Hey Clay. Timb listening in Fort Lauderdale. Greetings from the western tip of the bermuda triangle! Had a lot of fun with last week's show. I scored you and Fabio at a tie.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:15pm
Clay:
Hay, Timbo. Glad you liked the Duel. I had a blast. Thanks for recognizing the tie!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:16pm
Night Al:
I went to the movies last Wednesday and saw John Demme's documentary about Heil Young. I went to the 2PM showing and was the only one in the theater. The jist... Neil Young returns to his birth Canadian province of Ontario to revisit his old haunts and to perform in Toronto's vintage Massey Hall. A mix of car footage and solo concert footage.

WESTPAC = Western Pacific, i.e. the eastern hemisphere Pacific. He may not have stopped in Japan, but was probably deployed afloat in that general region.

Fabio is a worthy adversary for sure.

Thanks Matt, I was wondering about that mention
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:18pm
Ike:
Ugh, another libertarian imagining welfare queens sitting around collecting checks. Jeez, it's not 1992 anymore. Jealous of indigent people. Very weird.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:19pm
Matt from Springfield:
@OD: A "pseudo-blend", or "military acronym". The US military lives and breathes them! :)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:19pm
Clay:
That film sounds cool, Al. Harvest is one of my all-time faves ...... Seang! Hello. Matt, you don't miss a thing.

Hello Ike. Thanks for listening. Agree with you.

Hahaha! Loverboy! Nice one Clay.

Thu. 9/6/12 6:22pm
Clay:
I know, David. That kind of sickened me.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:22pm
Matt from Springfield:
Do you know the difference? Abbreviation: Letters grouped together (F-B-I, N-Y-C, etc) Acronym: Letters spoken together as a word (NATO, HIPAA, etc) Pseudo-blend: Beginnings of words spoken together as a word (PSYOP, Tribeca, etc)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:24pm
Matt from Springfield:
"He's got my vote!" "I should be in it!" Ironic, or no...
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:24pm
Clay:
Hey John. There's some good stuff on that 84 Olympics LP (Cassette) ----- Wife and I went through a recent Loverboy phase, Timb. Good stuff!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:24pm
Night Al:
anyone watching DNC on C-Span? Charlie Crist is set to speak tonight. they have him listed as (R-FL), but he renounced the GOP over a year ago. I think he's listed as (I - FL) nowadays, even though he's currently not in office. Gotta turn up Florida's Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz for a minute...be right back.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:25pm
northguineahills:
Didn't he say he was a Michigan State fan? B/c, Clay is playing the University of Michagan alma mater.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:25pm
other david:
Yep Matt - it seems to be a real hallmark of the use of English in the States, shorten everything down to the bare minimum. It works I guess and it's catching on, on this side of the pond too.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:26pm
Matt from Springfield:
Mary Wing played Quincy Jones (I think) from the XXIII Olympiad soundtrack LP, when the Olympics were going on this year.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:26pm
Clay:
Crist seems pretty tame by present day Florida political standards, AL. ------ North Guinea ... yeah ... was hoping you wouldn't notice , but FMU listeners never miss a thing. Good ear.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:27pm
kat330:
Hiya, Clay! Hi, all good folks! We're listening but keyboard inactive. Clay, that piece you played, I think you said it was '72 or so? Had an accordion -- that reminded me quite a bit of Jacques Brel.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:28pm
Clay:
Hi Kat ... I liked that song. Especially the long held-out vocal note at the end. Good 2cu!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:28pm
other david:
hey kat & philo - you're getting a ticking off for keyboard inactivity :)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:29pm
kat330:
Uh-oh -- what does that entail, OD? Hi, to you, too! :)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:29pm
Matt from Springfield:
@OD: George Orwell believed that pseudo-blends would be used as a tool in restricting language and then thought "1984" style. He used the early example of "Comintern" as an example of removing the original associations and diversity of the words. "Minitrue" and all the "Mini-" ministries were an example used in his novel.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:29pm
northguineahills:
As a former Floridian (lived there for 20 years, w/ family still there), I agree that Crist is rather tame by Floridian GOP standards.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:29pm
Clay:
Philo. Hello, old bean.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:30pm
Timb:
Crist did some good things to stand up to the Republicans when it came to bad bills on education. He earned a lot of respect from progressives and people in the middle, but he ended up in a political nowhere land after he switched to independent. We really need to get rid of the 2 party system altogether. Ban both parties, start a new system.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:30pm
Matt from Springfield:
Hi Hoosier friends kat and Philo! OD is right, you need a speech-to-text mic to fill in the gap! :)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:32pm
Clay:
My editing is sloppy this week. Hurried. Didn't get started until Wednesday (yesterday).
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:32pm
Philo Gristle:
Hi OD, Clay P., MfS & rest y'all abbrvs!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:32pm
Matt from Springfield:
Stan Freberg, now he's good!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:32pm
kat330:
NYers, I think you might have a gem in Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. [Her biopic would have to have Amy Ryan in the lead.]
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:33pm
other david:
@Matt: Yes I read 1984 and it's an interesting comparison.. whether it's deliberate, or just a natural progression for language.. I don't know.. guess it depends on whether I'm wearing my cynic hat or not :) @kat: I'm afraid I can't divulge the details in advance!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Philo: Good noticing! (Emm Eff Ess) ;)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:34pm
kat330:
Since Lee Hamilton snd Bayh retired, can't hardly point to a Hoosier politician to be proud of. There's Mr. Potatoe Head of course.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:35pm
Matt from Springfield:
Mark "Paul Revere" Lindsay, IIRC?
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:35pm
Night Al:
ditto Timb......Jill Stein and the Green Party will probably get my vote. I still think that 911 was an inside job. I've watched hours of evidence and smell a BIG rat. The 911 commission was as big a political sweep-the-dirt-under-the-rug job as the Warren Commission. Some Facebook friends constantly send me conspiracy theory links and a lot of it makes sense to me. I mean some really valid points are brought up on many covert operations in my opinion.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:36pm
Clay:
Yes Matt ... that Mark Lindsay.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:38pm
Night Al:
Desmond TUtu has called for Bush/Cheney and Tony Blair to be brought up before the Hague on war crimes.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:39pm
Matt from Springfield:
Paul Ryan has said he'll do this TO "a country in despair and decline"--note that he never said he would STOP the "despair and decline"!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:40pm
Philo Gristle:
I tend to enjoy it as a literary device (quite a few scientifiction novels of yesteryear have done experiments in dropping of words, punctuation, letters etc), and as an occasional editor of crime fiction I like the concept of compressing verbosity into its essence... but simplification b4 u lrn z lingo proper will atrophy ones brain.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:41pm
other david:
4 rlz philo! | |
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:42pm
kat330:
@Philo: "compressing verbosity into its essence" -- Guess you married me because you love a challenge. :)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:42pm
Matt from Springfield:
"Ze Lingo Proper" would make a good song/book title! :)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:43pm
kata:
I love all these interviewees who speak for "everybody" and "all the rest" ! puhleez !
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:44pm
kat330:
Floridians, appears you have storms Leslie and Michael ready to go tandem on yo ass.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:45pm
Night Al:
Obama signed the NDAA, and let BP allow an oil volcano to erupt in the gulf for months. He said to forget about any retribution against Bush/Cheney that it was NOT going to happen. He said forget about repealing NAFTA/WTO..... Jill Stein and the Green Party share my views. I read their entire platform at www.gp.org
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:45pm
Matt from Springfield:
"On a tropical storm built, for two..."
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:45pm
Matt from Springfield:
And hi kata! | |
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:46pm
Philo Gristle:
@kat I try! Snip! :) | |
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:46pm
kat330:
Any baguette baking this afternoon, Kata? I made the yummiest croutons from what I thought was a hopelessly hard / stale baguette the other night.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:46pm
Night Al:
Those storms are heading for Bermuda...no where near Florida.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:47pm
kat330:
You can't keep an inveterate windbag down, Philo dear.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:48pm
md:
did he say 'nick rombie'? - thats awesome.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:48pm
Clay:
Something like that, md. Loved that. He was a nice guy.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:48pm
Matt from Springfield:
We were meant to know a little more about Prism... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prism_(band)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:49pm
Emily Litella:
@Night Al: Oops, sure looked like Florida from the no-volume TV map we just saw. Never mind.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:49pm
Clay:
Thanks Matt. My fated assistant.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:50pm
kata:
howdy MFS ! no baguettes today, Kat, I'm back at the office with a new contract, two new systems in place and absolute chaos ensuing. But I've been making them on weekends. Croutons, good idea !
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:51pm
Matt from Springfield:
"At least Bush had the brprbprbprpbrppbpr"... that's a soundbyte for GWB defenders!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:51pm
Night Al:
I love bush too! | |
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:51pm
sfrances:
@Night Al: I agree with you in many more ways than disagree & have voted 3rd party a few times--but sadly, I'm in the swing state of Virginia now & will have to vote Dem just to try & cock block Romney from getting Virginia's vote. I'm late to the party but will enjoy the archives! Always remember!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:51pm
Philo Gristle:
Hard to compress real content! Delete all adjectives. Excellent interviews to-day, as always, Clay.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:51pm
RCinMT:
Let me put it this way, that guy is a moron.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:52pm
md:
wasnt poking fun, clay. that was just genuinely amusing. thats what im calling him from now on!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:52pm
northguineahills:
Speaking of Bush, I'm no longer a beardo. The missus will like this (might have to do some "traditional" interviews soon).
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:53pm
other david:
oh man | |
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:53pm
Clay:
Hi Frances. Really glad you made it! Thanks Philo, appreciate that my broadcast friend. Hello RC. He was ... difficult.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:53pm
sfrances:
Hooray Hudson Bros! I watched their tv show...!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:53pm
Matt from Springfield:
Claytonite Frances of Springfield, Richmond and Ackley-by-marriage! You are always remembered!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:54pm
Night Al:
sfrances..... I've reached the point where I have to vote my heart and even risk another 2000 Florida 100 vote swing state debacle...Jill Stein and the Green Party share my views so much more than Dems.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:54pm
Matt from Springfield:
@RCinMT: "Royal Crown Cola in Montana"? ;)
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:54pm
Clay:
Agree, md. It was funny.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:54pm
Night Al:
funny...Obama's NOT liberal ENOUGH for my views!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:55pm
kat330:
@NGH: Unfortunately your tonsorial decision could well help you. Philo arrived on our continent with a long ponytail -- lopping it off finally allowed him employment in this area. Shame though.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:55pm
other david:
Good lord, Obama too liberal?
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:55pm
Clay:
Guess I better back on out for Night People. Thank you SO MUCH for listening and interacting y'all. Appreciate your insights and words. Keep tuning in when you can. 9/11 and Occupy Anniversary upcoming. Stay in touch. dusty@wfmu.org
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:56pm
RCinMT:
@Matt: Yes, I have a hat.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:56pm
kat330:
I've also most always voted 3rd party, including Nader, but didn't in '08 and won't this year either.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:57pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Night Al: "You bastard! Why are you not fitting into our sacred TWO PARTY SYSTEM! Uggh, get - in - there! Cram in!"
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:57pm
kat330:
TY, Clay! Have wonderful hours until you sleep and sweet dreams when you do!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:57pm
other david:
Thanks for another great show Clay!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:57pm
Night Al:
NAFTA and WTO have suckedaway almost the exact amount of jobs as we have unemployed in this country. If you want to solve the unemployment crisis, repeal NAFTA/WTO. Ross Perot tried to warn us against NAFTA/WTO years ago. He was dead on right!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:58pm
sfrances:
I hear ya, Al, I really do: and I've voted my heart in a swing state before & answered the 2000 wrath of my friends (I'm ok with it)--but I'm in GOP hell/culture shock back here in VA and so my heart will vote Dem. I'm with you: Obama is nowhere near liberal enough for me either--and I'm not saying I won't vote 3rd party in another swing state election: just not this one, for me.
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:58pm
Philo Gristle:
It's such a skewed perspective, coming from Europe..... I always considered myself a moderate leftist green, thinking Clinton was a slight rightwinger, and Obama a centrist. Guess Im a pinko after all!
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:58pm
Timb:
Great show Clay! | |
|
Thu. 9/6/12 6:59pm
DPCD:
Here we go- I am getting all kinds of email about a pending unilateral strike on Iran from Israel. It will solve their problem with Obama at this point in his career, because he won't take the risk of stopping them. Strikes against Lebanon and any other neighbors would be justified if they complain, and the poor Palestinians could expect to be flattened once again. Foreign policy is one thing we really suck at.
|
