Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Favoriting October 25, 2012: Police Brutality March - 17 Sizzlers!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
The First 22 mins. of this episode were recorded October 22, 2012 in Union Square Park, Manhattan. The ocassion was the 17th National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation. It was a heavy scene, but an important one. I did have some sonic difficulties in recording the guest speakers as their voices came through a PA system. Very muddy result. Apologies there.

I also had a stockpile of 17 flea market finds that were burning a hole in my imagination and I really needed to play them. So ... following the footage from the Protest and March, you'll hear The 17 Sizzlers! I do like this group of records. A strange episode, but an episode nonetheless.

Matt from Springfield:

Mr. Pea!!
Great start! And are those your beats on top of her rap?
Avatar 6:07pm
Clay:

Hey guys. Yeah, Matt. All mine. ha!
  6:08pm
david:

watched the livestream of the October 22nd Coalition and co's event. The woman who said Kelly and Bloomberg was full of sh*t— the entirety of what she said was one of the most powerful and effective indictments I've heard. Clay is thoughtfully, sensitively editing and curating this material.
Avatar 6:10pm
Clay:

Thanks Davide. Really wrestled with audio quality trying to record the P.A. at Union Square Park. Pretty lo-fi. I wish I'd had more time to assemble this show. Could have made a nice hour.
  6:10pm
david:

on another note, my playlist just skipped to Coltrane's "Ascension" and I thought for a moment it was part of the program.

Clay:

David, I mean ... though I kind of like Davide.
  6:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@david: Is there a video posted anywhere of the woman's whole statement?
Glad that one of us watched the whole event, and can confirm Clay's thoughtful summary of it.
Avatar 6:12pm
Clay:

I had to add digital megaphone effect to that woman's speech to add treble. So muddy. On the other hand, these whistles drive me nuts. Now that I've mentioned them, you won't be able to not notice them.
  6:14pm
kata:

howdy Clay and listeners -- great coverage Clay !

@MFS This is it raw, I think http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/26366369 - if not check the other archives on this page
  6:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Did they pass out whistles, or did the protestors bring their own? Drums are good for protests, you can march and chant to them. Whistles can be problematic because they can make communication difficult.
Avatar 6:16pm
Clay:

TY Kata. Appreciate that. Not even an S-Fest in here today. A morgue! Except for my closest Dustyites.
  6:17pm
kata:

ha ha, you have a good memory, I forgot about the sausage comment.. ;)
  6:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

All right, thanks david!
Hi kata! Individual hi to Night Al, and everyone else!
  6:17pm
Carmichael:

Was listening while waiting for the comments to come up. Most of what I heard (while working) was unintelligible, because of the PA system and the woman's voice histrionics. Maybe seeing it would shed some light on her speech.
  6:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Rich the Anarchist"!! He was the anti-police interviewee from the FIRST OWS show! Makes sense he would show up to this.
Avatar 6:19pm

Rich is everywhere, Matt. Carmichael, sorry for bad audio. New sonic low today.

Matt from Springfield:

Banner ad on the UStream page, for "Kars 4 Kids"--the notorious "grating" AM commercials in the NYC area, Irwin's done a remix of that!
  6:21pm
Carmichael:

That's OK Clay. You're doing the best with what you were handed. I've been saying that for this entire election cycle.
  6:22pm
Carmichael:

Matt, I hear those commercials out here in NorCal. Nationwide grating ...

Ya Clay! Now can you play Nutz' "As Far As the Eye Can See"? HA HA
  6:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Oh man!..
Yep, always doing the best with what we're handed. It's true "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit", but it's not useless--you can make fertilizer out of it!

I love NY but accept the fact that NY hates my guts.

this is a great song - but I always think it's The Who's "Can't Explain" when I hear the first few bars..

I thought that same thing, Kata.

Matt from Springfield:

*NAZZ* Todd!

Love America:

Do Romney n Ryan prove their love is greater as they wear larger and larger flag lapel pins? Trivia: the flag lapel pin came into fashion as supporting the prez during Watergate. Never mind the flag code provision prohibiting that (no clothes or jewelry).
