Listener comments!

ausmanx:

you gonna start doing talkback some time, Mr M? good evening, sir...
Avatar 6:23am
marty:

dont worry im here
  6:24am
Marmalade Kitty:

Hellooo!
  6:24am
Caryn:

Hello all!
  6:25am
ausmanx:

putting the evening kettle on... Earl Grey, anyone?
  6:27am
Marmalade Kitty:

Impossible to keeep still with this percussive...!
  6:29am
Marmalade Kitty:

..but I guess thats the idea, right..?!
  6:37am
Marmalade Kitty:

Caryn, I watched the apple 1984 ad, it reminded me of this one from 1989 for McEwans lager:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJJ3kki6pFc
  6:43am
Caryn:

@MK: oh man, I remember that ad too! The 80s: the heyday for dystopian advertising. I wonder who directed the ad, actually? Since this was the era when RIdley & Tony Scott, Alan Parker etc. would do TV ads.
  6:48am
Marmalade Kitty:

epic ads! I hope I'm not dropping too many brand names! Aus, point taken!
  7:07am
Marmalade Kitty:

the ad was made by the Collett Dickenson Pierce CDP agency, there seems to be an uncut version..
  7:08am
ausmanx:

you applying for a job with an advertising agency, Kitty?
  7:10am
Caryn:

There is indeed a 2-minute version, Kitty. And how the hell can I remember all the lyrics to this goddamn song?
  7:12am
Marmalade Kitty:

I was just saying the other day how much I hate marketing advertising and commercials! I'm more interested in ads from 70's 80's and from a historical perspective
  7:16am
Caryn:

The fun thing is, there are some excellent ads I can remember from years ago, but I don't think even one of them ever made me want to buy the product. So: successful in making me remember the brand name, slogan, and ad, but unsuccessful in actually getting me to buy anything, which should be main point.
  7:32am
Marmalade Kitty:

the advantages of web only ;)
  7:34am
Caryn:

McEwans ad directed by Paul Welland, who I'm not familiar with. Though the other famous McEwans ad ("The Chinheads") was directed by Steve Barron, who directed a buttload of influential music videos.
  7:34am
ausmanx:

this is the shit that should be on the superbowl halftime show... that would give folks a few heart attacks. no offensive "world peace" slogans here...
  7:37am
Marmalade Kitty:

Occupy Super Bowl
  7:37am
Caryn:

Oh yeah, MK, the Apple ad: directed by Ridley Scott.
  7:51am
ausmanx:

30 years on, Mark Stewart still sounds like the scariest man on the planet...
  7:56am
Caryn:

@MK: Collett Dickenson Pierce is the agency Alan Parker did all his ads for.

As for the Super Bowl, it's an annual exercise in disappointment (especially ever since the FCC/NFL/NBC panic over Janet Jackson) to see which inoffensive, common-denominator act they've chosen this year. I suspect Madonna is pissed she is now considered so bland that they thought she'd be a safe act. Can't think of who would be next year's act, as most of the bland acts have already performed at the Super Bowl... An Osmonds reunion? Bryan Adams? Oh wait, he's Canadian... Might create controversy for not being American enough. Thanks god Phil Collins is a no-no due to the same issue. Hmm... No, can't think of one.
  8:02am
glenn:

hey, look at all the europeans. shouldn't you guys be out rescuing greece or something?
  8:03am
ausmanx:

nah, we don't bother rescuing stuff. we leave that to Americans, since they're so good at it... Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya...
  8:04am
glenn:

don't look me, i'm a canuck. we got our problems.
  8:05am
ausmanx:

nah, you got tar sands, you got it made...
  8:07am
Caryn:

Glenn, please solve Nickelback. (and considering the amount of demands for them to play the next Super Bowl, please solve them quickly)
  8:08am
glenn:

i would happily trade every drop of oil in alberta to bring back all the jobs that have gone to china and elesewhere in the past ten years.
  8:08am
ausmanx:

your last three live sets have been damn fine, Mr M
  8:09am
glenn:

every time you buy a nickelback album, a beaver dies.
  8:10am
glenn:

happy 200th birthday, charles dickens. the world needs you now more than ever.
Avatar 8:12am
marty:

whos all checkin out the live video accompaniment????
vimeo.com...
  8:14am
Caryn:

Woohoo, Charles Dickens! They're rerunning "Bleak House" here to celebrate.
  8:16am
glenn:

is it a musical? THAT would be worth celebrating
  8:19am
Cheri Pi:

Just tuning in-this is Badass.
  8:20am
Cheri Pi:

Me-I'm checking out the live video!
  8:23am
Caryn:

Hmm, a "Bleak House" musical... Good idea. I nominate Steven Sondheim to write the songs ("Sweeney Todd" and "Assassins" show he can do the dark stuff). And I nominate Andrew Lloyd Webber to stay the hell away.
  8:58am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Just caught the last couple minutes. Have a good day.
  9:01am
Brian en Angleterre:

Caryn ALW can play the part of the House. Static with no emotional content.
  9:05am
Marmalade Kitty:

Great show, marty! Thanks
