Good to have you here Duane! Today's food for thought: Apparently even Shakespeare stooped to the maternal insult.. from Titus Adronicus: Demetrius: "Villain, what hast thou done?" Aaron: "That which thou canst not undo." Chiron: "Thou hast undone our mother." Aaron: "Villain, I have done thy mother."

Caryn:
The matinee of "Titus Andronicus" is still one of the best theatre stories to think about. A bunch of pensioners near the front, obviously most of them there because, well, it's Shakespeare so it's high-class theatre and it's not going to be "like the filth on tv". Only "Titus Andronicus" is full of mutilation, murder, rape and cannibalism. And this version is particularly splattery. Once those old ladies in the front row had had quite a liberal amount of fake blood splattered on them, I think they realised their choice of play had gone awry.
|
Wed. 5/30/12 12:33pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:
Titus Andronicus is Shakespeare's first tragedy, and he wasn't it's sole author, he most likely wrote it in collaboration with George Peel...

I think all HS students should just get a copy of "Shakespeare's Bawdy". It lists and explains all the dirty jokes in Shakespeare. Might make kids more interested in learning their Shakespeare.

Speaking of plays there is a Dennis Potter play currently on in London called Brimstone and Treacle which involves the rape by a carer of a mute paralysed woman who then resumes consciousness. Folks have gotten upset.. but fail to realise that Sleeping Beauty is based off an earlier medieval play called Sun, Moon & Talia which involves a woman falling into a deep sleep to not be kissed awake but rather raped by the king after which she became pregnant and gave birth to twins while still asleep (sun & moon) and one of them seeking the mothers breast ended up sucking the poisoned splinter from her finger... they're stories people! I mean folks eat each others faces nowadays.. reality is by far more horrific sometimes.

I rode up in the elevator with Sting. He seemed snooty. Also paranoid as to why I was going to the same floor as him. "I work there, man"
|
Wed. 5/30/12 1:05pm
Jeremy Shatan:
Sting ain't a bad actor. He was also in a Mike Figgis movie called Stormy Monday with Melanie Griffith & Tommy Lee Jones. Good flick.
|
Wed. 5/30/12 1:07pm
Denise in DC:
Something with Melanie Griffith in it was good?

Don't hate, Denise - you've never seen Working Girl? Terrific.

Duane:
She was married to him at age 16 or something like that

Wed. 5/30/12 1:09pm
Gert:
And who was Melanie Griffith's mom? Dad was Andy, I think.
|
Wed. 5/30/12 1:11pm
Jeremy Shatan:
Mom was Tippi Hedren. Dad was Peter Griffith, not an actor. Another great one was Something Wild. Play that Sister Carol cut, Duane!
|
Wed. 5/30/12 1:11pm
Denise in DC:
I don't think Dad was Andy, but Mom was Tippi Hedren.

Speaking of fairy tales, I'd recommend Neil Gaiman's version of Snow White to everyone. Interesting version, and coincides with Nathan's Sleeping Beauty story, as it imagines Snow White as a vampire, who is unfortunately revived by a necrophiliac prince. You can read it here: http://www.holycow.com/dreaming/stories/snow-glass-apples/ @Jeremy: "Stormy Monday" is indeed a fine movie. Didn't Sean Bean die in it like he dies in every frigging movie and tv show?
|
Wed. 5/30/12 1:17pm

all this fairy tale talk is reminding me of angela carter. her stories are great, too.

The Birds destroyed my mind as a kid and I dissolved into raw fear. Shortly thereafter, I was on the roof of my elementary school retrieving a tennis ball. There was a nesting nighthawk there that chased me as it swooped and screeched. I entered into a state of bald panic and nearly lept to certain injury, but at the last minute I collected myself and shinnied down a metal pole to safety.

Caryn:
Woohoo, "Night Moves". I also think Melanie is probably the only good thing about "Bonfire of the Vanities", because she captures the tone the movie is going for way better than any of the other actors do. Too bad everything else about the film is kinda crap.

Incidentally, the NYT had a nice round-up of different reimaginings of Snow White. It's not all-inclusive, but it does have examples of most of the archetypes: http://www.vulture.com/2012/03/from-vampire-to-sex-slave-the-many-incarnations-of-snow-white.html?mid=facebook_vulture
