At a dinner in NY in 2011 for West African leaders, there was some low-key entertainment in one corner of the room during drinks. Moving in that direction to better listen, my jaw dropped when I saw that Toumani Diabate was the kora player. He noticed, and his broad smile became even broader. There was never an acknowledgement by the hosts that one of the world's top musicians was in our midst.
