At the suggestion of Listener Hugo from Norway, tonight's program features blues, cajun, zydeco, swamp pop and rock 'n' roll recorded by J.D. Miller at his famous studio in Crowley, Louisiana. Thanks Hugo. |

@Doug: This 'Ouisi-ana theme reminded me: a set of old Cajun folk you played recently had the "LSU French Waltz". Did Louisiana State U have an official French song, or do you think that was that just a title the band called it?
|
Tue. 12/18/12 6:20pm
listener james from westwood:
that track listing is one impressive stack 'o wax.

Tue. 12/18/12 6:21pm
Doug Schulkind:
@Matt from Springfield Not sure. I doubt that Nathan Abshire's LSU French Waltz had any official connection to LSU. Of course, EVERYTHING in Baton Rouge, and pretty much all of the southwestern Louisiana prairie country is completely connected to LSU in one way or another. (Most residents of Cajun Country could surely never afford to go there...) |

There's an unusual Thai-Cajun fusion place near me; not purist Thai cuisine by any means, but what delicious *comfort* food it makes! They make pad thai with BREADED shrimp, and CRAWFISH! And a CRAB fried rice that's out of this world!

@LJFW: Greek (and all Med) food is a particular weakness of mine as well, and a concentration of Greek restaurants. Fortunately there are enough Thai places in a straight line here!

There are quite a few "legitimate" (non racist) Trahan records. I refuse to play 'em. One of the compilations I'm playing tonight has Trahan on it and it makes me queasy even thought I'm not playing him. |
|
Tue. 12/18/12 6:53pm
Matt from Springfield:
The producer of Johnny Rebel? I HAVE heard of this guy before, this sounds familiar: "He professed to enjoy African-American blues music more than any other musical genre, and he even penned blues songs under the pseudonym "Jay West" (a name he used to disguise his race)." So many racists profess a liking of black forms of music, what a shame that social environments lead people to like music and scoff at the very culture that created it.
