A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  Tue. 12/11/12 10:07am C#:

Hi Trouble, I love your show and have been listening for quite a few years. If you haven't already heard it, "In the Land of Dreams" by the House of Lords is shares the charm of "Black Fjord" and I highly recommend it. You can find it in the Rubble collection #15.
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:08am βrian:

Hey! New vocabulary: gobe-mouche (flycatcher).
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:09am C#:

is that some thinly veiled critique about communicating in more than a one-liner?

Cheers from snowy Turku!
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:13am ffrr:

I saw Dave Brubeck several times, firstly in the 70's and lastly in 95. He played like a monster throughout his career, hammering out those block chords even with arthritis. His compositions bridged the gap of jazz and progressive rock using odd meters and intricate harmonies. Along with drummer Joe Morello, such a major influence for me personally.
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:17am Cheri Pi:

Ooooo this is nice, Troubs I've been listening the whole time!!

  Tue. 12/11/12 10:25am Cecile:

you got the Cherry Tree Carol by Shirley Collins floating around? That's a funny and seasonal song.
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:27am Jennique:

Good morning Trouble! Went to a party last weekend wearing some ole Docs and had a stranger approach and ask, "Do you like punk?" Been a long time since anyone ever asked me that. Made me smile.
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:29am Cecile:

that's awesome, Jennique.

I like the image a lot. For some reason it reminds me of Octavia Butler's fiction...
Tue. 12/11/12 10:33am Titus in GA:

Very sweet, Jennique! sounds like you had an awesome weekend. i need to rock out the Docs soon.
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:33am dcp@:

I wear Docs a lot and people just look at me like I'm nuts...dammit.

hey jennique, cecile! today's artist is lorna simpson from the ebonies series
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:35am Cecile:

it is beautiful and powerful.
Tue. 12/11/12 10:35am tim from champaign:

I totally dig Octavia Butler's writing. Right now I'm reading Margaret Atwood's "Crake and Oryx".
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:39am Jennique:

I had to google Octavia Butler. What would one consider her best work? She described herself as "comfortably asocial—a hermit in the middle of Seattle—a pessimist if I'm not careful, a feminist, a Black, a former Baptist, an oil-and-water combination of ambition, laziness, insecurity, certainty, and drive."
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:40am john:

Hey Trouble, I recommend the Lemonheads' "Stove".
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:40am ~L:

Cookies!
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:41am βrian:

There are some decent low-fashion stoves out there for ~ 2k.
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:41am Cecile:

I actually told my husband about it, calmly and without apparent bias just to see his reaction and he's usually one with a thick skin about stuff, and he's all "You have got to be kidding me! who does he write for again?"
Stoves and other appliances are if you want exactly what you want. We paid as much as a big monster fridge to get a smaller one with a bottom freezer and a lower height.
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:41am Jennique:

Trouble - bake something really stinky so it will taint everything else you bake from here on out. Maybe a gutted fish? Some brie? Garlic bread?
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:42am person:

browwwwnies of awesomeness, herbaly infused awesomeness
Tue. 12/11/12 10:43am Titus in GA:

i would start very modest, Trouble. Maybe a pie? Peach Cobbler?
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:43am Cecile:

I've read some of her short stories. Haven't tackled the patternist series
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:43am mmmm:

banana bread
  Tue. 12/11/12 10:44am Cecile:

just toast some bread in there. You dont' want to get it all sticky and gross. THat's what the cookies are for.
Tue. 12/11/12 10:46am tim from champaign:

Jennique - I'd recommend starting with Clay's Ark or Dawn. What's cool about Octavia Butler's series' is that they are not chronological and work as stand alone novels.

this song very refreshing!
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:15am Vivian:

@ it is Pierre. We're fortunate to have two firepits in our backyard. Though I hope the temps get down to normal. We're above average which is creating havoc with the plants' cycle. 60 degree weather is fine for spring - not December!!!
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:18am turbiecito:

hi there from buenos aires :)
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:19am pierre:

I'll totally follow your advice @Trouble !

@Vivian : 60 degree !?! In which part of the world are you again ?

  Tue. 12/11/12 11:32am Cecile:

did you like it, Brian?
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:33am Vivian:

@ Pierre - in Atlanta, Georgia. Today's high is the low 50's, dropping down to the high 30's. But this weekend's forecast includes 61-62 as the high, mid 40's for the low. The highs really should be low 50's!
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:33am Jennique:

Trouble - the new exhibit here at AMNH is FOOD. No joke. It even has a tasting kitchen inside it.
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:35am nycmark:

Cecile, not sure if 'like' is a word to use. Captivating maybe. I am still trying to take it in. See it if you get a chance.

Did you sea Searching for Sugarman? What a fantastic film! Great story, well told. Awesome music.
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:39am E+P:

Hurray for Rodriguez! I'm hoping Patrick is listening.
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:39am Cecile:

Brian, I did already.
I think I had a similar experience - it was visually arresting, and stunning considering it was filmed on a tiny budget with non-actors. But I admired it more than I liked it. It didn't feel like real people - it felt the people were symbols.
Avatar    Tue. 12/11/12 11:39am trouble:

thanks for the good words nyc mark, titus and trim hunter! no my stove is not swanky, that is the prob, no cash for the oven flash. although if i had an extra 10 grand i would travel, not buy an appliance!
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:39am erella:

Opps - should have mentioned that the Sugarman film is about Rodrigues.
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:41am Cecile:

my friend, who is from NOLA, felt a stronger connection to it. hes the one who got us all to go - his bro-in-law did sound on it I think.

yes eralla, great pic! i fell in love with that song after seeing that film
Tue. 12/11/12 11:42am Brian in UK:

Cecile - good points. As the director was trying to film it through a six year olds eyes it was always going to be hit/miss.
Tue. 12/11/12 11:45am Brian in UK:

Cecile, like when the place was on fire she hid in a box not trying to escape.
Tabu was kind of disappointing too.
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:45am Cecile:

Exactly. But wasn't her performance great? And the dad, too. He never acted before- he was a baker for the catering company that fed the crew!
Tue. 12/11/12 11:49am Brian in UK:

Stiil got the image of her puffed out defiant cheeks.
Do you think the cook was her mum?
  Tue. 12/11/12 11:51am Cecile:

I thought that is what it was, and i also thought it was a dream.
Tue. 12/11/12 11:56am Brian in UK:

The scene in the brothel reminded me of the '67 film version of 'Le Grande Meaulnes'. A place you go to but afterwards are not sure if it really happened. As you say, a dream-like quality.
Tue. 12/11/12 12:00pm Brian in UK:

This is divine, Cecile. If you can ever find it. Brigitte Fossey is a dream as Yvonne de Galais.
http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0064389/
  Tue. 12/11/12 12:01pm Cecile:

I'll have to see that, Brian.
I didn't think it was a complete success, but its ambition and creativity were really exciting.
