Favoriting April 5, 2012: w/ guest DJ Wills Glasspiegel and TRAXMAN (10:30/11aET)

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Wills Glasspiegel is a sonic explorer and producer at Afropop Worldwide who has helped introduce us to a range of new hyper-rhythmic sounds. He's a force behind Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music from South Africa, as well as the stateside emergence of Sierra Leone's king of Bubu music Janka Nabay. He's produced features on House and Footwork music from his hometown of Chicago, and on the pioneering field recording archivist Hugh Tracey. Following up his 2008 visit to Rob W's Transpacific Sound Paradise, Wills swings by at 10:30 to spin lots of new exclusives.

At 11:30 we'll also be joined by Traxman (pic), who drew upon Chicago's musical history to help revolutionize footwork music over the past two decades as a founder of the Geto DJz clique and a member of DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn's Ghetto Teknitianz. Traxman has been featured on the great Bangs & Works compilations, and Planet Mu is set to release his new album, Da Mind of Traxman.

  9:40am

this song is very sardonic.
I'm even afraid of the police now - these days. I wear hoodies!
  9:41am
BSI:

Hey, DCE: I'm finally going to use one of your classic message-board lines as a track title. Wanted to double-check your credit for the "thanks" block but your email address vanished ages ago. Msg me if possible, eh? EH!??!
  9:41am
BodegaMan:

I wasn't listening to the cheap talk. Are we officially in the Wills Glasspiegel part of the show?

This Mahjongg song is the cat's meow.

"organ bag"?

in full, it's DON'T EAT THE ORGAN BAG.
It was an instant classic.

glad you're diggin the coffee, it was roasted by Raf of The Polyps and Woolen Men! Anybody else who wants to send us coffee is welcome to do so! it makes for better radio!

Thanksgiving is a great source for inspiration in the weirdo/noise community, all around

I'm drinking green tea and eating pepitos since you were asking.
  9:58am

I had a baloney sammich and a triple espresso.

BSI:

slowly embalming myself with office machine coffee.
*sigh*...
  10:02am
Cheri Pi:

Cecile, I don't usually drink coffee but my dentist recommended it yesterday, I had 2 espresso shots and it reduced my Novocaine wearing off time by 2 hours. I'm one of those freaks who stay numb all day.
  10:02am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I want to fast but I keep making excuses
  10:02am
MALACH:

HEY JASON! Vibrant riddims!
  10:03am
glenn:

don't drink coffee? blasphemer. godless heathen.
  10:03am
Cecile:

wow, well, at least you're a cheap date, cheri. :D
  10:03am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

but I did kick my bagel habit
  10:05am
Cecile:

I saw a new dietitian. I get to eat dessert up to 2 times a day to "normalize" it. IE: don't wail on a cake like I'm a teenager at a keg party. It's pretty awesome.

glenn:

for anyone with gluten issues, or is interested in food / baking. http://life.nationalpost.com/2012/04/01/red-fife-wheat-how-heritage-became-so-hip/
  10:06am
Cheri Pi:

Well sometimes I drink coffee on the weekends but it makes me groggy. I always drink coffee in other countries. BSI-how did you find the French coffee?
  10:06am
glenn:

he went to france, and turned left, and there was coffee.
  10:07am
still b/p:

Went recently to a tea house with a friend who wanted coffee. They didn't sell any, and of course one of the main sensible reasons is smell of coffee would overwhelm everything else in the place.
  10:08am
dc pat:

where would we be w/o Lennon wit?
  10:08am
Cheri Pi:

Oh Glenn; you're one of us.
  10:08am
BSI:

@Cheri: I don't do the foofy coffees (nothing that involves extra ingredients or electrical agitation) -- but the few Cafe Noirs I had were decent: pungent like a dirty stew. Just what I needed.
  10:08am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

speaking of which, a certain chai is calling out to me now...
  10:09am
dc pat:

I drink coffee because I have to. If I don't, I will kill people. Don't really have an opinion on it other than that.
  10:09am
BSI:

...but waking up late every day meant it was more acceptable to go "a different route" with the liquids, after stumbling out into the blinding sun...
  10:10am
dc pat:

..yeah, don't really like coffee-flavored milkshakes like virtually everyone in DC.
  10:11am
Santa:

List note: Chai Karate cologne for DCE.
  10:11am
Cecile:

hahaha, dcp. That sounds right to me.

glenn, hard red wheat has always made the best flour. Good to see there are other varieties.
  10:12am
the glowing one:

I gave up drinking tea completely 1.5 months ago, now I'm not dead tired anymore when I wake up and my migrane attacks are gone
  10:12am
Cecile:

Santa, it already exists. It's called Old Spice.
  10:13am
Santa:

HHHOL
  10:13am
Cecile:

I need both coffee and/or Ritalin as long as I work a day job in an office. That's a fact, Jack.
  10:13am
glenn:

i've had quite a few baked goods recently that were made with the red fife wheat. delicious stuff, especially the cinnamon rolls, and i didn't get that bloaty feeling.
  10:15am
Cecile:

Jason: tell Traxman to smile more or he'll never make the cover of 5 magazine. :D
  10:16am
Righteous Bakers:

You've lost...that bloaty feeling...
  10:16am
BSI:

So is this anti-gluten movement based on sound medical wisdom? If I couldn't get the spicy curry gluten at my local Malaysian place, I fear I might go extravagantly mad...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
jason:

Cecile, did you watch this doc? www.npr.org...
  10:17am
Oestre Haws:

glutenschmuten
  10:20am
Cecile:

BSI: I think there are studies that show there are gluten-intolerant people out there, but there are fewer than is noted. On one hand, I think any diet that sends people toward whole grains is good, on the other hand, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. And, you know wheat flour is gluten-free. It doesn't develop gluten until you knead it. I personally could deal with everything being marked "gluten free" even bottles of water!
  10:21am
glenn:

i don't think it's the gluten so much as it is all the other crap that's in mass produced wheat and baked goods, but i could be wrong. i do know it's impossible to produce superior baked goods without wheat flour.
  10:22am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

for max healthiness, avoid all grains in favor of fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes...practically impossible, but a lofty goal.
  10:24am
Parq:

Loving the discussion on healthy eating. I got so into reading it that I got careless and spilled my milkshake.
  10:26am
Cecile:

good doc, Jason, and I like the fact that Traxman is soulful. That's my favorite kind of dance music. It can be experimental, but it has to have a connection to the drums.

No, DCE, not everyone can give up graims. Some people's systems are wired to thrive on them.
  10:27am
BSI:

I became vegetarian at age 15 to impress a hawt punk chick. Mid 40s now & still meatless, though the "inspiration" is long gone. True story.
  10:27am
BSI:

So much for "all the right reasons."
  10:27am
the glowing one:

here's a skeptical podcast about the gluten free marketing
http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4239
  10:30am
glenn:

it never fails to amuse me to see the vegetarian rock types who still drink like fish and shovel up every drug going into their bodies.
  10:31am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

the right drugs are good for you, the wrong ones are bad for you.
  10:32am
Cecile:

they aren't veggie for health reasons, that's why glenn.

anyway, we're omnivores. Not all in the same way. We're like bears or dogs - we eat everything until it gives us a tummy ache. then we either avoid it, or keep trying. LOL!
  10:32am
BSI:

@glenn: she definitely proved that "vegetarian" doesn't necessarily mean "healthy diet." Not by a longshot. I'm no saint, but .... *brr*....
  10:32am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

(stick with the right ones, in moderation)
  10:32am
the glowing one:

those drinks and drugs are free from corporate hate energy, so it's totally fine.
  10:33am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

except Budweiser, The Glowing One, that there's filled with RAGE
  10:34am
the glowing one:

but not the czech one :) that's like an elixir
  10:36am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

CZECH PLEASE!
  10:37am
Cecile:

I love me some (organ) bagpipes.
  10:39am
