Yes, the end of Evol -- happy to take suggestions of two things tonight for the show: songs ending with locked grooves and songs with full starts and stops in them or with a fake fade out in the middle (i.e. Helter Skelter) -- any ideas? |

G:
Not sure it really applies, but side one of Peter Gabriel's 2nd solo album (c. 1978) has a song "White Shadow" that ends with a B flat keyboard tone that cuts off and, if you have the speakers cranked enough, transitions smoothly into the B flat of the background electrical hum, which continues indefinitely if you let the tone arm ride along in the innermost groove. I always wondered if that was deliberate :-)

Anybody listening via FM in Brooklyn nabes like Flatbush, Ditmas Park, Windsor Terrace, or Kensington? I was there this weekend and the Haitian 90.9 pirate was back on the air, interfering with FMU worse than ever. Hope it's not broadcasting all week too. Pelt the FCC with complaints maybe?
|
Mon. 4/23/12 11:16pm
D in Miami:
Sweet! I haven't heard this since it came out. That SP100 was a good comp.
|
Mon. 4/23/12 11:18pm
G:
@Ike: I wrote Liz about that problem the last time it was happening (maybe February) and part of her advice was for us to see if we can find an address or phone number for the pirate location, because a direct communication from FMU might work better than waiting months or years to get to the top of the FCC's docket. The internet shows that 90.9 is assigned to a local college radio station that the college station doesn't seem to be using, so the pirates decided it's empty and they can "use" it -- but with the output cranked so high it also kills 91.1's over air signal, and I have to stream. (I'm near Brooklyn College, and I'm pretty sure the pirate station is not too far north to northeast of here, within a couple of miles at most.)

That "Soundbite of the Day" from Looney Tunes:
Monotonous, isn't it? | |
|
Mon. 4/23/12 11:28pm
Ike:
@G: Yeah, I heard the pirate give out a phone number but it was in Haitian Creole so I couldn't understand most of it. I hope a French-speaking FMU listener in the area will monitor the pirate, or somebody will tape airchecks and pass them to the folks at FMU. As for the college station WKRB, they moved to 90.3 a few years ago, since 90.9 never made sense. Too crowded.

G:
Perhaps, but updating the playlist is a lot easier. :-)

@Ike: As of Feb., the 90.9 college station hadn't updated its website, FWIW. The commenter on the blogpost I gave a link to just now speculated "possibly from 55 Winthrop Street"...

...i highly reccomend streaming from @ least 2 different sources (e.g. 128k stream + radio/ flash stream + FMU-app/etc) ((driving earlier, fiddled w/dial assuming to be greeted w/sounds of throat singing...but, again, pleasingly appropriate. this time for a loopy monday))

Dan B:
Yes that 90.9 Kreyol pirate in Flatbush has been pissing me off for years. It obliterates WFMU's air signal when on air -- which luckily is sporadic. We should def. get their ID and phone number so Liz can go all medieval on their asses. What is the college that has that frequency?? I checked FCC website a week ago and saw no legit registrations at that freq. BTW, I live in Ditmas within blocks of the place, so maybe we can get a posse and go storm them and take their place over and simulcast WFMU there but just a little off phase. |
|

Alicia Renee:
@Ike @G experienced the irksome radio free flatbush rain on my wfmu-parade a couple months back. t'is a conundrum i suppose (where 2 set up one's pirate-bdcast for longevity vs. ethics of drowning out smaller, non-commerical stations)
|
Mon. 4/23/12 11:42pm
G:
@Dan: "WKRB 90.9 FM, Kingsborough Community College", now at 90.3 -- but plenty of webpages, including a Kingsboro one I saw early this year, listed it as if it's still at its old 90.9 frequency
|
Mon. 4/23/12 11:42pm
D in Miami:
I live in Little Haiti in Miami, and they do pirate radio here, too. But we really have no stations worth listening to in Miami. I only stream FMU for my radio needs.

@Dan, I think G is talking about Kingsborough College but they moved from 90.9 to 90.3 a few years ago. Info saying they're on 90.9 is outdated. The FCC once shut down a pirate at 90.9 in your general area. But that was 2008: http://tiny.cc/fritopirate Maybe they're back?

@Dan, I don't drive over to Brooklyn too often, but the Haitian pirate seemed stronger than ever this past weekend. Smashed WFMU's signal to bits well into Kensington, further than ever before in my experience. I really like Ditmas Park and might want to move there from NJ someday, but first y'all have to talk this pirate into moving elsewhere, like to 99.9 or something (although, that's most likely already occupied by OTHER pirates).
