Kendall!:
I saw an old woman who I was friends with, dead in the hospital only 10 minutes after she died, and it's totally different from a funeral body. The body sets in to rigamortis, and the mouth and eyes look like empty sockets almost. It's like the person has become a shell of what they used to be, like a cicada leaves their shell. They don't even look like the person they used to be.

in Nepal and Tibet they leave the corpses in a field for vultures to eat. It's called a Sky Burial and it looks pretty cool.

I recently visited the Sedlec Ossuary where a half-blind monk built a ton of sculptures with the bones of 50,000 people dead from the Plague and the Hussar wars http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8vngmG6Jx1rvqeg7o2_1280.jpg

Any plan we might have for balancing the budget would be so unpopular, everyone would hate us. Not the way to re-election.

|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:28pm
Dan B From Upstate:
I hadn't really experienced my first family death until I was 21.
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:28pm
danny venture:
this is true, in my opinion, that not experiencing death in our time as a regular and visceral fact of life has made us more neurotic about our own death or death of loved ones
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:32pm
Cliff:
My paternal grandfather died a few months before I was born. My paternal grandmother died when I was 7. My father died just after I turned 20. My maternal grandparents died within a month of each other when I was 30. And then a month after that my stepfather died.
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:34pm
Dan B From Upstate:
Wow, Cliff. I feel for you, but you probably don't have the same fear of death that I do.
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:37pm
die dan b die!:
die , i say | |
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:39pm
danny venture:
but i mean being on top of the food chain we have no real predator to fear and a real lack of 'shit, my cousins was killed by a bear, well, that's life, and there he is, dead and mauled' i dont mean everyone should suffer these situations, but, uhh, you know, as an extreme example, you'd get a lot of thinking out of the way in a short period of time. you wouldn't be leaping onto the chairs at the oscars with love of life but we've lost a concrete threat of imminent death and the void is a major cause of.. confusion?
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:42pm
Cliff:
Dan B, I still have an instinctual fear of it, for sure, but intellectually I'm more at peace with it, I guess. Which reminds me, the year before my grandparents and stepdad died, I was hit and run over by a car. Fortunately no major injuries. I can still remember the absolute panic I felt as the car's wheel rolled over my foot...
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:45pm
Dan B From Upstate:
Holy crap, Cliff! I couldn't even imagine! The closest I ever came was I nearly fell in a canal near where I grew up when I was maybe four. My mother grabbed my shirt and pulled me back, then called me an idiot. Fair enough, I suppose.
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:52pm
Cliff:
When I was a toddler, I stumbled down the basement steps and almost landed head-first on the concrete basement floor, but luckily my dad was down there working and he caught me. I don't have any direct memories of it, but all my life I've had nightmares of slowly floating down the basement steps head-first. I think it's a memory of what happened to me when I was a toddler. (Sorry if I'm bringing everybody down....I'm not really too depressed about these things anymore, I'm just a bit unlucky I guess :)
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:53pm
Cliff:
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
|
Thu. 10/25/12 7:54pm
Dan B From Upstate:
Nah, Cliff. Don't worry about it. If anything, it's interesting to learn about people! Good point. I haven't almost fallen in any canals since.

Interesting episode, too bad about Dave's technical problems. Also, why is the open casket such a thing in eastern-orthodox churches?
