That AshRaTempel record = yet further proof of my epiphany that all the greatest LPs were either released or recorded in 1971..... in my humble opinion, anyway.
|
Thu. 3/15/12 9:33am
Cecile:
wow, you know you're old when things like the Hall of Fame still seem new, and they've already been reissued.
|
Thu. 3/15/12 9:34am
Cecile:
I would say that, except I like too many LPs from '74 and '77! And '84
|
Thu. 3/15/12 9:37am
BSI:
There's definitely great exceptions, but something wicked and marvelous was in the water of Europe in '71...
|
Thu. 3/15/12 9:39am
Cecile:
I have to agree. I think everyone's water! All kinds of great and wonderous vinyl came out that year - even though my dad's hippie students were already mourning the Sixties.
|
Thu. 3/15/12 9:39am
Cecile:
Hippie mining engineers. Kind of an oxymoron.
|
Thu. 3/15/12 9:42am
SueP:
better drugs in the late '60s / early '70s. that's my theory.

some of it is that a lot of "corny" stuff was filtered out by then by time and taste. Plus, the hard rock influence I guess... Piper is from what 66" or 67" and is still amazing |

i was released in 1971! great great great show

listener james from westwood:
fear and loathing in las vegas was written in '71, even if water was about the last thing hunter thompson might be thought of as drinking....

BSI:
Just off the top of my wrecked brain, there was Ash Ra Tempel's first, the Faust clear LP, Hawkwind's "X In Search of Space," Amon Duul II's 'dance of the lemmings' ... tago mago -- bloody Cluster '71, guru guru's 'hinten' -- etc etc etc... all the stars were aligned or some wacky thing.

ha, Jeff you're funny. "It was great, no it was decent, no it was terrible."

michael morley is the name of the guy from Dead C
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:23am
Cecile:
so I have been wanting to check out Dead C work from the last couple of years, but it seems like their audience is really polarized about them. Where to start with the 2006-present stuff?
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:26am
Cheri Pi:
What a great track by Julia Holter, Cecile-if you figure out the Dead C conundrum, fill me in too.
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:27am
Chris from DC:
The self-titled record on Language is fantastic, one of their best. Seret Earth is also really good, and probably easier to come by.
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:31am
Chris from DC:
Oops, actually, I forgot the s/t record is older than 2006.
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:31am
Cecile:
thanks, Chris. | |
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:32am
Cecile:
I think Cheri, when there is that much disagreement, I just gotta roll up my sleeves and get dug in
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:35am
Cheri Pi:
I do the same Cecile, sometimes the social, or literary context of music, (reviews, blogs etc) get me stuck, then I'll hear it on WFMU and realize I just need to own it and listen to every track.

MV+EE played in my town about 4 years ago and I was the only one there. It was disappointing that no one showed up but it was really awesome that MV+EE still played and I got a private concert.

Secret Earth is good. Never knew there was a rift among fans.. I just like a bunch of their stuff all over the place |
|
Thu. 3/15/12 10:47am
Cecile:
I didn't know that either. You played Gate, and then I wondered what the Dead C were up to. I saw they had released several albums after the comp I got which goes up to 2005. Then all of a sudden it's, oh the electronics are great, the electronics are terrible, it's really listenable, it's unlistenable, it's adventurous, no, it's safe and my brain started to spin.
