Jobritish A.D.:

does anyone know anything about the latest batch of Zappa reissues - Freak out to Hot Rats -- do they sound any different to the earlier reissues in the 90s etc?
Avatar 12:31pm
ricardo montalban:

I believe they have been remastered, yes. That's my understanding.
Avatar 12:32pm
ricardo montalban:

With that Lumpy Money CD, you get the original mono masters, a bunch of outtakes and the crappy 80s remix.
  12:32pm
Jobritish A.D.:

take it you have'nt heard them yet Rich?
Avatar 12:33pm
ricardo montalban:

I have just the Lumpy Money one. I am thinking about getting the others.
  12:34pm
Jobritish A.D.:

So caution - do not buy without trying first?
Avatar 12:35pm
ricardo montalban:

It's just funny that the Zappa family trust has chosen to release the much maligned 80s mixes where Zappa overdubbed the Mothers with newer musicians
  12:36pm
Jobritish A.D.:

what was the label they were on originally in the 60s - was it Verve?
Avatar 12:38pm
ricardo montalban:

Yes
  12:40pm
Jobritish A.D.:

never actually seen Verve reissue them,, but do remember Ryko reissues.
  12:47pm
northguineahills:

I've used that SY track as a nice downtempo piece for a club djing.
Avatar 12:48pm
ricardo montalban:

The Ryko ones (usually in the green-tinged case) are the ones where he remixed everything, used annoying new percussion, etc. I think Scott Thunes redubbed all the bass with these rubbery basslines/
Avatar 12:49pm
ricardo montalban:

@northguineahills: that's probably the funkiest SY track ever, no?
  12:51pm
northguineahills:

@ricardo: True, it actually works in that context, surprisingly.
  12:52pm

The Cleo McNett pic isn't showing; take the forward slash out of the end of the URL tag.
  12:57pm
Honey Water:

Hello, Rich! I tuned in late, but hope you can help me identify a snippet of some classical piece in the past 30-40 mins. MIGHT have been in the Bell Lab piece? And it MIGHT have been an orchestra phrase by Grieg?
Avatar 12:57pm
ricardo montalban:

I think it was an orchestral piece used in the Bell Record
Avatar 12:58pm
ricardo montalban:

Hi Honey Water and thanks for the fixit tip, Snortley!
  12:58pm
Honey Water:

Yeah, does it identify which one?
Avatar 12:59pm
ricardo montalban:

Not sure. It came with a big book
  1:00pm
Honey Water:

As soon as I heard it, it reminded me I used to play it on the piano but had completely forgotten about it.

OK, thanks, I'll track it down somehow. :)
Avatar 1:02pm
ricardo montalban:

Good luck! I just have the album on CDR. I think i have the book's scan somewhere, too.
Avatar 1:07pm

This cassette came from a live radio broadcast on KAOS in Olympia in 1982 and is this band's only release.
  1:12pm
Snortley:

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyhlolg1Rn1r4upg6o1_1280.jpg
  1:12pm
Honey Water:

Well, at least I've confirmed the mystery snippet was from "Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc. The Science of Sound." Still not the title of it or composer. Could be from Carmen if not a Grieg piece.
Avatar 1:17pm
ricardo montalban:

That's great!
  1:17pm
Van in DC:

So I came in late and have since been in and out (work)...so I've missed a lot today...is this being archived? (I'm guessing not as this is Tape Hiss I think...?)
Avatar 1:19pm
ricardo montalban:

This will be archived, I believe
  1:20pm
Van in DC:

Oh okay, cool :)
Avatar 1:21pm

Avatar 1:25pm
ricardo montalban:

It's a brief run through the Tellus Cassette Magazine series
  1:28pm
northguineahills:

I got to do a live dj thingy w/ multiples of a collection of Tellus pieces pressed onto vinyl (an edition of 100), it was called Tellus tools. However, after the performance, all the dj's had to return the records, and we would have to buy them just like everyone else. :(

  1:33pm
northguineahills:

It was around 2003ish.
  1:37pm
listener james from westwood:

this is great. i have no idea where anything is going or what the next cut will be about. how people can listen to the same 7 songs over & over on top 40 radio over the course of a workday is beyond me. thanks ricardo!
Avatar 1:38pm
ricardo montalban:

Thank you, James! Glad you're diggin' the unpredictableness.
  1:39pm
Jobritish A.D.:

Great point james,
top 40 radio is made for robotic dullards!
  1:40pm
northguineahills:

@ listener james: I've been listening to all of my physical musical media (cassette, recs, cds, etc) in alphabetical order since Sept 2008. Right now, I'm up to the Vaselines. So, I haven't listened to the same song in the last four years (unless it's outside of my control).
  1:41pm
Van in DC:

I'm certain that if I could patch all of this in to play in the elevators here, the workplace would be a much happier place :)
  1:42pm
Lewis:

@northguuineahills - I have been considering the same project but by simply starting my iTunes at the top of the songs list and letting it run. Not sure I have your discipline though (and how do you deal with new additions?)
  1:44pm
Jobritish A.D.:

james, all the media are to blame especially today when they say things are good when they are not, they hide the good stuff under layers of mediocre crap,
when you used to find something good 1 in every 10 items, its now something like 1 out of 100!
  1:44pm
northguineahills:

New additions get played as soon as they're acquired in the order they're in. If they're further in the alphabet from where I am, I'll listen to them again, otherwise, that's it. So, I guess there have been some pieces that have been heard more then once in the last 4 years.
Avatar 1:44pm
ricardo montalban:

I've come to the conclusion that it's a really, really small segment of the population that enjoys unfamiliarity and unpredictableness in music
  1:44pm
Lewis:

@listenerjames - couldn't agree more - i often wonder at how many different musical bits I have heard and at how few of them I hear more than once.
  1:46pm
Lewis:

@northguineahills - you give me inspiration! I wonder how my household would react?...
  1:48pm
Honey Water:

@Van, speaking of happy workplaces: Which city is tops when it comes to having the most workers who swear on the job?

1. Chicago, IL
2. Phoenix, AZ
3. Washington, D.C.
  1:49pm
Lewis:

@ricardo montalban - couldn't agree more. The known path is comfortable and safe, while an hour or so of Tellus cassettes is interesting and challenging!
  1:49pm
Van in DC:

4. Detroit? :)

I'm guessing DC...

Well, So far I've found my fiance (of 5 years), hates the Beatles, most techno/house music, classic rock, and she has a very negative visceral reaction to Rick Wakefield. However, most avant stuff & noise doesn't phase her.
  1:51pm
Honey Water:

@Van: Ding, ding, ding! I was reserving that for a time when you, Matt, BSI, Chris, Pat & Chris were all on a playlist. But I wanted to post it before I die. Besides I'll be very scarce around these parts for a couple of weeks.
  1:51pm
northguineahills:

But, I suppose listening to the Beatles non-stop for almost two weeks would drive most sane people insane. I'm obviously not of the latter category.

Hey Rich,
do you think there will be a new phenomenon - youtube video collecting?
  2:39pm
Honey Water:

Oh, happy day!! I finally located the title of the earlier earworm on that Bell Lab track: It is indeed Grieg, and it is from his Lyric Pieces, Book 8, Op. 65: No. 6. "Wedding-Day at Troldhaugen." I'll be able to sleep tonight, thank gawd.

Rich, you offered up some very fine selections today -- a reflection of Tony's good taste in selecting you to sub for him. :) Thanks! And have a great week everyone!

Note: If you want to feel exhausted sitting in your easy chair watching any of the Olympics, just watch some water polo.
