Listener comments!

  Tue. 2/21/12 3:03am Caryn:

Aww, kitten! Puppy! Masterful manipulation to try to get people to part with their cash!
Trying to stay awake on one hour of sleep here, so I may be listening to much of the show unconsciously...

"Don't think that I'm tight if I don't make a pledge..." - The Kinks
(Because I pledged in October and am now skint.)

Hey, Mike Noble!
  Tue. 2/21/12 3:19am bronxelf:

it's like "one bourbon, one scotch, and one beer." Only different, and george thorogood couldn't make "coke slurpee" work.

...and John Lee Hooker wouldn't even deign to try. ;-)
Tue. 2/21/12 3:25am Adam in Portland:

Tue. 2/21/12 3:31am Adam in Portland:

Ya, Julie, I obviously can't begin to posit for certain, but think you might like her songs.

Tue. 2/21/12 3:36am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi to Julie and Stan, too. I don't think Stan uses the accu-play list, so I can't congratulate him on his nice shows. I need to get some sleep now. Laters!
  Tue. 2/21/12 3:40am Dan:

Lakehouses? Maybe buy a small one.
Tue. 2/21/12 3:41am Adam in Portland:

I pledged $500 for the first time today and wish I could pledge 100 times that amount. WFMU!
Tue. 2/21/12 3:42am Adam in Portland:

I love Stan! :-))
  Tue. 2/21/12 3:43am edinblack:

This has a good solid sound!
Tue. 2/21/12 3:45am Adam in Portland:

The reissue of Meddle sounds highly remarkable.

4AD 4TW!
  Tue. 2/21/12 3:56am KP:

Stan is great. I wish he a playlist though. Incredibly dramatic, perfect for the hour. Fair and balanced. but his shows don't even appear on WFMU searches.
  Tue. 2/21/12 3:58am KP:

Good for you Adam in Portland. Once you break that $500 threshold it's like a whole new world. Sign over you life to WFMU and your cares go with it.
Tue. 2/21/12 4:00am Adam in Portland:

No play-listed shows for Stan is definitely an oversight, but also make his evanescent shows somehow that much more special. One time only.
Tue. 2/21/12 4:01am Adam in Portland:

I'm ready. I can live in pod home and bleed for WFMU. :-)
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:01am KP:

Caryn, here all day or just the shows i like?
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:03am KP:

I guess that's why he's Stan and everyone else is not.
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:06am Berg:

@Julie - done - my first pledge to an overseas radio station btw!
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:06am Julie:

  Tue. 2/21/12 4:06am KP:

  Tue. 2/21/12 4:10am ausmanx:

someone needs to tell Stan the comments list is the best place to be...
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:14am KP:

Just a song list!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:16am KP:

mike noble, just saw your tweet. hope it helps.
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:18am KP:

That pledge meter seems stuck.
Tue. 2/21/12 4:18am Adam in Portland:

Stan's comments list is written across the sidewalks of Jersey.
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:21am Caryn:

@KP: I was away for a while, and only half awake now. But we do seem to share similar DJ tastes...
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:22am KP:

And islands in Ireland.
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:25am Caryn:

Heh!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:26am KP:

Well Irene i followed here for years. Scott just a few weeks, Julie not quite a year. They seem to go together and make Monday m favorite FMU day. I work nights so and they fit my schedule as well.
Tue. 2/21/12 4:26am Adam in Portland:

I love Caryn, simply for being named Caryn.
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:27am Glovanie:

'more than you can shake a stick at' my guess is that if you feel threaten by something you would shake a stick at it to scare it away.... if its too much of a threat shaking that stick wouldn't be enough to scare it away....
that's my guess
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:28am Julie:

Good theory!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:28am Caryn:

Aww Adam, do I share my moniker with someone special to you? Or is there another reason for liking the name?
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:29am KP:

Had the greatest time at a big pub in Dingle. There was duo playing there and they ssat so close to me their knees almost touched mine. one played fiddle only. the other squeeze box and four-string banjo. Totally mesmerizing.
Tue. 2/21/12 4:33am fred von helsing:

YES
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:34am Julie:

Yes what? :)
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:38am Julie:

5 minutes to get in on the Inkubus Sukkubus. Seriously, you cannot get in this in stores except for maybe London!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:38am Caryn:

As for the "shake a stick at" thing, there are numerous theories:
-it is related to English expression "hold sticks with" (="compete on equal footing with", so that if there are more than that, you are outnumbered)
-the expression was first thought up by the Dutch, but mistranslated (Dutch verb schok = hit / shake)
-the stick is a pointer used for counting, so shaking your stick at something is counting how many of it there are (derived from counting of farm animals)
-the stick is used to threaten (like Glovanie suggested above)
-the expression refers to Native American practice of counting coup, i.e. touching as many enemies as possible during a battle
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:39am Julie:

Pointed sticks!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:41am KP:

Closing in on 50% of the goal!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:41am pierre:

Bonjour Julie !

I wanted to mae shure to be here for the beginning of the Marathon 2012 !!! JOYEUX MARATHON WFMU !!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:42am KP:

Stick with it!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:42am KP:

bonjour Pierre!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:42am Caryn:

Whew, first fact-finding mission of the day over with... But I'm sure more will turn up.
Tue. 2/21/12 4:42am Adam in Portland:

@Caryn, I just think the spelling is lovely.
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:44am KP:

hahahaha!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:44am Caryn:

@Adam: aww, thanks :)
The name and its various spellings spread across our family. Every woman on my father's side of the family has some derivative or version of the name as their first or middle name.
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:47am KP:

Thanks! A souvenir of the trip.
Tue. 2/21/12 4:48am fred von helsing:

pointed sticks OUCH !!!!!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:51am Berg:

@Julie that's right - original and new music!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:53am Caryn:

I wonder if all this will lead to Julie playing a track by Pointed Sticks. Although their music is more Terre's or Keili's bag.
But I'm tempted to just go watch the Python "Self-defense against fresh fruit" sketch after all these mentions. Yay, Eric Idle!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:54am KP:

Fifty percent or Fight!
Tue. 2/21/12 4:55am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Julie! And STAN!
This is the one fundraising marathon the listeners are EXCITED about!!
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:55am Berg:

@Julie WFMU's twitter feed is awfully quiet about the pledge drive..
  Tue. 2/21/12 4:55am Caryn:

Fifty percent or Fight with pointed sticks?
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:56am Julie:

Well at this time of night anyhow! I did say a few things today @DarkSoulNight
Tue. 2/21/12 4:57am Matt from Springfield:

That was the "Fresh Fruit" sketch of MP.
"But what if he's got a pointèd stick??"

Also acceptable is "point-ed", so long as you emphasize how it's said! :)
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:57am Julie:

50 50 50 50 c'mon folks, only $175 away
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 4:59am Julie:

Marissa Nadler followed by PIL, where ELSE you gonna get that ;)
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:00am Caryn:

@Matt: I just love the way Idle pronounces "pointed" in that sketch. Increases the fun factor.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:02am Berg:

29,295 followers for @WFMU - plenty of people out there!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:03am fred von helsing:

wasn't there a map somewhere that WFMU's worldwide cult following could pin their locations ?
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:03am Caryn:

This reminds me that while I listen to PIL occasionally, I actually don't own a single record of theirs... Need to get on that at some point.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:03am Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Yes! :)
In fact, I found something in the Grandiloquent Dictionary a long time ago, what is apparently a real word: "aichmorhabdophobia" -- fear of being attacked with a pointed stick! Someone must've made up that word from Greek after seeing that sketch!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:04am KP:

Airplane! And closing in on 50%.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:05am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: I've wondered before, was "Rise" by Public Image Ltd popular at the time, or does it just hold a place in your heart? It's got a familiar rhythm, and others on FMU have played PiL on occasion.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:06am KP:

The big 5-0!
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:07am Julie:

@Matt it was big, I remember the video..
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:07am Julie:

and yes it's one of my favorites, probably the only one not on Flowers of Romance
Tue. 2/21/12 5:07am Matt from Springfield:

@KP: Yes, it's inchin' towards Fiddy Percent!

And I totally agree w/ your comment above--once you give above $500 a year to FMU, your worries magically vanish!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:08am Caryn:

@Matt: ah yes, from the Greek aichm(o) for spear point and rhabd(o) for stick or wand... high school Greek pays off!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:08am fred von helsing:

PiL was not a big deal at the time, was it ? Maybe the closest they came to having a hit was "World Destruction" with Afrika Bambaata ?
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:08am KP:

Polite of you to answer that question, Julie. i'd ...
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:09am Julie:

@FVH It was on the heels of This is Not a Love Song, which was a hit, IIRC
Tue. 2/21/12 5:09am Matt from Springfield:

No matter what's going on with your life, you can know that WFMU is there. And that you helped make such a wonderful thing HAPPEN! :)
Tue. 2/21/12 5:10am fred von helsing:

I read a great review (in VV I think) of a PiL gig in Manhattan. They played the entire gig behind a scrim and the audience thought they had the "right" to see the band and there was a near-riot.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:10am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Much obliged, thank you!
@Caryn: Wow, high school Greek DID pay off! How long has it been since Greek was taught this side of the pond, most schools don't even require Latin anymore.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:10am KP:

PIL was huge for while. Maybe not like big time phony bands. But dominating the post punk scene. And they were on American Bandstand!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:11am Caryn:

At least over here, all 3 PIL songs so far mentioned were played a lot at the time. Don't know their chart positions, though, as I was very young then.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:11am KP:

I saw them on Staten island with mission of Burma as the opener.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:12am Matt from Springfield:

Aw man, that reminds me how I missed "the Avengers" night here... ;)
Deux freds et un pierre, IIRC!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:12am fred von helsing:

EMMA PEEL HUBBA HUBBA
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:14am KP:

Forty-eight percent!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:14am fred von helsing:

C'est vrai, Pierre était là aussi
Tue. 2/21/12 5:14am fred von helsing:

@KP yeah they were! The vid on Y00t00b is a gas.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:15am Matt from Springfield:

"You don't HAVE to kidnap a DJ"...but it sure helps! :P
Tue. 2/21/12 5:16am Matt from Springfield:

Yep. Bahss from the Netherlands!
And yes, Matt from Springfield!! (First time this marathon, I guess I'll make sure to add "Matt from Springfield, Virginia" each time.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:17am KP:

FVH. That was filmed at the old ritz, i think.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:17am Caryn:

@Matt: the Greek was actually a little addition to the Latin lessons. (a few lessons about ancient Greek to spice up the ancient Latin) But later, when I applied to study ancient literature at university, the Greek popped up again. Some of it is still lodged in the brain.
You could leave it as just Sprinfield and leave people guessing which Springfield you're from, like the Simpsons.
And now I need to check out that youtube vid of PIL on American Bandstand...
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:18am M I S T E R G A R C I A:

Listening in London I'm finding Stan to be so hilarious. I love Stan's show too. So hello Stan and Julie.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:18am Matt from Springfield:

(I'm spreading out my donation over all the shows I like this marathon, gave my listener ID instead of address)

It's not a sprint people, it's a MARATHON!
So PLEDGE EARLY! And OFTEN! (Can't get much earlier than this!)
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:19am Bas, NL:

Yeay!! Me happy!!! And about meeting.. i had lunch with DJ Keili in Amsterdam two weeks ago! It's great to have a face to the familiar voice ;)
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:19am Julie:

Bas that's great!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:20am KP:

And you get all kinds of stuff in mail so long after you pay for it it's like getting it for free. It's like a second Christmas. You owe yourself a WFMU Second Christmas!
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:20am Julie:

and she is supremely kidnappable
Tue. 2/21/12 5:21am Matt from Springfield:

Awesome Bas!!
And congrats on the Marissa Nadler win! (If it couldn't me, I know you are a very worthy candidate for it!) ;)
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:21am jay/london:

good morning all cool sounds
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:22am KP:

If you havent gotten the DJs' personal CDs they are really nice. Uniform and very professionally done. Look nice on shelf all together.
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:23am Julie:

good morning Jay!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:23am Matt from Springfield:

@KP: Yes true, even though it's taken longer for Best Show premiums to come out, it also means you'll be getting gifts long after pledging!

April/May is WFMU-Mas!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:23am fred von helsing:

"WFMU's Second Christmas: Reaching the dark parts of the soul that Santa has no clue about"
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:23am KP:

Fifty percent is within spitting distance.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:24am KP:

FVH!!!!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:24am Matt from Springfield:

Welcome Jay! Nice to see you here.
Marathons are good for seeing regular listeners in slots you don't normally see them in. Glenn was also here last year, and I think hamburger from London was here as well!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:25am Matt from Springfield:

So true FVH! :D
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:26am KP:

Tue. 2/21/12 5:31am fred von helsing:

Also a fun vid - L7 is on some Brit TV show and Dee trashes the drumkit and Donita drops trou
Tue. 2/21/12 5:33am Matt from Springfield:

Laura Nyro--bless you!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:33am Caryn:

@Matt: not just April/May. I got half of my marathon swag once about 1.5 years after the marathon. I'd completely forgotten there was still something missing, so the sudden appearance of the items was a happy mini X-mas. Still waiting for some of my October swag. It is fun when it turns up :)
Tue. 2/21/12 5:34am Matt from Springfield:

@FVH Oh yeah, I just found out L7 did crazy stuff when on TV! It was after a discussion of riot grrl and what bands were a part of that.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:37am KP:

What a great Laura Nyro song. Never heard it before.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:37am Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Wow, 1.5 years! And half your stuff, not just Best Show? Still, it is fun to know that your stuff eventually turns up, and what an unexpected joy!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:37am fred von helsing:

@matt are you on faceborg? join and post to https://www.facebook.com/groups/389879717243/ it's mainly about older stuff but I've been sneaking in riot grrl. And Sara Marcus's book is pretty good.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:38am Matt from Springfield:

NENA auf Deutsch!!! Thanks Julie, you're the only one to play great Nena cuts! Englisch und Deutsch!

Yep, Vollmond = Full Moon.
Tue. 2/21/12 5:39am fred von helsing:

Vollmond is nice but mellow, I like Tanz auf dem Vulkan
Tue. 2/21/12 5:41am Matt from Springfield:

@FVH: Ah, Female Fronted Punk 1977-1989, you've touted this before, so I finally joined just now!

Nena's done a great variety, upbeat techno dance as well as mellow. I like her balance.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:41am KP:

Yay!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:41am fred von helsing:

The English version is great, how she warbles and sorta mangles "vewwy vewwy super-scawwey"
Tue. 2/21/12 5:42am Matt from Springfield:

53%!!!
Don't stop now, but I'm so glad we're on a good track!
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:43am Julie:

just over 15 minutes guys! get me to 60 percent, if I don't have around number I won't be able to sleep :(
Tue. 2/21/12 5:44am Matt from Springfield:

Especially not a PRIME number, at that!!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:44am fred von helsing:

@matt be sure to grab the CDs, they're pretty amazing. also on youtube there's a channel by camillelan that's full of old female-fronted punk rock
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:44am KP:

Julie needs around number!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:47am KP:

Oh gawd.
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:49am Glovanie:

what's wrong with prime numbers? they're more... unique
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:50am Julie:

I think it's like $60
Tue. 2/21/12 5:50am fred von helsing:

The number 5 is PRIME! Now working on 6...
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:51am KP:

Sure that you know what to do. Pledge!
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 5:51am Julie:

3 % more!Gimme some love
Tue. 2/21/12 5:52am Matt from Springfield:

@Glovanie: But also inflexible, they won't shape into a rectangle!

53 is okay, because it looks very much like a prime number. It's obvious. I once had a routine about how the title "127 Hours" is appropriately scary; 127 doesn't look like a prime number, BUT IT IS! 100 isn't a prime, 27 isn't a prime, yet 127 IS! It sneaks up on you!! :)
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:53am KP:

Come on!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:54am fred von helsing:

@matt and it's a mersenne prime eh
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:55am KP:

Six minutes! Operators are waiting! It's a floor wax and a dessert topping!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:55am KP:

Fifty-nine!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:56am fred von helsing:

All your dark soul are belong to Julie !
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:57am Glovanie:

;D
Tue. 2/21/12 5:57am Matt from Springfield:

@FVH: You're right, not another mersenne until 8191 either!
And all our dark soul DOES belong to Julie!

@KP: Ha ha! :)
Tue. 2/21/12 5:58am Matt from Springfield:

@Glovanie: Thank you, Spring Valley, Mass.!
  Tue. 2/21/12 5:58am KP:

There's the phone!
Tue. 2/21/12 5:58am Matt from Springfield:

@Stan: I myself wish you have playlists posted, but that's the beauty of Freeform WFMU--it's all up to our DJs, no policy is going to make you do it one way or another! :)
Tue. 2/21/12 5:59am fred von helsing:

@matt Mersenne primes are intimately tied to perfect numbers. If you get my drift *cough*
  Tue. 2/21/12 6:00am KP:

Good night and good luck!
Tue. 2/21/12 6:00am Matt from Springfield:

"Is that for me, or is that for JM?---"
And we're cut off! Hopefully that person who will call back will move it up to 60%!
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 6:00am Julie:

thanks everyone! keep pledging!~
Tue. 2/21/12 6:00am fred von helsing:

another righteous show :-D
Tue. 2/21/12 6:02am Matt from Springfield:

Thank you Julie! Thank you Stan for holding the late night fort (today, and every week!)

Thanks Jeff M. and Martha for volunteering late (I THOUGHT that Jeff was Jeff M. who took my pledge!)
Tue. 2/21/12 6:02am Matt from Springfield:

And thanks to all the pledgers!
We've only just begun!!!
Tue. 2/21/12 9:04am Van in DC:

If you listen to this show backwards, it repeatedly says "PLEDGE MONEY! PLEDGE MONEY!" :)

Catching up on archive as usual...
Tue. 2/21/12 9:27am Van in DC:

Austra!! :)
Tue. 2/21/12 10:32am Van in DC:

Wow, that Emilie Simon track had me doing a "double take" aurally speaking...quite a hint of KaTe Bush in her voice there!
Tue. 2/21/12 10:55am Van in DC:

Dang it. I would have loved to have been in some of those prize giveaways.
  Tue. 2/21/12 11:11am KP:

Seventy-seven percent! Congrats.
Tue. 2/21/12 11:43am Van in DC:

Nerdkween, by the way, is Monica Arrington. And I'm certain she would LOVE to stop in WFMU and do a live set but she needs a tour van. She desperately wants to tour. Follow her on twitter @nerdkween to see how you can help her out with a simple vote every day for a short time.
Tue. 2/21/12 3:32pm Van in DC:

This was such a wonderful installment of Dark Night of the Soul, by the way. Thanks Julie!
Tue. 2/21/12 8:57pm Van in DC:

Wow. Julie's pledge meter went from 77% I think it was, earlier today, to like 0% right now....? Not sure what is going on with that...
Avatar Tue. 2/21/12 8:59pm Julie:

I think all the meters reset, so I just now entered a goal for week two.
Tue. 2/21/12 9:04pm Van in DC:

I had a pledging issue left over from October, and questions, which Joe thankfully helped me out with today, so now I can start helping out again.
  Tue. 2/21/12 9:05pm KP:

just heard about this from other "source." Had i known this was a one-week total i would not have been rooting for 50%! Same with his show today. Still you both did very well and i think the station will be happy overall.
Tue. 2/21/12 9:13pm Van in DC:

King Penguin, is that you? :)
Tue. 2/21/12 10:10pm Van in DC:

Julie, I sent in my donation. NOT my pledge...my donation. I specified a handful of shows, and donated a large amount. I hope you get your share here. I'm still uncomfortable with how wfmu does this pledging. I don't think it should be tied to any particular show, but to WFMU. Just my opinion.
