Listener comments!

  Wed. 5/23/12 3:01pm rrg:

It's time, it's time, it's time. And about time, too.
Wed. 5/23/12 3:03pm New Facebook Slogan:

Get in on tomorrow's MySpace, today!
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:04pm rrg:

I should listen with headphones all the time. We all should.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:05pm kat330:

Poppentheater, yeah!
Wed. 5/23/12 3:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Irwin and fellow Irwinistas:
I'm running off to a doctor's appointment, and hopefully finish my gardening afterwards. May not be on the comments but will tune in on my iPad later.

Please act accordingly, as if I'm looking over your shoulders...
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:06pm rrg:

Is that two pianos or three?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:06pm rrg:

Thank god HE's gone...
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:07pm G:

Now, now :)
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:07pm kat330:

Aw, Matt, and we haven't properly traded comments in a long while. [pouts] But I hope the doc gives you only good news!
Wed. 5/23/12 3:08pm Denise in DC:

Be careful what you say about Zuckerberg. He may still own us all someday.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:09pm kat330:

@Desnise: Yeah, and how with a direct connection to China, we should all be concerned about the coming dynasty. Myself, I'm still a FB refuser.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:09pm Docs:

If we always gave only good news, no one would bother coming. Not a good business plan.

But Matt looks extremely healthy.
Wed. 5/23/12 3:09pm the glowing one:

from PF's best album
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:09pm kat330:

[sorry about the typo, Denise]
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:10pm tinaun:

@the glowing one

agreed
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:11pm rrg:

The picture puts me in mind of Lotte Reiniger.
Wed. 5/23/12 3:12pm Denise in DC:

No worries, Kat.

Me, I'm constantly on FB, which probably means I'm pouring money into Zuckerberg's pocket.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:12pm kat330:

@Docs Au contraire, I imagine if you ONLY gave good news, far more people would darken your door than currently do.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:13pm tinaun:

ah, high school
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:13pm G:

I was on facebook in fall 2004, when it was a university thing. Never used my real name, and still don't. But you have to use some kind of name to have an account, and people do ask you to be on there to see this and that...

I just don't get why I would want my relatives and friends and colleagues etc. to all know all about each other. What's the upside on that. I may as well invite the whole bunch to a party and spike the punch with sodium pentathol. That would work out well, I'm sure.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:14pm patient:

Exactly how much lime, doctor? And it should go directly into the actual coconut?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:15pm AM Listener:

As Irwin likely knows, a certain nationwide conservative female talk show host uses this song as end-of-hour bumper music.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:15pm kat330:

@G: What ARE you hiding from anyway? All this anonymity....hmmm.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:16pm Irwin:

@AM: who dat? Laura? Monica?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:16pm kat330:

Just was referencing this Young work over on Nazario Scenario.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:17pm G:

@kat: Do I want my students kinowing my relatives? My relatives knowing my friends? Etc. etc. Insanely impractical oversharing.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:17pm Caryn:

Clementine having boxes for shoes makes me think she was some kind of Howard Hughes-ian figure.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:18pm Lizardner Dave:

Clementines are overrated. Regular ol' Oranges are so much better.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:18pm kat330:

Oh, I get the FB anonymity, even if I don't get the FB dealio whatsoever. But you're also rather anonymous as G.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:18pm AM Listener:

I believe Ingraham?? She hasn't been on WABC since about 2008, so my memory is vague now. She may have dropped it since then. But that was the first place I heard that Weezer tune.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:19pm Woo:

This is the best Neil album in years. That's what I think.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:21pm kat330:

Hey, Caryn! Welp, hunaja Philo's back from Finland now. Missed a chance to meet, bummer.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:22pm rrg:

All right, what's THIS talkover music then?

I'm listening in headphones (did I mention?) so I can't use Soundhound or Shazam to identify it. But they probably couldn't anyway.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:23pm Mike East:

I never had a Facebook and I never will. If 1 in 8 people in the world are on Facebook, that means I'm still in the majority, right?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:25pm kat330:

@Mike: I'll remain off FB even when it tips into the minority. Too much like high school, a time I couldn't wait to end.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:25pm G:

I chose G (my first initial) when I started commenting here maybe 2008ish. Again, I was worried that if I said enough over time, either here, or about FMU to people I know, I would end up being very spottable. A single letter is also hard to search for, because it's not very distinctive in the ever-accumulating midden of e-data. . :-)

Several years of pseudonymous livejournaling in the early 00s meant I had thought this through long before FB or FMU comments. And I'd seen messy situations where people were cavalier about what they said online, forever archived, that could and did cause them trouble later on... A lot of my professional connections were built online in the 90s, so I saw how things really went fairly early on in the WWW era...
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:25pm Irwin:

@rrg: "Party Animal" (looped) by Luke Vibert & BJ Cole
Wed. 5/23/12 3:25pm the glowing one:

mmh, dat voice
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:26pm G:

Gotta drive, BBL... (I'm in the car)
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:28pm kat330:

@G: Clearly thought through very well. I'm careful enough what I reveal and say to the extent I'll happily own up to anything and everything. There are plenty of comments I've started and then removed before posting.
Wed. 5/23/12 3:28pm the glowing one:

is that a new Primitives album?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:29pm Mike East:

@kat - you hit it on the nose. Staying off of FB kept me off the list of people who were invited to my HS reunion.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:29pm kat330:

Be careful, G!
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:29pm rrg:

I know the answer to that. Yes!
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:29pm Lizardner Dave:

WFMU is also just like high school but it's a tyranny of hipsters and nerds passing judgement rather than jocks and pretty girls.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:30pm rrg:

WFMU, or WFMU listeners?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:30pm tinaun:

interesting song. is this new?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:31pm Irwin:

@LD: "Like!"
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:31pm kat330:

@LD: A lot of truth in what you say, yep. But there are nooks LESS like HS than others around here. I try to find those.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:31pm Caryn:

@kat: yeah, dead broke, so I knew I couldn't get together :(
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:32pm Lizardner Dave:

I was just going for a home page blurb there.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:32pm kat330:

Have you heard more about that job?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:32pm yayson:

my favorite part of the show each week is when irwin starts explaining how crummy ken and andy's show is going to be that evening
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:33pm Lizardner Dave:

@kat: I like breakfast nooks and nooks and crannies on my English muffins. Mmmmm.....butter.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:34pm kat330:

Philo brought back a lovely hunk of smoked salmon, his fave rye breads and something I greatly dislike: your licorice candy that sounds like "salmiaki"?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:36pm Woo:

If the FMU search function is working properly, Irwin has not played Buddy Greco since last August. Well?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:36pm kat330:

Better nooks than cliques.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:36pm Caryn:

@kat: nope, should hear by the end of the month, but that is rapidly approaching...
Yep, salmiakki. I don't like it particularly (though there are a couple of brands that are less bitter and which I'm fine with), it's like Danish "salty licorice".

Just yesterday, I read some news story about FB users by country. Apparently, 86 % of Swedish people have a FB account.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:37pm rrg:

Oh, how nice to hear this. Would anyone but Irwin play it?
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:37pm rrg:

There's a nice cover of this by Fotheringay as well.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:38pm Dave B:

Iceland has a good salty licorice too...

Greetings people.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:38pm kat330:

@rrg: I think a couple others might. :) Mary was a local Lullville gal.
Wed. 5/23/12 3:39pm Denise in DC:

I think I still have this PPM album in vinyl.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:39pm Irwin:

@rrg: I have the Fotheringay CD w/me today, wouldn'tcha know.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:39pm kat330:

@Caryn: To reinforce, good luck on that job! }}}}}}}}}}}}

  Wed. 5/23/12 3:44pm Pretty Girls:

@Lizardner Dave: We can be outsiders, too, ya know, and plenty of "mean girls" to make HS a major drag.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:45pm rrg:

I have some of that chili-infused chocolate here. Have not yet popped it in my mouth. But I will.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:48pm kat330:

@Denise: I know that I DID have it, but a lot of my vinyl "disappeared" when I put it in storage in my boyfriend's basement while we hitched around Europe.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:50pm kat330:

I like this.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:52pm Woo:

I had a big chunk of vinyl ripped off in storage too. I replaced a lot of it but am still missing God Bless Tiny Tim. A distant relative did the deed. He was a crackhead, claims to not remember. How can you not remember lifting a bunch of records? They're really heavy.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:52pm kat330:

Somehow makes me think of Chris Whitley at moments.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:53pm Dave B:

nice. me likee Galactic.
Wed. 5/23/12 3:54pm rarus avis (left coast):

me no loose vinyl, but stored it in a place that should have been cool, but was very warm and wet. green fuzz growing. the smell made the cat puke.
  Wed. 5/23/12 3:55pm kat330:

Yes, this is fine, too.
@rrg: Oh, right, Irwin-prescribed chocolate time. I hope Matt was getting enough chocolate.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:02pm rarus avis (left coast):

thank you, Irwin, for the Ming/Billy. :) My favorite still is "Major Dog - Be Nice To Cats" though I haven't heard Dung Beetle Rolls Again in its completeness.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:06pm rrg:

G is right, you know. It should really be "rara avis".
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:06pm Michael:

Thanks for the Primitives - a preview for me I reckon. She sounds in fine voice as you mentioned.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:08pm rrg:

Are ALL these Ivana XL tracks available for free download?

I ask without having looked.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:09pm Irwin:

Seeke, and ye shall fynde
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:10pm rrg:

Yes, I really like the new Primitives album also. I'll have to get it. Fuel my Anglophilia. Because, you know, I'm an Anglophile.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:10pm Denise in DC:

I've lost a lot of vinyl over the years meself, but still have a good-sized collection. Was trying to digitize it using one of those DIY turntable contraptions, but the sound turned out lousy. And when you're trying to capture the full experience of a tap-dancing Liberace, that's a problem.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:11pm Dagwood:

Vinyl Alert! to FMU friends.
I just visited a nice man in Beacon NY who is trying to unload 100's of records, before he moves to Ecuador in two days. FREE. Mostly classical but all tastes mixed in. See ad in Hudson Valley Craigslist under "Free" for location.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:11pm kat330:

Irwin, who is the Old Codger anyway?
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:12pm rrg:

I recommend that you send your vinyl to reclaimmedia.com. They do a great job at a great price.

It's only expensive if you value your own time very little.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:12pm rrg:

Hat and Feet. This time I know.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:12pm kat330:

@Denise: Oh, that's really good to know since we've been talking about doing just that same thing.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:13pm rarus avis (left coast):

@rgg: ya you're prolly correct about that. i'm not sure that i care that much, though. thanks for the tip.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:13pm fred:

@kat: the only station personality who is not younger than Irwin
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:14pm kat330:

THAT doesn't help. :) Really no other name used or that can be revealed?
Wed. 5/23/12 4:15pm Denise in DC:

rrg, reclaimmedia will digitize vinyl? Good to know. Thanks.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:15pm Michael:

You could call him. His phone number is 6. He is old.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:17pm rrg:

@Denise: yes, I've used them for a bunch of stuff. A group of friends and I did it collectively a few years ago.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:18pm rrg:

He's the only WFMU DJ who gives out his phone number on the air. He's had the same number since 1892.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:18pm kat330:

@rrg: Say, thanks for the tip. Weren't you concerned about your shipment being lost? I ask because we have a pretty lousy record, ahem, with USPS and some other delivery companies as well.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:19pm kat330:

Oh, you keeedz!
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:19pm fred:

@kat: "A cranky, pathetic fool, and a negative radio role model. Listen, learn, avoid."
Not to be confused with "a tedious ideologue with a hustle."
source: http://wfmu.org/irwin/
look under "radio"
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:19pm Caryn:

@kat: BTW, did PG take part in Restaurant Day while he was over here?
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:21pm Droll:

I've been digitizing my old cassettes and MiniDiscs and throwing away boxes and boxes old plasticware (long overdue). I started going through my LPs to do the same, but there was a sense of attachment to the LPs I don't get with CD, MD, or CS, so I kept them.
I also realized a lifetime of buying "obscure" LPs eventually turns into a collection of "Rarities".
Wed. 5/23/12 4:21pm Denise in DC:

@Kat, the reclaimmedia site mentions one of the problems I encountered myself while trying to digitize my vinyl: unless you sit and nurse the process yourself (or, apparently, buy some special software), each side of a vinyl LP ends up as one long MP3 track. It's a pain in the ass.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:23pm kat330:

@fred: Related to Thomas Alva I presume?

@Caryn: No, I don't think so. I doubt his family gave him the opportunity since he complained in email about how much he was being forcefed by his stepmom. :)
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:24pm rrg:

@kat330: When I did it they sent boxes with more than enough padding to make breakage unlikely. I think now they just advise taking your records to UPS, who really will pack it very well (it's their business, after all).

Though it's impossible to guarantee anything like this, I wasn't too worried.

They'll do audio cassettes as well if you have them (but not 78s).
Wed. 5/23/12 4:24pm rareASS avis (left coast):

@Denise in DC - you're so correct. i digitize lots of vinyl, and it's painstaking and requires a lot of attention to detail (noise reduction process mostly - especially for really badly thrashed records).
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:24pm Irwin:

I want to commend you all for taking up the comments slack in the temporary absence of Matt from Springfield.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:25pm rrg:

Thank god HE'S not here.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:26pm kat330:

We're eating our chocolate, Irwin.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:26pm kat330:

Yes, the Smithy of Sex! Got to see live in Louisville several years ago.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:27pm rrg:

Reclaimmedia will give you regular CDs (i.e. lossless) as well, if you want that (which I do). Getting both mp3s and full CDs costs only a little more.

They scan the cover art, and everything is properly tagged.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:28pm fred:

@kat: I think he was the uncredited inspiration. From Edison's records, he seems like a bully who got that phone number out of a weird and unsuccessful attempt at payback
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:29pm kat330:

Well, the problem of vinyl transference needs a bit of time, I think. I've discovered if I'm patient, somebody will come up with improved tech to take care of current issues.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:30pm Denise in DC:

What's up with Matt anyway? He actually planned to spend some time OUTSIDE.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:31pm Denise in DC:

And speaking of Fotheringay . . .
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:31pm rrg:

Sandy Denny! Back when she was alive.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:33pm Stan Laurel:

Well, I should certainly hope so.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:33pm rrg:

There's a cover of a Gordon Lightfoot song ("The Way I Feel") on this Fotheringay album that I've always found shiveringly beautiful.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:34pm Carmichael:

And I'm back INSIDE, listening to Sandy & reading y'all's jibber jabber. Hi everyone!
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:38pm rrg:

I want that list.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:39pm Denise in DC:

"Mrs. Robinson" actually starts with "Dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee."
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:40pm popo:

I thought Nick the Bard was one of Irwin's personalities. No?
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:43pm Caryn:

Think I'll go make some tea.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:44pm Denise in DC:

I love Blossom Dearie so much.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:45pm kat330:

Caryn, PG just came in and back out. He said that, unfortunately, he found out about Restaurant Day too late.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:47pm Fredericks:

I played one of Irwin's Harry Partch records at a John Cage exhibit last month. Wonderful experience. I paired it with T.S. Elliot and Bucky Fuller.

Ginger green for me Caryn.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:48pm Denise in DC:

Tea is a good idea. Going for Earl Grey Green.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:48pm kat330:

@Carm: You gardening as well? Surprised to hear Matt gardens. I can report our tomatoes -- the ones not chomped by some graceless grackles -- are looking lovely. And lots of good lettuce, radishes and green onions, too.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:50pm Caryn:

Peppermint tea brewing.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:53pm G:

Could Matt be having a hip replacement? You can't ever be *too* hip around here. Well, maybe that's a hip augmentation.
Wed. 5/23/12 4:53pm Denise in DC:

It's pouring rain in downtown DC right now, complete with rather-scary lightning. I suspect Matt's not out in his garden at the moment.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:54pm Carmichael:

Although I live in the agricultural powerhouse of the US, I don't garden. And talking about your tomatoes is a distinctly Sacramento trait. The Contadina tomato paste plant is just down the road, and every turnoff is covered in tomatoes from the trucks.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:56pm kat330:

Talking about tomatoes is s backyard gardeners trait all around.
@G & Denise: So was "gardening" some euphemism? For a hip replacement? Rose hip tea, mmmm, gotta tie into a bow.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:57pm Droll:

G, More likely Matt has Carpal Tunnel Syndrome than a broken funny bone.
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:57pm Irwin:

Matt's coming back soon. I've deleted all the nasty comments listeners posted about him. You people should be ASHAMED of yourselves! I had no idea my listeners were so vicious! And snide! And sarcastic! And envious of Matt's gracious manners!!!
  Wed. 5/23/12 4:58pm G:

Which reminds me. Was visiting the 'rents a couple hundred miles south of NYC this past weekend. Picked up some retirement community humor.

A couple in their 80s go to the doctor and sit in a crowded waiting room. The wife gets called first. The doctor examines her and says cheerfully, "You're in great shape! Would you mind telling me: Do you still have intercourse?"

She looks a little confused, then gets up and walks out of the examining room, and calls down the hall:

"HARRY! DO WE STILL HAVE INTERCOURSE???"

He yells back from the waiting room:

"IF I'VE TOLD YOU ONCE, I'VE TOLD YOU A THOUSAND TIMES! WE. HAVE. BLUE. CROSS."
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:00pm kat330:

Heh! Matt, will be sorry to have missed that one, G.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:02pm kat330:

Looking back at Matt's first comment up there, maybe by "gardening" he meant "manscaping," and maybe the "Doctor" was a health spa.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:04pm Parq:

Is that with custard pies or seltzer bottles?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:04pm Joke Time:

So. A liberal, a moderate, and a conservative walk into a bar. Bartender says "Hi, Mitt."
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:04pm Droll:

Kat, I really didn't need that image. Irwin, be sure to nix that comment too. Thanks.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:06pm Irwin:

I'm going to delete ALL comments for today. Then won't Matt be surprised!!!
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:07pm Caryn:

Yeah, he'll think that we were so distraught because of his absense that we couldn't comment at all.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:07pm kat330:

That's a great idea! He will freak out.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:08pm kat330:

Matt got our tongue, ayep. Do it, 'win!
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:08pm Caryn:

Irwin, you have to leave the first couple of comments until Matt's! Then: delete the rest.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:11pm G:

Or just hide all those comments, give us a password, and don't tell Matt anything about it at all. Then, next week, we can refer back to today's comments and *really* mindfuck him.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:12pm kat330:

You can always sweep them up into an email to send him some hours after the fact. But if you comply with the plan, then we'll all have to keep absolutely mum on the 7SD list, et al.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:13pm G:

No Rick Wakeman moog in the demo, I'm guessing...
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:13pm G:

Yep, hammond maybe
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:14pm rolf:

i just saw breakin bad episode 1. i'm shocked.
Wed. 5/23/12 5:14pm Denise in DC:

It's pretty cool, isn't it, Rolf?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:15pm G:

and recorder?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:15pm kat330:

@rolf: If you're not talking about the first 3-4 seasons, please, spoiler alert for those of us who wait to buy seasons on DVD? Thanks!
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:15pm Carmichael:

Malcom's dad went a little bit dark, didn't he?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:15pm rolf:

i'm not sure, denise in dc
Wed. 5/23/12 5:16pm Matt from Springfield:

And...I return, more or less on schedule.

Nasty comments! I could sense every one of em! Disgusting, mean, perverted scrawlings about me!
Carry on.
Wed. 5/23/12 5:16pm Denise in DC:

Hey, did this song actually precede Kubrick's Space Odyssey?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:16pm kat330:

I knew Cranston was a helluva dramatic actor when first seeing him in Malcolm.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:17pm kat330:

Aw shucks. Curses, foiled again!
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:17pm G:

Clean health of bill, Matt?
Wed. 5/23/12 5:17pm Denise in DC:

You have mixed feelings about it, Rolf?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:17pm kat330:

So, Matt, how does your "garden" grow?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:20pm rolf:

yes, first i laughed my ass off, then i thought-this is the end of the underground culture
Wed. 5/23/12 5:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Actually I was treated for a rash on my leg that appears to have been from unnoticed poison ivy or sumac I walked in. I did get prescription steroids though! Who wants some?! C'mon, man up and abuse prescriptions! Ignore those after school specials!
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:21pm G:

@Deanise: wikipedia saith: ""Space Oddity" is a song written and performed by David Bowie and released as a music single in 1969. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut; its title alludes to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, released the previous year."
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:22pm Peanut Gallery:

Ohhh, soily!
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:23pm kat330:

Ouch, yeah, poison ivy and oak are rampant around here. JT (PG, whatever!) has had the same rash problem when landscaping -- LANDscaping I said. But just applies some over-the-counter cortisone.
Wed. 5/23/12 5:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@G yes, I should be doing fine now.
@kat I planted tomatoes because I always do (L U V LUV!! Fresh tomatoes!), some flowers and bushes this year but mainly herbs.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:24pm G:

The locked groove remix :-)
Wed. 5/23/12 5:25pm Denise in DC:

@G, the Deram Anthology supposedly covers the years 1966 through 1968, and includes a demo of "Space Oddity." So the fact that the song was introduced as a single in 1969 doesn't necessarily mean the film was released before the song was.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:26pm kat330:

G, good to see I'm not the only one having trouble with typing Denise. Nearly every time I've had to correct, if I see it in time. My typing problem today is "uneven tips:" My left hand has nails clipped all the way down (for better fretting), and my right hand actually has some long nails for once.
Wed. 5/23/12 5:26pm Matt from Springfield:

I think there should be a whole album of Klaus locked-groove remixes! :)
Wed. 5/23/12 5:26pm Denise in DC:

Okay, off to see the therapist. Bye all. Have a great day.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:27pm kat330:

Bye, Denise!
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:30pm G:

Gosh, wikipedia is never wrong (add lol's etc here). I'd say it would require further research. But "space odyssey" was not a well known phrase prior to the movie, so the most likely guess, without more solid evidence at present, would be an ambitious songwriter might have decided to play off something that had made a splash. Wikipedia says Phillips, the label Bowie had after Deram, didn't want to release it on the grounds of being gimmicky, but then went ahead, smelling the lure of the moon landing tie-in. The single was released during the first moon landing mission.

YOTEL - http://www.yotel.com/~/media/Images/Carousel%20Images/NY_external%20facade.ashx
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:31pm Barney:

I found my eyes assaulted by that very Yotel sign walking up 42nd this morning.
Wed. 5/23/12 5:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Now I shall return to my garden myself. But I'll keep listening thru the iPad I'm holding now.

Bye again everybody!! Keep dreaming, and keep streaming!
(tuning in is okay for the broadcast listeners.)
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:36pm kat330:

Sing to those tomatoes and herbs, Matt -- they love it!
Wed. 5/23/12 5:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Will do, kat! :)
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:39pm Caryn:

Of course, since the demos range from 1966 to 1968, Bowie might have seen the film in 1968, instantly be inspired to write a track, and then release the single the following year. That way, the timeline would still make sense.

headline on Yahoo! Finance:
Short Sellers Lining up to Bet Against Facebook
(Reuters)
Short sellers desperate to bet against Facebook shortly after its debut on public markets are now getting their chance.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:41pm kat330:

Weighing in on the timeline debate, I agree with G that it seems too much of a synchronicity and that the song title had to succeed the movie title.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:42pm Schadenfreude:

I knew I'd get that Zuckerpunk sooner or later :) He also got married. Bad luck is really kicking in :)
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:45pm kat330:

And I don't know why Deram found the title "too gimmicky." Like that Tyner track demonstrates, jazz artists are famous for using wordplay, homophonic puns and turns of phrase.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:46pm Droll:

What's the matter with those traders shorting Faceplant? Don't they miss high school? And why does every conversation about FB also include HS?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:48pm kat330:

Ah, Noel, you'd be so easy to love. :)
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:48pm G:

@kat: Maybe they thought it was morbid or could boomerang, because if someone really got marooned and died during an Apollo mission, the label would get mucho bad flak.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:49pm G:

So during Apollo 11, greed won out over fear :-)
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:49pm kat330:

Clemency even for Klaus. Hunaja huns.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:51pm kat330:

Well, fear's not the same thing as "gimmicky." And, yes, greed wins out over the majority of considerations and reservations.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:52pm kat330:

Hence FB.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:54pm Lizardner Dave:

I sold my shorts to a nice man who gave me candy when I was a kid. What.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:54pm G:

Companies/executives often state one reason for something when analysis shows the real reason is something else. But again, you'd have to interview the people who knew the emmes at the time, and (as in 1968/69?) they might figure something other than the truth would make them look better...
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:56pm kat330:

Great gravel groove.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:57pm kat330:

@LD: Licorice candy?
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:58pm Lizardner Dave:

Salty licorice candy.
  Wed. 5/23/12 5:59pm kat330:

Well, ending where we started -- oiva!
  Wed. 5/23/12 6:00pm G:

licorice is an old pronunciation of lecherous, so why not...
