  12:20pm
Robert:

The instrumental track of this, isolated, would sound like "We Belong".
  12:21pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hello Duane!
  12:21pm
Van in DC:

I was thinking the same thing Robert...the opening had me thinking of The Lady Rocker herself, Ms Pat Benatar
  12:23pm
Robert:

But am I correct to refer to the electronic track as "instrumental"? "Non-vocal" would cover it, I guess.
  12:24pm
joe:

Thank You Van and Robert was driving me crazy as to what that reminded me of.
  12:26pm
Robert:

And yet I can't convince people that Irwin's opening theme, "Yes, I Can, No, You Can't", sounds like the theme from "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.".

I don't recall hearing you before, Ms. Nazario, but thank you for sharing with us the records you're playing for your birthday party.

The pleasure's mine, Robert -- and welcome!

Happy late birthday, mark! (not Messier.)

Skirkie, I don't wanna fight about this.
  12:45pm
Robert:

Oh, that makes me fell soooo ooolllld! I thought I remembered his playing hockey while I was still a kid. Actually I guess it should make me feel immature, following hockey players younger than me. Remember when that happened--the sports figures you followed switched from older to you than younger?
  12:46pm
glenn:

yeah, about when i turned thirty.
  12:47pm
Van in DC:

This is my first live WFMU show in over a week. Sure have missed it.
  12:49pm
G:

Messier was big in the 80s. He was in his twenties then, 51 today.

Some careers peak in people's 50s and 60s (for ex, politics). Some peak in people's 20s and 30s (athletes). Understandable enough!
  12:49pm
Robert:

The business about being part of your birthday party reminds me of the perplexity I felt a couple of days ago. LinkedIn sent me a suggestion to link to "someone I may know" who was clerking in international law court. I look at the names and try to figure out how I'm supposed to know these people, and say, "Isn't that one a WFMU DJ?" Same name. Does LinkedIn crawl these comment lines and figure we have something in common??
  12:51pm
Robert:

BTW, It was Dan Bodah. Name slipped my mindduring my last comment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Amanda:

Dan sent me a LinkedIn invite too! He must have just joined it. It collects email addresses of everyone in your address book (lot of programs do that), so everyone you ever had email contact with gets one.
  12:54pm
Robert:

That's one of the embarrassing things about these social networking facilities that I've been cajoled into because they'll be good for my (otherwise nonexistent) career. LinkedIn makes it hard to figure out whether I already know the person I'm linking to or not. All names and faces are familiar to me by my age, whether I actually know them or not. Solicit me twice and, sure, your name is familiar to me...from your previous solicit'n.

  1:05pm
pgw in mntclr:

crazy day...i'll have to catch the full show in the archives. nevertheless, happy birthday.
  1:06pm
Robert:

You can hear the Byrds a lot and it's different because of the "Grandfather's ax" situation. You know, where the handle was changed and then the head was changed, but it's still your grandfather's ax? I went to a Byrds concert a little over a decade ago, and they were diffferent people from the musicians my friend Nadine heard at concerts decades earlier, but there's continuity of the organiz'n because they changed people like the parts of the ax, not all at the same time.
  1:09pm
ndbob:

Wait until you hit 60:)
  1:16pm
Robert:

Strange...according to http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:HzjxgScJpUUJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Byrds&hl=en&gl=us&strip=1 , that Byrds performance would've had to have been in 2000, but the one I attended at Rice Stadium doesn't seem to fit that description. I'd edit it, but I'm hazy about the details, not at all sure of the year.

Weird synergy, Joe B., I'm relieved I got to play it before you! (Or did I?) -- and joe, don't worry, you can enjoy any party even if you're late to it.
  2:00pm
Robert:

My memory's not only hazy, it resists correction. I had to look it up to be REMINDED of something I'd looked up before -- that Rice Stadium was demolished a decade earlier than I keep thinking it was. So the Byrds concert I was at had to have been no later than 1989. I got to know Nadine in 1986, so that brackets it pretty well. I think it was the summer of 1988, during the independent nominations petition period, and I must've been carrying the Libertarian Party petition for (among others) Ron Paul for president.
  2:00pm
Joe B:

I played red head walking yesterday! I do same thing at wqrong speed, starting over! Blake Babies were a very good live band, saw them do an amazing version of TV Eye, sung by John Strohm.
  2:02pm
glenn:

was ron paul insane in 1988, or is it a recent thing?
  2:04pm
Robert:

Doing further research which I probably did earlier and forgot, I see that must've been the period Gene Clark was using the Byrds name for his purposes.

Dr. Paul then was as he is now.
  2:06pm
Ike:

The Spinanes! Haven't heard them in a long time. I love the Spinanes. I think I played them on my radio show back in the dark ages of gloomy 1990s 10-watt college radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm

  2:14pm
Danne D:

@Kenzo LOVE the red cancel button by the way.

Thanks for all you do, especially for us comment critters!
  2:14pm
G:

@Danne D: Because a small fraction of 1% of the population has a degree that uses the title "doctor", mainstream people think "doctor" will impress the crap out of everyone, to the point where you are not allowed to disagree with whatever they say.

Those of us who have done nothing but hang out with people with advanced degrees our entire adult lives know full well there tons of morons and twerps who studied long enough memorizing content on one specific topic to get either an earned doctorate in something, or some other doctor type degree such as MD or JD.

This is not a slam on Ron Paul. Just an experience-based sociological observation about use of the honorific "doctor."
  2:21pm
Joe B:

@ Robert - If I recall, the drummer Michael Clarke was the one (mis)appropriating the Byrds name. Gene then joined on when the venture was not shut down right away, though I could be mistaken.
  2:22pm
Van in DC:

Yep, slacking off at work :)
  2:22pm

He's actually a medical Dr. btw. But still, it kinda grates. Romney's supporters don't call him Mr. Romney for example.

@glenn that's an old favorite joke of mine
  2:24pm

Does that make WFMU "the man"?
  2:24pm
Danne D:

We notice this stuff, Kenzo, but we don't think you enough :)
  2:24pm
Robert:

According to the accounts I've read, it's complicated -- also complicated by the fact that Gene Clark's given name was Michael!

I have a doctorate too and am sometimes known as Dr. Bob.
  2:24pm
Kenzo:

@Danne D: Kinda hysterical, to have the red cancel button appreciated, which is just a coincidental tiny artifact of a far huger change recently made but still secret/dormant. Glad there's something for someone to like in the meanwhile!

http://wfmu.org/table?period=7115
  2:26pm
Robert:

I guess my tendency is to call him -- I met him in 1988, but knew of him throughout the 80s -- "Doctor" because I was once a med student (wound up getting a Ph.D. in biochem), and I saw some more affinity with him because like my father, he was an MD from western Pennsylvania.
  2:27pm
Danne D:

@kenzo congrats on the straight feed to the CIA feature as well ;o)

@Robert you are a Dr. Bob, but not THE Dr. Bob.

G:

The preponderance of politicians have terminal law degrees or JD's, but no one calls them Doctor, Counselor, addresses mail to them as Esq., etc.

If someone's so smart, his or her ideas should stand up well without having to prop them up with constant mentions of a piece of parchment from decades ago on a perhaps non-relvant subject (M.D. <---> public policy).

joe:

@Amanda Oh I never get sick of K. Kristofferson. :)
  2:28pm
Danne D:

not so much directed at you, specifically, Robert. More just something I've observed across his followers.

Perhaps it was as commonly used as Dr. Dean but it seems like it's more often used - could just be my impression.

glenn:

and then there's the gene clark, gene parsons, gram parsons clusterfuck.

Danne D:

none of whom were a dancing machine, glenn
  2:30pm
Robert:

Ron Paul's an obs-gyn DID have something to do with his being opposed to abortions.
  2:31pm
glenn:

that's very funny, danne.
  2:32pm
Danne D:

  2:35pm
joe:

This is a pretty good book on The Byrds you can get it pretty cheap used. I just lost my copy a couple of months back in a flood http://www.amazon.com/Want-Rock-Roll-Star-Day-/dp/1906002150/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1326915255&sr=1-1

@Danne, my young escort is taking me out to a Japanese place where you take your shoes off and cook your own meat. Other than that, nothing! This!
  2:36pm
G:

Stop the presses!!! Amanda hangs out with escorts!
  2:38pm
Skirkie:

I assume you don't have to pay as much if you cook it yourself.
  2:38pm
listener james from westwood:

You get one for each year you have been alive, I think it is.
  2:39pm
glenn:

  2:42pm
Danne D:

One last Paul note - apparently he polls at 18% in a 3-way general election match-up. Interesting.
  2:42pm
Dan in Seattle:

Did you say "cook your own meat"?! Thank god you don't have to "catch your own eel." Or do you?
  2:44pm

I can hear the political operative gears turning in Danne's head from here. To add: 2000, 1992, 1968, 1912, 1860, etc. etc.

Doug S.:

Amanda is going to have SUCH a mindblowing birthday that she won't be back on the stream for two weeks! Not sure yet what will air next Wednesday...

Probably an oldie-but-goodie Nazario Scenario.
  2:54pm
Danne D:

Have a good week away Amanda - we'll miss ya.
Have a good day everybody :)
  2:54pm
glenn:

Copuntereample: 1980. If anti-incumbent feeling is strong enough on Election Day, a third party candidate is trivial, not dispositive.

joe:

Have a happy bday great show
