  Thu. 8/30/12 12:19pm Cecile:

Thu. 8/30/12 12:19pm tim from champaign:

Poor DCP!!
Thu. 8/30/12 12:23pm tim from champaign:

Pat - As far as I know Bell's hasn't done that yet. Closest they've come is a Scotch Ale. Have you had Founder's Kentucky Bourbon Ale? It's a mind melter.
Thu. 8/30/12 12:24pm Vito Infidado Burrito:

  Thu. 8/30/12 12:27pm Cheri Pi:

*totally Cecile!
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:28pm Cheri Pi:

I actually surprised myself there..
Thu. 8/30/12 12:28pm tim from champaign:

Pat - Yes they do sell it outside of the brewery. Unfortunately it's a small batch and goes like hotcakes. Keep your eyes peeled for it in the early spring. Also look for New Holland's Dragon's Milk. That's available year round.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:29pm 100% real dc pat:

tim: do you mean Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout)? That looks like just the shit I need but looks like it's not exported.....

  Thu. 8/30/12 12:36pm Cecile:

ngh, it's about f'ing time.
I've been in there for various reasons. I think their food is better than many chains, but the environment is SO uninviting. Horrible. You'd rather be in a hospital waiting room.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:37pm Cecile:

and meet her for lunch - moral support!
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:38pm John Lisa:

Diane turns it out again. There is no substitute!
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:41pm Cheri Pi:

How did we even find music when we were teenagers??? I'll never know.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:44pm Cecile:

no prob. ngh.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:45pm Cecile:

I think we listened raptly to old stoners with record collections. And there was that whole reading thing.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:46pm stingy d:

dc pat! you watching the vuelta? or... what is it colorado?
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:46pm 100% real dc pat:

we went into record stores, looked at the covers, and bought the coolest looking one.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:46pm Torque:

Thank God somebody ROCKS around here.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:47pm andymorphic:

i am not getting any work done....i keep having to kvm over to see what the track is.....
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:47pm Cheri Pi:

And we had that rag, Maximum Rock-n-Roll...
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:47pm 100% real dc pat:

Yeah I missed a good part of Faye's show because of LaVuelta. Spanish guy is making Froome look like a FOOL.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:48pm Torque:

We read Creem, Crawdaddy, Hit Parader, Rolling Stone. We listened to stations that started with the letter Q. We watched Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. KAAY in Little Rock (Beeker St.) ...
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:48pm Cheri Pi:

I was surrounded by old stoners! and I never got stoned...then. and we had that book by Trouser press.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:49pm 100% real dc pat:

Later on, I had good friends that bought every freaking thing that came out. So I usually just went to their library.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:50pm 100% real dc pat:

Trouser Press itself was one of the only truly reliable mags. New Wave theater helped later on. and a show called Night Flight from Philly
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:50pm stingy d:

oh man! froome looked like he could have dogged wiggins at the tour. i saw the first 5 or 6 stages of the vuelta but lost track in the past few days.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:50pm Cheri Pi:

Oh yeah, and I lived in Seattle from 1980-85 so my formative years weren't all fucked up with commercial radio like if I had been in Cincinnati during that precious time.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:51pm Torque:

Two older brothers who went off to Brown Institute of Radio Technology in Minneapolis and North Texas State. They brought home stuff I'd never heard of back then. The Bubble Puppy, Flamin' Groovies, The Move.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:51pm 100% real dc pat:

stinj: You're right about the Tour. But he had to let the captain win. There are big things for him coming up, he's just tired right now I think.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:51pm Cecile:

we read the record reviews in Stereo Review, and old Rolling stones from the public library, and we watched for anything Lester Bangs wrote. We picked up whatever free publication was at the record store when we went travelling.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:53pm 100% real dc pat:

these kids today don't even know how to work for their music, dammit.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:53pm Torque:

@ Cheri - But in Cincy, they had Sudsy Malone's Laundromat/Rock Bar. The Lemon Pipers, Doris Day, Afghan Wigs, Bogart's,
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:53pm Cheri Pi:

We had friends that "borrowed" records from the college radio station....
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:53pm Torque:

Seattle had Paul Revere and the Raiders and that grunge thing. Oh, and Queensryche.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:54pm Cecile:

we rifled through the record collections of people we babysat for and played the good ones when the kids went to sleep.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:54pm stingy d:

@100% dc p- you probly right. was pretty dissappointed by van garderen at the tour, another one who looked like he could leave his man in the dust, and actually did at one point.

they're youngins tho.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:55pm Cecile:

we kept a list of every song we heard on the college radio station we liked.
we traded tapes...

yeah, it was like another part-time job! But it was fun.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:55pm Cheri Pi:

Oh yes, Torque, I had them too after I moved here. We weren't doing too bad in Cinci but my natural curiosity and exposure to killer music I brought with me, I'm not sure if I would have turned out this weird had I not moved around...QUeensryche lived in my neighborhood!!!
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:56pm Cecile:

I was leaning toward weird, but a year in Australia turned me completely weird.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:56pm Torque:

I remember a friend buying Never Miind The Bollocks and the first Van Halen LP on the same day. Listening to both of those blew my mind. I didn't know which way to turn, so I just rotated in circles and blew a 1/2 a noisy.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:57pm Torque:

Australia? You were probably listening to Angel City over there. I am sooo over-posting. Sorry. You got me going.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:57pm Cheri Pi:

I loved Dio & Duran Duran when I was 14....
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:57pm 100% real dc pat:

stinj: it'll be interesting to see what happens next year with Wiggins vs Froome. He's hinted at moving on already..
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:58pm 100% real dc pat:

when I was 14 all I cared about was the Who and Kinks. Then when I was 15 I found out about the Pistols and that was it. "Punk rock changed my life"
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:58pm Cecile:

Torque, no it was before Angel City.
It was Skyhooks, Sherbet, Little River Band and this new group AC/DC. Also a ton of funk, glam, and 60s garage band I never heard in the States.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:59pm Torque:

Is that Wiggins as in Shaggs Wiggins? @Cecile - I saw a live clip of Little River Band the other day. I have to say I've reconsidered them. They were pretty damned good live.
  Thu. 8/30/12 12:59pm 100% real dc pat:

Cecile: yeah, it's funny how the whole world loves US-style garage music except the US.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:00pm Cecile:

That's about the same time it happened to me, dcp. When I was 14, I said Elton John was my favorite artist, even though he wasn't because I didn't want to say Charley Pride or 3 Dog Night.
The next year I was a raving Skyhooks and AC/DC fan, and could parse and diagram the top 40 in my sleep.
Thu. 8/30/12 1:01pm Chris from DC:

This Hour of 13 is most excellent.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:01pm Torque:

Was Brian Johnson'd 'Geordie' an Aussie band? I'm thinking Scottish. At any rate, always thought he did an admirable job of 'trying' to fill-in for Bon.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:02pm Cecile:

Torque, critics were surprised when they and AC/DC broke in the states before Sherbet and Skyhooks. But both bands werent' afraid of touring forever. Before about '78, LRB were halfway decent.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:02pm Kalm:

Jeez, what's next, Deicide?
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:03pm ian gillan:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:03pm Kalm:

Nice! Deep Purple. RIP Jon Lord. I saw Ian Gillan do this solo circa '76. Very fine. When I first heard that organ, I was sure it was Vincent Crane of Atomic Rooster.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:04pm 100% real dc pat:

Bradley Wiggins, 2012 winner of the Tour de France, gold medalist in 2012 Olympic time trial....AND he's a mod.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:04pm Cheri Pi:

*flick (sniff)
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:04pm Cecile:

They were British. Brian Johnson was a Geordie, from Northeast Britain. Prolly spiritual cousins with the Scots, though.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:05pm Torque:

Cecile, you know almost everything. You probably even remember Gary Thain and David Byron.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:05pm philthy:

Deep Purple at the height of their powers. Thanks for this.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:05pm Cecile:

dcp, it's like that with deep soul and funk and techno, and free jazz and about 15 other genres. It bums me out.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:06pm Cecile:

I don't remember Gary Thain, but I remember David Byon. From Uriah Heep. Skyhooks supported them on their first American tour.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:06pm Torque:

Ian Paice. Maybe the best rock drummer of all.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:07pm Torque:

Gary Thain was Uriah's bassist. Great one. He was electrocuted onstage and died not long after of complications. RIP.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:07pm Cecile:

I remember David Byron. He led Uriah Heep who Skyhooks supported on their first American tour.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:08pm Cecile:

I didn't know Gary Thain, but turns out he was in Heep as well. I wasn't a Uriah Heep fan.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:08pm Torque:

Here's a good one. Deep Purple at California Jam '74 - Coverdale singing "Burn" with Glenn Hughes. Fantastic.

RIP John Lord....what an amazing band Mark II was
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:12pm Rocky:

A Natural choice for Jesus Christ Superstar. Ian.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:13pm Torque:

Tommy Bolin wasn't made for Deep Purple. I did like him with James Gang, though. Standin' In The Rain is a lost classic.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:13pm Cecile:

damn, you almost played Perfect Strangers. Tease.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:13pm 100% real dc pat:

OK, we covered:
1. heavy beer
2. la Vuelta
3. formative rock listening years

No wonder I keep coming back here.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:15pm Cheri Pi:

She giggled too when it came on. What's the next topic ???
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:16pm Cecile:

how f'ing tired one is after a night class when one has not gone to school in nearly 25 years.
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:16pm Cecile:

you're really tired.
Next topic?
  Thu. 8/30/12 1:18pm Cheri Pi:
