Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Listener comments!

  11:09pm
Marmalade kitty:

Hello Clay, hope all ok with you guys there. There's no internet connection, 128k or flash, here in uk.. All the best for the night ahead x
  11:17pm
Marmalade kitty:

There's no live streams, but the archives seem to be working!
  11:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Marmalade Kitty! :)
STILL no live streams, power seems to still be out. Can they check into this playlist on a laptop or tablet? Their website is still up--and their Archives too?
  11:51pm
Marmalade kitty:

Good to see you Matt! Maybe Clay will comment at midnight when the show is meant to start..?
  11:54pm
Marmalade kitty:

I'm listening to last weeks Dusty show
  11:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

It's a beautiful thing, thsese playlists and Archives...a year ago the website and streams were down late at night, knocking out Julie's Black Tape for a Blue Girl live set--but when the website was back up, voila! The Archive was up, uninterrupted! Even a time-stamped playlist beginning at 3 am! So I'm glad there's no single point of failure here!
  11:56pm
Marmalade kitty:

How are things by you, Matt? Is your power supply still ok?
  11:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@MK: That was a great one--just tonight (check the Radio Free Culture archive) they interviewed a Livestreamer, Tim at that same event.

Well, a 5 minute outage this afternoon, and two brief "blips" this evening, so fingers are crossed I won't be interrupted again...!
  11:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Just lotsanlotsanlots of rain here, some fierce winds. NYC/NJ on the other hand is really getting pounded right now.
  11:59pm
Marmalade kitty:

17 sizzlers! hahaha! :)
  12:04am
Matt from Springfield:

The Dusty Show with Clay Pigeon has begun!
Listen! That is...once the power comes back on!
  12:09am
Listener zero:

Reporting in for the internet-only hurricane party!
  12:10am
Marmalade kitty:

I don't know how it works with power cuts, Is it likely to be restored tonight, will it just reconnect or will it require maintenance..?
  12:12am
Marmalade kitty:

someone can just flick the switch back on, right...? o.O
  12:13am
Matt from Springfield:

Listener zero, now it's an Internet-only hurricane party! Wooooooo! :)
  12:14am
Marmalade kitty:

Hi LZero! Where are you?
  12:14am
Jay/ London:

morning clay morning all
  12:14am
Listener zero:

Listening to the archives seems an okay option. Last night I was listening to the Glenn Jones show during the music parts of Ken's filling-in. @Marmalade kitty: I am in Germany.
  12:14am
Matt from Springfield:

Manhattan's in deep (perhaps literally) trouble--WFMU, if they're likely, are getting their power from somewhere in inland Jersey, and it's just a matter of reconnecting the circuits running towards the Hudson.
  12:15am
Skirkie:

So this is basically an old school AOL chat room, but with math.
  12:16am
Matt from Springfield:

Zuhörer Null! Didn't know you were in Deutschland! :)
Native German or just listening from there now?
  12:17am
Listener zero:

Native, and listening from here, begrudginly.
  12:17am
Matt from Springfield:

@Skirkie: The spambots are killer robots, but they're too stupid to do basic math!

Morning/night to Jay and Skirkie as well!
  12:17am
Marmalade kitty:

Hi Jay, Skirkie!! :)
  12:20am
Listener zero:

Got peeps in Upstate NY. Gov Cuomo tweeted that there were almost 1.6 million without power in NYS at 11 PM. Crazy.
  12:21am
Skirkie:

I feel like I'm the only area in Jersey City with power right now.
  12:22am
Julie:

is there a show here? or just chatter?
  12:23am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey, um, Skirkie...I wouldn't want to burden you by going out in this rain, but could you stretch a couple miles of extension cords from your place to Studio A??? :)
  12:23am
Julie:

everyone plug into Skirkie's house!
  12:23am
Listener zero:

What do you mean, "just" chatter?
  12:23am
Matt from Springfield:

Just "the only chatter that matters!"
Hi Julie!
  12:24am
Marmalade kitty:

Hi Julie! How are things by you?
  12:24am
Julie:

I meant it with respect!
  12:25am
Julie:

I'm good. My place is by the Hudson river, so late last night I moved farther inland. Good here, flooded road where I live. (minor, from what I've found out)
  12:25am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: You're away from the floodzone I hope? Still in that undisclosed location?
  12:25am
juanrapido:

Damn power issues. I was looking forward to hours of "theater of the mind" with Clay.
  12:25am
Julie:

Yes Matt, but I am eerily close to that dangling crane
  12:26am
juanrapido:

We're high and dry in SF, in more ways than one. We got plenty of towels, let us know if you need any.
  12:27am
Listener zero:

I wish there was a safe way to make that dangling crane a permanent fixture (no pun intended) of NYC. It looks kinda charming.
  12:27am
Matt from Springfield:

Don't stare at it! You may have telekinesis, and crash it down!!
  12:28am
Matt from Springfield:

@Juan: Good time to start that towel mail order business! Start shipping dry towels in Ziploc bags to the East Coast!
  12:29am
Marmalade kitty:

wonder what Clay and the guys will be up to at the station..? candle light?
  12:29am
amEdeo:

Hi everyone! I am listening to the Hurricane Irene fill-ins in lieu of show tonight. Fun/soothing but a little confusing whenever Julie or Clay gives a hurricane update.

@Julie: There's gotta be some kind of plan of action for taking that crane down... right? Right?
  12:30am
Skirkie:

They can't do anything with it until the wind dies down.
  12:33am
amEdeo:

Oh wow. Of course... hadn't really thought about the logistics, or really anything beyond the whole DANGLY METAL DEATH FROM ABOVE part. That makes sense.
  12:33am
Julie:

amEdeo was that you in the kitchen Sunday afternoon? Last I heard Therese was trying to get a little sleep, Clay I would imagine is staring at the board waiting for it to come to life. The only cranes I know about are the Shaws.
  12:35am
Listener zero:

I think it's great that the playlist is up and running, though. :-)
  12:38am
Julie:

Good time to donate to our fundraiser, btw, only two more days!
  12:39am
Matt from Springfield:

A small but important consolation, LZ!
  12:39am
Skirkie:

The only way I can think of getting the crane down is by setting up another crane, but I'm not really a crane guy.
  12:40am
Listener zero:

Skirkie: I think setting up another crane is out because of the wind.
  12:41am
G:

Stream is still 404 file not found, from my end
  12:42am
G:

Seen this? Jersey City Waterworld

https://twitter.com/PANYNJ/status/263089494805327872/photo/1
  12:42am
Listener zero:

I wonder if I should call in and ask Clay whether he is okay.
  12:46am
amEdeo:

@Julie: That totally was me! I was going to introduce myself, but then I felt like maybe I had waited too long and would be interrupting your conversation. Sometimes my brain is a SILLY SILLY place. Anyway, hello! Now we are meeting! Sort of!

Always good to imagine the Clay Pigeon in his natural habitat.

@LZ: You could try, but I'd expect that the phones went with the power. But I could be wrong!
  12:46am
Listener zero:

This is is crazy, too (about 18 seconds in): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAqYZ433TeQ
  12:47am
Matt from Springfield:

@G: Yeech, the whole rail system is getting drenched!

Now (speaking of amEdeo and his playlist photo), if only someone had the foresight to put packs of red dye in that elevator before the station closed! ;)
  12:47am
Julie:

Yeah, Gaylord was like Who's that guy? I Said I dunno..I tried to wave but you were worlds away. nice to non-meet you!
  12:50am
sFrances:

Warm wishes from RVA to y'all! Had WFMU crew in my thoughts all day/night.
  12:50am
G:

Probably anyone at the studio is busy seeing if they can figure out how to get some kind of broadcast back, stream or overair....
  12:50am
Listener zero:

Also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiyhF_GIQlI&t=40s
  12:51am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: I still need to listen to that Archive, but standing-O for your post 60s Kinks selections! You *did* play "Starmaker"! "Better Things" is great...and the last set is Solid Gold!
  12:51am
G:

I thought it would be like Irene, all media hype. But yeah, that Battery Tunnel flooding video was pretty convincing.
  12:51am
G:

This is a comments board for a show that can't actually happen.
  12:53am
Julie:

@Matt thanks! It was so much fun!

We dodged a bullet with Irene, it seemed some unlikely we'd make it twice.
  12:53am
Listener zero:

I am listening to a Three Chord Monte archive and having a grand old time. Also, breakfast.
  12:53am
amEdeo:

@Julie: Oh No! I definitely would have responded had I seen you wave. I was in the midst of editing a set of terrifying karaoke I recorded for my show. Good to finally non-meet you too!

@Matt: HAH. Oh boy. Someone needs to get you a job in city planning. (and so everyone understands, Matt is referring to this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v414/chicopancakes/shining_zps62979a9f.gif)
  12:56am
Jay/ London:

is everyone ok at the station ? thinking of you all
  12:56am
ERD:

Hang in there Clay, everyone!
  12:57am
kata:

hey y'all -- watching storm footage and hoping everyone is OK...
  12:58am
Listener zero:

jesus... "entire city blocks on fire in #rockaway. channel 7 has footage of beach 114 & RBB still in flames. heard beach 129 is on fire. this is hell. " https://twitter.com/katie_honan/status/263135903705341952

Also, the NYU Med news are just plain awful.
  12:59am
Pidge:

I've had my cell off saving battery power. Station is all dark now. Emergency lights off. I'm fine. Hoping power comes back. Flood waters from Hudson came up Montgomery St. About half a block away. Pretty surreal. On a high ground island of sorts surrounded by water, but safe and dry. I was just ready to go on when the place went dark. Had REO cued up! Thanks for your nice comments. Signing off again to save cell power. Always remember. Pidge
  1:00am
Pidge:

Therese crashed out upstairs. Can't get home either.
  1:00am
kata:

hang in there Clay, hope you have some candles and bourbon ;)
  1:01am
amEdeo:

Be well, Clay. Hope you're managing to stay warm.
  1:02am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for checking in Pidge!
Best of luck to everyone at WFMU, and I hope everyone in the surrounding areas are safe.
  1:02am
Jay/ London:

you got any food water ?
  1:02am
Listener zero:

I had to laugh when Ken opened WFMU's emergency kit with Clay on the air earlier and it had a bottle opener in it (but no bottles).
  1:03am
sFrances:

Will try to find some REO to blast in your honor,Clay. You're worth the sacrifice ;) hope you get some sleep at least, always remember!
  1:04am
Listener zero:

At least 5.3 million people are without electricity across 11 states affected by superstorm Sandy, according to a CNN tally
  1:04am
Julie:

always lots of water to drink at FMU, and last year we came in with our own food, I'm sure they stocked up on the way there
  1:07am
Jay/ London:

That good to know Julie
  1:07am
Listener zero:

heh: https://twitter.com/StationMgrKen/status/263101122800136192
  1:08am
G:

Lights have flickered a few times here in central Brooklyn. I was thinking we were about to go offgrid. But still lit up.

If so many are without power, it could take days or a week for people to get the juice back. My brother was without power for days in Maryland after Irene. The other side of the street was on a different grid, so everyone ran an extension cord to their neighbor across the street to save what was in the refrigerator and freezer.
  1:09am
Listener zero:

WFMU's "family" twitter list is gold tonight: https://twitter.com/APMike/status/263070252940795905
  1:25am
DJKG:

OMIGOD I LOVE THAT YOU GUYS ARE HERE POSTING WHEN WE'RE NOT EVEN ON THE AIR!! WFMU LISTENERS ARE THE VERY BEST!!
  1:26am
G:

Eventually, Clay could post up the playlist and archive of the show he didn't get to do. Not sure I'm joking there...
  1:27am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Kurt! That we ARE! ;)
Hope you're doing okay.
  1:28am
Listener zero:

G: See Matt from Springfield's 2nd comment on this playlist. Also, I gotta go to work. Take care & be safe, everybody!
  1:30am
Matt from Springfield:

Take it easy Listener zero! Hunkered down and staying safe here!

@G: The difference with that set however, was that the station had power, and was broadcasting on the Air. It was the streams (and the whole website) that were down. If everything's black there I'm don't think so.
  1:32am
Caryn:

Ah, the "playlist without a show"! It was bound to happen.
  1:34am
amEdeo:

Have a good one Listener zero!
  1:35am
air:

am i DEAD
  1:36am
DJKG:

hey matt! i'm safe and sound tho worried about the fallout.
  1:37am
DJKG:

are we sure kenny g never did a playlist without a show?
  1:38am
air:

CLAY?
  1:38am
(mta) Tony:

DJKG: You're so right, fmu listeners are truly the very best of folks; an amazing family of friends.
  1:41am
amEdeo:

Alright, I need to go to bed. I haven't slept very much since Saturday night. Here's to hoping the power comes back soon. Stay safe and warm everyone.
  1:41am
Julie:

KG! Glad you are okay!
  1:44am
erik:

Yes, this is great, THANK YOU.... Sitting in. The dark in abc city after coming 2 steps away from my 1st flr apt being flooded; holy shit was that scary.... REALLY nice to see fmu continuing in this form. And it IS a form of it, since we all are fmu if wesupport them... Anyway, it's great!
  1:48am
Caryn:

I kinda feel it is my duty as a WFMU listener to stay tuned around the clock to make sure everyone is alright at the station. (Not that that's of any real help, but...) Right now am reduced to checking streams every so often, between naps,
  1:51am
Matt from Springfield:

Rest up Caryn, it may be a while.
  1:54am
Marmalade kitty:

Take care everybody!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:54am
JBeek:

OK, I'm pledging for roctober or whatever it's called in honor of this comment thread.
  1:56am
Caryn:

@Matt: I think I have an hour or two left in me, and then I'll have to crash. 15 minute naps while cradling a laptop are not offering much actual rest, and it being almost 8 a.m. here, I'm fading fast.
  1:58am
DJKG:

you guys are inspiring. for really.
  1:59am
Matt from Springfield:

You do the same, Kitty!

@Caryn: If you fade fast, we would understand--catch some zzzzs!
@JBeek: Awesome! Thank you much!
  2:00am
Marmalade kitty:

It's great that Clay leaves his playlist/comments open before during and after *air* ..very handy!
  2:00am
DJKG:

as i understand it, we are prepared to storm the airwaves as soon as power is restored in jersey city, but no word on when that'll be.
  2:03am
Julie:

KG I think Clay is sitting there in the squeaky chair waiting to pounce. I like to think he's already do his show
  2:05am
Caryn:

I imagine Clay is sitting by the controls, waiting for the power to get back on, entertaining himself by singing.
  2:07am
Marmalade kitty:

don't go climbing that crane, anybody..!
  2:07am
G:

The station just made it to 60% of the fall goal while dark.
  2:09am
Caryn:

Where is this crane everyone's talking about? Is it on the NJ or NY side?
  2:09am
G:

Mayor of Hoboken, New Jersey, calls for National Guard help - @WSJ
  2:10am
G:

The crane fell maybe 4PM or so, at a highrise construction site on 57th St. in Manhattan
  2:11am
Marmalade kitty:

  2:13am
G:

Statement from MTA Chairman Joseph J.Lhota on Service Recovery: "The New York City subway system is 108 years old, but it has never faced a disaster as devastating as what we experienced last night...."
  2:14am
DJKG:

hi julie! no doubt clay is sitting there singing "riding the storm out" over and over! & the crane hasn't fallen yet - it's still dangling.
  2:15am
DJKG:

couldn't we disable the math problem? things are trying enough right now.
  2:16am
Caryn:

Thanks, G & MK!
  2:35am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Hello!
  2:36am
Matt from Springfield:

A Shot In The Dark...BadGuyZero! Hello!
  2:37am
Caryn:

Hello, BGZ!
  2:37am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Earlier on the news they said it would take 4-10 days to restore power. They also said that subway service likely will not resume until the weekend or early next week. As for the dangling crane they said the plan was to wrap steel cable around it and hoist it back up.
  2:38am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Hello Matt & Caryn!
  2:39am
Matt from Springfield:

At least it's tolerable here so far, but wow in NYC it's just as bad as it was hyped to be.
  2:42am
DJKG:

bgz - i've heard those time frames but stated as "potentially," not "likely." i don't think anyone will know much until tomorrow at the earliest.
  2:42am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

I had WNBC streaming and would check out the video anytime they were showing something new. The photos that people were tweeting did a far more accurate job of documenting the flooding and assorted destruction.
  2:46am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

@DJKG: Indeed. There were conflicting accounts of whether or not things were flooding [like the stock exchange] as well as the severity of flooding. Emergency generators at some of the hospitals failed to work which caused complications of a whole other sort.
  2:56am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

I'm going to sleep. I hope those of you in the northeast are safe. You are in my thoughts. I hope your lives are back to normal ASAP. Take care. I'll talk to you soon.
  2:57am
DJKG:

for sure things are bad. we know that much. goodnight, bgz.
  3:00am
Matt from Springfield:

I'm about to go to sleep myself, BGZ.
Good night everyone, hopefully it won't be as bad tomorrow.
  3:06am
Marmalade kitty:

Goodnight everyone, sleep well
  3:07am
Caryn:

Goodnight to all who are off to bed! I might try and get some sleep too. Be back in a couple of hours to see if anything's happened.
  3:09am
Jay/ London:

did a power station blow up ?
  3:13am
Caryn:

@Jay: check out the link at 12:46 on this comments board
  3:18am
Jay/ London:

omg Caryn that looks bad
  3:22am
Caryn:

@Jay: yeah, that big flash was especially freaky

Off to bed now. To Clay and to everyone else in the affected areas: hang in there!
  3:25am
tomB:

Winds have only been hurricane level for an hour in N.Manhattan (11 mi. upriver fr FMU). No rain accumulation here. Sometime after midnight, lights flickered several times, discontinuously spread over 5 minutes. We got off easy here.
  3:50am
Bas, NL:

Just switched in.. What a mess! Stay safe and be well my friends!
  3:52am
Sandy:

Thinking of WFMU and east coast friends...Take care everyone! Great tips from the NYC Red Cross on coping with the hurricane (kind of sweet & funny too): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b47wBSlCaDM
  3:52am
Vicki:

hello! Just woke up and finding out what's been happening - my god! Hope you're all OK, wel done staying at the station.
  3:54am
Jay/ London:

@ vicki I do not think they can leave the station
  4:05am
Jay/ London:

  4:08am

it is crazy in pockets here on the East Coast.
  4:08am
Vicki:

er, I think we should pledge for Clay - 68%?!!!!!
  4:17am
Vicki:

if there was ever a time to pledge for WFMU it is now.
  4:27am
NJ:

Everything's down right here
  4:30am
frenchee:

I'm picturing Clay sleeping on the board, arms outstretched. waiting for the power to flicker on.
  4:41am
Kenzo (lastever):

Good thing we moved our servers out of NYC a couple of months ago...
  4:45am
Julie:

I love how much Clay is raising now by not being on the air!
  4:57am
Vicki:

yes, I was just thinking that, Kenzo
  4:58am

  5:38am
(--):

Dusty you up!?

I can't hear a thing!

No live streams working...
  5:38am
(--):

in the UK BTW
  5:46am
Vicki - WFMU:

WFMU is currently off the air, being in a power cut in Jersey City. Check the WFMU frontpage for updates. The WFMU servers are far from NY/NJ so this playlist is active. Clay likely has no power himself, and is at the station waiting for it to come back.
  5:51am
Vicki - WFMU:

This is the location of WFMU - the floods reached half a block from the station - http://goo.gl/maps/YMz5a

I wonder how Clay's doing? Has he run out of songs to sing? Naah, what am I saying? He has an endless supply. Keep going strong, WFMU!
  8:51am
Caryn:

That ? was me, btw.
  9:09am
Julie:

Heard from Clay at 8am, he's still keeping his phone off to conserve battery, everything down there the same.
  9:58am
Frances from VA:

Thx so much for the update Julie! I hope everyone is cozy in footie pjs. So glad y'all are safe!

G:

Just read in my news feed that 95% of Newark is without power too. It's going to take a week or two to get everyone back on. Fortunately for FMU, they are in the central business area of JC, because triage priority goes to denser areas where more customers can be brought back online (scattered suburban houses where an entire line needs to be redone for one customer get lower priority). If FMU's problem is the local transformer, how long to fix depends on whether it's a repair thing (can be fast) or a replace thing (can take time).
