good wednesday, amanda and all scenarians!
  12:03pm
listener james from westwood:

i don't have the constitution to listen to ken's updates just yet. will do so after a bit more caffeine as the archive goes up. will instead celebrate here before confronting wfmu's reality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Amanda:

That sounds good to me, LJfW. I myself have been seesawing between reality and distraction pretty rapidly. (What's new?)

We have an influx of people from our shore office hogging all the bandwidth so I'm listening exclusively on the phone now.

Not that it makes a difference.

Hey, you played Nazz! I just saw Todd Rundgren on Saturday night. Fun, fun, fun!
  12:35pm
joe:

BArry Mills who was one creator of Ruddy and GoGo was at times a producer for Space Ghost Coast to Coast as well as doing voice work for ATHF and Sealab 2012. He also produced the Bob Clampett show and The Popeye show being responsible for restoring many cartoons to their orginal format.

goddamn, sorry to hear about the ichiban stream. was wonderful for parties. sad to have djs stranded sans a channel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Amanda:

Cool! Thanks for that info, joe -- I knew there was some connection but, as usual, was a little muddy on my facts. Rudy & GoGo is very much worth everybody's YouTube-hunting time.

@Carmichael -- awesome! Lucky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Amanda:

LJfW -- they are able to do some remote programming, so the stream is not dead, but yeah I agree about those DJs.

Hi Doug! Please don't complain about my grade-grubbing. Hi efd! Hope all is OK with your house, cats, etc.

Jack -- we are very fine, can't you tell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
Amanda:

Brian -- I have never played a Zapple record, but that's not to say I never will.
  1:26pm
efd:

Thanks Amanda, we were very fortunate - no damage or flooding at all; just had to deal with power being out for about six days.
  1:26pm
Uncle Michael:

Doug, do you think Amanda is working up to her potential?
  1:32pm

We just can't have these slacker students bringing down our school metrics. :P

Records! Yesss...

Uncle Michael:

Who is Dr. Janet? This is cool. I'm learning things.
  1:33pm
Doug S.:

What're you guys talking about? Amanda is the teacher and we are the students. I slipped my granny smith on her desk when I shuffled in.
  1:35pm
Carmichael:

Aahh, the Records. I was in Korea when Starry Eyes came out. With no radio or TV, I bought the LP based solely on the cover. When we listened to it, my friends looked at me strangely, as if to say, "Should I like this?" I eventually came around to the great album it is.
  1:35pm
Uncle Michael:

I've been listening to Kursaal Flyers and reading Will Burch's Ian Dury biography. I guess I have The Records on the brain.
  1:35pm
Granny Smith:

Got it made, got it made, got it made, I'm hot fer teacher
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm

I guess you could call Dr. Janet a supergroup? Anyway, I'll talk about them soon...
  1:42pm
Brian in UK:

@Uncle Michael Have you read 'No Sleep 'til Canvey Island' by Will Birch?
  1:43pm
efd:

Sounds like a supergroup to me!
  1:44pm
Uncle Michael:

@Brian, I ordered a copy from a bookseller in the UK back in September and I just emailed them to ask them wtf? ;-)

I don't feel tardy

You know, some might say that WFMU, via Give the Drummer Radio's model for remote radio/streamcasting, has pioneered a new path for broadcasting. When WFMU went dark, both its transmitters down, its phone lines dead, a mountain of critical equipment fried by the flickering brownout of power before the shvitz hit the fan — in the middle of all this calamity, WFMU was able to get its broadcast up and running via the Drummer Stream's streaming capability.

With my huge digital library and the ability to DJ from my home studio, I was able to help the station get back on the air about 14 hours after the station went off the air.

Your past support for WFMU and Give the Drummer Radio are what made this able to happen. For that I say THANK YOU.

Now it is time to come to our aid again. A critical piece of equipment, one which allows me at GTDR HQ here in Pittsburgh connect remotely to the stream's hardware/software back at WFMU has been destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. For now we have to manual coordinate the hook-up in a fashion that is not sustainable over the long term. Your contributions will IMMEDIATELY PROVIDE FUNDS FOR REPAIRING THIS VITAL PIECE OF EQUIPMENT.

That is all. (Sorry I shouted.)
  1:55pm
Carmichael:

Dr. Janet info I found: "Dr. Janet. Spearheaded by Gary Lee, the group was further bolstered with axe/bass slinger Matt Sweeney of the then active Skunk (who you really should check out), and in years to come, Chavez and Zwan. Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan also straps on a bass, while drummer Lyle R. Hysen, formerly of Das Damen fleshes out the ranks. For better or worse, Dr. Janet's "Ten Years Gone" ain't the Zeppelin tune, but "Starry Eyes" is The Records power-pop classic for the ages."

SteveL:

Dear GOD work is irritating. Just sitting down. Don't they know Amanda is on NOW?!
  1:59pm
Work:

we HEARD THAT
  2:01pm
Carmichael:

Sounds like Mark Knopfler is playing guitar back there. But probably not.
  2:02pm
SteveL:

No. really. I'm getting everything done. Please don't stop paying me.
  2:03pm
Work:

Back to work, bub. Listen to anything, but FUCKING WORK. That is all.
  2:04pm
SteveL:

I hear and obey oh kind provider.

[mumble, grumble, bitch]
  2:09pm
Brian in UK:

@UM I did read it through the library. Airmail from UK to USA is 7-10 days usually. Poor service from the shop.
@Doug S I was wondering if there is an option for additional streaming to compliment the radio broadcasts; should have put that to Ken at his SoTS speech. Check your homepage, Doug, made a small deposit (the cleaners will tidy it up later)
  2:09pm
Uncle Michael:

I just met this show but I think this show and I should go get coffee.
  2:11pm
Uncle Michael:

@Brian I'll have to track down another copy. I've been burned.
  2:11pm
Brian in UK:

@UM the show has several brothers, just thought I would mention that. Have you seen the old man?
  2:12pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Dammit! Stuck in meetings until just now.
What did I miss?
  2:13pm
Uncle Michael:

Rich Corinthian leather.

@Brian, he got it from Rickenbacker. ;)

I never heard this live version of Rene before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm

I am kind of a sucker for Walk Away Renee in any form.
  2:33pm
Brain in KU:

@UM Was Rick Enbacker in The Searchers? Thought it was Mike Pinder. Excuse the sad Brit humour.
  2:33pm
SteveL:

Guessing you've sung along to Walk Away Renee in the past? Neat, following with Monks Hate You. Works for me.
  2:35pm

Later folks, love the crackles, keeps it real like this station.

@SteveL Love me some Left Banke...just never heard that (possibly fake) live version before!

Uncle Michael:

Pirate radio pioneer, Les Paul!
  2:43pm
Ricardo Montalban:

For some reason, whenever I hear In The Mood, I seem to remember some David Lynchian moment. Didn't a character in Twin Peaks have some kind of freakout during that song?

I'm sure I have sung along to it many times... and sung it to myself in the absence of any backing music...
  2:47pm
Carmichael:

Ricardo, I believe Laura Palmer's dad flipped out while slow dancing to a big band song. I think it was Pennsylania 6-5000 or that stupid Mares Eat Oats song.
  2:49pm
SteveL:

Awesome.
  2:49pm
Ricardo Montalban:

You're right, Carmichael! Thanks to obsessive fan sites, I can look that up. It was Pennsylvania 6-5000 in one scene and in another he flips out doing a manic version of Mares Eat Oats...
  2:50pm
Uncle Michael:

Nice choice, this...Amanda.
  2:50pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Me and the missus went on a Twin Peaks binge this summer - she had never, ever seen the show before but we ended up sputtering out interest-wise very early in Season two.

82% of the time, Leland Palmer was freaking out in one way or another

Not too many Yanks are familiar with PP Arnold. But I've heard that version.
  2:56pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm a geek. I love that version.
  2:56pm
Carmichael:

Oh, Big Jim Sullivan just passed away. He's responsible for (among many other things) the guitar solo to Alone Again Naturally.
  2:59pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@Amanda: Someone once referred to scratchy records as sounding "well-loved" and it's always stuck with me. Probably owing to growing up with records, whenever I hear a fuzzy sounding record, the sound sort of endears me to it.
  2:59pm
listener james from westwood:

many thanks for this show, amanda. reminds me of why fmu's so great.

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Be absolutely rock-solid sure to tune in to the Drummer Stream tomorrow at noon to enjoy another Busy Doing Nothing with Charlie Lewis.

Wish I could list all of the brilliant artists queued up on the stream to entertain you following Amanda's show, but Hurricane Sandy destroyed the equipment that allows me to access the stream remotely. So your guess is as good as mine.

Give the Drummer Radio runs 24 hours a day. Keep listening and enjoying!
  3:01pm

I wish GTDR had live shows all of the time.
