On tap this week: a set of live recordings from London's Club Integral, featuring artists as varied as Toolshed, Kenny Process Team, Sean O'Hagan, and Bing Selfish; an unreleased album from J.D. King & the Coachmen; demos from Septimania; and a 1987 concert by the band Nimal.
  Tue. 8/14/12 11:10am Carmichael:

Hey there Tony, just back from a long vacation and ready to hear the hiss!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 11:45am tonyc:

Hiya, Carmichael! There's heavy hissing ahead....
Tue. 8/14/12 11:45am listener james from westwood:

good tuesday all, and happy hissday, tony!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 11:47am tonyc:

Hey there, listener-of-hiss james!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 11:54am tonyc:

And hello also to all you other hisseners.....
  Tue. 8/14/12 11:58am Kay:

My heart is all wow and flutter.
Tue. 8/14/12 12:00pm Mitt the Hoople:

hey there dude, looking forward to an afternoon full of hiss!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:01pm Doug S.:

The hissing of summer Tony!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:01pm tonyc:

Greetings, Kay and Mitt the Hoople! I'm playing lots of CD-Rs today, actually, not just cassettes, so we'll have to come up with some CD-R-based puns.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:02pm tonyc:

And greetings too to Doug!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:03pm northguineahills:

Sean O'Hagan, this could be fun.....
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:05pm ?:

Howdy, TC! I'm sure all your non-silver CDs will be pure gold!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:06pm tonyc:

Hola, northguineahills and ?!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:06pm Jeremy:

Oops, Jeremy here, not "?"
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:08pm Mysterians:

What are we, chopped liver?
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:08pm tonyc:

Jeremy & the Mysterians!
Tue. 8/14/12 12:09pm Mitt the Hoople:

Reminds me of the Bernardo Bertolucci film the Last Emperor!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:11pm Manuel:

Hola amigos!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:13pm Carmichael:

I'm still having auto-refresh issues with comments while in fancy mode. Kenzo, are you out there? I'm using IE9. Do I need to adjust something? Switching to basic ....
Tue. 8/14/12 12:13pm Mitt the Hoople:

been digging into your archives TC (1997-01), have your musical tastes changed or broadened since then?
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:13pm tonyc:

Heya, Manuel! A whole lot of hola to you as well!
Tue. 8/14/12 12:15pm Mitt the Hoople:

Carmichael,
I'm using IE7 and having the same problem although the over wide comments are sorted out.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:15pm Michael:

Lovely version of this tune. Hiya TC and all.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:15pm tonyc:

@ Mitt the Hoople: I'm probably not the one to ask that question! Can't think of anything I liked back then that I no longer like, anyhow.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:15pm Ricardo Montalban:

Greetings, Tony, everybodeez!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:16pm tonyc:

Greetings, Michael and Ricardo M!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:19pm northguineahills:

Pretty sparse for Sean O'Hagan. Usually he has rather lush arrangements.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:20pm BSI:

ah..... got here just in time to take me spacey vitamins...
Tue. 8/14/12 12:21pm Mitt the Hoople:

having listened to some of the archives and without sounding presumptious or an arrogant tosser, I would say back then you tended to play mainly 70s prog, 60s psych, and the modern experimental that you tend to find in the Cunerform catelogue.
Now I would say you are really open to any musical style, spoken word, weird as hell sounds that are out there.
Thats what I like about your show!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:21pm tonyc:

Have any of you U.K.-ers ever been to Club Integral?

Hello there, BSI!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:21pm Snortley:

Spelling police here; that first cut was, I believe, by Sun Zhou.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:22pm Snortley:

Oops; Sun Zhuo.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:23pm Jeremy:

I saw Sean O'Hagan play Irving Plaza around 2002 with just a guitar and he was completely drowned out by the crowd, who were amped for Stereolab. It was pretty rough, though I hear the London crowds can be pretty disrespectful as well...
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:23pm tonyc:

@ Snortley: Had to check that spelling myself -- it is a strange one!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:23pm Jason Elbogen:

This is nice, Tony. Still Tool Shed?
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:24pm tonyc:

Jason!!! Yep, it is still Toolshed.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:25pm Ricardo Montalban:

I like this. It's like music from the Intergalactic House of Pancakes. Pass the syrup, General.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:27pm northguineahills:

I think I was at that show, Jeremy.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:27pm northguineahills:

I think I was at that show, Jeremy.
Tue. 8/14/12 12:27pm Mitt the Hoople:

Its got John Cooper Clarke similarities this track!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:30pm kat330:

Hey, everybody, let's get *real*!

Hi, tony and all!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:32pm tonyc:

Hi there, Kat!
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:33pm kat330:

And welcome home from the 'hoe, Carm! Was it everything I imagined it would be? ;)
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:33pm kat330:

Tony, been loving this hiss from the kitchen. Still loving it now in my office.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:35pm tonyc:

Now your love is official, I guess. (Sorry!)
Tue. 8/14/12 12:36pm Van in DC:

Hi Tony
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:36pm tonyc:

Van the Man! Greetings....
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:37pm kat330:

Yes, tony, it's an everlasting love -- until at least 3pm anyway. ;)
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:42pm tonyc:

There are lots of great youtube videos of live music at Club Integral here: www.youtube.com...
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:45pm Carmichael:

It was more, kat. Two weeks of bliss, peace and sunburn. And icy cold water.
  Tue. 8/14/12 12:48pm kat330:

Mmmm. Minus the sunburn, indeed sounds *more* than -- esp. the icy cold water. Don't understand the wimps who won't dip a toe in Tahoe or Yellowstone Lake, nor the ocean off Nantucket and parts north in the Atlantic. I became accustomed to colder water during my spelunking days here in limestone country.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 12:54pm tonyc:

A cover of the Band!

Coming up after this set: a complete unreleased album by J.D. King & the Coachmen.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:00pm tonyc:

That's after this track. The Coachmen, by the way, were Thurston Moore's first band, in the late '70s.
  Tue. 8/14/12 1:01pm Ricardo Montalban:

Oh, yes. I remember seeing ads for Coachmen on Thurston's label in Forced Exposure in the mid 80s.
  Tue. 8/14/12 1:14pm Ricardo Montalban:

I'm getting a sort of Sandy Bull vibe from this.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:17pm tonyc:

Or Sandy Bull meets Half Japanese, maybe?
  Tue. 8/14/12 1:21pm kat330:

Loving the guitar work -- finding the work of the tambourine man/woman a bit iffy at times.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:25pm tonyc:

I kind of like the way the tambourine knocks things off-kilter a bit....
  Tue. 8/14/12 1:27pm northguineahills:

d'oh, I over cooked my tortillas, I guess I'm tostadas rather then tacos.
  Tue. 8/14/12 1:27pm tonyr:

same j.d. king who had comics in weirdo magazine?
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:28pm tonyc:

@ tonyr: Yes! He's a graphic artist as well
  Tue. 8/14/12 1:29pm kat330:

@ngh: Careful, you're in danger of losing your Barn Show concession! Also, sounds like code for something dirty. ;)
  Tue. 8/14/12 1:30pm Ricardo Montalban:

Oh wow! I had no idea that was THAT J.D. King! I think he was also a contributor to Psychotronic Magazine too, if I'm not mistaken.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:30pm tonyc:

The one and only....
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:34pm tonyc:

Those long pauses between tracks are making me nervous. That's how the King wanted it, though.
Tue. 8/14/12 1:36pm erik in vt:

Hello Tony,(and listeners).
Tony, so great to hear yer voice again!
Thanx for the great catch-up/info email.
I really can't believe it took me so long to get to this format...
I mean I'm in a cabin in the woods listening to the great TC LIVE!
As always, enjoying the show, but really looking fwrd to NIMAL!.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:37pm tonyc:

Erik! Great to see you here! Erik was a big influence on some of my early FMU shows, thanks to the great mix tapes he used to send me.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:44pm tonyc:

Coming up next: a set of demos from Septimania.
Tue. 8/14/12 1:47pm erik in vt:

I vaguely remember, u were going to lose yer show on Columbia radio?
And i really encouraged u to please continue @FMU !!!
The efforts u made getting there on public trans/dragging vinyl, etc...
Is that at all close....?
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:51pm tonyc:

Took me around an hour to get to FMU when I was in Brooklyn. Now I broadcast from my house, so the travel time is pretty minimal.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:54pm tonyc:

Oh, you didn't mean close in the distance sense! Yes -- I did get a show at FMU 'cause I thought I was going to lose my KCR show (which as it turned out I didn't).
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 1:57pm tonyc:

Of course, doing a show on FMU turned out to be much more fun than being on KCR (sorry KCR).
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:00pm Manuel:

wow this "dawn van fleet" is groovy
Tue. 8/14/12 2:00pm erik in vt:

Thats right, i remember now...We were lucky, u broadcast 2 diff shows in a week(on 2 stations)!
Sorry,i missed some of the band members in Septimania.
Could u name them again @ some point? --GREAT stuff(love the perc&vox sounds).
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:01pm kat330:

I'm guessing that Dawn Van Fleet is a tribute to Captain Beefheart.
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:02pm Ike:

Hearing Tony on both stations back then was very cool. The every-other-week WKCR show was great. But then I really like experimental.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:02pm Mitt the Hoople:

yes Kat reminds me also of the Magic Band!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:02pm tonyc:

@ kat330: Right you are!

@ erik in vt: Not so much band members as guests (Septimania is basically Jonathan Thomas plus guests)
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:04pm tonyc:

Anyhow, the guests on these Septimania tracks include Guigou Chenever, Michael Maksymenko, and Ralf Nygard
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:05pm kat330:

I'm clearly a great fan of homophonic puns, as my limericks attest. :) Tried to come up with CD-R puns. Mitt the Hoople made me think of CD-ROMney, but I quickly put it aside.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:07pm tonyc:

Hey there, Ike! I loved having an outlet for that stuff on KCR, but the actual experience of being at the station wasn't as much fun as doing a show on FMU. Not that there's anything wrong with KCR, mind you -- just my experience.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:15pm tonyc:

NIMAL was: Momo Rossel: guitar, hurdy-gurdy, bouzouki; Jean-Vincent Huguenin: guitar, bass, keyboards; Pippin Barnett: drums; Tom Cora: cello; Bratko Bibic: accordion
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:18pm northguineahills:

Wow, Tom Cora was Nimal? Good to find other material he played in.
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:19pm kat330:

Thanks for that info, Tony. All combinations of those instruments are sounding very nice. Is NIMAL an acronym you know about? I notice it's DJ Lamin in reverse.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:20pm tonyc:

Dunno what Nimal means/ refers to....
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:22pm tonyc:

Maybe it's an acronym for Not in My Alpine Lodge? They were a Swiss group after all....
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:23pm kat330:

Maybe sounding like in French "not bad." Well, there's nothing bad whatsoever!

:) Good guess.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:23pm tonyc:

By the by, this Nimal is the one actual cassette of today's show....
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:26pm kat330:

This track would be great as a soundtrack for some action/adventure, esp. somewhere in northern Africa or the Middle East.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:34pm tonyc:

It's amazing how distinctive the sound of Cora's cello-playing is -- couldn't be anyone else.
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:36pm Doug Schulkind:

@kat330, I love your comment! Especially because my show tonight here on the stream (6-7pm) will sound EXACTLY LIKE the soundtrack to an action/adventure film somewhere in N. Africa or the Middle East. I am calling today's show "Lovers of Arabia."
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Funny thing: When you search "Lovers of Arabia" under Google Images, you get mostly gay porn posters.
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:40pm kat330:

Heh! C'mon, Doug, admit it: You only love the perfect segue I offered you. ;) I was just going to add that most of these Nimal tracks would go very well with film.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:41pm tonyc:

I doubt "Lovers of Poland" would give you the same search results (not that there's anything wrong with that).
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:43pm kat330:

There must be an Australian match site called Lovers Down Under.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:44pm tonyc:

Ouch.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:44pm Mitt the Hoople:

perhaps those films would be
Lawrence of Arabia or The Sheltering Sky?
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:46pm kat330:

And some of the great documentaries from and on the region, too -- or something yet to be filmed.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:46pm Mitt the Hoople:

do you remember that superb Peter Gabriel soundtrack album, was it Passion or sources for the film passion of Christ
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:47pm tonyc:

Don't know that Gabriel soundtrack, no.
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:50pm tonyc:

Nice to hear the hurdy-gurdy in this (non-folk) context.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:50pm Mitt the Hoople:

Kat,
do you any good documentaries about the Middle East, as I am always on the lookout for stuff like that?
Tue. 8/14/12 2:52pm Van in DC:

@Mitt - it was "Passion" by Gabriel, the OST for Last Temptation of Christ movie.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:54pm Mitt the Hoople:

thanks Van,
that album's music was a bit more understated that Nimal, but had the same powerful spiritual feel.
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:55pm kat330:

@Mitt: I do, but my head's not able to list in such a short time as is left. Next time maybe?

In the meanwhile, I'll leave you all with this of mine:
You know some Lovers in Arabia are Lovers of Great Britain. Case in point:

My Moroccan friend, Benjam, was smitten
By wanderlust, thus I have written:
Segovia Spain
Khachaturian train,
'Ere long you'll be, Benjam, in Britten.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:55pm erik in vt:

Typical !? -
U have all this music minutia emmersion knowledge, but haven't heard Gabriel's "Passion" sndtrk...Jeez.
Also Passion "sources" was a 'world music comp' on realworld label.
@Mitt, Have u seen the film "LATCHO DROM" -great all around the world 'gypsy' music.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:56pm Van in DC:

I'm rarely of any help knowledge-wise in music here, but Gabriel is one of my all time favorite artists :)

Thanks tonyc
  Tue. 8/14/12 2:57pm kat330:

Thanks for the boffo hiss today, TonyC! Bye folks!
Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks anyway.
Tue. 8/14/12 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Tue. 8/14/12 2:59pm tonyc:
