....or could be .. the FuZZ !!!!
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:03pm hamburger:

not really a Leonard fan, but will give it a try!
Wed. 11/14/12 3:04pm Matt from Springfield:

He's our man!
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:05pm Jess:

And he even stuck the landing!
Wed. 11/14/12 3:05pm Matt from Springfield:

@Tom: Sneak out the back, before Sgt. Friday books you!
Wed. 11/14/12 3:07pm Listening Out There:

I'm with hamburger. Call me Fries...
Wed. 11/14/12 3:12pm Matt from Springfield:

"Story of Isaac"--recently found out about this song, I love this!
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:13pm Irwin:

LC's father died when he was nine. He was raised largely by women.
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:13pm Alison Porchnik:

That may be a photo but I swear he's looking right into my soul. Silently judging...I think he just smirked.
Wed. 11/14/12 3:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh wow, didn't realize that about Leonard. Explains his ability to appeal to females!
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:20pm RISKY:

Happy to be hear.
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:21pm Women:

...and we're still raising him... ;)
Wed. 11/14/12 3:26pm Matt from Springfield:

"Key-hhotic"? Maybe "key-shotic", to keep the original pronunciation.
Wed. 11/14/12 3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Punk before punk!
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:30pm slugluv1313:

"Darlin', I was born in a suit" -- LOVE!
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:33pm Pine:

Never got super into Leonard Cohen but now I want to.
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:37pm Laura L:

@ Pine--to say well worth it is an understatement. There's a good documentary film on him too; I forget the title, but I recall some wonderful footage of him in the film during his travels as a young man; no doubt avail. on Netflix.
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:38pm dave:

the spector one is my favourite
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:38pm Pine:

Cheers I'll check it out, love this history :)
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:39pm hamburger:

I now wish I could read like Irwin does. If I did, I'd probably read a lot more books.
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:43pm hamburger:

Holy... Cow... Phil...
Wed. 11/14/12 3:44pm Matt from Springfield:

But you know, you haven't *really* made it until Phil Spector does that to you...
Wed. 11/14/12 3:50pm Listening Out There:

...maybe Gold Star Studios just brings that out in people. The Beach Boys recorded there...and they had to deal with Murray Wilson, their father...
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:55pm Caryn:

@Laura L & Pine: the documentary is "Bird on a Wire". It was originally made in 1972, but rereleased after being "lost" for decades in 2010. It is fabulous.
But here's a link to probably the first documentary about Cohen, made before he really started making music: http://documentarystorm.com/ladies-and-gentlemen-mr-leonard-cohen/
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:56pm Pine:

Thanks Caryn!
Wed. 11/14/12 3:57pm Listening Out There:

Do you think LC can do that with the dirty dishes in my kitchen?
Wed. 11/14/12 3:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Yes thank you Caryn! I'll take a look at that. Actually I'll take a look at that website in general, sounds good.
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:59pm G:

I just jumped Irwin from 20% to 38%. Last week on the board, I said I'd think about pledging, and I have. Thinking, plus some ongoing new work starting this week, plus some well-honed interpretive reading, all conspired to tip the balance...

Come on the resta youze peoplez.
  Wed. 11/14/12 3:59pm other david:

Ah some escapism, I needed this - thanks Irwin!

A horrible day in the old sod.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:03pm Caryn:

@Matt: yeah, I just recently discovered that website, and I was instantly drawn to investigate. Seems good.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:06pm Caryn:

Ahh, Cohen and Buckley... I could listen to either of those two sing for days on end.
Wed. 11/14/12 4:07pm Matt from Springfield:

@OD: Besides Mondays, the first part of Wednesdays tend to be the toughest for me as well. Irwin's show is the perfect "turning point" of the week!
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:07pm hamburger:

I also don't like horrible days. Especially ones in the old sod. You gotta just let them pass I guess. I'm not one to fight them off.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:08pm drewo:

Enjoying the show today Irwin. I still miss Jeff Buckley.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:09pm hamburger:

@Matt That said, Thank Gourd for WFMU! Some shows are highlights to look forward to no matter what day/time of the week!
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:09pm Caryn:

Of all the bootlegs I'd like to get my hands on, the two songs Buckley performed at the tribute concert for Tim Buckley are at the top of my list.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:10pm other david:

Definitely Matt! I look forward to this show a lot each week - even if it *is* on a Monday, so it's gotta be special :)

To be sure, to be sure hamburger.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:11pm hamburger:

interesting, opening question, Irwin, , ,
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:11pm G:

STDs? Only his county clinic knows for sure.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:11pm other david:

Monday? Good lord. Wednesday. THAT'S THE KIND OF DAY IT HAS BEEN.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:12pm G:

Getting humped by Humpday? It happens.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:12pm G W:

I live in a Stanton street bldg. on the L E S in which L. C. lived . Any info on the time period he lived here on the floor below my own?
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:12pm Caryn:

@od: for a while, I thought maybe you were trapped in a Groundhog Day-style time loop where it was Monday forever. That would certainly make a person feel depressed.
Wed. 11/14/12 4:13pm Matt from Springfield:

I too look forward to WFMU shows, no matter what the day of week it is now!
Wed. 11/14/12 4:14pm On Behalf of All Authors on Tour:

@GW: Simple. Buy the book! :)
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:14pm other david:

@Caryn: hehe. Mercifully though it's just further evidence of my minds decline :P
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:15pm slugluv1313:

LOVE the cat story :)
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:17pm G:

Re LC's following on the right side of the pond: It was my very very British classical guitar teacher who got me a sheet music book of LC tabs and had me learn some, in 1972. I still have it, in loose pages. Spine totally broke up around 1973.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:17pm hamburger:

LC got Game
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:26pm hamburger:

simple wikipedia: http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/WFMU
Wed. 11/14/12 4:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Teddy Thompson is a good singer--I was trying to remember if I've heard him before, then realized that he has a tone similar to Jackson Browne.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:26pm G W:

@ on behalf. Yes , i probably will but thought I'd submit a question for this show if you don't mind . There are too many authors these days.
Wed. 11/14/12 4:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Use color coded Post Its, to organize the themes of your questions!
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:28pm other david:

@hamburger: I always questioned the accuracy of Wikipedia and that page's lack of the word "awesome" only increases my doubts.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:29pm Wikipedia:

I'm an informal encyclopedia, not a PR firm for hire.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:30pm hamburger:

It's simple wikipedia / doesn't make it any more accurate, but hey! a lot less scrolling around than wikipedia wikipedia
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:31pm other david:

@Wikipedia: careful or I'm going to edit your description to "a PR firm for hire which, incidentally, regards WFMU as awesome."
Wed. 11/14/12 4:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Joshua Rifkin, baroque pop producer extraordinaire. Famous for the arrangements on Judy Collins' "Both Sides Now" single in '68.
Wed. 11/14/12 4:32pm Denise in DC:

Dammit. Work kept me away before now. Sounds like I've missed much of an awesome show.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:32pm Wikipedia:

"This article is semi-protected, in response to an ongoing threat of vandalism."
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:33pm other david:

@Wikipedia: <3
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:36pm Caryn:

How come my favourite singers keep ending up in monasteries? Cohen, Scott Walker,...
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:38pm hamburger:

@Caryn: Could it be the hymns?
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:38pm other david:

Question I'd like to ask Sylvie: if LC's finances had not been ruined by his manager/lover, does she believe he'd be doing as much touring as he has been?

And if not, what would she speculate Leonard would be up to these days instead.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:39pm Modern Times:

Just waiting for the LC Retirement Fund kickstarter appeal to appear.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:41pm Caryn:

@hamburger: well, of course Walker went not only for the solitude, but for the Gregorian chanting, but there aren't a lot of hymns in a Buddhist monastery.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:42pm hamburger:

@Caryn you'd be surprised if you'd seen what goes on in their karaoke nights...
Wed. 11/14/12 4:44pm Every Other Man:

What?? He never slept with Nico? Even I did.. ;)
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:44pm Caryn:

@hamburger: I think you're confusing the monastery with Disneyworld, which essentially turns into a leather S&M club after hours.
Wed. 11/14/12 4:45pm Matt from Springfield:

"Marrying cones of incense" and other things to attract Nico, to no avail.

Nico wanted her "toys" instead! :)
Wed. 11/14/12 4:50pm Rob from Seattle:

This show will be an archive gem!
Wed. 11/14/12 4:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Go Sylvie! Go ukes! Go FBR!
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:52pm Eddie Vedder:

Hmmph. Showoff...
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:54pm G:

Takes one to know one, Eddie :-)
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:54pm Ike:

Sounds great, Sylvie.
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:54pm hamburger:

woh
  Wed. 11/14/12 4:55pm other david:

This is beautiful, Sylvie.
Wed. 11/14/12 4:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Wooooooooo!! Wonderful, beautiful indeed!
Wed. 11/14/12 4:59pm Matt from Springfield:

But, unfortunately not the FMA--they don't generally let covers be posted there. So all the more reason to excerpt and play on another show here!
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:01pm other david:

Thanks for answering my question, look forward to picking up the book!
Wed. 11/14/12 5:04pm Matt from Springfield:

I couldn't say that about Phil Spector -- because I haven't *met* him :)
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:05pm Mike East:

Sylvie sounds like an absolutely lovely person. Thanks for bringing this to us, Irwin.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:05pm Corrections Officer:

@MfS: and you probably won't, Matt.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:06pm Ike:

Fortunately, the 9th St. PATH station has now re-opened. That's the closest one to Housing Works. About a 20 min. walk through the Village.
Wed. 11/14/12 5:09pm Matt from Springfield:

Amazing show! THANK YOU Sylvie! Thanks to Irwin, WFMU, and "our man" himself LC!
Wed. 11/14/12 5:10pm Denise in DC:

Beautiful show. Can't wait till the archive is posted so I can hear the whole thing from the beginning.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:13pm other david:

Ah this show somehow got even more divine, I love Beth's voice.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:14pm Liberty Girl:

:)
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:15pm AL:

Good to hear Beth Orton put down some of her usual lace and feathers.

But why nothing from The Future?
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:17pm Chris:

Bravo. Just Bravo!
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:17pm Andrew Waterloo:

Really enjoyed all the the older material.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:18pm Chris:

Oh and Hi Jac! Told you you would live this.

Shout out to a new FMU fan and longtime LC admirer.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:19pm G:

I need to call Cali. But I need to wait till 6
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:19pm G:

live, love
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:19pm Chris:

Ahem. Love this.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:19pm G:

:)
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:21pm G:

"but then something happened" famous last words!
Wed. 11/14/12 5:27pm how the hell do I follow that up department:

we approve!
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:31pm lewis:

spectacular!!
Wed. 11/14/12 5:34pm Matt from Springfield:

Nice baroque pop, first time hearing The Collectors!
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:34pm Caryn:

First the percussions, then the recorders... are you just trying to remind me of my orchestra days?
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:36pm Irwin:

@Caryn: I carried a freakin' bass drum around the HS football field. I'm a victim.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:36pm G:

I believe the ground has now been prepared for LC himself to do the show.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:38pm Irwin:

BTW, DE.L is yet ANOTHER great Angil & Hiddentracks-related project.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:38pm Caryn:

@Irwin: aw. With me, it was just carrying two metallophones and 4 recorders around.
Wed. 11/14/12 5:42pm Matt from Springfield:

All these Hiddenprojects from Angil & the Hiddentracks.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:44pm other david:

*tips hat*
Wed. 11/14/12 5:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Go david! Dare to Kildare!
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:45pm Caryn:

Irwin, do you mean the CPE are 14-year-olds, or that they've been around for 14 years? Considering the Langley Schools Project reference, I'm guessing it's the first one.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:45pm G:

I had to play acoustic guitar in Ensemble. And memorize choreography, too. I didn't mind the vocal harmony parts. I would change them up some, if I felt like it, and the director didn't spot it. :-)

But the brutal part was the outfit we had to wear. Let's just say: very 70s, very flyover. If that combo makes any cultural sense. Way beyond paisley.

Yeah, it was in Brasil, but it was a US curriculum school with an Ensemble director from **Indiana**.
Wed. 11/14/12 5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, they have President-elect Vermin Love Supreme at the UCB Theater!
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:46pm other david:

@Matt: No don't.. please.. avoid Kildare at all costs, for your own sanity :P
Wed. 11/14/12 5:47pm Matt from Springfield:

How'd you get such an early phone number, 8? The Old Codger's is right below that at 6--did you trade him something for that number?
Wed. 11/14/12 5:48pm Matt from Springfield:

@OD: Aw c'mon, Clay would be excited right now, telling you to have "PRIDE!" in that county, naming bands from there and singing their songs! :)
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:49pm Caryn:

@Irwin & G: The thing is, I have no bad memories of my recorder orchestra days, except for my continuing annoyance of how the recorder is viewed in general as some fake/kids' instrument that you can stick in anyone's hand and have them just blow into it without any technique. There's a technique, dammit! No wonder a lot of recorder players refer to the instrument as "flauto dolce" just to avoid having to always explain to people that it's a serious instrument.
Wed. 11/14/12 5:50pm Matt from Springfield:

I think Carmichael is the one who regularly brings this up, how "Texas is a great place to be FROM!" Maybe it's the same for you, david :D
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:50pm Marmalade Kitty:

nice piece of jazz, shaz..!
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:53pm other david:

@Matt: thank you for making me burst out laughing, sir :)
Wed. 11/14/12 5:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Kitty! Actually I could use some 90s Shazz beats dubbed over something right about now!

@OD: My pleasure! :)
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:57pm PhilR:

As an old guy, who has been listening for years, I want to say that tho s was a great show.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:58pm Caryn:

Yay, GG! You lovely Austrian lads, you.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:58pm G:

My sediments precisely, old guy.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:58pm Irwin:

Phil, do you want me to correct your typos? I have that awesome editorial power.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:59pm G:

The hand that edits the copy rules the world.
  Wed. 11/14/12 5:59pm other david:

Thank you Irwin <3
Wed. 11/14/12 6:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Memorable show! Very good showcase of LC!
