  Mon. 10/29/12 3:08pm bartleby:

Scott, you know the broadcast signal just died a minute ago
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:08pm Maestroso:

Well, that explains why my cable feed switched to wrti.
Mon. 10/29/12 3:09pm Matt from Springfield:

Moog River, nice!

@Scott W: More like the Hudson Sea! I'd better check DC area webcams, see if flooding has started yet.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:10pm BSI:

Scott, I figured you had a zip-line connection from home to FMU, for just such an emergency... Arrive magically like some demented superhero with a bag of records and a head fulla crazy...
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:10pm G:

Nice stormy vibe on this Stomu Y

  Mon. 10/29/12 3:14pm amEdeo:

@Jay: Nah, I got a ride back into NY with Nachum after his show. So I did not have to live off of a single apple, some tea, and one bottle of beer after all.

Just like Peter G., the lead singer had trouble stretching to the high notes in that "Pontiac" line
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:21pm G:

  Mon. 10/29/12 3:30pm amEdeo:

@Jay: Hahahaha. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. Whatever happened, I hope they found what they were *really* looking for.
Mon. 10/29/12 3:30pm Matt from Springfield:

LOVE Roy Orbison!

BT played this cardboard postcard disc, I couldn't listen to the entire track myself because of skipping/rotation problems, but if you want to hear the whole uninterrupted track, check Brian Turner's archive.

As a terrible weather nerd, I'm wondering what are these emergency broadcast system "permissions cards" you and Ken are talking about? Do they just say "I work on the radio, let me to my transmitter"?
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:43pm amEdeo:

YES. YES. I listened to this late last night, and really freaked myself out. Great song.

@Matt: The weather is positively peaceful compared to your impending storm of doom!

Clear frosty nights, cold misty days. I love this time of year - but then, we don't get hurricanes :)

That Clay track was great.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:50pm paul:

YES
Mon. 10/29/12 3:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, GREAT backing track @ this speed!
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:50pm G:

  Mon. 10/29/12 3:51pm Dave E::

Hall & Oates never sounded better!
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:52pm Carmichael:

Hiya Scott. Hi 'Caners.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:52pm Caryn:

This is clearly the speed at which H&O should be listened to always.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:52pm Dave E::

Although, 78 might be better as it would be over sooner!
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:52pm Jay/ London:

this song song is better at this speed .. maneater
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:52pm Cecile:

I like this at regular speed.
Mon. 10/29/12 3:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Daryl Hall has a great, forceful soul voice. Normally when I play around with tracks using Audacity, I have sped up H&O tracks; even after a high pitch shift, Daryl's voice usually remains quite strong and intact.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:52pm Michael Slaboch:

Sounds like Jon Glaser is singing in his Delocated voice modulator.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:53pm Sandy:

Watch out boy, i chewin up your added fer shurr!!!!!
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:53pm Cecile:

Do you have your Starbuck loop floating around?

  Mon. 10/29/12 3:54pm StormTraktor:

More Updates!
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:54pm Dave E::

Can anyone explain why the speed of records is 16, 45, 33 and 78? Seems that they should be even sppeds like 20, 40, 60 etc.
Mon. 10/29/12 3:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: Everything is ultimately "ripped off" of something--with 80s soul you hear a lot of Motown lifts. "Maneater" borrowed from the Supremes "My World Is Empty Without You" intro rhythm. But at least they used that unique rhythm very well.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:55pm GrannyP:

Kind of like the slow 'Maneater'.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:56pm Soul Patch:

is this NKOTB?
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:56pm Dominick:

wowie
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:57pm Cecile:

H&O came by their love of soul honestly. They used to be studio musicians for Philadelphia International. I like them a lot. Some of their stuff is pretty facile and cold-blooded, but their good stuff is excellent pop.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:57pm Cecile:

this is awesome. I love this.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:57pm Dave E::

Maneater like that guy in Florida. They should keep the hurricanes in Florida too.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:58pm G:

There are very specific tech and business reasons (good or bad, your call) -- there's a ton of detail scattered throughout this article, especially in sections with the headings "Speed(s)" --

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramophone_record
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:58pm Carmichael:

I am not now, nor have I ever been, everything.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:59pm Parq:

Hi Scott. Don't have any quips. Just want to say my hat's off to you for making it in to do this today. All the best.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:59pm Caryn:

I like Hall's voice (and Oates' mustache, of course), but a lot of the songs are not my cup of tea. I think slowing "Maneater" up makes the backing track way better than normal. Of course, H&O just makes me think of the running "H&O work with inner city kids" sketches on "Big Train", so it's hard to take them seriously anymore.
  Mon. 10/29/12 3:59pm Dave E::

TY G:!
Mon. 10/29/12 4:00pm Matt from Springfield:

@Dave E: In response to your question, here is the best explanation I've found. Took a moment to search old playlists to find the link for it again, but here it is:
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/228/why-are-record-speeds-33-45-and-78-rpm

(Incidentally, thank you G, for providing that link in the first place!)

That picture of the Hudson (is it?), looks like the Mersey in Liverpool uk on any given day
  Mon. 10/29/12 4:08pm G:

@Matt: Yeah, I remembered that I knew about that other link you just now reposted, but was not recalling it off the top of my head at the moment Dave E posted. So as a fallback I knew the wiki article would be okay for getting to know something about it. Thanks for refinding that link, Matt :-)

Now it's outside for me, for a bit, to check the Brooklyn weather. (I'm done with online paid work for the day, and the electricity hasn't died here yet :-) )
Mon. 10/29/12 4:09pm Sleestaxvalley from Mankato:

I dont know crap but isnt the Hudson a total sty and all that is gonna be washing down your streets and it is total poison?
  Mon. 10/29/12 4:09pm Jay/ London:

Using Nat Roe's Supercut-O-Matic, I took a "Beach" playlist I made in iTunes and chopped up a 5 minute comp version. "Sandy" makes an appearance in that as well.

Dammit Clay, there are NO Shakey's on the East Coast!

Mon. 10/29/12 5:13pm Matt from Springfield:

"Three Blind Mice" has 3 notes, I think "Hot Cross Buns" is similar, but only with 2 notes.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:14pm Cecile:

Hot cross buns! Hot cross buns!
1 a penny, 2 a penny, hot cross buns!
If you have no daughters, then give them to your sons. 1 a penny, 2 a penny, hot cross buns.

Mon. 10/29/12 5:16pm Matt from Springfield:

@MK: Cool, you still have those regularly around Easter time over there?
Mon. 10/29/12 5:17pm Matt from Springfield:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:17pm Cecile:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:19pm greenberg:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:27pm conrad:

Matt: Shakey's is crap, the McD's of pizza.
Mon. 10/29/12 5:27pm Matt from Springfield:

The Seekers' "Come The Day" seems an obvious influence on A Mighty Wind songs. It's a good'un, such idealistic folk on the dreams of future peace and brotherhood.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:27pm Rawnald:

DJ Battle time!!
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:27pm Cecile:

He made "for your consideration"
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:28pm Cecile:

my favorite one is Best in Show.
Mon. 10/29/12 5:28pm Matt from Springfield:

I liked "For Your Consideration", though it's definitely not a classic like Guffman/Best In Show/Mighty Wind.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:28pm cosmic matrix:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:29pm Jeff:

Oh, my - y'know, the Guest crew couldn't have done such a devastatingly good job of satirizing the folk scene if they hadn't really known and loved it.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:29pm Caryn:

Christopher Guest: makes great movies, writes great music, is a nobleman, and managed to snag Jamie Lee Curtis. Man has it all.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:29pm Jeff:

Where's the Ian & Sylvia?
Mon. 10/29/12 5:30pm Phillip in San Antonio:

No Cloudbusting by Kate Bush?
Mon. 10/29/12 5:31pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jeff: It helps that Guest & Co. are part of the really early Boomers, so they were old enough to experience the folk scene in the early 60s as it was happening.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:31pm Hollis (U.K):

yeah cloudbusting would be perfect
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:31pm cosmic matrix:

@ hollis, OK, good point, but this guy dressed up as a wizard a lot and made a crop circle board game! he was also part of a stonehendge rock-moving project from wales or something

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:33pm Hollis (U.K):

@cosmic AGAIN! seriously In Bristol/Glastonbury and where I live .. there are loads of people doing that kinda thing, kinda gets confusing.. yep.. hippy heaven here.. (tho I am a hard bastard :-)

Mon. 10/29/12 5:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:41pm Carmichael:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:41pm cosmic matrix:

zebra mussel soda was the first 45 i ever bought
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:41pm Caryn:

I suspect the message of The Walker Brothers' "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" might seem too bleak now. But it would still be a good track to play.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:41pm amEdeo:

@Matt from Springfield: Wow, thanks! That's a super compliment.
Mon. 10/29/12 5:41pm Matt from Springfield:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:45pm SteveL:

Safety Dance was 'our' song, albeit, somewhat tongue in cheek. Our favorite grocery store used to play it on the cash registers (boop boop, beep beep, boop boop boop, beep beep!)
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:45pm Caryn:

After they're done with hurricane-appropriate songs, they'll move on to hurricane-appropriate bands, like Flood or The Hurriganes.
Mon. 10/29/12 5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Reverb-oake!
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:45pm Cecile:

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:47pm Cecile:

ACE!
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:47pm Skirkie:

Long story short on Christie's remarks: Had a good conversation with the president today. They're BFF now.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:47pm Robb:

CLAY! YES!
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:48pm Caryn:

@BGZ: well yeah, because, like a lot of 80s' music videos, it makes no sense whatsoever. Just a hodge-podge of "let's put those guys in weird costumes dancing bizarrely in there too".
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:49pm Cecile:

tim g....teem!
Mon. 10/29/12 5:49pm BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:50pm Ike:

Power is wobbling here again, lights are dimming, so I'm really glad you're back on the air at 91.1!
Mon. 10/29/12 5:51pm Matt from Springfield:

THAT'S why the Pidge is so good for Hurricane Parties!
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:51pm Skirkie:

91,1 is back. Mind the curses.
Mon. 10/29/12 5:52pm BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

  Mon. 10/29/12 5:52pm Cecile:

Mon. 10/29/12 5:55pm Jaybee in Bmore:

I second Hollis
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:55pm Yvonne:

Oh it sounds so pretty. Like an wind-up radio when you're camping in the woods.
Mon. 10/29/12 5:56pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Throbbing Gristle also makes great Halloween music, Hallocane!
Mon. 10/29/12 5:56pm Jaybee in Bmore:

@Hollis I agree!
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:57pm Caryn:

Maybe it IS a wind-up radio. Earlier, the turntables were losing power, so we may be stuck with music that can be played via battery power or hand-crank.
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:58pm diego:

thanks
  Mon. 10/29/12 5:58pm Cecile:
