nice mauve.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:12am glenn:

brad paisley's a little bit too new country for me, but he's a great guitarist.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:12am mrmucho:

mike, re: Wrecking Crew, have you ever checked out Paul Williams' first LP, 'someday man'? really great album with their backing.
Avatar Sat. 3/10/12 11:14am Michael:

Glenn - do you have a date after which all Country music becomes bad?
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:14am Girondo:

greetings from Argentina :)
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:21am glenn:

hmmmmm. not really a date, so much as a..... propensity to add steel guitar and fiddle to pop music and package it as country.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:23am glenn:

and there's still lots of great country music being made, it's just not being played on the country radio stations.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:26am northguineahills:

@glenn: I suppose that goes for most genres. My usual cutoff for country country is 1982, many noteworthy exceptions notwithstanding.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:26am dave:

well shelley, i guess that settles that!
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:27am Mike East:

Brad Paisley made an appearance at William Shatner's broadway show a few weeks ago - we rented a guitar to them...a D28 if I remember right.
Avatar Sat. 3/10/12 11:27am Michael:

Beside being "little bit too new" what exactly is wrong bad about the Paisley track I played?
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:27am glenn:

randy travis and garth brooks. that's the date.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:33am Jay/ London:

hey Michael been long time since i caught you live
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:33am mrmucho:

'82 is about where records in all genres started to sound bad due to recording techniques. it's only gotten worse.

my only beef with modern country is that they are basically making rock records with some twang.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:34am glenn:

nothing. brad paisley doesn't engage me the same way george jones or don gibson or ernest tubb or even robby fulks or laura cantrell do.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:34am northguineahills:

I don't think anything is wrong w/ Brad Paisley per se, but his country is more pop then country. The only problem I can find w/ that track is the production values (placement of the instrument mics, etc). His virtuosity on the guitar makes his music stand out compare to what usually comes out of Nashville these days.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:45am Mike East:

Great Sinatra pick, Mr. Shelley
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:46am JSG:

  Sat. 3/10/12 11:47am glenn:

huh. frank never appeared on the muppet show. that's a travesty.
  Sat. 3/10/12 11:49am G:

It's almost like there was only one band in existence playing every single genre being recorded in LA for top 40 radio... (see JSG's link)
Sat. 3/10/12 11:52am Brian en Angleterre:

northguineahills, as well as being a Phil Ochs fan you used one of my favourite words that I use whenever; that being notwithstanding!!
Sat. 3/10/12 11:54am Brian en Angleterre:

By the by when did Country & Western become Country. 'Bout the same time Rock 'n Roll became Rock.
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:02pm glenn:

actually, way back when, there were country charts and there were western charts. somewhere around the mid 40's they kinda got lumped together.
Sat. 3/10/12 12:08pm Brian en Angleterre:

Our library must still have a stockpile of C & W labels. As they are still in use. If in doubt file under Rock & Pop!!
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:13pm Mike East:

Great interview, Michael!
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:15pm Crank:

Sorry, but I still like what Mad Mag called them - the Captain and Schlemiel.
Avatar Sat. 3/10/12 12:16pm Michael:

Thanks Mike - & thanks for lunch last week!
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:18pm Mike East:

No doubt! Cooking for FMU was truly an honor.
Sat. 3/10/12 12:19pm Tom - In Gravesend Brooklyn:

it's amazing when you think about how the music went through just incredible changes from like say 1962 - 1967 !!! in just those like 5 years changed more then from 30 years ago until present today 1! ...
Sat. 3/10/12 12:26pm fred von helsing:

Aimee has some stories to tell 'bout the music biz !
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:38pm king penguin:

mrmucho: That might be your only beef but it's quite a big one. I blame Garth Brooks. As soon as he hit, it was over.
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:40pm king penguin:

Problem with Brad Paisley is that he sings.
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:41pm Nutley Sam:

Cargoe? Who? What? This is great!
Avatar Sat. 3/10/12 12:42pm Michael:

cargoe is from the Ardent Studio scene... I think
Sat. 3/10/12 12:49pm fred von helsing:

@m.e. what was on the menu? i have this mental image of marathon wfmu'ers soldiering on fueled only by rice, beans, and tequila
Sat. 3/10/12 12:50pm fred von helsing:

this one sounds very much like ELO !
Sat. 3/10/12 12:51pm Brian en Angleterre:

I'm getting confused with Doug Paisley. Bet you never thought playing Brad P would cause this much writing, Michael.
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:52pm Mike East:

soup/sandwich/salad combo - lentil soup, varieties of sandwiches on Italian bread (prosciutto, soppressata, turkey, ham, fresh mozz, provolone, olive tapenade, pesto), and a mixed green salad.
  Sat. 3/10/12 12:55pm G:

ya yella rat bastid!!!
Sat. 3/10/12 12:58pm fred von helsing:

well done!
"a marathon does not run on tequila alone."
