"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot."

JA, did you see the article about Charles Gayle in this month's issue of The Wire? Pretty interesting.
|
|
Wed. 4/11/12 7:58am
JA:
hey george, have not seen that yet. thx for the heads up. gayle was the first jazz person i ever saw play live. he holds a special place in my heart, although the skids character scares the fuck out of me when he starts that mime stuff |
|
Wed. 4/11/12 8:03am
George of Troy:
Yeah, actually talks about the hobo/mime thing quite a bit. Also mentions a documentary from the 80's that I'm anxious to check out, about the free jazz scene in NYC. Gayle is featured in it.
|

Wed. 4/11/12 8:08am
JA:
interested in reading about the mime thing...it's always reminded me of neil young's "trans" and i wondered if charles had a child he needed to communicate to through clown makeup. that doc is great, look for it! |
