This show is Finnish? But it hasn't even started!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 11:47am tonyc:

No, no, I'm not Finnished with you yet -- not until we cross the Finnish line ... or until we all grow Finns.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 11:48am tonyc:

Hey everybody, should be a fun show -- picked up lots of great stuff in Finland -- but don't forget to pledge, if you can. FMU needs your help!
  Tue. 11/13/12 11:49am Adelia P.:

Grow Fins? Shall there be Beefheart?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 11:50am tonyc:

No Beefheart: Herringheart.
Tue. 11/13/12 11:54am listener james from westwood:

welcome back, tony! sounds like the hunting over in finland was productive! (no reindeer were harmed in the making of this playlist.)
  Tue. 11/13/12 11:54am charlie:

Tony attended the finest Finnishing school.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 11:58am tonyc:

Polishing off all the Finnish jokes, are we?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:00pm tonyc:

The Lapp of luxury.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:02pm tonyc:

It never ends! But I Lapp it up.
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:03pm charlie:

Lend me a Finn and I'll stop.
M.A. Numminen yay!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:03pm tonyc:

Greetings, Anchovy P.!
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:05pm BSI:

this I dig.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:06pm tonyc:

Hey BSI! There'll be a generous heaping of avant-herring today.
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:08pm Snortley:

It's lunchtime:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutefisk
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:10pm mark:

What a cowinkydink! I just downloaded some music by Juhani Aaltonen earlier.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:10pm tonyc:

Umm -- I've had lutefisk ... not this trip, but last year. Was the most horrible thing I ever ate. (Hola Snortley!)
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:10pm tonyc:

Hey Mark!
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:11pm BSI:

everybody was kung-fu Viking.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:12pm tonyc:

I had the lutefisk in Portland, by the way. Apparently it has served as a stand-in for NYC deli type whitefish out here.
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:14pm Snortley:

Jeffrey Steingarten, author of The Man Who Ate Everything:

Lutefisk is not food, it is a weapon of mass destruction. It is currently the only exception for the man who ate everything. Otherwise, I am fairly liberal, I gladly eat worms and insects, but I draw the line on lutefisk.

What is special with lutefisk?

Lutefisk is the Norwegians' attempt at conquering the world. When they discovered that Viking raids didn't give world supremacy, they invented a meal so terrifying, so cruel, that they could scare people to become one's subordinates.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:15pm tonyc:

It's prehistoric food -- pre-refrigeration at any rate.

Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:16pm tonyc:

Let's not forget that I'm trying to raise a few Finns for the cause -- please pledge if you can! Any amount helps us cross the Finnish line.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:17pm tonyc:

Hey Huck Finn!
Tue. 11/13/12 12:20pm Tasavallan obama Presidentti:

hello everyone,
gonna be another North European Son show!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:21pm tonyc:

T.O.P. of the morning to you, Tasavallan obama Presidentti! (My morning anyhow.)
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:22pm Huck Finn:

Hey! Got any of them Finnish murder ballads?
( "There's even a saying that if there was a wedding and three people were not killed, it wasn't a good wedding.")
Tue. 11/13/12 12:23pm Tasavallan obama Presidentti:

would have thought Sweden show should come first, their prog scene was miles bigger than Finnish?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:24pm tonyc:

Yes, but I didn't just visit Sweden! They'll have to wait their turn.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:25pm tonyc:

No murder ballads, no -- as far as I know, anyhow!
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:30pm Ricardo Montalban:

Uff da, Tony!
Tue. 11/13/12 12:30pm Tasavallan obama Presidentti:

Midnight in a Perfect World" by DJ Shadow sampled Pekka Pohjola's "The Madness Subsides".
Not a lot of people know that - can we guess whether Shadow paid royalties that were massive on his album - no1 world wide?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:32pm tonyc:

Uff da, Ricaarduu Montaalbanuu!
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:33pm Ricaarduu Montaalbanuu!:

Perfect! I was looking for a suitable Finnslation of my nom de plum but that works perfectly
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:33pm brysselistä manuel:

Hei Toni, hei everybody. Super show today, really like Finnish culture! I even learnt Finnish for 4 years (and can hardly say a word ;) Are you playing some Finnish tango ?
Tue. 11/13/12 12:33pm Tasavallan obama Presidentti:

Tony you've gone King Tubby or King Tony!
Tue. 11/13/12 12:33pm Brian in UK:

Hello Tony. Get outside of any smoked edibles?
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:34pm Ricaarduu Montaalbanuu!:

You'd think some of it would've rubbed off; my wife is 1/2 Finnish and where I grew up, there was a huge Finnish community.
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:35pm Doug S.:

C'mon you vowel lovers! Pleeedge!
Tue. 11/13/12 12:35pm Tasavallan obama Presidentti:

Tony looking forward to your pronounciation of Alkuasukkaiden
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:36pm tonyc:

Hola Maanuuel and Brian! No tangos, no. As for venturing beyond non-smoked edibles -- yes, I ventured straight past Finnish food. Ate African, Nepalese, etc. I loved Helsinki, but Finnish food wasn't a huge hit with me.
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:36pm MrFab:

All I know about Finnish music are surf bands like Laika & the Cosmonauts. They've got a good surf/garage scene there. Any on tap this morn, Tony? I LAIKA that stuff! (See what I did there?)
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:38pm Ricaarduu Montaalbanuu!:

Me too, Mr. Fab. Also those Aki Kaurismäki/Leningrad Cowboys films.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:39pm tonyc:

@ MrFab: no surf, no (and greetings!)

@ Tasavallan obama Presidentti: Wait until you hear me pronounce this Haikara track title!
Tue. 11/13/12 12:40pm Tasavallan obama Presidentti:

just thinking that - what does it mean?
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:40pm Ricaarduu Montaalbanuu!:

(reading the wikipedia entry on Leningrad Cowboys) apparently members came from an actual band called Sleepy Sleepers.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:41pm tonyc:

@ Tasavallan obama Presidentti: It means, "Somebody better pledge soon or FMU and this show will be FINNISHED!"
Tue. 11/13/12 12:41pm Tasavallan obama Presidentti:

band any way very Canterbury - sort of Hatfield and the very North!
Tue. 11/13/12 12:42pm Brian in UK:

Finnish Humour? Must be tough somewhere so cold.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:46pm tonyc:

Most Finns huddle together at the southern end of the country where it isn't TOO cold. Was mostly a bit above freezing when I was there -- not bad at all.
Tue. 11/13/12 12:46pm Brian in UK:

Got any selections from the Kimi Räikkönen joke book?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:48pm tonyc:

Don't know anything about Finnish yolk books, no.
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:50pm conrad:

Yeha, I guess Laika & the Cosmonauts would be the extent of my knowledge of Finnish music, too. Saw them open for, of all people, Ministry (late '80s/early '90s). Could have been a real car wreck, but fortunately the goth industrial headbanger-types there for Ministry were nice to those Scandanavian space doggies.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:50pm tonyc:

Hey, we need some pledges here to keep the radio/stream wheels greased. Somebody? Anybody? We need your help NOW!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:52pm tonyc:

Hiya Conrad! Hanoi Rocks are Finnish too.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 12:56pm tonyc:

Let me at least thank John of Hendersonville, NC who pledged weeks ago, between shows, but never got thanked. I'd love to thank someone else too!
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:57pm Hugo:

Yet to make it to Helsinki. Been fairly often to Turku/Åbo,though. Might we expect some Edvard Vesala or Raoul Björkenheim? Or even Juhani Aaltonen?
  Tue. 11/13/12 12:58pm Ike:

Hi! I dig that "Invisible Forest" there.
  Tue. 11/13/12 1:01pm Hugo:

My wife and some of her neighbours love lutefisk. I suspect they will get together for an all-evening meal fairly soon. As for me and the kids, we're yet to be convinced.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:01pm tonyc:

Hey there, Ike and Hugo! Glad to have you aboard.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:02pm tonyc:

@ Hugo: Edvard Vesala was in the band Apollo, who we heard earlier -- so, in answer to your question, yes, kinda!
  Tue. 11/13/12 1:03pm Hugo:

@Tony: Did you go to the Digelius shop in Helsinki?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:05pm tonyc:

@ Hugo: I did! Bought a few things I'll be playing today.
  Tue. 11/13/12 1:07pm MrFab:

Hanoi Rocks! Ha, I used to live down the street from one of the members, Andy McCoy - he would sit in a drunken stupor in his front yard, strumming a guitar, wearing rock star pseudo-gypsy clothes, holding a perpetual yard sale, while his wife yelled at him from the kitchen window. He sold me a bunch of records 'n' junk. I saw him play in Iggy Pop's band. A friend of mine convinced him to sell his gold record Iggy gave him for, like 5 bucks or sumthin.

He tried to sell me a wahwah pedal or fuzz box or sumthing for $45, but I was broke at the time, and said I couldn't. Wife's voice from the window: "It's not just any fuzzbox, it belonged to international rock star Andy McCoy!" And from that point on, my friends and I always referred to him as International Rock Star Andy McCoy.

And that is my Hanoi Rocks story. Thank you.

That The Sperm sounds better then the stuff I have from them.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:07pm tonyc:

There are a *lot* of record stores in Helsinki, and they seem to be hanging on just fine, from what I could tell.
Tue. 11/13/12 1:12pm listener james from westwood:

good to hear records are still in demand up there. always kills me when bookstores and record stores go under.

HURRAY!! Thanks to James for his generous pledge! You are a prince among men!!

PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT...
Listening James from a gilded cloud aloft in Nirvanic Continuum, has sent down a mighty morsel of sustenance. We shall keep strumming our lyres for you, Brother James.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:16pm tonyc:

Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:19pm tonyc:

Oh, and delayed greetings to northguineahills!
Tue. 11/13/12 1:19pm listener james from westwood:

my pleasure. i realized i had poker winnings i haven't put into play for 3 years. time to send them fmu's way before some snake fills an inside straight and drags that cash across the table.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:20pm tonyc:

Thanks again, James! FMU needs all the poker winnings it can get.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:23pm tonyc:

In fact, we'll even take embezzled funds, bank loot, and coins found under sofa cushions.
Tue. 11/13/12 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

sometimes i wonder if it would be more lucrative to hit atlantic city than to renew a cd at today's pallid interest rates. win one hand, boom, i've beaten every bank in the state.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:27pm tonyc:

I'm a terrible gambler from the point of view of being sporting: as soon as I win anything, I quit.
Tue. 11/13/12 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

sport, shmort; that's the way to play. walk winners!
  Tue. 11/13/12 1:36pm Hugo:

I don't have much Finnish myself, but I do have one by Ulla Pirttijärvi who represents the other legacy of Finnish music, that of the Sami of the far north with connections across the borders with Sweden and Norway.

Love this Jukka R. piece. A car alarm went off outside and meshed perfectly with it.....
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:48pm tonyc:

I wish all car alarms sounded like Finnish electronic music.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 1:51pm tonyc:

PLEDGE-O, PLEDGE-O, PLEASE-O! I'm digging all the comments, but we need some pledges too!

Edvard Vesela on drums on this Apollo track...
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 2:01pm tonyc:

  Tue. 11/13/12 2:02pm Bas, NL:

Hei Tony! Se on jotain aivan muuta! Anteeksi olen vaihtanut niin myöhään .. Or at least that's how Google translate would say it.. ;)
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 2:03pm tonyc:

Hei Bas!! I'll have to un-google-ize that!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 2:05pm tonyc:

Google sez: "It's something else entirely! I'm sorry I have changed so late." Something tells me that's not what you originally punched in!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/12 2:06pm tonyc:

Hurray BAS!! Many, many thanks for your super-generous pledge!
  Tue. 11/13/12 2:06pm Bas, NL:
