Hello Destroit!
@mike noble: Sometimes I'm disappointed because the math questions are the same, or too similar to each other!

No one will ever figure out this is a cross between Love Train and Give Me Just a Little More Time {rubs hands evilly}
Sun. 3/11/12 1:19am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: (fade in...) I talked with Blumin one weekend taking my pledge, I let him know how much I enjoyed his banter with you!

This Trammps is earlier, reminds me of the Chairmen of the Board more than "Disco Inferno"--oh no, did one of their members just pass?

@Producer: C'mon, we're not that stupid! :P
Sun. 3/11/12 1:21am Matt from Springfield:

Though that was a great rhythm, more mid 60s or '71 era soul than mid 70s pre-disco, I prefer that kind of rhythm myself.

@G: - My parents forced me to join our church's choir. The choir director, though (or perhaps because) a close family friend, did not allow me to sing. I can lip sync every major protestant hymn.
Sun. 3/11/12 1:25am mike noble in dc:

it's always annoyed me that that 10 disc stax box is called "the complete stax..." i've always thought that stax should have gotten one of those motown treatments with a REAL complete treatment. not just a collected treatment.
Sun. 3/11/12 1:26am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: (White) Protestant or (Black) Protestant style?

Sun. 3/11/12 1:28am Matt from Springfield:

DJ Julie has played Dave's recent material, his really "hippy-dippy" stuff, but this new song by him is a return to his classic form.
  Sun. 3/11/12 1:28am Marmalade Kitty:

Matt, no competition..!
Sun. 3/11/12 1:30am Holly in NC:

@mike noble - total agreement!
@Matt - oh very, very, very white. Congregationalist, New England, 70s
@Trammp's Producer, you are my hero
Sun. 3/11/12 1:31am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Kitty!
No competition regarding soul vs. pre-disco? I agree soul wins every time.

Sun. 3/11/12 1:33am Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Ah, Banned in Boston! :\

So this is the answering song to Band of Gold? I'm not sure if I'm joking this time...
Sun. 3/11/12 1:37am Holly in NC:

@Matt - In the Protestant universe Congregationalists are actually a mere speck away from being as cool as Unitarians, theologically & ideologically speaking. Very tolerant & welcoming. Except for my voice ;-)

+ 1 some other guy
Sun. 3/11/12 1:43am Matt from Springfield:

@sog: Oh yeah, Julie had described Dave's recent projects as "hippy dippy", and when she played his stuff I found that yes, his recent work is indeed very out there, very spiritual. Still psychedelic, but in a much more wiffy, spiritual experience.
  Sun. 3/11/12 1:44am Destroit:

Good night Holly, :)
Sun. 3/11/12 1:44am Matt from Springfield:

Early Grass Roots, '66, this must still be P.F. Sloan vehicle era. Is he the composer mentioned on the record?
Avatar    Sun. 3/11/12 1:45am Joe McG:

Goodbye, Holly, goodbye (to the tune of the Left Banke)!
  Sun. 3/11/12 1:45am G:

@Joe: I checked and t was released in late 1971 (Band of Gold was 1970). There are several singles in between, so it's not a direct follow-up. But I guess it sounds like a stab at "Freda can do love songs that are happy and not about shocking disappointment"...
Avatar    Sun. 3/11/12 1:45am Joe McG:

@Matt: Indeed, Matt, it's a Sloan-Barri composition.
Avatar    Sun. 3/11/12 1:47am Joe McG:

I love the "shocking disappointment"!
Sun. 3/11/12 1:47am Holly in NC:

Final thought - Dave Davies new stuff (as the Aschere Project) is totally unKinks-like, but I like it a lot. Really glad DJ Julie turned me on to it. The only possible frame of reference is 70s-80s Dredd Foole vs. current Dredd Foole - the complete stylist change is astounding
Sun. 3/11/12 1:47am Matt from Springfield:

All right!!! Thanks Joe, love the Grass Roots, both Creed Barton era and after (the super weird guy from The Office! He was probably on that 45!)

Sun. 3/11/12 1:49am Holly in NC:

This is eerie! The band that made me "sing" did the very best cover of I'm You Man, ever. God bless Pine State, terribly missed.
Sun. 3/11/12 1:50am some other guy:

@Matt (/Holly): I haven't heard this stuff, and I think I'll be checking it out tomorrow. It's whether or not you knew "This Man..." was a song from Arthur, that I was/am unable to ascertain.
Sun. 3/11/12 1:51am Holly in NC:

@Joe - didn't he write Born to Be Wild? Or was that his brother?

Aw crap, it's not on the Arthur LP, just the bonus tracks on the CD reissue... well, like I started my original comment... I guess the point is, it's old, and I'm durnk.
Sun. 3/11/12 1:59am mike noble in dc:

slow to the grass roots conversation... just want to make sure, has everyone read up on the convoluted history of "let's live for today"? good stuff!
Sun. 3/11/12 3:00am Matt from Springfield:

I know "Let's Live For Today" was (one of many at the time) English translations of Italian pop songs; anything else worth knowing about it?

Sun. 3/11/12 3:10am Matt from Springfield:

Hmm, instrumental 1981 album. Amanda Nazario just played from Richard Thompson's 1983 album "Hand of Kindness", she rec'd highly. The song she played was very Cajun tinged. With accordion played by Richard!
Sun. 3/11/12 3:10am Brian en Angleterre:

I used to have a P F Sloan record in the 70s called Raised on Records. Good songwriter.
Sun. 3/11/12 3:10am mike noble in dc:

and that was probably because it was an italian song written by a english beat band working in italy... but an english translation was made and recorded by a different band back in england BEFORE the original italian was released.
Sun. 3/11/12 3:12am Matt from Springfield:

@mike: Ah. Although different confusing versions by the Grass Roots would prob be best expressed by "Where Were You When I Needed You" -- no less than THREE different versions of P.F. Sloan's song were recorded and released from 1965-66, by three different bands all called the Grass Roots!
  Sun. 3/11/12 3:12am Slimslacks:

You mean you don't have your documents? Goodnight!
  Sun. 3/11/12 3:13am Deepak:

i love how this track takes a turn towards a more folk sound
Sun. 3/11/12 3:13am mike noble in dc:

oh it seems i have that wrong still... the first english translation was recorded by a dutch band.
Sun. 3/11/12 3:13am Matt from Springfield:

Hey, all! Just wanted to say thanks for listening. I feel like I'm being pulled up short, like a cart horse. Anyway, have a great week--I'm pre-empted next week for Tejas, so I'll see you all in two weeks. Sorry I can't do my all Irish show for you.

@Joe: Nick the Bard directed for us to email pledge related questions to you, and if we didn't have any to say thank you anyway.

I'll not clog your inbox and say now: THANK YOU JOE for your great work managing all our pledges and swag! Year round, not just at Marathon time! :)

wikipedia: "Jandek is an outsider musician presumably from Houston, Texas, who has self-released 59 albums without ever granting a real interview. His first album, Ready for the House, was first accredited [sic] to a band called "The Units". Jandek stopped using the Units name and started using his own after being contacted by Scott Ryser of the [synthpunk band from] S.F. [called The] Units. Mr. Ryser holds a U.S. Trademark on the name "Units"."

Sun. 3/11/12 3:29am mike noble in dc:

Sun. 3/11/12 3:31am Matt from Springfield:

@Ken: It's on interest-free loan until half a year later!

Great show Joe! Look forward to your next full length show!

Hiya, Joe. As usual, I listened live to the first hour and then turned in. Listened to the rest on the archives. Fine stuff, as always. As for your lost half hour, the fall giveth and the spring taketh away.
