Off to class and errands so I'll have to rewind the archive later.. Have a good morning everyone
Fri. 12/7/12 10:00am
tim from champaign:
Cecile, have you been following the "right to work" hornswoggling going on in the Michigan legislature?
Fri. 12/7/12 10:23am
Cecile:
no, but it's been on the table a whole lot. I think it's a terrible idea. Michigan's problems aren't because workers have good protections under the law.

![]() Hi everybody~! |
Fri. 12/7/12 10:27am
DCE:
@ Cecile--I'll be thrilled if we don't end up under the feudal system again...seems like that's the way it's headed
Fri. 12/7/12 10:27am
Cecile:
It's a lack of vision that started in the 60s with unions, management and government. They thought the auto golden goose was never gonna die, and boy were they wrong. And there was no plan B.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:28am
Cecile:
I wish there was no need for unions. But there is. I find it interesting that Wal-Mart and fast food are asking for representation.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:30am
Cecile:
I have my issues with Minnesota, but there is a difference between a mining/colonizing mentality (Michigan) and a farming one (MInnesota). Michigan started as a farm state, but then they found timber and copper and iron and when that was gone, the companies left. The farmers may save Michigan in the end.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:31am
Chris from DC:
Great version of "Sally" here.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:31am
Cecile:
and the brewers! | |
Fri. 12/7/12 10:33am
βrian:
How about playing Michigan, My Michigan at 25% speed? It's a dirge, these days.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:34am
listener gary:
I moved to the West Village in 66 almost straight out of Kansas and I went right out and bought a T Monk recording so that I could get hip right away. Frankly I didn't know what to make of it. But I stayed with it and now 50 years later his work can make me stop everything I'm doing and just LISTEN to it. Great stuff! Thank you!
Fri. 12/7/12 10:34am
tim from champaign:
Basically, a "right to work" initiative was passed through the house and senate in quick succession yesterday somewhat out of the blue. A good number of union protestors showed up at the capitol building and got booted out by police. I can't help but feel it's a good number of West Michigan weenie politicians giving the finger and the shaft to Detroit.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:38am
tim from champaign:
Yeah, brewing is the only legit growth industry in Michigan. That's awesome. You can't go 3 feet in Michigan without tripping over a new Michigan brew. My friends started a 15,000 plant hop farm this year located between K-zoo and GR and it went swimmingly for them.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:39am
Cecile:
Yeah, probably West Michigan and also the UP, too. It'll come back to bite them, though.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:40am
Cecile:
listener gary, we have a MOR jazz station on our DirectTV, and we usually half listen, but when Monk or Mingus come on, they sound as fresh as ever, and we have to stop and listen.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:42am
Cecile:
tim, that sounds great - hops are definitely a huge growth (no pun intended) industry. I remember Europe having a blight a few years back and hopsp rices going through the roof. Some home brewers I know started growing them in their backyard.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:43am
βrian:
I have the sense that west Michigan is slowly coming of age. This ad, remarkably, didn't go over well even there: http://youtu.be/fh8yWcmUB1I
Fri. 12/7/12 10:45am
βrian:
Hops will come back to bite you. Little love-bites in your ale.
Fri. 12/7/12 10:48am

Cecile:

Fri. 12/7/12 11:11am
βrian:
Is WCBN still buried in the basement of the SAB? Not very accommodating to the claustrophobic!
Fri. 12/7/12 11:12am
DCE:
I can work all day to this.
Fri. 12/7/12 11:12am
Cecile:

Fri. 12/7/12 11:15am
βrian:
Cecile, did you cross paths with Lee W when you were there? Or Jim R? This was some time ago ...
Fri. 12/7/12 11:16am
Mike East:
That Jack Rose that you played earlier was excellent. what I caught of it, anyway. I certainly must check out his catalogue.
Fri. 12/7/12 11:16am
G:
I have relatives by marriage working in medical marij. on the west coast. The feds still harrass them. I guess the ultimate fix is that voters have to figure out how to start voting for actual freedom, not for image.
Fri. 12/7/12 11:17am
listener gary:
just thought I'd let you know...I never miss this program. Nice!!
Fri. 12/7/12 11:18am
G:
For the uninitiated, "SAB" means the Student Activites Building on the main drag at U of Michigan. I remember it all too well!
![]() |
![]() Ah yes, I too have fond memories of that dank little CBN complex at the SAB. |
Fri. 12/7/12 11:19am
Cecile:
I don't think so. I left Ann Arbor and WCBN in 1987
Fri. 12/7/12 11:20am
βrian:
Just off the main drag, actually. Behind the "Salmon Loaf."
Fri. 12/7/12 11:21am
