Happy Birthday, Yusef Lateef! The Universe sings in glory... Unfortunately I have to leave in a few minutes and can't catch this live, so I'll just have to "make like Van" and return to the Archive afterwards! ;)

I can, however, help you move your turntables and DJ equip into the party a while. Do you have a sound system hooked up? Or are *you* a Sound system? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_system_(Jamaican)

The Blue Yusef Lateef was one of the first records I ever bought, age maybe 14. I had no idea who Yusef Lateef was, but one listen was enough to blow me away.

I bought an album that had a paper sleeve with pictures of other LPs in their catalog. One of them was The Diverse Yusef Lateef. That was the 1st time I had heard of him, and I quickly resolved to actually hear him.

Easily the greatest music thrill of my entire life was having Yusef's long-time producer, the legendary Joel Dorn, say in the liner notes to a reissue box set: "...I met a guy named Doug Schulkind who, near as I can tell, is the world's leading authority on the recordings of Yusef Lateef. We talked for the better part of an hour about Yusef's records, and I must tell you it was one of the most satisfying conversations I've ever had concerning records that I produced. To know that someone was so moved by the records that meant so much to Yusef and me was very heartening indeed." |

Whew! That was an amazing party, glad I could enjoy that with you all thanks to the time machine! Totally agree LJFW: Yusef will never fade, past present and future, he is an amazing, wonderful force. I'm glad to hear such a range of "Autophysiopsychic" delights today--"jazz" is underwhelming, Yusef's style encompasses so many forms of music that it is simply vibrant, vivacious and on the good side of "out there"! I also think that's a lovely choice of photo for the playlist.

And thank you, Bro. Doug, for your devoted living tributes to Bro. Yusef. Joel Dorn's got it right, you may be the most appreciative Yusef Lateef fan on Earth! I always enjoy reading your story about seeing him in concert and meeting him--how beautiful to meet and experience one of your inspirations like that! Thanks for spreading his wonderful music to new fans like myself.

And thank you Doug! I see the outline of the icing has the "f" in "Lateef", and a bit of the second e but NOT the first! That's the best possible slice! I'd better round this off with a healthier lunch and a healthy Scenario. Started listening now, but I'll see ya on those comments shortly!
