tim from champas - I worked overnights when my employer was the sole provider of piped-in satellite radio in the UP. And it was the lite-rock station. it was at the time I was convinced your average ballad songwriter was 50 times more messed up than Michael Gira.

Cecile - I have a really great Lyme specialist that I am seeing and he uses only the healthiest strongest leeches he can find in Chinatown so I am in good hands. But thank you for your concern.
Fri. 3/2/12 11:19am Really Thirsty Leeches:

But we don't have hands!
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:23am Michael Gira:

I am not insane.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:24am Ike:

Ken, you're a deeply disturbing individual. Don't ever change.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:24am Nathan:

@Cecile The worst bit is that it seems he's started exhibiting symptoms of final stage lyme disease... having broken out in a large rash of melted vinyl polyps. It's a matter of days now.
Fri. 3/2/12 11:25am tim from champaign:

@Cecile - my wife calls the lite rock ballads "victim songs" so I can see the Gira connection. She also calls lite rock "Dentist Office Rock".
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:26am Nathan:

The rash left him unable to even sit on his death bed let alone lay in it.
Fri. 3/2/12 11:26am Steve in chicago:

saw fahey play at a church in oak park IL many years ago, forgot how good he was.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:26am Cecile:

@Michael Gira, no you are definitely not. Not compared to the dudes from Ambrosia.

@Nathan, it is tragic.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:27am stefica:

"dentist office rock"~i love it!!
Fri. 3/2/12 11:28am Anger Management Psychobabbler:

Anger vents in all sorts of ways, unless it's been truly tamed. Peace out.

And pledge for good karma, any freeloaders left out there!
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:30am Ike:

Chris T. wrote a classic article about working in an office assaulted by dreadful commercial radio on Long Island, but maybe that was classic rock instead of "lite" rock. I can't remember. Can't find a link, either.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:32am adam:

wooooot

Does anyone know what 10 times high, 3 times high, twice high, etc. means when they announce pledges on JM in the AM? Might also not be high, but ch'ai or something. Just curious.

@Mike East. It's chai, which means life in Hebrew; the word's numerological value is 18. So five times chai=90.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:38am Ralphine:

Ah, found it!
http://wfmu.org/LCD/26/hateradio.html

Brilliant. Chris T. actually describes it as "top-40" but it's the same music that would be played on "lite" rock stations today.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:40am Mike East:

Thanks, ADL. I've been wondering about that all week.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:41am glenn:

chai is slang for bribes in many asian and african countries.
Fri. 3/2/12 11:41am Cash Cow Dowser:

Extend the marathon 48 little hours, till Tuesday night at midnight. Three Scharplings instead of two. Then maybe you could even skip the fall thing that you've had to start doing.

But why not just pledge $75 or more to get in the running for the Dinosaur L box set and/or the John Fahey box set!?
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:51am avant reguard:

do you have a statistical breakdown of how many people pledge and where they are located. prob would make interesting information. of the 1.2 million needed where is your largest expense coming from, particularly if you pay no rent. im genuinely curious why it costs so much every year. is it mostly to do with servers, web hostings, massive electricity bills. i know its completely legit and accounted for and i will be pledging on the yo la tengo show tonight. it just seems like a colossal amount of money to go out every year. think if you published a detailed breakdown of the costs you may even receive more pledges. anyway phew best of luck with reaching the goal and i love the wfmu.
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:58am mole:

(the secret handshake involves a 120 second full contact hug)
  Fri. 3/2/12 11:59am dave:

avant reguard, the DJs do periodically read off a breakdown of some of the bigger operating expenses. It sounds like the various costs associated with the internet streams are a pretty huge part of the costs. the costs of operating the transmitter site -- bandwidth to the tower, site rental, that sort of thing -- are not chump change either.

it's pretty stunning, really, that the station can survive on only $1.2M/year. If you compare FMU's budget to that of, say, even a smaller metropolitan NPR station, it's just mind-boggling how much the station accomplishes on what is really an infinitesimal amount of money.
  Fri. 3/2/12 12:00pm monica:

killer show today, doug!! every pledge a vote for fine ass radio for the coming year.

  Fri. 3/2/12 12:19pm Ike:

MN Jeff presumably listens only online, so he may wonder who the heck Nachum is, or what JM in the AM is. Overall the total stream split ca. 2006 was excellent, but has a strange effect on this one day per year....
Avatar    Fri. 3/2/12 12:19pm Ken:

Ahhhhhhh! $307 away!!
Avatar    Fri. 3/2/12 12:20pm Ken:

Now only $37 away!
  Fri. 3/2/12 12:20pm Hollis Frampton:

hi dave if you live on less then 10000 euro every year in total and youve been doing it for 5 years already and your say 39 now and you surmise you will live for 30 more years, if all the blood coming out of your ass radio doesnt turn out to be signs of something terminal then that amounts to 300000 euro which in dollar speak equals 400000dollars. i would never call 1.2 million dollars infinitesimal. ive been involved in pirate radio stations, community radio experiemnts, music and art collectives putting on large art festivals, costing peanuts, working in a voluntary capacity. a 15 dollar pledge in some peoples economy per capita is equivalent if not exceeding 1000 dollar pledges of other peoples wealthier income streams. Anyway ill shut up now. just wanted to say its alot of money. the US is expensive. anyway bottom line - wfmu is a great cultural and musical and educational resource.
