalty every time you listen to a song, so that's already the norm. Film and TV have always paid for music that way. It's not my idea and it's not new or weird.

Traditional fusion by a musician playing a a mix of styles on a musical instrument (possibly from yet another style) is not comparable to taking credit for using the laptop your parents bought you to do homework on to play a loop sampled from someone else's song.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:36pm glenn:

don't sweat it, g. most people who think they are good multitaskers actually suck at it.

@conrad: He recorded "You Are The Sunshine of My Life". Can be found on a Golden Throats comp.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 5:38pm G:

The consult is oral on the phone. that kinda kills streaming, and i gotta listen to the person and think about what to say next, hard to think of what to type, too, on a totally unrelated topic! :(
