always been put off by South American psyche by once buying a Traffic Sound LP and discovering to my horror that it sounded just like the worst garage record you could hear.
What went wrong?
Avatar 12:14pm
tonyc:

You bought the wrong Traffic Sound record! Some of them are quite good....
  12:14pm
Loren:

Pledge - I really liked the Los Blops box set, a Chilean group. From fuzz to psych folk
  12:16pm
Loren:

Hey No worries... I'll download it later for my commute.

Jeremy:

Hi Tony and WFMUniverse. I am leaf floating in the stream.
  12:17pm
PLEDGE PIN:

where were Traffic Sound from?
also was there a true prog scene there as some people say in Argentina?
Avatar 12:19pm
tonyc:

Hey Jeremy, you old leaf!
Pledge Pin: Traffic Sound were from Peru. The prog/psych scene in Peru probably wasn't as extensive as it was in Argentina, but I'm no expert.
  12:20pm
Doug S.:

@Loren
Your work may have a firewall. When you double-click on the pls file, it should open in your iTunes or Winamp (or whatever music player you have on your machine.)
  12:21pm
Carmichael:

Hiya Tony. Is today's topic Spelling Bee rock?
Avatar 12:21pm
tonyc:

@ Pledge Pin: In any case, I'll mostly be playing Peruvian experimental music the next two sets, with just a smattering of psych for seasoning.
  12:22pm
Ike:

Howdy. I like this one a lot.
Avatar 12:23pm

tonyc:

Hey Ike! The full name of the piece is "Electrocomposition for Ike 1"....
  12:29pm
valkoinen kukkaruukku:

i have a compilation from Spanish Munster Records of Peruvian Underground, full of hits: Pina y sus estrellas "Los extraños" is really danceable.
  12:31pm
PLEDGE PIN:

Yeh Tony,
I always view that scene as basically pan pipe country with a few bands who tried to sound like the Beatles. Not aware at all that there was any true classy psyche, prog or experimental music in South America.
So I look forward to being educated by you today!
  12:32pm
valkoinen kukkaruukku:

Then Los Saicos "Demolicion" is a total garage hit (but maybe they are from Chile, i'm not sure) and, from Peru are punk band Narcosis "Sucio Policia" is a punk hit also ;)
Avatar 12:34pm
tonyc:

@ valkoinen kukkaruukku: Don't know those tracks -- thanks for the tip!

As for the pan pipe overload, I blame Simon & Garfunkel.
  12:41pm
Jeremy:

Los Saicos are great! Totally unhinged, esp considering it was 1965. They are on the Back To Peru garage comp and a 10" was also reissued.
Avatar 12:43pm
tonyc:

Talking of psych and such, the second half of today's show will veer off in that direction -- tho mostly north of the border.
  12:47pm
PLEDGE PIN:

Tony, the cd I bought of Traffic Sound‎ was – 68-69 by a slightly dodgy reissue label called Background. The CD contains the first two LPs recorded by the psychedelic Peruvian band. "A Bailar GoGo" was recorded in 1968 and "Virgin" in 1969 and done as a crappy sounding cd reissue in 1993 whne I decided to buy it.
The label put out other rare albums by bands like Ithaca but I think they were all bootlegs, unremastered etc.
Avatar 12:49pm
tonyc:

I've got a bunch of Background CDs myself. They didn't do a good job with the Ithica -- the more recent legitimate reissue (on Lion?) sounds much better.
  12:51pm
Jeremy:

This CD seems well worth Peru-sing.
  12:52pm
BSI:

Hi, Tony!

BSI: Working on your Yoda impersonation, are we? :)
Avatar 12:55pm
tonyc:

Hey Kat! Long time no read....
  12:56pm
Jeremy:

Does it seem that cultural influence is less obvious in early electronic music, perhaps because so much of it was produced by academic studios to engage with a smaller international community? Or because the nature of the technology inspires more universal concepts, experimentalism, futurism, etc?
Avatar 12:56pm
tonyc:

Long tome no read neither....
  12:56pm
BSI:

greetings greetings... late as usual but insanely happy in the ear-holes. ... and yo Kat!
  12:57pm
valkoinen kukkaruukku:

In the recent past, in Spain we used to consider South America as a poor, 3rd world continent. But actually during big part of the xx century they were much more developped culturally politically and economically. and psycodelically ;) funny
Avatar 12:59pm
tonyc:

@ Jeremy: I get what you're saying about the "international" aspect of early electronic music -- but I also think it was more personal sounding. These days a lot of electronic music really sounds the same because people are using the same software.
  1:00pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I was relatively recently hipped to the incredibly rich and diverse array of avant garde music from Latin America, from Prog to New Wave, electroacoustic, etc. Much of it retains some traditional Latin American flavor, as well
Avatar 1:01pm
tonyc:

@ Jeremy: And to answer your either/or question: both!
  1:02pm
kat330:

Yeah, tony, October was a rough patch. Laying low, licking my wounds.

[sorry telephone interruption there]

So we hope Philo's suggestions aided your trip to Finland?
Avatar 1:02pm
tonyc:

Hey Ricardo! Guess you don't have to alter your name today!
  1:02pm
BSI:

This comp is devastating my corpuscles.
Avatar 1:06pm
tonyc:

@ Kat: Sorry to hear 'bout your wounds -- hope they've been licked clean! And, yes, Philo's tips did come in very handy -- many thanks!
  1:09pm
kat330:

Some have been. Others will leave a scar. But such is life, yes.
  1:12pm
Jeremy:

Tony, you have a good point, electronic music really was more personal and unique before synthesizers even entered the picture and it was still trial and error with assorted components.
  1:13pm
Jeremy:

Of course, technology is just a tool and will still reflect the personal in the right hands.
  1:16pm
kat330:

@Jeremy: Speaking to that, Neil Young has discussed some bits of that (I'm only in the earliest pages of his new autobio), like a friend who would file down his guitar frets, build amps from various components. Those parts are an interesting read.
Avatar 1:17pm
tonyc:

@ Jeremy: True DAT (tape)!
Avatar 1:19pm
tonyc:

Here comes the Peruvian psych (they're tuning up now)....
  1:20pm
BSI:

I think of the experimental scene in the '80s -- not too long ago but before laptops, iPads, synth apps, etc.. and all the precious gear, infinite cables, fragile hand-soldered objects (it must have taken so much longer to set up for a gig, but the memory fades) --

I can sympathize with the ease of travel with the modern stuff, just a laptop, iPhone, bang-zoom, but it sure takes the "mad scientist" out of the equation...
  1:21pm
Uncle Michael:

Oooh...nice cover.
Avatar 1:22pm
tonyc:

Hey Michael! Of which cover do you speak?
  1:23pm
northguineahills:

Well, one can tell things are really over between me and my ex-fiance, as I'm cooking w/ real sopressata, not the veggie type, in our apt.
  1:24pm
Uncle Michael:

Some People Never Know, Tony.
Avatar 1:24pm
tonyc:

Hey NGH! Your comment makes me happy and sad at the same time.
  1:24pm
Jeremy:

@Kat: Did Neil mention the robot arms he built to turn the knobs on his amp so he wouldn't have to bypass them for his stage setup? Talk about a purist.
  1:25pm
northguineahills:

Thanks, tony!
  1:26pm
Uncle Michael:

Hi Everyone. I've been listening since the beginning of the show (mostly) but just got sat down at work.
Avatar 1:26pm
tonyc:

@ Uncle Michael: Of course! Silly me -- for some reason I thought you were talking record jackets....
  1:28pm
Uncle Michael:

I can't say I think much of the Wild Life record jacket. I hope no one covers that cover.
  1:30pm
kat330:

@Jeremy: Probably haven't gotten far enough into it for that. His writing is rather, um, S.O.C. He'll mention something as it comes to him. Apparently he had no editor on this. It shows.

But he did mention: "our old tube recording console known as the Green Board (I think it is the best soundboard ever).... "The Green Board is full of history. The Beach Boyhs' Pet Sounds and "Heroes and Villains," Cream's Disraeli Gears, the Monterey Pop...." etc.
  1:32pm
listener james from westwood:

sopressata is one of the ingredients on a type of pizza made by new york's two boots pizza. sweet sausage, sopressat', and cheese, no sauce. they call it the "newman" pie (a la seinfeld). a-maaaazing. (not unlike this past 90 minutes of music!)
  1:32pm
Uncle Michael:

Kat, does he mention where the green board lived? I know someone that may have known that board a bit.
  1:33pm
kat330:

Hey, ngh! [Something I forgot to add to my latest note: PLEASE read my track text for each you listen to? It might well explain something you're wondering about/critiquing. At the root site title.]
Avatar 1:33pm
tonyc:

@ Uncle Michael: Yes, those tartan pants are sort of horrifying. I had actually forgotten that "Some People Never Know" is a Wings song -- I should revisit the original.
  1:33pm
kat330:

Boyhs' oh Boys....sigh.
  1:35pm
kat330:

@UM: Um <g>, I think it is/was in his recording barn? Again, I'm only in the early pages, and he jumps around in chronology.
  1:35pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm recovering from a period of Wings obsession. I like Wild Life but I've been majorly gripped by At the Speed of Sound and Venus and Mars.
  1:37pm
northguineahills:

Will do kat!
  1:37pm
kat330:

"The Green Board is sitting twenty feet away here in Feelgood's (a car IIRC), looking like a museum piece." But I suppose that was at the time of writing.
  1:37pm
Jeremy:

@Kat: I think Uncle M meant where Neil got the board from...might have been Western Studios in Hollywood, I know a lot of Pet Sounds was tracked there.
  1:37pm
northguineahills:

In addition to a bike accident (happened later in the night after I got dumped, yes, alcohol was to blame)(haven't shaved in 2 months, waiting for the upper lip to heal), my landlord made me dismantle my garden for insurance purposes last month. Nice 1-2-3 punch there.
  1:40pm
Uncle Michael:

@Jeremy, I was mainly curious about what locale Neil had it in service when he was regularly using it. My engineer/producer friend may have had contact with it. He built/rewired/customized (something) Bob Weir's board. He'd been a house engineer at Wally Heider's and worked with all that crowd in SF and Marin.
  1:40pm
PLEDGE PIN:

oh dear Uncle Michael,
I think you are listening to the wrong show if you into them!
Used to have Band on the run myself and after a couple of plays, put the lp away for ever!
  1:41pm
Uncle Michael:

@ngh...ouch...that's the shits. :(
  1:41pm
Uncle Michael:

@PP...you're so, so wrong...about a variety of things.
  1:42pm
kat330:

@Jeremy & UM: Ahh, maybe, but I put away the Kindle now. He mentioned David Briggs if that pinpoints better.
  1:42pm

  1:47pm

Gotta run, I'll have to catch the rest later! Peace all!
  1:47pm
kat330:

@James: After I wrote it, I realized I have this mental block: IS it "laying low" or should it have been "lying low"?
  1:47pm
PLEDGE PIN:

Tony,
I have'nt done a song search but when was the last time you played a Wings track?
  1:48pm

I'm really diggin' this Chetro & Co.

Avatar 1:49pm

@ Kat 330: Yes, it's a wonderful single. The only thing they ever released, unfortunately.
  1:52pm
PLEDGE PIN:

the last Wings track played on WFMU was girls' school 7" by The Evan "Funk" Davies Show in Nov 2012!
Avatar 1:54pm
tonyc:

@ Pledge Pin: I've never played Wings and don't own any of their records or know them well at all -- but I'm perfectly wiling to believe there might be something there to like. Ya never know!
  1:54pm
Uncle Michael:

Girls' School is marvelous, fun, musical junk food.
  1:54pm
kat330:

@Pledge Pin: I do not have the same worship as you do in FMU/GTDR DJs being the only, or even the best, purveyors of taste. I've heard disparaging comments about some artists I like a whole lot -- like Neil Young, Van Morrison and John Fogarty -- and I was "attacked" for making my own disparaging comments about Rod Stewart. Live and Let Live (not Live and Let Die). :)
  1:55pm
Uncle Michael:

Man does not live on good nutrition alone.
  1:55pm

don't waste your time, its just silly love songs!

  1:57pm
PLEDGE PIN:

FO Kat,
Wings are worthy of critical panning!
  1:57pm
northguineahills:

I have plenty of Wings on vinyl... and I dig them a lot....
  1:58pm
kat330:

Just noticed there's a major "B" theme going on in this set (as in alphabet, not record side).
  1:59pm
kat330:

Real nice Pledge Pin. Didn't see anything in what I wrote to warrant your PP-ness. :|
Avatar 2:00pm
tonyc:

@ kat330: B-B-B-ut it was an accident, I swear.....

Man, I keep getting these messages about being "endorsed" on linked in -- what the?
  2:02pm
PLEDGE PIN:

yeh Kat,
don't compare crappy Wings to Neil Young, Van Morrison, and John Fogerty, their music has incredible depth compared to the ice thin, pop shlock of Wings.
  2:04pm
listener james from westwood:

@kat: i'd go with "lying low" and "lie low." to "lay low" usually means to strike down, so i'd use "laying low" for that sense.
Avatar 2:05pm
tonyc:

Hey, one man's wings is another man's wishbone ash, or something like that. No squablin'!!
  2:05pm
kat330:

I wasn't comparing groups. I was making a point about FMU DJs are not gods, and yet many seem to worship their opinions on all things related to music (and beyond). There are sheep on the playlists without tastes of their own is all I was saying.
  2:05pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm listening to a show where the host plays a song that's a cover of a song by another artist...and if I like the original artist, I must be listening to the wrong show?

It's inconceivable that a person might listen to lots of different music?

It's polite to tell people the music they like is junk?

It's not fantastical think what you think about other peoples' tastes matters?

Are you seventeen?
  2:06pm
kat330:

TU, James! I asked because I didn't think it seemed right after the fact.

Middle-school playground bullies should all have a separate playlist to themselves. I've a couple playmates to suggest for Pledge Pin.
  2:13pm
listener james from westwood:

kat, it's one of those things that seems like it ought to be one way, and sounds fine, but you figure there has to be a rule somewhere about it!

It's ok Kat. I'm unharmed. ;) If I feel bullied, I'll whine. I promise.

@Tony C: I thought the same thing about all those LinkedIn endorsements, wondering if I was running for office, wondering if I was expected to reciprocate, or something, getting endorsements from people I don't even interact with professionally, etc.

i'd rather write a short blurb endorsing someone on linkedin than click on a skill. i think the personal testimony would count for more than just a merit-badge-like race.

RE: Linked-in: The thing is, I'm really not even on Linked-in. I guess I joined one night in my sleep, but I've never done anything with my profile -- it has a life of its own.
  2:35pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@ james: I think you're right. I think the 'endorsement' thing has little meaning or value. It's like 'like' on Facebook, in fact, last time I visited LI, I was faced with a popup of sorts that I guess I was supposed to 'endorse' all these contact's skills, even some I barely had any real-life association with.
  2:35pm
northguineahills:

Thanks, Doug!
  2:40pm
listener james from westwood:

ricardo, it's probably their next effort to adapt other social media platforms' features to their site. recall they didn't used to have facebook/twitter-like status updates, and now they do. otoh, linkedin's been a help in tracking down expert sources and contacts for writing. so there's still some value there.
  2:43pm
Uncle Michael:

Hello Doug. Someone was picking on me. *sniff*
  2:43pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@James: yeah! It's weird! I've searched for things and have had it lead to a discussion on LI, so it is trying to be a media platform on its own. Kind of like how FB was just this thing students were using.
I keep thinking I need to pay attention to my LI profile, update it but then I rarely do. I don't know what it really does for me professionally. Probably just underscore how unemployable I am in real life.

i think it complements one's existing networking skill, rather than becoming a miracle gateway to networking ninja-hood. i'm a less enthusiastic networker than i ought to be, so i too tend to let it fall thru the cracks amid this and that. i'm sure they'd love to be the facebook of business and careers, with the exception that i think their stock is actually doing better than fb's. so the metaphor only goes so far.

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
It's going to take several hours to screw my head back on after this great show from Tony. Hope it's firmly back in place in time for GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME, which comes up live here on the Drummer Stream at 6pm (ET). Immediately following GTDS, you'll hear Jesse Kaminsky live with KAMINSKY KAMOUTSKY, from 7-9pm. I will be live from Pittsburgh; Jesse, live from Providence, Rhode Island. After Tony's show from Portland, well that's quite enough P-ing on the radio...

In the meantime, please enjoy these fine but flawed humans as they endeavor to entertain you, coming up next on your 24-hour Give the Drummer Radio...
