Mon. 12/3/12 10:42pm
Uncle Michael:
In the earliest days of the Residents...they were still "just these artist friends of mine" to an uncle of mine. I explained to him they'd become kind of important....this was a conversation around '81 or so...and he showed me his copy of the original Santa Dog ep and told me he thought it had just been an audio christmas card from his friends.

|
Mon. 12/3/12 10:54pm
Uncle Michael:
My uncle has been involved in the arts his whole life, jazz musician, filmmaker, gallery owner, etc. If you've seen the Sun Ra film Space Is The Place, he produced it. I actually had a long exchange today with Doug Schulkind about him because they're both Oberlin guys and turns out they had a mutual friend that one knew 30 years after the other.

Mon. 12/3/12 11:12pm
Uncle Michael:
I'm sure different people have different tastes and I'm also reasonably sure there are good nights and bad nights. I last saw Neil at the Bridge School benefit the year McCartney and Tony Bennett headlined. Keep in mind my uncle wrote like he was 22...because he was back then. John Seavers was a guy I never heard if till today. But he was part of my uncle's scene back in '53-'55-ish. A townie the same age that later, Doug brought in to be on the air when he was in his 50s. Doug told me it was a fight to get a non-student on the air and that John wound up jazz director at the station. John had made the trip with my uncle and others to Canada for THE Massey Hall concert in May of '53.

@Uncle Mike, yeah, I owe Doug a bit for my beginning in radio -- by the time I was living in Oberlin as a townie going out with a student, it was totally normal for "community members" to have shows, and indeed, it was mostly community members throughout the summers. So bully to Doug for fighting those fights. He has mentioned that episode to me in the past, which must be why John's name is vaguely familiar to me. It can't be said too often: may God bless Doug Schulkind repeatedly and lavishly. |

I think it will have to involve selling other records to cover the price! @Uncle Michael, that phrase is getting more common around here -- there's a real resurgence in new releases on cassette. |

Uncle Michael - my theory is that the prevalence of perfectly duplicable digital music has increased people's appreciation for the imperfections of physical and analog media... you may know there's also a recent resurgence in vinyl sales, i think its a similar thing.
