Favoriting Bill Zurat: Playlist from May 1, 2012 Favoriting

Some pop, fumbling musicians, bedroom recordings, vocal harmonies with orchestras, elongated notes, tape hiss, one-chord wonders, analog synths + clicking drum machines, loners, breezy country, and brief cacophonous interruptions.

Listener comments!

  3:01pm
G:

Ut oh, is Robin still with us? Haven't been checking the news this afetrnoon...
  3:02pm
Jeff:

The Zurat is back, after too long a hiatus.
  3:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Without BT, what will we do? Let's see...BT, BU, BV, BW, BX, BY...BZ!! But of course!

Glad to listen to you again Mr. Zurat! Very nice Bee Gees song, up to their standard.
  3:04pm
Joe B:

G, check your calendar for the connection!
  3:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

which Walker brother is this?
  3:04pm
Bill F.:

Bill Z, Bill F. here. What a nice treat to see you here today.
  3:04pm
fred:

@Jeff: my thoughts exactly. Then I checked the earlier playlists, I couldn't believe how long it had been
  3:04pm
G:

I just chekced his past playlists and he does one and only one show per year for the past four years, all Turner fill-ins between May and September. -- Coincidence? Contractual obligation? A badly-timed lost hand of poker? You be the judge...
  3:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: Robin's still around to date--it's just an occasion to play the "First of May" song.
  3:08pm
G:

De Natura Sonoris = "On the Nature of Sound" (Latin)
  3:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Now, imagine: a horror movie to go along with this as a "soundtrack"...
  3:10pm
BSI:

It would be great to swap really visceral Penderecki stuff for a biblical epic film..... or better yet, MILO & OTIS....
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BSI: You could easily use the grand vistas in the cinematography of epic films, and swap out the score for Penderecki--change the feel from uplifting to uneasy and scary.
  3:27pm
bryce:

hey, beezy!
  3:28pm
bz:

right up yr alley bryce lol
  3:32pm
G:

Does that mean we should discuss thai food now?
  3:34pm
BSI:

Any form of curry is spoken here. Do carry on.
  3:34pm
northguineahills:

Dropped in time for Bardo Pond. Good timing.
  3:35pm
dc pat:

channa masala
  3:36pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

take a dive in the trippy waters of the bardo pond! come on, the water's...screaming...
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Pad khing is a good Thai dish--stir fry with ginger and wild mushrooms.

Lovin' the Bardo Pond as well!
  3:39pm
kat330:

Zigzag up the alley through the casbah to the ZiggURAT?
  3:39pm
Jeff:

Brian Turner's European Vacation - didin't I catch that movie late one night on cable?
  3:41pm
pgw in mntclr:

years ago, i saw bardo pond open for velocity girl in philly. the vg fans who enjoyed their melodic side and the vg fans who liked their feedback could easily be picked out in the crowd from afar.
  3:44pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I think I saw them open for Jonestown in maybe '02...my wife hated them, but I got lost in their haze.
  3:45pm
cpt bang:

@BZ I take much inspiration from everything that you do!!
  3:45pm
northguineahills:

I saw Bardo Pond on that some tour in FL, around '95ish. They have since got less linear and even more psychedelic.
  3:46pm
Chris from DC:

Never less than great live.

Whoa, East of Eden, nice.
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: Lines, pfft.
Never heard of East of Eden before, they rock! (A geographic projection album title definitely helps with me as well)
  3:50pm
cpt bang:

I love this Real Player stream, but I am really excited that you guys have a flash stream now
  3:53pm
pgw in mntclr:

i just tried listening to both at the same time. frippertronic-esque.
  3:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mix reality and fantasy---that's what metal comes down to!

Also to this bezerk guitar fadeout solo.
  3:55pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

love it--simple and effective.
  3:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Archives shout-out! Excellent!!
  3:57pm
Mussorgsky:

This piece turned out to be so very adaptable electronically!!!!!!!!!!
  3:58pm
BSI:

Don't be so modest.
  3:58pm
BSI:

...too easy?
  3:59pm
Carmichael:

Good afternoon Mr. Zurat and listeners.
  4:04pm
Cheri Pi:

Oh yes, the cocaine song!
  4:05pm
A Big Turkey:

Zurat backwards is Taruz. In Turkish, Taarruz is Attack. It's an Eclectic Set Attack!!!!
  4:05pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

wow, this is a blast from the past. how I hate cliches, but...
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Zurattack!!
@DCE: If I haven't heard it, it's new to me.
  4:08pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

they used to play it on WMMS in the 70s and even into the 80s
  4:10pm
emmagineering:

Is anyone in the band wearing a dashiki? that's a psych look necessity.
  4:10pm
Jeff:

I first read that Mighty Sparrow title as

Foo! Foo! Foo!

which would have been improbably silly.
  4:11pm
emmagineering:

Oh also HIIIyaww
  4:11pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

silly, yes; a bad song title, HELL NO!
  4:13pm
lupica:

Welcome back Bill!
  4:15pm
bz:

thx Mike
  4:17pm
BSI:

LOVE this Don Cherry record.
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Liked that Slits--the vocals sounded like the Belle Stars (albeit singing very unusual lyrics for that band!)
  4:19pm
kat330:

Melodica, yes?
  4:23pm
kat330:

I just looked it up. Yes, to answer myself.
  4:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

NOH MERCY!!! Wooooo!!
Since a whole album of their stuff is now released, I need to snag that!
  4:29pm
Cheri Pi:

Maiden!!!
  4:29pm
Chris from DC:

This Anton Maiden is my new favorite song.
  4:30pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

now this is a brain turner
  4:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Anton Maiden--I remember this, I think BT introduced me to him!

Hope I get a 666 math answer during this!! :)
  4:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Kept refreshing, closest I could get was 333 + 6...
  4:33pm
BSI:

Brilliant.
  4:38pm
Dear WFMU,:

I will mail you my shift knob.
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

"WFMU is all about creating fuzzy feelings. Help us out, and feel even fuzzier."
  4:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@bz: I first heard "Caucasian Guilt" from Noh Mercy too, so glad I only had to wait 2.5 years from the time I heard that to the comp!
  4:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mike Cooper's voice is a dead ringer (RIP, btw) for Phil Ochs.
  4:43pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

you're right, I was thinking he sounded like someone but couldn't place it.
  4:46pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I can hear the Hari Georgeson in there, but I don't get a feel for Alvin Lee in this tune.
  4:47pm
mark:

Mike Cooper ... nice. Picked up Chapman's Rainmaker on Record Store Day. CD on LITA has bonus tracks. Good stuff.
  4:47pm
Mike East:

Hari Georgeson??!! Awesome. I've been listening to Darkhorse ALOT lately. This is a great cover.
  4:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hari Hari!
  4:48pm
Mike East:

this version released one year before Harrison's. Interesting. Thank you, wiki.
  4:49pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

here's one for Irwin
  4:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is Hari Georgeson really George under a pseudonym for label purposes (a la "L'Angelo Mysterioso" with Cream"), or is that a way of paying tribute to George's sound (a la Lane Steinberg's "Buffalo Steinberg")?
  4:51pm
kat330:

Great set.
  4:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ah, Wiki, thanks Mike. Sure enough, George produced that whole project at his studio, and wrote that song, so I suppose that was a tongue in cheek joke on his part.
  4:51pm
bz:

it is the guitarist you think it is
  4:51pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

throw some Moby Grape down, and seal the deal
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

And, as Mike pointed out, this came out before George's own version of that song.
And thanks bz!
  4:55pm
Jeff:

Okay, maybe BZ needs a year between shows to rest up and prepare. Because this has been a good 'un!
  5:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

And already, there's less than an hour left to go.
"Summer's lease hath all too short a date..."

@Jeff: Even once a year is still a treat, if it takes a year to prepare, it must be worth that year!
  5:09pm
northguineahills:

Arrr... I don't have this John Fahey record.
  5:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

"In Aeternam[e] Vale" -- another Latin one. It would appear to say "Goodbye forever", I think.
  5:28pm
paula pc:

this 39 clocks stuff never gets old to me...THANKS for such a great show today, Bill!!!!!
  5:30pm
G:

Vale means "Be strong!" in Latin, and it's how they said Goodbye. So paula's right. "Good bye (and, be strong) into Forever/Eternity"
  5:30pm
Mr Donut:

is this 39 clocks stuff old? I've never heard of it. (LOVE it, btw)
  5:32pm
39 clocks:

We pissed off Joseph Beuys:
http://destijlrecs.com/39clocks.html
  5:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

A farewell, be strong, fare thee well.
  5:35pm
Liz B.:

Brilliant show, BZ! Don't be such a stranger!
  5:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Joseph Beuys kicked them out. WFMU takes them in!
  5:37pm
other david:

Just to echo what everyone else is saying, brilliant show BZ.
  5:38pm
Scott W:

Bill Z Bill Z Bill Z !! BILL Z!! so welcome back
  5:50pm
Arlene:

I love this song
  5:50pm
kat330:

Nothing matches the real deal.
  5:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Amen, kat!
This one is still powerful, 50+ years later!
  5:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Excellent finale to another amazing show, Bill!
See you next year, if not sooner! (Hopefully much much sooner! :)
