good tuesday all! happy hiss-day, tony!
Avatar 11:57am

Hi there, listener james! And hello to all -- see you in five minutes. Today's show is mostly live music, and mostly (more-or-less) free improv -- the New Trio Opeye are up first.
  11:57am
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

Afternoon TC,
looking forward to another cassette friendly, full hiss, tape show!

Wow! I sure wish I knew what this mutated Pink Floyd cover/ripoff was! Too wild!

Good to be back in the hiss!
  12:05pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

is that Henry K's real name or are you taking the hiss?
  12:05pm
Ricardo Montalban:

hey! I know Scott Braziel! He used to do a mighty fine radio program called The Wiggle Room!
  12:07pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

the bells again Esmeralda!
Avatar 12:08pm
tonyc:

New Trio Opeye = Scott Braziel (of Cartoon) keyboard electronics; Henry & John Kuntz: wind, wood, string, and percussion instruments
Avatar 12:09pm
tonyc:

@ Ricardo Montalban: don't know "The Wiggle Room" -- bet it was good!
  12:10pm
BSI:

speaking of zee hiss: In the late '80s there was a local (DC/MD) space-rock/psych combo called ELEGANT MESS, who did a lovely cassette release called TAPE HISS ...
  12:11pm
Ricardo Montalban:

It's still on, but Scott moved to Cali and Tommy Hollywood, the other host, has gone on a sabbatical.
Avatar 12:12pm
tonyc:

Hey there, BSI! Never hoid of Elegant Mess. May have to sue -- even if they did beat me to the name by 25 years
  12:14pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Wow! THis is amazing!
Avatar 12:15pm
tonyc:

Sure is nothing like Cartoon, Braziel's regular band.
  12:15pm
BSI:

Tony: for what it's worth, Elegant Mess earned great points for flying the spacerock banner way before it became "cool" -- saw a performance at WMUC, was scorchin'.
  12:16pm
BSI:

...actually maybe it never did become "cool"...
  12:17pm
Doug S.:

Enjoying muchly Tony!

Scott just recently released something, under his own name, I think on Bandcamp
Avatar 12:18pm

Hey Doug! I'm muchly glad.

Random note: Henry Kuntz used to perform with Henry Kaiser quite a bit.

Coming up next: a complete 1981 concert by Fred Frith and David Moss.

Hey, Doug! Did Lincoln have a great birthday? Hope so! My crab-man certainly did on Sunday. So you're on the road yet?

A very happy birthday. And for her new iPad, a very appy birthday. (I am jealous.) Not on the road just yet.
  12:31pm
kat330:

Well, have a safe and happy 4th and road trip, Doug!
Avatar 12:33pm

Not much of a road trip from Portland, but I'm going to Tacoma, WA this Thursday. Anyone have any tips?
  12:35pm
Carmichael:

Hiya Tony. Finally made it; let's hope I can hear you. My office roof is getting re-sealed about 3 friggin' feet above me!
  12:36pm
kat330:

Last time in Tacoma was '98 for me, so my tips would be pretty useless. :) Stayed with an L.A. friend who'd moved there and ran (still runs?) a computer BBS called AMOCAT. Guess you can figure why.
Avatar 12:36pm
tonyc:

Hey Carmichael!
  12:36pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

Cartoon? - were they an American 70s prog band with a snakes and ladders album cover?
  12:37pm
Van in DC:

Here real soon, I have to undergo a new PC assignment & "stuff" transfer from my old PC at work. Probably gonna take quite a while, and we are leaving 2 hrs early for holiday anyway...
Avatar 12:39pm
tonyc:

@ RIO Speedwagon: Cartoon were an American prog band -- don't remember any snakes or ladders, though!
  12:39pm
kat330:

Have a glorious and safe 4th, Van!
  12:40pm
Carmichael:

Hey, I have lots of experience with Henry Kaiser and his cronies. He's a San Franciscan, and I used to hang in all the Fred Frith/Richard Thompson/John French circles. Kaiser's a delightfully odd duck.
  12:42pm
Van in DC:

You too Kat!
Avatar 12:42pm
tonyc:

@ Carmichael: Interestingly, these days Kaiser may be as well known for his underwater photography as for his music.
Avatar 12:43pm
tonyc:

There's something so distinctive about the way David Moss uses the steel drums.
  12:45pm
Carmichael:

Ya Tony, I wish I had the wherewithal to do whatever the hell I wanted .....
Avatar 12:46pm
tonyc:

Is his father the Kaiser Dome guy? Is that where his money comes from?
  12:49pm
MrFab:

I always wondered that Tony - I'd look at the liner notes to Arthur Lyman albums ("recorded in Henry Kaiser's giant Aluminum dome!") and I'd do a double-take.
Avatar 12:52pm
tonyc:

Arthur Lyman gave me the idea too! I guess Kaiser Steel is the ultimate source of the moolah?
  12:53pm
kat330:

Speaking of underwater, some of these sound produced remind me of huge boats/ submarine noises.
  12:59pm
kat330:

The Hunt for Red, White & Blue July...
Avatar 1:01pm
tonyc:

Frith & Moss work together very well as a duo, methinks. Wonder why they never released anything.
Avatar 1:02pm
tonyc:

Frith is on David Moss's Dense Band albums, but other than that ... nada.
  1:14pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Got to see some wonderful improv guitar last weekend: Dewey Mahood, Marisa Anderson and Rick Bishop
Avatar 1:16pm
tonyc:

Sir Richard B?
  1:16pm
Carmichael:

Yes Tony, he is of the Kaiser steel fortune.
  1:16pm
Ricardo Montalban:

yes. At Proper Eats in St. Johns
Avatar 1:21pm
tonyc:

I used to be really into improv/noise/whatever in the '80s and '90s, but have been less focused on it since. There are just too many bad AOR records to listen to. I still like some of the improviser types as much as ever, though.
  1:25pm
kat330:

Hate to skip out, but I must go wash this greatlong mop of hair so it has a chance of being dry by morning if not bedtime. Just lost the stream in any case.

Wishing a safe and happy holiday to those celebrating tomorrow and to those abroad as well!
Avatar 1:25pm
tonyc:

The best improvisers seem to me as musical as anything else, so I don't see the point of a lot of the labels like "noise," etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Doug S.:

Did anyone else lose the stream for a moment? If so, just re-click and it should reestablish itself. They may be doing some stream maintenance back at WFMU...
  1:26pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I briefly lost the stream and it skipped down to the next stream in my playlist, "that doesn't sound like TOny's show" I thought.
It's back now.
Avatar 1:26pm
tonyc:

Happy hair-washing, Kat! I lost the stream for a minute too, but it's back.
  1:26pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

talking of noise, everything has gone quiet
  1:27pm
listener james from westwood:

got it on this side.
Avatar 1:27pm
tonyc:

Just reclick the link -- the stream is back.
  1:27pm
Carmichael:

I started listening to Bill Frisell in the 90s, as I found his improv ability and total lack of style interesting. But yes, there's also a LOT of bad commercial music to good naturedly mock.
  1:28pm
Van in DC:

Ya, I lost it as well. The stream, I mean.
Avatar 1:29pm
tonyc:

@Van: Getting it now? Think it only dropped out for less than a minute.
  1:33pm
northguineahills:

This is a different side of the Frith canon.
  1:35pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

Just watched the whole Ken Burns History of Jazz documentary, and when Jazz fused with the Avant garde with Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor, Jazz (to many people) died.
I think the same can be said for rock and pop, especially in the 70s, the whole thing, under the weight of classical prog bands etc, almost collapsed but for punk and new wave that dressed it up in a different way.
Avatar 1:36pm
tonyc:

Saw Frith and Moss play together a couple of times, when they both lived in NYC.
  1:38pm
Van in DC:

Whoops - yes Tony I had reclicked and all has remained well :)
Avatar 1:40pm
tonyc:

@ RIO Speedwagon: I don't even know what avant garde means anymore. Experimental music has been around for so long, it should just be an accepted aspect/flavor of music by now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Doug S.:

@RIO SPEEDWAGON
My personal opinion is that Ken Burns' film Jazz irself is the only thing potentially fatal to the music. It is a reactionary, small-minded, intolerant piece of garbage. Of course, that's just my opinion.
  1:42pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

yes and in a way punk was as experimental ( if not more so) as say Henry Cow, Slapp Happy and News From Babel who they were protesting against!
  1:44pm
northguineahills:

ahh, when the stream went off and I left for a second, my i-Tunes immediately jumped to the primary WFMU stream.
Avatar 1:45pm
tonyc:

@ RIO SPEEDWAGON: Don't think punk was reacting against Henry Cow et al, but against ELP, Yes and those kind of stadium prog bands. Don't forget, John Lydon was/is a big Can fan.
  1:46pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

Doug S,
garbage? well I must be misinformed but there is loads on the origins of Jazz, Louis Armstrong etc that I had not seen or heard.
Although I agree that his post 60s stuff was a little hurried, and too much on Wynton Marsalis as Jazz's saviour!
  1:50pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Agh! It keeps stalling, but rather than buffing, it falls down to the next stream on my playlist. In this case, it's the regular 'Fmu stream.
Avatar 1:51pm
tonyc:

Uh oh -- the streamed dropped out again. But it's back now.
  1:51pm
Van in DC:

Yeah my stream died again too
  1:52pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

TC,
Yes's Tales of the topagraphic ocean album was not that far off what we are listening to now! Or at least further on than say Fragile.
Avatar 1:52pm
tonyc:

I guess one advantage of playing a 90-minute concert is that you won't be confused about which stream you're listening to during these drop-outs.
  1:55pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@Doug S: recently rewatched the Burns' Jazz series and forgot what a drag it is towards the end. @RIO: spot on: the way it made it seem like W Marsalis' Jazz preservation approach was the culmination of all that wonderful history. I wanted to throw a brick at my TV.
Avatar 1:55pm
tonyc:

@ RIO Speedwagon: I'm not dissing Yes, just saying that they were the kind of band punk was reacting against. Lavish stage shows, loads of expensive equipment, long noodlely solos, etc. I like both punk and Yes, personally.
  1:58pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

Ric,
Surely worth watching for the hours of footage of Armstrong, Ellington, Charlie Parker etc.
Post 1955 stuff though I agree not interesting nor accurate.
  1:59pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Many of the Jazz-heads I hang with and/or do radio with HATE, HATE, HATE that whole series because of the shaggy dog ending.
Avatar 1:59pm
tonyc:

Re Wynton Marsalis: My single most depressing moment in radio was having to air Marsalis's live version of "A Love Supreme" back when I was working for an NPR station.
  1:59pm
northguineahills:

Yep, I got three chord monty again.

I think the Burns museum piece of a doc was alright until it got to the late 50s. It had people believe that nothing in jazz happened after 1960.
Avatar 2:00pm
tonyc:

Again with the dropouts -- oy!
  2:00pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Maybe Burns will do a documentary series about Punk with the ending being the formation of Green Day or The Offspring!
  2:01pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

tape hiss miss, what a pisser!
Avatar 2:03pm
tonyc:

At least the dropouts are brief. Sunspots, maybe -- or Martians.
  2:04pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

Also gave the impression that Jazz in the States was a dirty word in the 70s. No audience, no record contracts no outlet!
Avatar 2:05pm
tonyc:

Coming up in about 15 minutes: British improviser Adam Bohman, live in 1989, on my old WKCR show.
  2:15pm
BHP:

Beatniks=Hippies=Punks & Vice Versa.
Avatar 2:15pm
tonyc:

I must say most cassettes hold up pretty well physically -- better I suspect than CD-Rs will. I've had this cassette since 1989, and it still sounds just fine.
  2:16pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I've got CDRs from 2001 that are no longer playable.
Avatar 2:17pm
tonyc:

Ditto. A lot of music will be lost as CD-Rs crap out.
  2:19pm
Doug S.:

I believe that the gearheads back at WFMU are doing maintenance work on the station's Interwebs network. If you lose the stream connection, just click again and it seems to reestablish immediately. Sorry for the annoyance.
Avatar 2:21pm
tonyc:

A great little film featuring Adam Bohman: www.youtube.com...
  2:24pm
Van in DC:

k, I have to go. Thanks Tony.
Avatar 2:25pm
tonyc:

Cheers, Van. Thanks for stopping by.
Avatar 2:28pm

Don't know too much about Mark Browne, other than that he is a British guitarist.
  2:31pm
Ricardo Montalban:

This is amazing, Tony!
Avatar 2:32pm
tonyc:

By the way, next week's regular (non-"Tape Hiss") show will be an all-Israeli special. The fill-in for Nachum Segal I never got to do, I guess.
Avatar 2:33pm
tonyc:

@ Ricardo M: Yeah, it is great. Adam gave it to me ages ago. Don't know why it never came out.
  2:42pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

TC,
great idea!
- expecting loads of Svika Pick, Shlomo Gronich, Tamouz, Chaim David Saracik, Zingale, Danny Ben Israel etc.
Avatar 2:44pm
tonyc:

Well, 4 of those 6 anyway....
  2:48pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

forgot the weird jazz folk rock band - Sheshet!
Avatar 2:49pm
tonyc:

Yep -- they'll be in there.
  2:50pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

also the band Zingale mutated into (out of)?

Sounds awesome, tony!

@ RIO Speedwagon: Do you mean Atmosphera? Don't have anything by them, unfortunately.
  2:54pm
listener james from westwood:

stray tech glitches didn't keep this from being a very fine listen. thanks, tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm
Doug S.:

Stray Tech Glitches is the name of the Drummer Stream's new show!
  2:57pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

yes - thats the band - had a double cd/dvd remaster of them that I bought in Jerusalem in 2006. A bit Yes like.
  2:58pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON (Slapp Henry):

one of your best shows TC, thanks and I really enjoyed it!
Avatar 2:59pm
tonyc:

@ Listener James: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I'm still not quite sure of the wisdom/folly of playing complete concerts when they're long -- but on balance I think it's worth doing, since they wouldn't get heard otherwise.

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Coming up tonight at 6pm, I will celebrate Idaho's 122nd anniversary of becoming a state by playing an hour of songs about the potato.

At 7pm, Kaminsky Kamoutsky with Jesse will hit the stream. Jesse will share the mic with the "mostly" comedy troupe Union Square Round Table!

Both shows will be LIVE on the stream!
