Tue. 2/7/12 4:38am Matt from Springfield:

Tom Petty on WFMU??! Fabio must be horrified! ;)
Actually the video to this song was AWESOME, it had a Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar! Which I see, relates to the first song of the set!
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 4:39am Julie:

@Matt yes I remember it very well...came to mind this week, so had to play it
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:39am Pie:

lol yes Julie and I had talked about said video a bit the last several days
Tue. 2/7/12 4:41am Matt from Springfield:

Long live the triceratops, Julie, Fabio, and Clay Pigeon.
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:44am Marmalade kitty:

Julie, wfmu will have to introduce dj searches on the doors if you bring any more Britney Spears to the station..
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:46am Carrier:

I saw The Darkness and Foxy Shazam at Irving Plaza last night. Loved them both.
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:48am Pie:

The video for "Last Dance With Mary Jane" is another one that definitely colors your impressions of the song
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:48am Homing:

Bloodrock!
Tue. 2/7/12 4:49am Matt from Springfield:

"Ma'am, please empty your pockets of CDs and music...What's this, hidden inside your Gentle Giant box set? A Britney Spears CD??" :)
Tue. 2/7/12 4:50am Matt from Springfield:

@Homing: Clay always plays that one on Halloween, "DOA" is a great one. On SiriusXM Deep Tracks I've actually heard a few other Bloodrock tracks, so they still have some fans out there.
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:52am Marmalade kitty:

Roger Daltry has a fetish for baked beans!?
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:52am Glovanie:

ooh. Pink Floyd
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:52am KP:

The Darkness were in a Super Bowl commercial.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 4:53am Julie:

Umm..this Britney was IN the library thank you very much ;)
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 4:53am Julie:

@MK omg the beans...the beans!
Tue. 2/7/12 4:54am Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: It was apparently supposed to be John Entwhistle in the tub of beans. When he didn't show up for the photo shoot, Daltrey stepped in. John then arrived to laugh at Roger in the tub of beans!
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:54am listener mark:

It is worse then you can imagine. There is an entire shelf of Jendek CDs.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 4:54am Julie:

Ann-Margret was in the beans
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 4:55am Julie:

@Mark oh god yes
Tue. 2/7/12 4:55am Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: But, don't ask how he smelled afterwards. :)
@Pie: Never saw that video, will have to YT it.
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:55am Homing:

Wasn't Ann Margret putting a half-nelson on some weiner in that movie?
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 4:55am Julie:

And yet, speaking of beans..there is no Mexican Radio down there
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:56am Caryn:

We watched "Pink Floyd live at Pompeii" in university. Out of all the songs they did, the extended "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" is the one that sticks in the mind.
I could live with Ann-Margret in the beans, even if it was a bit weird, but the chocolate after that just looks like sludge. Ugh.
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:57am Yankee Poodle:

I love that Floyd LP with the cover shot of all their equpmwnt laid out on the road. Might be 'Meddle.' Can't remember.
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:57am Marmalade kitty:

nice one John Entwistle :) I think the beans first appeared on the who sell out lp, then in the Tommy movie, with ann Margret
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:57am Yankee Poodle:

*equipment
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:58am Stony Curtis:

I love Ann Margrock
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:59am KP:

Irene started last week's show with Rael off Who Sell Out. And Scott Williams played Quad demos today. Must be something going around Mondays.
  Tue. 2/7/12 4:59am Caryn:

@Pie: you got that right.

And I gotta say, for a while there in the late 90s, Tom Petty's videos were interesting, even if the music wasn't always great.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 4:59am Julie:

are you dandy yankee poodle?
Tue. 2/7/12 5:00am Matt from Springfield:

Nice moniker, Yankee Poodle!

(Stony = Flintstones ref, back when they started to have more celebrity cameos)
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:00am Mudcrutch:

My favorite Petty video (and song) is "You Got Lucky" with the post-apocalyptic MTV video. Kind of classic.
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:01am ausmanx:

this is the second time in recent shows we've had a long thread about Ann Margret and the baked beans... @poodle, that cover's Ummagumma, i believe
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:01am Julie:

@Aus yes I played one of hers before I think, when I saw the movie around the time of Russell's death
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:02am Julie:

li'l something coming up for the sleeping Elf
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:02am Whitman Sampler:

Russell Stover?
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:02am KP:

MFS , never heard that Daltrey story but it makes sense. He had the permed hair. He never would have agreed to do it in advance. But on the spot, what the heck. That's a good one.
Tue. 2/7/12 5:03am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Great photo btw! I don't know the context of Aubrey Plaza being a Canadian Julie, but she keeps getting funnier and funnier!
Tue. 2/7/12 5:04am Matt from Springfield:

@KP: One of the many fun anecdotes of rock 'n roll lore!
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:04am Julie:

@Matt I have no idea what that's from...but there it is.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:04am Julie:

someone get me Plaza's number she can guest DJ with me...
Tue. 2/7/12 5:05am Matt from Springfield:

I recently found a YT of her doing an impression of Sarah Silverman...if you like both Aubrey and Sarah I highly rec!
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:05am Pro Boskis:

Skin-So-Soft. You aren't thinking of it now, but when those skeeters start bitin', you'll remember.
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:06am Marmalade Kitty:

"This way to a cowboy's breakfast. Daltry rides again. Thinks: "Thanks to Heinz baked Beans every day is a super day". Those who know how many beans make five get Heinz beans inside and outside at every opportunity. Get saucy.."
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:07am Tester:

I always liked Heinz 57 better than A-1. Just saying.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:07am Julie:

these conversations are so bizarre.. I love you guys

Is Homing/Modeling really Clay Pigeon?? :)
Tue. 2/7/12 5:14am Matt from Springfield:

Ayria sounds great, 2005 but sounds distinctively 80s.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:14am Julie:

it is so hard to tell, so many people pretend to be him here
Tue. 2/7/12 5:18am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Well then at least Clay has trolls, that means you've really made it on the Internet! ;)
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:18am T-Zero:

Morning. Have been listening since the beginning but was preoccupied working on something and just now able to post. Haven't been up for your show in a while so wanted to say "HI!".
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:18am Berg:

playlist is doing wonders for the mood in my freezing parisian office - thanks!
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:19am Julie:

Hi T-zero! Good to see you
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:19am ausmanx:

doesn't FMU have a no corporate promotion policy? all this free air time for Heinz!
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:19am Julie:

@Berg that's great...I'm going to pretend I am there because the studio is super hot right now
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:20am KP:

And i thought i was the Who's Who of the Who.
Thanks. Gotta run. This is a little late for someone of My Generation.

Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:24am Julie:

Hi there G!
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:26am G:

Hey Julie. I've been enjoying more sleep. I haven't been up this late in a while. Nice to hear your music and Mr. Davies in the wee hours.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:27am Julie:

you can sleep..we are the soundtrack to your dreams...
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:28am T-Zero:

I haven't read through the comments... is that a pic of you, Julie, up top or some other Julie?
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:28am Julie:

lol it's actress Aubrey Plaza, who was in one of the films I saw at Sundance..
Tue. 2/7/12 5:29am fred von helsing:

Found: "What began as a wholesome night of watching the world's most powerful athletes try to cripple each other for personal glory and money turned into something tawdry and lewd during Madonna's halftime show when M.I.A. flipped off the camera. The NFL and NBC both apologized, but by then I was already hiding in my bathtub, hugging my knees, rocking back and forth and crying. I don’t even know who won the game."
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:29am ausmanx:

didn't madonna look a little past her prime at superbowl? and i'm sorry, but to the rest of the world some token slogan saying "world peace" at the end of her set in the most war hungry country on the planet seemed a little offensive to me...
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:30am Julie:

@FVH wha??? lewd? Tawdry? And no mention of MIA flipping the bird?
Tue. 2/7/12 5:30am Matt from Springfield:

"we are the soundtrack to your dreams"..nice one Julie!
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:30am Julie:

I think she was fabulous
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:30am Julie:

@matt or nightmares perhaps
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:31am T-Zero:

Ohhhh! Don't know of Aubrey Plaza, but cool name.

@ausmanx: I only watched a YouTube of the Madonna show, but felt she should have just bought commercial air time...
Tue. 2/7/12 5:32am Matt from Springfield:

A consensus with people I know on the halftime show was that "she was good, for Madonna..."
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:32am Dirty Elvis:

@T-Zero Aubrey Plaza is Julie's new time-travelling girl-crush
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:36am G:

I liked the trojan army wardrobe the dancers used at half time. Wish it had been a 20 year old Stevie Nicks singing though.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:37am Julie:

Well you can say most things would be improved with a 20ish Stevie
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:38am Julie:

I think if Madonna were a man people would not be talking about her age. Oh and I forgot my friend's joke, remember when Madonna & Britney kissed years ago? That's where Gaga came from
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:38am G:

Ha ha! Good one. I'm still a sucker.
Tue. 2/7/12 5:39am fred von helsing:

Then Xtina was the midwife ?
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:40am ausmanx:

well, i must say i did lament the tragic appearances of The Who and Springsteen at superbowl too, Julie. i just think it might be nice if the biggest audience on the planet could be handed over to anyone younger than 50!
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:40am Marmalade Kitty:

I wonder why they don't just get on with the football! (don't know why it's called football, the only time the ball is kicked is for a conversion point..? and the "ball looks more like a peanut than a ball..?) It's a game not a concert or a show and the commercials every time the ball goes out of play!!!
Tue. 2/7/12 5:40am Matt from Springfield:

@G: Speaking of time-travelling girl-crush, I've tried to bring 20 year old Stevie Nicks over to my place many times, haven't been successful yet. Maybe once I tweak my fluxcapacitor a bit...
Tue. 2/7/12 5:41am fred von helsing:

Wy don't they get NENA to the Stuporbowl
Tue. 2/7/12 5:41am Matt from Springfield:

NENA! Sehr schön!
Tue. 2/7/12 5:42am Matt from Springfield:

@FVH: I would LOVE that, she stills performs well. The problem is all the other Yanks would be scratching their heads and wondering "who the hell is this?" No sense in some (~98%) people!
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:42am Julie:

The Black eyed peas are younger..and they were horrible
Tue. 2/7/12 5:46am Matt from Springfield:

Hmm, is this French Coldwave or German NDW? Or other?
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:46am T-Zero:

Heh, her age had nothing to do with it for me. I wasn't a big Madonna fan even back when... Don't dislike her, just not a fan and now she just seems dated...
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:46am Julie:

no idea! found in mp3 library
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:47am Marmalade Kitty:

were commercials always such a big part of the superbowl?
Tue. 2/7/12 5:47am fred von helsing:

There's just one great M-song: BORDERLINE
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:48am Julie:

@MK it seems like they have been for a long time
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:48am T-Zero:

@MK: Pretty much...
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:48am Marmalade Kitty:

matt?
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:49am Dirty Elvis:

"Many people live in emotional darkness because they have never fully enjoyed a child spirit in their overly serious lives. The child wanders homeless in the lives of many adults, who are captivated by psychologies of the "inner child" and books and films of childlike fantasy, such as the stories of Harry Potter And the Disney movies.
"Modern society, so adult and sophisticated, so busy at work and serious about knowing everything, has lost much of its childhood. Instead of playing actively and seriously, we let other people entertain us, and instead of enjoying a strong feeling of community, we are highly dependent on our electronic connections." ~Thomas Moore
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:49am T-Zero:

@Julie: I think the media hypes them now more than anything... You know, talk'em up so their masters can keep hiking up the per second cost.
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:50am Julie:

all I saw was the Ferris one..and I liked it..because I love that movie. (would've liked to see the other two in it though)
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:50am Marmalade Kitty:

I was watching some of the U.S psa films for driving safety, OMG!
Tue. 2/7/12 5:50am Matt from Springfield:

Yes Kitty?
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:51am Caryn:

@MK: at least since the early 80s (The Apple 1984 commercial is probably the earliest example of an "event" Super Bowl ad, but there might have been earlier ones)
Tue. 2/7/12 5:51am fred von helsing:

Signal 50 !
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:52am T-Zero:

I actually should just keep quiet, as I never pay attention to football, period, or the ads....
Tue. 2/7/12 5:53am Matt from Springfield:

@MK: US road safety PSAs aren't usually as extreme as the UK, but the Drivers Ed films that they show in schools...Yeowch! Those are designed to scare high school students and keep them driving safe (for at least a few months!)
Tue. 2/7/12 5:54am fred von helsing:

gotta run to lunch... great show !! NENA 4EVA
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:54am Marmalade Kitty:

aha, I had'nt realized they were "Drivers Ed films.. the music in the films, so emo!
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:54am Caryn:

When I think of UK road safety PSAs, I keep thinking of David Prowse as the Green Cross Code man. Ah, Darth Vader telling the kids how to stay safe when walking to school...
Avatar Tue. 2/7/12 5:55am Julie:

Everybody dance now
Tue. 2/7/12 5:55am Matt from Springfield:

@MK: Much like the notorious "Apaches" film, I think intended to scare schoolchildren.
@FVH: Signal 30, produced by Ohio highway safety division in 1959.
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:56am G:

Haysi Fantayzee. One of my favorite songs. Still remember the video.
  Tue. 2/7/12 5:56am ausmanx:

Thanks for a great show Julie! I'll have to go back and check out the "Wild Honey Pie" > Icelandic "Fool On The Hill" section!

Tue. 2/7/12 12:57pm Van in DC:

Man. Matt lives just down the street from me (as it were) but I can NOT get up early enough for this show like he does! :)
Tue. 2/7/12 1:06pm Van in DC:

Don't remember hearing "The Gathering" before. I likes.
Tue. 2/7/12 2:20pm Van in DC:

The Super Bowl ad costs are linked to ratings of recent games...since it is so widely watched, they are able to charge enormous prices. Wasn't initially like that. Then when the ad prices became an annual "new high" the commercials themselves became an "event" like they are now.
Tue. 2/7/12 2:22pm Van in DC:

For the record, I think Madonna's halftime was terrific. I have no clue who the "MIA" lady is, nor anyone else that performed.
Tue. 2/7/12 2:23pm Van in DC:

Oooooh, yes....a 20ish Stevie would be awesome to have :) (She's still hot today!)
Tue. 2/7/12 2:25pm Van in DC:

@Julie - there are a lot of sites out there that have all the SB commercials... here's one

Tue. 2/7/12 3:38pm Van in DC:

I am much busier at work than before due to my coworker quitting (leaving me alone), and away from my desk much more than I was in Dallas...bits & pieces listening...looks like I will have the last 1 hr 15 minutes to finish up with tomorrow. Great show so far!
