Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Favoriting December 22, 2011: Occupy The Holidays

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments
This program was recorded at Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan on December 2oth, 2011. It continues the recent Dusty Show series of Occupy-Based shows. On a cold afternoon as light rain fell and gathering darkness grew, I interviewed a few members of a small contingent of Occupiers around the perimeter of the park, in addition to some interested tourists and passers-by. While admittedly lacking the visceral quality of some of the heavy protest-oriented Occupy shows, I thought it might be interesting to record on a 'down day' when no call-to-action was occurring. And, of course, I was interested to see how the holidays factored in to peoples emotions and responses. I hope you'll find the exercise worthwhile.

That's it for another Dusty everyone, I hope you enjoyed it. Occupy stays alive, though quielty, for the moment. Who nows where it will go in the future. As I've said before, I'm not sure whether or not to continue weekly coverage or if I should bail momentarily. I've been playing it by ear. I find it all very interesting, though I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea. I hope you'll continue to listen. I appreciate your support and loyalty. Get in touch with your thoughts.

dusty@wfmu.org

I love to hear from you. I hope you had a nice Christmas/Hannukah, Festivus,Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Whatever! See you next time. Until then .... take care and .... always remember.

Klayy:

Hi everyone. Happy Holidays!!!
  6:09pm
phillip:

Hello kata, hello all.
  6:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Overly idealistic kid, but thank you nonetheless for featuring his opinion.
  6:11pm
phillip:

You didn't lose me.
  6:11pm
Living Doll:

If you're a kid and you're not idealistic something is wrong
  6:11pm
Adam in Portland:

Hey, Matt! Hey, Klayy, you haven't lost me. I celebrate your resolve to program your show as you see fit. These shows are fantastic.
  6:11pm
Klayy:

Hi Dan! Where is San Carlos? Hi kata - glad you're still an Occupant! Matt - you, of course, rule. Phillip - stick around. I am getting a USB turntable (I hope) for Xmas. And digital recorder. But I'll still have my analog stuff.
  6:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Old Skool Xmas WRaps!
  6:12pm
seang:

woo hoooo party time
  6:12pm
Dan from San Carlos:

Bay Area, California. Great show so far as usual.
  6:13pm
Klayy:

There's actually quite a few interviews coming up. This first one is a bit long, but I like this guy. Very nice. I'm starting to know these people.
  6:13pm
kata:

all your interviewees sound very west coast. (Notice the question marks at the end of statements !)
  6:14pm
Klayy:

Ooh, Frisco. Cool! I went to Esalen once at Big Sur. LOVE that place.
  6:15pm
Fredericks:

I would like to hear callers' comments on the segments. Tape-talk-tape.
  6:15pm
Living Doll:

Because North korea is obviously "working"
  6:16pm
Klayy:

That's a great idea, Fredericks. I'm going to try that very soon! Happy Holidays, man. Much love.
  6:17pm
phillip:

Those USB's are alot of fun Clay! Hope you do get it.
  6:18pm
Adam in Portland:

I feel sorry for this interviewee for having to take his paycheck from Clear Channel for 13 years.
  6:18pm
phillip:

Did anyone happen to see the footage from out of Syria last night on Al Jazeera?
  6:19pm
Klayy:

I need it Phillip. Trying to go from my analog turntable to my laptop had disastrous results sometimes, as happens later in this show, when I will have to bust in live for a minute to hide how bad it sounds. Also a Van Halen disaster coming up. Hey Adam. Hey Doll.
  6:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Van Halen digital disaster! That's a more typical WFMU playlist item!
  6:23pm
Adam in Portland:

Tim Hecker made a beautiful Van Halen digital disaster in Ain't Talkin' Bout Love.
  6:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Awesome, Adam!
I knew something like it must exist somewhere :)
  6:24pm
phillip:

Still keeping the analog turntable?
  6:26pm
Adam in Portland:

Glad I could help, Matt. I'm almost always impressed with his creations. Much as I am with Clay's.
  6:26pm
phillip:

I need to check that one out Adam. Everything i have heard from Tim Hecker is great.
  6:27pm
Klayy:

Has anyone else broke down crying yet over a Christmas song yet this year? I have. Certain ones slay me ... make me miss parents and grandparents long gone.
  6:28pm
Klayy:

Sorry for the double 'yets'.
  6:28pm
kata:

Clay, I pass you a digital tissue ;)
  6:29pm
Adam in Portland:

You're welcome, Phillip. It might be a bit of a challenge to track down, but I know Aquarius Records' online site has some sound samples, as a start.
  6:29pm
Klayy:

TY Kata. snif
  6:31pm
kata:

did he say "America is naked"? that is awesome!
  6:31pm
Adam in Portland:

I recently lost my voicemail that contained my last message from my grandmother who died in October. It has broken me a little bit. I just repeat her words "Goodbye, Honey" in my head in her voice as best I can. It is a struggle, but I keep trying to do it.
  6:32pm
Julie:

@Adam I still have my mom on my answering machine after 8 years. don't know how to get it off of there to save
  6:32pm
Fredericks:

"That's a great idea, Fredericks. I'm going to try that very soon! Happy Holidays, man. Much love." Please do, Clayton.
Happy Holidays back at cha.
  6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sorry to hear that Adam, I've lost certain messages I wanted to keep before, but never a last message like that. I'm sure you'll always keep her in your heart.
  6:33pm
phillip:

I couldn't help but breakout "Christmas With Mcgriff", by Jimmy Mcgriff. Excellent Hammond B3 work on that one.
  6:34pm
Klayy:

Adam, I relate. In 1999, I said goodbye to my grandma as I shut her nursing room door, and she said 'goodbye, honey.' I knew it was the last time I would see her alive, and it was. BUT ... I can hear her voice plain as day in my mind, and that's all that matters.
  6:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Digital voice recorder, speaker to mic. If any component of your machine has an 1/8" plug, you may be able to record directly into another source.
  6:34pm
Adam in Portland:

Julie, I love that! Buy a micro-cassette recorder and tape it. I'm sorry I didn't.
  6:35pm
Klayy:

Julie! happy Holidays!
  6:35pm
david:

poor Noriega... schooled by the School of Americas...
  6:35pm
Adam in Portland:

Also, as my radio wave friends, I love you and Clay. :-)
  6:35pm
Klayy:

This Kate Smith tune got to me today . I was tearing up.
  6:36pm
kata:

Oh this song is getting to me too!
  6:38pm
Julie:

Happy Holidays, Klayy! I've done a quiet Manhattan xmas, kind of envy you. Tell the missus Merry Christmas for me too :)
  6:38pm
Adam in Portland:

Thank you, Clay and Matt, for your kind words. It means a lot.
  6:39pm
Klayy:

Julie, we need a Triumvirate duel! Soon!
  6:41pm
Julie:

Klayy, you know how to find me! Just flash the upside down bat signal
  6:41pm
Klayy:

hahahaaa
  6:42pm
Adam in Portland:

I would love to hear another triumvirate show. Also, I'm crossing my fingers that during the pledge drive this year Fabio and Three-Eyed Vance will be paired up together. That would be either great or disastrous radio. But, absolutely memorable. Haha.
  6:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Occupy Profiles"--if you're going to have callers comment on interviewees, do two long interviews like Jesus and "idealistic kid", and have calls and discussion after each. Lot of good discussion points today (but we always have the comment board!!!)
  6:42pm
Hacksaw:

Leroy Anderson!!!
  6:43pm
david:

lol Herman Cain and Sleigh Ride
  6:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sweet hay-soos, was that Mr. Cain quoting from the Pokemon movie?? WTF LOL!
  6:44pm
Julie:

umm wait..what was that??
  6:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Adam: I want a good Triumvirate show soon too! Chats/calls and DJ battles periodically, at least a few times a year!

Clay's a huge fan of Stan, it would be interesting to hear them together.
  6:46pm
Listener Dave From Seattle:

I wouldn't mind a Clay/Night People mashup either.
  6:46pm
Klayy:

Hello Hacksaw and David! Yes, that was from cain's 'dropping out speech. Yes, Stan is legendary. A hero of mine.
  6:47pm
Klayy:

Cain .... capitalized. Sorry, Herm.
  6:48pm
Julie:

The mark of Cain?
  6:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Evan "Funk" Davies and Joe McGasko would make a great pairing, but they're such big 70s fans you wonder if they would come to fisticuffs, over whether Jo Jo Gunne or solo Jay Ferguson is better!! :)
  6:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ram On, give your heart to somebody...
  6:49pm
Listener Dave From Seattle:

Co-Cain
  6:50pm
kata:

aw, I love the Beatles
  6:50pm
Julie:

Cain is not able
  6:50pm
Klayy:

Ooh, this Partridge Family sounds so distort-o. Killin' me.
  6:50pm
Adam in Portland:

Clay and Stan would be a blast. Like Philthy Animal Taylor and Lee Scratch Perry being thrown together.
  6:51pm
Hacksaw:

surprised "I Believe in Father Christmas" hasn't made an appearance
  6:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kata: And I love their Christmas song! Their Christmas fan club flexi-disc from 1967, their best one! If you can check out their Xmas records 1965-1967, those are the best ones.
  6:52pm
Klayy:

I did a Marathon with Stan on his show a couple of years back. It was a blast.
  6:53pm
Julie:

there was a link to those on the blog recently, the beatle flexis
  6:53pm
kata:

@Matt do you have the BBC sessions double disc with outtakes and radio messages? I adore it !
  6:53pm
glenn:

claaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
  6:53pm
Julie:

I wanna be on with Keili again. That was fun with her during Irene.
  6:53pm
Adam in Portland:

Klayy, I'm sorry I missed that. I love Stan's laugh.
  6:54pm
Klayy:

Glennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!
  6:54pm
glenn:

and julie, also. merry w.t.f.mas.
  6:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kata No but my Dad's had that for years--I love the banter, silly takes and R&B songs they didn't release on record!
  6:55pm
Julie:

@Glenn thank you :)
  6:55pm
420 Baby:

it only feels like a week. She's actually only been there for a few minutes.
  6:56pm
Klayy:

Well, Andy will be here soon. THANK YOU ALL for your continued support. You are the best. I hope you all have a Happy Holiday Season and that you'll keep tuning in. We are the 99%. Until the next time ... take care and ... always remember!
