Lovely.

this is like a drink of cool water after the smoky haze of Bryce's show. not that I didn't love the smoky haze!

Wow, Bennink doing Dolphy!
  3:22pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

The gif actually works really well with flamenco. Oddly.
  3:24pm
kat330:

Loving all this. If commenters are less active than when the music is rawking raucous or weird, it's not because we're enjoying it any less. Just a note for the record.

Wow, Braxton doing Gillespie (don't recognize it)

miscued. this is comp 106f. but he does play 'you go to my head' on this record.

Whatever happened to Toni Braxton? Yeah, I know I could Google it, but sometimes I'd rather lean on the WFMU Collective's knowledge.

I like to do the same thing, Hud II. Unfortunately, I don't know how much info the WFMU Collective would tend to have on Toni Braxton...although I'm consistently surprised by how much this crowd knows.

what about Tony, Toni, Tone?

Wiki on recent Toni Braxton events: "Braxton was involved in the 7th season of the reality show Dancing with the Stars. Her professional partner was Alec Mazo. She was voted off in week five of the competition. It was announced on October 6, 2010 that Braxton once again had filed for bankruptcy. A reality series entitled Braxton Family Values, starring Toni and her sisters, debuted April 12, 2011 on WE tv. WE tv ordered a 13-episode second season of the show after the third episode of the first season. On September 18, 2011, Braxton was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame."

@DJ KG: Btw, glad your summer schedule remains the same. Here's the deal on my mistake w/ a June Friday the 13th: I wasn't looking at a calendar when I wrote that comment last week. I was recalling something said or typed from your show early in the year when you mentioned 3 Friday the 13ths upcoming, and I seriously remember it as Jan., April and June at that time. So the third one is actually next month. Glad I straightened that out. :)

Good Friday afternoon, KG and everyone.

  4:34pm
Carmichael:

I wanted to get here on time, but I'm in government and it's fiscal year end. No time to breathe, much less hear.
  4:35pm
kat330:

As a fill-in one time, Kurt, are you sorry to see A440 go? Have you ever considered hosting a show devoted to classical music? When I saw the replacement was Minor Music and before I learned differently, I was hoping it was all music played in a minor key -- like Young is doing on his Americana.
Avatar 4:37pm
DJ KG:

for the record, i did bethany's show twice but that's neither here nor there. i loved doing her show, but personally wouldn't want to do a show that's any one genre.
Avatar 4:37pm
DJ KG:

jesse's a great guy, though! i'm looking forward to listening to minor music.
  4:37pm
northguineahills:

Damn, this sizzles (Bowie)
  4:39pm
Carmichael:

Interesting, as I was about to say you seem to be giving over your show to jazz this afternoon. And that's fine, but I always expect FMU to morph in and out of genres (as only it can).
  4:40pm
kat330:

(Oops.) I can understand that, but it was only one hour. The all-minor-key music intrigues me, and it certainly can cross all genres. Since a wee one, I've leaned toward minor over major. Innate melancholia I presume.
Avatar 4:41pm
DJ KG:

carmichael, that's certainly true. getting to interview leo smith struck close to my heart and i had to play some aacm. like ... a lot of it. but we're moving toward other pastures now.
Avatar 4:42pm

also - the freedom to play lots of genres is the same freedom as the freedom to just play one.

Dead Corporate Eyes:

innate melancholia...I love it!

I know that buckram is stiff fabric (i.e., a bookcover), but I first thought this song may be an homage to Buck Ram, the 60s pop producer. I'm thinking way too much ....

  5:06pm
G:

Not all minor key music is sad. Some is just somber or solemn etc.
  5:08pm
northguineahills:

Didn't Wadada Leo Smith add Ishmael to his name recently?
  5:09pm
kat330:

True dat, G. I recall my mother sort of chiding me as a child for liking so many things in minor key and not being so enthusiastic with Sousa march music.
Avatar 5:12pm
DJ KG:

ngh - i don't want to speak to much for the man, but i believe he made a choice to use 'ishmael' in his personal life but not as a performer.
Avatar 5:13pm
DJ KG:

i quite like the woody guthrie verse 'way off yonder in a minor key' that billy bragg and wilco did, on mermaid ave. vol. 2, i believe
  5:14pm
Matt:

Wow - this is really nice, too.
  5:14pm
kat330:

Yeah, yeah, good reference, great lyric.
  5:18pm
sue:

Thought I heard my baby crying upstairs. No. Just this song.
  5:19pm
kat330:

I think melancholia being associated with minor key is just a way for the majors to keep down the minors, as it is in general. But it's the wonderful interplay of both in a composition that always brings me the greatest happiness.
"I Know Something About Love" was an early song where I learned how the switch-up affected me.
  5:22pm
Carmichael:

It's an easy way to describe the feelings found in some minor key songs, although not accurate at all in my opinion. Take an obvious example, Sultans of Swing. Played in Dm, it's not sad, somber or brooding at all. It's uptempo and driving, especially the solo back end. That's more of how I associate moods with minors.
  5:23pm
kat330:

I suppose uroborus was already taken as a domain name.
Avatar 5:25pm
DJ KG:

well, the minor key does come from the same flattened third that defines the blues, as mentioned in the interview earlier. it's not _always_ melancholy, but the dropping (or bending) a note as in a wail of sadness is common in the music of many different cultures.
  5:26pm
kat330:

Right, Carm, and like G pointed out, minor can connote serious or somber, like the majesty of Profofiev's minor-key themes in Romeo and Juliet.
  5:28pm
kat330:

Gravitas.
Kurt, Mom didn't understand why her baby girl loved the blues so much either. :)
  5:30pm
kat330:

Vying outside against this lovely Shaheen piece is an ice cream truck playing Turkey in the Straw. Now why don't those trucks ever play minor-key tunes?
  5:32pm
slugluv1313:

ahhhhh Shaheen :)
  5:34pm
kat330:

I see the typo disease is still very much with me. I've even boosted the size of the comments field to help with what went on yesterday. My eyes, sigh. ProKofiev, of course...
  5:35pm
slugluv1313:

AND this lovely Bahar Movahed piece (MUST get my own copy of this album!!!) -- SUBLIME!!! thank you Mr. Kurt Gottschalk!!!
  5:38pm
kat330:

@slugluv1313: I believe the FMU home page graphic fits your comment perfectly: Sublime. :)
  5:39pm
slugluv1313:

oh no, kat330!!! i have über case of typo disease -- had hoped no-one else was afflicted so -- i BANISH yours, FOREVERMORE!
  5:39pm
kat330:

I like how Marvin is moving to this track.
  5:40pm
slugluv1313:

@ kat330 -- omg i had not even seen that -- WOW!!!! just fit the mood/music PERFECTLY!!! :)
  5:41pm
vanya:

yeah, marvin is totally in it!
  5:41pm
kat330:

Mine is eyesight issues and thinking faster than my fingers can move. The latter's always been the case, but at least my eyes used to catch them all before putting it out there. I was omitting entire words yesterday. It was a mess.
  5:41pm
adam:

YEAH!
  5:43pm
kat330:

I was trying to quickly search to see if Young's Americana includes a minor-key version of Turkey in the Straw but wasn't able to confirm. Anyone know offhand?
  5:47pm
kat330:

Found it. Nope, no Turkey in the list.
  5:56pm
kat330:

Well, leaving to get dinner prep underway. Thanks, Mr. Gottschalk, for a most sonorous (not snore-ous :) afternoon! Later all.
