Good morning Scott and listeners. @Scott: I really liked your performance at the hoof and mouth @Ben: I second that

Vikipedia:
Though the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe and Irish uilleann pipes have the greatest international visibility, bagpipes have been for centuries played throughout large parts of Europe, the Caucasus, around the Persian Gulf and in Northern Africa.

Thanks, Fred! That was super fun. Thanks to Heather Faye Kahn for Lydia Lunch vocals. Could not have done that w/o her help! |

I love bagpipes. The Irish uilleann are too refined.

bonnie bagpipes, aye :)

Rufus, now Angus! We named two of our regular squirrel visitors out back Rufus and Angus. :)
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:20am
Caryn:
Hello all! Note to self: get the Coltrane reissues. Both the Highland bagpipes and the uilleann are great instruments, but I do always laugh at the Braveheart soundtrack using uilleann bagpipes. Yeah, they're more melodic, but seriously: wrong country!
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:21am
Andrew Waterloo:
Say what you want about bagpipes. They'll always sound better than a large balloon.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:21am
Mike East:
I told my one Austin friend to go check out the show. I'm hoping he does so he'll turn into a WFMU convert and start pledging his cash!! Nobody listens to me when I tell them this is the only radio station that matters. I think you have to come to it yourself for it to really sink in.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:21am
Nathan:
My Scottish ex-girlfriend got an ASBO for regularly playing bagpipes to gabba music in Glasgow. What an unholy union. Still makes me laugh though simply because it's so ridiculous.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:24am
Chris from DC:
I was hoping for David Watson when you mentioned the pipes.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:24am
kat330:
@Caryn: Hey, BTW, I was way off the mark about my Holiday the other day. Not only is mine NOT on CD, it is actually a double vinyl set from 1972 on Columbia: "God Bless the Child," produced by Chris Albertson from the John Hammond Collection. I guess your 10-album CD was only on a wish list at some point in time! :) The vinyl has some nice cover art by Cliff Condak as seen here: http://www.discogs.com/Billie-Holiday-God-Bless-The-Child/release/2785503
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:25am
Kurt:
Ulleann pipes sure don't inspire one to go off to battle. Or play golf for that matter.

Apparently someone is play bagpipes on the Morgan Stanley fixed income trading floor! See what you started, Scott!?
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:31am
Caryn:
Then again, seeing as Braveheart is a movie that in every way goes "aw, screw historical accuracy", the choice of the uilleann bagpipes is maybe totally appropriate. @kat: cool cover!
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:35am
bruceleh:
Oh, bagpipes, tomorrow is St. Paddy's day!
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:37am

put on the headphones, heard the pipes, and mentally went "JONESY!" before i heard scott's voice.

Fri. 3/16/12 10:45am

Heh, Dave! Although the pipes would have to be playing the theme to The Magnificent Seven.

Okay, is an elephantine crocodile just a really big croc, or is it some old name for the hippo? You know, like how the Romans called giraffes camellopards, because they looked like a mix of a camel and a leopard.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:49am
kat330:
This looks pretty damn big: http://lyntwitchell.com/images/david_with_croc_2.jpg

But not even as big as this: http://fan-tas-tic.com/wp-content/uploads2/2011/12/meanwhile-in-africa-giant-crocodile1.jpg

Fri. 3/16/12 10:53am
Caryn:
Oh, for the days of Eddie & Finbar Furey...
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:55am
Caryn:
You know, that last one could definitely be called elephantine. But it's so big that the mouth looks kinda small in proportion...
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:58am
kat330:
Yeah, well, I wouldn't call him "small mouth" to his face.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 10:59am
Caryn:
Hey, I'm snarky but not an idiot! Well, not that kind of idiot, anyways...

Caryn, do the Finns celebrate tomorrow night at all? (and I don't mean the Finn bros)
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:04am
kat330:
JT brought home some Guinness -- the only beer he likes -- and I dunno if he's turning 100% 'merkan or it was already somewhat traditional. [If he starts watching Am. football, I'm going to ask his family to deprogram him in May. :) ]
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:05am
Caryn:
@kat: not really. Certainly the Irish pubs all have events planned, but there's no general celebrating.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:09am
kat330:
I understand it's not a big deal in Ireland either. At least compared with the U.S.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:09am
Caryn:
It's very much an American holiday. I mean, it's nor particularly celebrated in Ireland either.

kat330:
I'd settle for a pinky link, but either one must be virtual.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:13am
Caryn:
On a side note, I've always wanted to try a shamrock shake. Holding out my hooked pinky as I type.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:13am
Mike East:
I'm just glad St. Patrick's day is on a Saturday this year so I won't have to deal with the drunk tourists on the bus.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:13am
Andrew Waterloo:
St. Patrick's day has become nothing more than drunken plastic green obnoxiousness, and a few parades.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:14am
Caryn:
You know, this is not the most riveting track I've ever heard. It's becoming white noise.
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:14am
kat330:
Aren't they just vanilla shakes with green food coloring?
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:16am
Caryn:
@kat: see, I have no idea! I just like the name and the colour, so I'm curious.

|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:24am

@Deepak: I like it a lot. I saw Ian Nagoski play once, he had a bunch of CDR compilations of 78s, amazing stuff there
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:25am
kat330:
I'm confused.... | |
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:25am
Caryn:
I sometimes suspect Chicago uses that as an excuse. "Yeah, the river's green. That food colouring, you know, for St. Patrick's Day! Nothing to do with pollution! Nothing at all! ... Stop looking at me!"
|
Fri. 3/16/12 11:28am
Sam:
Yes, then they can say "Chicago is a very green city"
