Listener comments!

  Fri. 3/9/12 3:05pm T-Zero:

Good afternoon, Mr KG.

Is the sports bleed an intentional joke after the HnM, or something else?
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:05pm BDR:

John Cale is 70 today, just in case that gives you any ideas please.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:06pm kat330:

The eyes have it! Hi, Kurt, and congrats on a fine marathon!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 3:09pm DJKG:

not a joke, a commentary. jokes are commercial radio bullshit. happy birthday john cale. thanks kat. oh, and, that was a joke. good afternoon.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:10pm kat330:

I see no attribution -- still MN Jeff at the pixels?
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:11pm northguineahills:

I loved the espn bleed, as I'm about to tune in to espn3.com to watch a game (muted, so I can still hear Kurt).
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 3:14pm DJKG:

oops! thanks, kat.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:16pm kat330:

Cool.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:20pm Cecile:

Ornette Coleman also has a birthday.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:29pm BodegaMan:

Excellent marathon DJ KG. I think your pre-marathon ghost of dj premiums past show started the whole successful campaign.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:29pm Carmichael:

It's also Mickey Dolenz's birthday! What a good reason to play even more Monkees! Hi Kurt, I'm glad I tuned in late. Debbie Boone makes me want to kill things.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:30pm kat330:

Oooh, I love this -- many thanks!
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:35pm BodegaMan:

I think MN Jeff has fully reached .gif Jedi status. Starting with that cosmos-lion a couple weeks ago, he's operating on a new level. (I guess it's kind of odd to talk about Jeff like he's not here, but it's easier to keep typing than go back/edit).
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:41pm kat330:

Kurt, is the narrative from an actual critic's pen?
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:43pm still b/p:

You Light Up My Life ....stuck....in....head. You...monster...
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 3:45pm DJKG:

kat: yes! half the cd is tracks written around period reviews of bartok.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:46pm 12539:

@kat at least some of it is from Frederick Corder:
http://chambermusiciantoday.com/blog/posts/In-love-with-Slonimsky-part-1/
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:47pm kat330:

Well, Corder (et al) apparently fired brain neurons with boots on.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 3:49pm DJKG:

i love how often mn jf's gifs seem to go with the music! thanks for doing them, jeff, and for pledging during the marathon!
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:49pm kat330:

Thanks for the info and link.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:52pm Bridget:

Helloo, Kurt!
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:53pm kat330:

Wow, this trumpet is gorgeous!
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:54pm T-Zero:

@Kat: I was just thinking that myself and wondering who the soloist is.
Fri. 3/9/12 3:55pm some other guy:

my house is vibrating
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:56pm Clueless:

Someone get that phone, please.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:56pm T-Zero:

@Kat: I suppose it would be relevant re: my pondering, knowing I'm usually more of a string/woodwind person than a brass person, heh.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:57pm northguineahills:

Gee, I haven't heard the Canadian Brass since I was a wee lad in marching band, playing the mellophone.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:57pm kat330:

@T-Zero: I'm not the best at Binging, but I got this far: Jens Lindemann;Ronald Romm;David Ohanian;Eugene Watts;Charles...
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:58pm kat330:

...so I presume one of those dudes is the trumpet soloist.
  Fri. 3/9/12 3:59pm T-Zero:

Heh, I had to go look to see what a mellophone was...
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 4:00pm DJKG:

probably jens lindemann, according to the notes. they refer to piccolo tpt and he's the only one billed as playing that on the record
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:00pm kat330:

And yes, I've said on some PL here before that trumpet is usually too blunt for me, but I love its use in Costello's "Shipbuilding" and the Bach trumpet. I believe that Penny Lane instrument was not your typical marching band ilk.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:01pm kat330:

Answered before asked! Thanks DJKG (but not for the ear bleed just a moment ago).
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:02pm T-Zero:

@DJKG: Yep! Jens Lindemann... From a review: "with an amazing Piccolo trumpet introduction played by Jens Lindemann"
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:06pm G:

The tube of a piccolo trumpet is built to pitch it an octave above a standard trumpet. Something I recall from a "Physics of Music" course in college.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:07pm kat330:

Does anyone know if it's harder to play? It was certainly a lovely tone.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:08pm mto:

supreme dicks because they are all named richard
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:08pm T-Zero:

@G: Yeah. Once it was pointed out it was a piccolo trumpet, that explained for me the purity of those hight notes.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:11pm Looms:

Listening to the show while whatching silent movies; it's sometimes strange but lovely.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:12pm steve:

whoa! good idea Looms!
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:13pm G:

The piccolo trumpet makes it easier to play the higher ranges of Baroque trumpet lines (a problem partly caused in the first place because our tuning for standard A as 440 hertz is considerably higher than A was 300 years ago).

The story goes that McCartney heard a piccolo trumpet being played in a performance of the Brandenburg Concertos, and asked George Martin if it could be used for the Penny Lane solo. Several solos had already been recorded for the song, but McCartney thought none was what he envisioned. The rest is piccolo trumpet history (it was a minor classical instrument before Penny Lane).
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:15pm kat330:

Ah, G.-whiz -- seriously, thanks for that! A font of edification you are.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:15pm G:

Too much music theory in high school and college :-)
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:15pm Carmichael:

I have a video of Joey Baron playing with Bill Frizell (along with Kermit Driscoll and Hank someone or other on bass). Very unsettling and interesting.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:15pm northguineahills:

G beat me to it (piccolo trumpet). It is slightly harder to play w/ smaller embouchure and mouth piece, and the length is smaller. It takes some practice.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:16pm kat330:

@Looms: I often have something visual I watch during any music playing, FMU or elsewise. Especially while watching ice skating, gymnastics, and the like.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:18pm northguineahills:

(I'm watching basketball w/ FMU on. So much easier to take then game announcers and squeaky shoes.)
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:19pm kat330:

I gather, ngh, you play trumpet? I figure it must be a bit harder, which makes that tone produced by Lindemann even more impressive.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:24pm northguineahills:

I used to play trumpet, french horn, and mellophone. I now only own a 1950s era cornet, but the spit valve just broke off, so, I need to get it fixed. I would die for a french horn, but they are so expensive.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:25pm kat330:

Did anyone else here truck-backing-up beeps when the call was lost?
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:25pm Looms:

(sorry for the late answers, focused on the interview)
@steve: definitely
@kat330: I useally read graphic novels
@Kurt: ah, technology... don't give up!
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:26pm kat330:

Arrrggh. HEAR not here....sigh....
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:27pm northguineahills:

@kat330: Yes!
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:27pm kat330:

[my own neurons often wear boots]
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:27pm Homophones:

Aren't we fun :-)
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:32pm Mary Wing:

Human League, woo!
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:35pm Slimslacks:

This song so keeps it real
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:37pm Cecile:

Jamie, we're going to have to have a disussion about your selection. :D
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:38pm Cecile:

Hey. Kurt! You should call me sometime.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:38pm das:

My anti semitic computer rebooted during that interview
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 4:39pm DJKG:

cecile - i have to learn how to work the phones first!
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:40pm Cecile:

Ha!
But srsly, I'm home next Friday. You will have to use the delay, though, I cuss a lot without meaning to.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:41pm Cecile:

or even better....get Ed Saad on the phone!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 4:43pm DJKG:

that would be a trip to get saad on the phone! have you listened to the tracks on the fma?
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:45pm Cecile:

I listened to one, he's hilarious.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:46pm ::JT:::

Nice coming home to the sounds of Fiery Furnaces... though I only really know the first album and then scattered individual songs since.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 4:46pm DJKG:

OY! it's a long link, but here it is: freemusicarchive.org...
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:49pm ::JT:::

Is this the sound of Philippe jumping up and down the wire, remixed?
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:49pm kat330:

Hi, hunaja, you're home! :) What's with all the colons though?
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:50pm Droll:

Great Jason Forrest tune! I miss DJ Donna Summer, my gateway DJ to WFMU.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:52pm ::JT:::

Indeed I am. I'm taking a stand amongst all the other jts and JTs and J.T.s and any other permutations. Of course oddly, it shows three colons after my name, even though I only see or enter two.
Fri. 3/9/12 4:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I heard that Jimmy Ellis, lead singer of the Trammps, has died. Their big hit was "Disco Inferno" back in the 70s.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:53pm ::JT::

I borrowed kat330s neuron boots. I guess EVERYone has one colon at the end. Homer Simpson.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:54pm Carmichael:

This broad can belt out a tune, eh??
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:54pm Cecile:

he made that song, Ken.
The way he punches the word "satisfaction"
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:56pm G:

@KenHP: This is the obit from his local newspaper:

http://bit.ly/xiRbOJ
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:57pm northguineahills:

Thought that was Shelley. She has a new Tzadik record? Gneisse!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 4:58pm DJKG:

yeah, nguinea! serioiusly might be her best.
  Fri. 3/9/12 4:59pm ::JT::

Saw her in mid-90s in Helsinki, but I think I only ever had anything of hers on various Zorn LPs.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:02pm northguineahills:

I have a 3" cdr of her live in Moscow (2003) w/ Toshio Kajiwara (trntbls) that Toshio gave me. I should rip it and zip it! (and give it out to whomever wants it [w/ Toshio's and Shelley's permission, of course])
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:08pm DJKG:

NGHills, I'm jealous! (i have a thing for those miniature cds)
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:14pm trolly mctrollerson:

I guess this is what thems calls 'Avant Garde'
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:23pm northguineahills:

Otomo!!!! Yeehaw!!!!
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:23pm kat330:

What's up with all the high-pitched squeal-tones this afternoon (beginning with Bryce)? Am I the only one whose ears are sensitive to it?
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:24pm T-Zero:

On what does one play a 3" CD?
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:24pm armalade Kitty:

high pitch tonal interferance is always avant garde!
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:24pm sua:

trying to weed out people who can hear piercing high tones? turning off.. to.. spare... brain....!
Fri. 3/9/12 5:25pm some other guy:

I wish the device used to make this sound was within stabbing distance. I would get it good.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:25pm T-Zero:

@Kat: No. And I'm definitely not a fan of those high pitch squeals
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:26pm DJKG:

kat, i read a study once (purely neurological, not related to music) that high pitched sine wave tones trigger a reaction in women's brains about 100 times more often than in men. guess that doesn't help you, but i always thought it was interesting.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:26pm kat330:

Armalade! :) WTM?
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:26pm DJKG:

especially since sachiko m, the rock star of sine waves, is female.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:27pm DJKG:

anyway, only four more minutes of sine waves and we'll be on to a proper guitar / sax / drum trio
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:27pm kat330:

@DJKG: Well, it sure knocks the boots off this gal's neurons (which may be a good thing, but the ear bleed begs me to mute ;)
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:27pm Cecile:

When my tinnitis was bad, the inside of my eardrum would twich painfully. It's much better now.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:28pm steve:

yikes... i thought my ears were ringing. enjoyed everything else on the show today but have to turn this off. nonetheless, im happy there is a radio station that will play such alienating music!
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:28pm ::JT::

I hear it all the time so makes me no nevermind. Tinnitus annoys mostly when listening to Marcel Marceau records.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:28pm DJKG:

relief in deafness, cecile?
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:28pm Cecile:

I think my eardrums are too scarred up by the awful, random fire alarm at my old place of work to care any more
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:29pm T-Zero:

Well, I'm male, and the reaction it illicits in me is to mute the sound until the track's over.... Sorry. I know... ya can't please everyone ;)
Fri. 3/9/12 5:29pm some other guy:

I am going to buy this CD just for the satisfaction of repeatedly hitting it with a hammer.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:29pm Cecile:

I think so, Kurt.
Actually, my hearing has been good. It's my concentration that sucks. I'm not deaf, it just seems like it.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:29pm DJKG:

75 seconds, t-o
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:31pm steve:

so is there a scientific explanation for why this is so agonizing?
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:31pm kat330:

Back on, yay!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:31pm DJKG:

ha! they just called from upstairs to see if the high-pitched squeal was part of the track!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:32pm DJKG:

steve, yes. and you're in the minority! it doesn't affect me that way. for every you clutching your ears, there's 100 women doing so. at least according to this study that i wish i'd kept a copy of.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:35pm kat330:

Aha, so now I see! This was a plan cooked up between Bryce and you to drive all the estrogen away today? :)
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:36pm Mark T in VT:

My wife is hearing this and wants to punch Bryce in the head. I told her it is Kurt on right now. But she comes home on Friday afternoons and hears noise from either Bruce or Kurt depending on the time.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:36pm Cecile:

The frequency sets your inner ear a'vibrating, IME. You can feel your eardrum flapping around and the longer it goes, the more painful it is.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:36pm Cecile:

But it's actually kind of relaxing me right now.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:36pm kat330:

[There being such an overload on Duane's show Wednesday.]
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:37pm Cecile:

You wear the wrap sweater, you gotta pay the price.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:37pm northguineahills:

3" cds can be played by most cd players and laptops that have dvd drives.

I have ultrasonic hearing (albeit it has gotten weaker since I've been going to loud concerts/parties/rehearsals), and the sine wave tone drives my brain crazy, but I like it. I can hear if any electronic device is on in a room, or a burglar alarm is armed, just hearing the ultrasonic frequencies they emit.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:38pm steve:

a physicist friend did sound-pain experiments based on his research a few years ago... most of them were these slightly distorted wavery high pitched sine wave things. god, they were awful. maybe i can find the study, it is or was online with the sound files.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:38pm kat330:

But the mute button foiled both your plans, ha!
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:39pm steve:

northguineahills... thats so cool! you're a step away from being a human oscilloscope!
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:40pm kat330:

Kurt, our waiter!
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:40pm Cecile:

steve, good name for a band.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:41pm T-Zero:

@nghills: Ok. Thanks. I was wondering how it kept them centered.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:41pm Cecile:

Northguineahills and the Human Osciiloscope.
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:42pm DJKG:

two words: black noise.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:42pm kat330:

@ngh: I've never been tested, but I believe I have something akin to it as well. ALWAYS, very sensitive to high-pitched sounds. So you can hear a dog whistle?
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:43pm steve:

very true Cecile... Human Oscilloscope would be great band name!
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:43pm ::JT::

I can hear Helmut thinking.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:44pm northguineahills:

...but, w/ the ubiquitous amount of electronic devices, it makes it hard to dicern where my tinnitus begins and where the ultrasonic shrill tones electronic devices emit ends.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:44pm kat330:

@JT: As in put on your thinking Kapp?
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:45pm northguineahills:

@kat330: Yes, I can hear most dog whistles, just not the ultra-high pitched whistles.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:46pm kat330:

I love the deep tones, OTOH. This evokes whale song at moments.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:47pm ::JT::

@kat -- yup. And I'm not talking about Andy Breckman's Gutter Helmut.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:48pm kat330:

And then it comes 'round again.....ohhh...at least it's not incessant in this one.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:51pm kat330:

I sleep soundly at night w/our "white noise" machine.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:52pm steve:

these organic high pitched squeals i find so pleasant... maybe its something about the unnaturally pure physical quality of the sine tones from synths and fire alarms thats unnatural for our ears. we're not robots, after all.
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:53pm armalade Kitty:

squeaeaeaEaeeEeaaAeeeeeeeeeeaeaaaeaaaaAAAaaaeeeEeeaaaal :)
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:54pm kat330:

Signing off here -- thanks, Kurt, and have a great weekend all! Caryn, if you're lurking or read this before Sunday, have a Hyvaa Syntymapaivaa! [yes, I put 2+2 together from some earlier convo]
  Fri. 3/9/12 5:54pm Minnesota Jeff:

Good afternoon!
Avatar Fri. 3/9/12 5:54pm DJKG:

steve, i think so. i high note on a violin is a variety of pitches. an electronic tone can be unyielding.
