Matt - neighbours finally decided to get the 40 foot monsters taken down before they come through one of our ceilings :)

Sun is shining, chainsaws have stopped... huzzah!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:16am Krypt:

Hi Meghan, you got good taste, an observation and contribution both.
Avatar    Thu. 7/26/12 6:17am Meghan:

Thanks Krypt! Glad you are enjoying
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:18am davice:

Who decided to call that thing a uvula?
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:19am Simon:

I always thought that was the epyglotis
Thu. 7/26/12 6:19am Matt from Springfield:

@OD: Good to know! So very many trees all over northern Virginia here--they make the place look really nice, but when those storms hit...There's a large forest behind me in fact, but sufficiently far away from my actually house.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:19am Simon:

eppiglotis even
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:20am Wikipedia:

"In Latin, ūvula means 'little grape', the diminutive form of ūva 'grape' (of unknown origin). A swollen uvula was called "ūva." "
Thu. 7/26/12 6:21am Matt from Springfield:

So be glad you have just a little grape and not a big grape!

I'm more focused on the "Hind Wall of Oro-Pharynx", that's a band name we need to see...
Thu. 7/26/12 6:24am fred von helsing:

cool tune !
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:24am Dave B:

Epiglotis is the gateway between breathing and swallowing..
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:24am Simon:

So it's ben the wettest May, June July on record here. Everyone saying the olympics would be a wash-out. Then a week before the show begins, ta-da the sun comes out. beautiful sunny weather 7 days on the bounce. The forecast for the opening ceremony tomorrow - Thunderstorms and rain. This is what it means to be British!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:26am Simon:

Gotta dash, great first set. See you later
Thu. 7/26/12 6:26am Matt from Springfield:

Thu. 7/26/12 6:30am Matt from Springfield:

Louis Jordan classic! Excellent choice for a "Mouth" show!
Thu. 7/26/12 6:34am Matt from Springfield:

@Meghan: Was looking through my Beach Boys songs, finally found what I was thinking of! "Take A Load Off Your Feet" from Surf's Up! Consider that for any "foot" episode!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:35am FourLoko:

Liking the old tymey stuff.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:36am Andy in Berlin:

there was a time when I used to have swollen uvulas a couple of times a year. I couldn't say why and I have no idea why it stopped.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:37am Dave B:

Joe Jackson was the gateway for me to these old timey songs with "Jumpin' Jive" back in '81
Thu. 7/26/12 6:39am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

If you do a "heart" theme I'll share a funny NSFW list of tunes with you.
Avatar    Thu. 7/26/12 6:40am Meghan:

Oh Andy..... that sounds miserable! When I was a kid I thought your tonsils were your uvula....

Dave, I think it was swing music that got me into the older stuff....
Thu. 7/26/12 6:41am Matt from Springfield:

@DaveB: Diddo with my Dad! And later myself! "Jumpin' Jive" is a fantastic album, and a broad introduction to various classics of the "jive" era. "You Run Your Mouth..", "San Francisco Fan", "Jack You Dead", "What's The Use of Getting Sober (When You're Gonna Get Drunk Again)"...
Thu. 7/26/12 6:41am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

I also thought the uvula was tonsils.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:42am other david:

Two great sets to start with, hurrah for mouth songs!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:42am davice:

What is the purpose of the tonsils? Is it to keep the uvula company?
Thu. 7/26/12 6:43am Matt from Springfield:

"Diddy Boppin' and Motor Mouthin"!! First heard this from Joe McG! This is a good one!
Thu. 7/26/12 6:44am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

The tonsils are the admission to an all-you-can-eat ice cream buffet. I'm pretty certain that's their sole purpose.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:44am Dave B:

@Matt / Meghan - and it pre-dated the swing revival of the 90s by 10~15 years. But it got me digging into my mom's 78 collection as an early teen!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:46am FourLoko:

thanks for the shout out to the J-man!
Thu. 7/26/12 6:47am Matt from Springfield:

Any lead-in to 78 records is a very good thing!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:47am adenoids:

I get no respect!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:47am Caryn:

Hello all! Dammit, slept in and missed the start :(
The archives will be calling.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:47am Matt from Springfield:

I still have my tonsils...and you'll take them FROM MY COLD DEAD THROAT!!!
Thu. 7/26/12 6:47am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

I still have my tonsils.

Nice use of "interwebs."
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:48am Captain Asswipe:

Diggin
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:48am FourLoko:

good one, adenoids!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:49am Dave B:

got mines!

(they produce antibodies)
Thu. 7/26/12 6:49am Matt from Springfield:

Although, tonsils are "the immune system's first line of defense against ingested or inhaled foreign pathogens. However, the fundamental immunological roles of tonsils have yet to be understood." Apparently you have tonsils removed if they become infected, and thus more trouble than they're worth. But they're a subtle little organ.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:49am Caryn:

I have my tonsils, but am still hoping that ice cream buffet is in my future. There are two sets of tonsils, and they're both immunocompetent tissue, so they're considered the first line of defence against any pathogens that you breathe in.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:49am FourLoko:

Why do they make us answer math questions to post? Is having basic addition skills a prerequisite to liking independent radio?
Thu. 7/26/12 6:50am Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: "Interwebs" and "inter-tubes" come pretty standard on WFMU!

Good morning Caryn!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:50am other david:

I have my tonsils and I'm gobbling ice cream, win win!

Thu. 7/26/12 6:51am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

You don't have to solve math if you post via the mobile app.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:51am fred von helsing:

"Subtle Little Organ", that's a band name
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:51am davice:

  Thu. 7/26/12 6:52am FourLoko:

@BadGuyZero, but my phone is upstairs and I haven't had enough coffee yet to warrant the trip! Good tip though. Math @ 7 am sucks.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:52am Andy in Berlin:

@ Meghan: At first I just assumed it was a sore throat but then my doctor pointed out that it was my uvula swelling to a size that when I swallowed, my throat muscles were pulling on it.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:52am Matt from Springfield:

@FourLoko: To keep spam-bots out. Though some listeners have suggested making the math questions harder on Friday nights, to keep the drunk commenters out!
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:53am davice:

Swing low, sweet uvula, coming forth to swallow you down
Avatar    Thu. 7/26/12 6:53am Meghan:

The math questions are for the bots out there..... I guess bots can't do math.... who'd thunk!
Thu. 7/26/12 6:53am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

@Matt: I like to acknowledge their use occasionally because "interwebs" makes me smile.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:53am Caryn:

Actually, 5 tonsils in the body: palatine tonsils (these are the ones you have taken out), cerebellar tonsils, (naso)pharyngeal tonsil (the adenoids), tubal tonsils and lingual tonsils.

@davice: heh!
Thu. 7/26/12 6:54am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

I have never had a math question that involved carrying a one.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:54am Matt from Springfield:

@FVH: SLO, with either a subtle little organ, or a massive pipe organ at the center of its performances.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:55am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

The uvula was often referred to as "the punching bag" when I was in elementary school.
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:55am davice:

@Caryn - what purpose do each of these serve?
  Thu. 7/26/12 6:56am davice:

Meghan - will you ever do a show on the naughty bits?
Avatar    Thu. 7/26/12 6:56am Meghan:

Yup..... I was surprised when I heard it had a name other than punching bag!

And no, you will never have to carry any numbers... but I do like the drunk filter....

  Thu. 7/26/12 6:58am Dave B:

ahead of the curve Meghan! That Phantogram image had me searching for Plymptoon. I coulda sworn there was one where the guy cracks his yob big enough to swallow his head, and just kept looping.
Thu. 7/26/12 6:58am Matt from Springfield:

Battle of the Organs!
Thu. 7/26/12 7:00am fred von helsing:

Yes! And to the loser -- utter organ humiliation !
  Thu. 7/26/12 7:02am davice:

I guess the loser will need to move on - transplant as it were

Thu. 7/26/12 7:05am fred von helsing:

hey yeah what was that goofy 70s horror-or-sci-fi flick where someone got a schlong transplant? was that a frankenstein ripoff? am I thinking rocky horror?
Thu. 7/26/12 7:05am dirty old man:

Wow what an erudite conversation on the board today, it's intimidating. Here goes: yes, I still have my tonsils and speaking of "subtle little organs".......
  Thu. 7/26/12 7:06am Dave B:

@BGZ - http://www.negrophonic.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/bjorkdiddy.gif
  Thu. 7/26/12 7:06am Caryn:

@BGZ: various WB cartoons certainly have miniaturised characters punching them like ones.
@davice: oops, forgot cerebral tonsils, so 6 types. The cerebral and cerebellar ones are in the brain. The cerebellar tonsils are involved in the functioning of the cerebellum, such as controlling motor functions and sensory information.
The other 4 are in the nasal cavity and back of the throat, close to each other and seem to mostly have the immunological function. The lingual tonsils and adenoids are also part of the lymphatic system.
  Thu. 7/26/12 7:07am Benjamin:

This song makes me think of the first comic shop I worked at.

Super DAVE! Ha! We were talking about him not too long ago. What is he working on?
  Thu. 7/26/12 8:02am Chuck:

And isn't 'uvula' not only a funny word, but a funny structure. What is it's purpose?
  Thu. 7/26/12 8:03am davice:

to hang about
Thu. 7/26/12 8:04am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

"Super Dave" as in Bob Einstein (brother of Albert Brooks) who now portrays Marty Funkhauser on "Curb Your Enthusiasm"???
  Thu. 7/26/12 8:04am Chuck:

A fountain, Meg. I'm making a sort of "waste mold" out of a section of it in Forton. He only needs 4 to 6 plater castings and it's only a proto-type, so why spend big $ on rubber?
  Thu. 7/26/12 8:05am Chuck:

Damn, I'm totally not awake yet. I keep miss spelling things and I hate that...
  Thu. 7/26/12 8:07am Chuck:

Not even close, BadGuyZero. Someone Meghan and I have worked with...
  Thu. 7/26/12 8:08am Caryn:

The uvula 1) moves to prevent food from entering the nasal cavity when you swallow. It also 2) plays a role in articulation. People with very small uvulas may talk very nasally and have trouble saying certain consonants, such as b (it comes out as an m). It is especially important in languages that have uvular consonants or click consonants.

HA HA HA!

Well, see.... this is why I stay pink!
Thu. 7/26/12 8:09am BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

At the comic shop we had an oddball assortment of regulars of which 85% were annoying as hell. One day one of 'em had been boring the hell out of me telling me about some role-playing game. Finally he's about to leave and the CD changer switches to Zappa's "You Are What You Is" album. He gets all excited - "I love this record!" - and starts singing along to it. After about five songs I'd had enough. "You know how Frank made this record?" I asked him. He replied "no." "Well he did it without your help so shut up or get the fuck out of the store!" He left.

True story! :D
  Thu. 7/26/12 8:09am Caryn:

Meghan, I think you need to change the font colour if you're going with this background.
