Listener comments!

  Tue. 11/8/11 3:04am other david:

howdy Julie & listeners!

this is a deliciously goth start to my birthday :)
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:06am T-Zero:

Happy birthday, other.
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:06am Julie:

David! Happy Birthday! Any requests?
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:06am Marmalade Kitty:

Morning Julie!

Happy Birthday O'David!
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:11am Marmalade Kitty:

I was going to request the Kinks for David :)
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:12am other david:

Cheers folks!

Julie - my brain hasn't gotten into gear yet, just do your usual awesome show :)
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:14am fred:

Good morning Julie and listeners
Happy birthday David!
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:17am Julie:

Hello David, Fred, MK & T-Zero
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:20am T-Zero:

Morning, Julie.
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:31am Sam:

This rocks!
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:32am Marmalade Kitty:

this Black & White sounds a little lke a-ha..
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:33am Julie:

Oh saying someone sounds like Aha is not a compliment! I'm trying to get them on the show actually.
Tue. 11/8/11 3:34am Brick Van Dee:

Hello from the dark recesses of Merton Civic Centre, South West London!
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:34am Marmalade Kitty:

I love a-ha! seriously
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:35am Julie:

Howdy Brick! and Sam!
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:37am Sam:

Hi Julie, I'm definitely in the mood for your show.
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:37am Julie:

Hmmm Sam I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing!
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:40am T-Zero:

I never really go into them (A-Ha) much.
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:42am Julie:

I think they were cool for about five minutes..and then it was like enough already with Take on Me
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:43am T-Zero:

Yeah. That first album is the only one I have, and never really played it much.
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:46am Sam:

It's a bad thing - I'm having a total dark night of the soul. But that's why you're there. So the fact that your show is on is a good thing.
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:50am Marmalade Kitty:

thats an accurate assessment TZ, there are 5 or 6 good songs in a-ha discography.. the rest is too much for me. very cheezy.
Tue. 11/8/11 3:54am Brick Van Dee:

Vegetable Man. This song sounds like how I feel!
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:55am Marmalade Kitty:

bad wardrobe day syd?
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:55am Julie:

Ha, did you guys hear a lot of noise just then?
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:56am Julie:

I'm having an I don't know what I'm doing kind of night
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:56am Julie:

Hope i didn't wreck the song
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:56am Sam:

Sometimes I feel like a vegetable man, and sometimes like a jeune gen moderne. Or both.
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:57am Sam:

The song was fine, lots of echo, just perfect
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:57am Marmalade Kitty:

what happened? didn't notice anything..
  Tue. 11/8/11 3:58am Dirty Elvis:

Greetings from the People's Republic Of Cambridge, MA ;-)
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:00am Julie:

Hiya Dirty Elvis! @MK I left the Mic on..you probably heard buttons and stuff, but I bet they fit right in with Syd
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:00am Julie:

Projektfest is happening in cambridge next week!
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:00am Sam:

Cambridge! You crazy commie hippie! :)
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:01am Dirty Elvis:

Projekfest?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:02am Julie:

Darkwave concert, put on by Projekt Label with Black tape for a blue girl and other bands
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:02am Julie:

middle east
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:05am Dirty Elvis:

Oh cool....sounded like some kind of pseudo-Russian graffiti contest lol
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:06am Julie:

@DE that sounds good too! Did my playlist disappear for anyone else?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:07am Sam:

I LOVE the middle east! I used to go there all the time, especially for their lunch specials
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:08am other david:

Julie - all working fine here, loving this set
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:09am Julie:

it was weird it all vanished for a moment there. @OD thank you!
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:09am ausmanx:

i'm getting very confused... isn't the middle east the place where there's lots of sand and camels and stuff, and cambridge the place where there's an old university and lots of spies?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:10am Dirty Elvis:

Shhhh...you'll blow my cover
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:11am Sam:

The mIddle east is a bar/restaurant/concert venue in Cambridge. I highly recommend it, the food is very good and not expensive, they have a great beer selection and a very cool vibe.
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:12am Julie:

I believe the show is in the basement, so who knows what that's like. Sure, stick the goths in the basement.
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:13am Sam:

I think Mariah Carey should cover this Trois Vierges. She could make it super shlocky.
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:13am ausmanx:

bit too far to go from Sydney, even if inexpensive. actually, the real Middle East is probably cheaper...
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:14am Sam:

The real middle east is closer to sydney too
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:14am Julie:

Aha? Mariah Carey? What's going on tonight
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:15am Sam:

Youuuuu got me feelin' emotions!!!
Aaaahhhhh!!
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:16am Dirty Elvis:

I dunno but I think my cat likes your show, Julie. He's rubbing his head all over the monitor and purring up a storm....
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:17am Sam:

This is definitely a cat show
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:18am other david:

Elvis - is it a black cat, perchance?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:18am Julie:

Aww that's cute
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:19am Dirty Elvis:

Nope, kinda yellow/orange-ish...his name's Eggyolk
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:22am Julie:

@sam this one oughta get to ya
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:22am T-Zero:

Do you just call him yoke?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:23am T-Zero:

errr yolk
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:25am Dirty Elvis:

Nah that's too ghetto
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:27am Sam:

Yes, nice and dark, thank you.
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:31am Dirty Elvis:

Say Julie...whadaya think about the Boston Phoenix referring to Jim Morrison one of the forefathers of goth?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:34am Julie:

@DE Yep I can see that. I play the Doors a lot. Didn't bring any tonight
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:35am Julie:

Although if someone has a Doors song they want to hear. I do have my hard drive with me
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:48am Marmalade Kitty:

do you have the doors - winter time love to be?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:53am other david:

This Rough Trade comp is probably my favourite of all time!
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:54am Marmalade Kitty:

is it expensive to fly to Bermuda from NY for holiday?
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:55am Marmalade Kitty:

just seen a most beautiful beach! pink sand
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:56am other david:

Dark Night of the Soul Listener Meetup, Bermuda
  Tue. 11/8/11 4:56am Julie:

Never been to Bermuda! Sounds nice though.
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:00am other david:

I would melt over there, I've actually been in better form after we got the first autumn frost a couple of days back. I love cold, but bright weather :)
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:00am Marmalade Kitty:

that would be something else! :)
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:03am Julie:

Awfully chipper for a meet up for my show. Perhaps someplace in Eastern Europe
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:06am Marmalade Kitty:

China Crisis! Eastern Europe? Czech Prague?
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:07am Dirty Elvis:

East Somerville?
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:08am Sam:

How about Arkhangelsk, an industrial Russian city on the Arctic Ocean coast.
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:10am other david:

Sam - you read my mind, it has to be the Arctic in Winter :)
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:13am Julie:

brrrrrrrrr
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:13am Julie:

I watched this Buster Keaton movie over the weekend, and where he is there's a sign that says "North Pole 5 miles south" or some such thing
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:14am Sam:

Seriously I've always thought Arkhangelsk would be a wacked out place to live.
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:15am Dirty Elvis:

Does a dark night need be cold?
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:15am Sam:

Whenever people get lost and stop at Santa's workshop for directions, he always tells them "Head south..."
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:16am ausmanx:

i propose a meet up in Broome, the most remote town in the world, and consistently 110 degrees every day in november... i'm going there next week!
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:16am Sam:

You're right, Egg Yolk's companion, a dark night need not be cold. My favorite are warm rainy nights with lots of fog.
Tue. 11/8/11 5:16am Matt from Springfield:

Morning Julie! Morning everyone!
How about Slovenia for a meetup? Still Eastern Euro, nice architecture and friendly people during the day, dark atmosphere at night! Or similarly Prague, as MK said.
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:17am Julie:

Morning Matt! I've always wanted to go to Prague
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:18am Julie:

110 degrees? YUCK
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:20am ausmanx:

yeah. i know, i actually prefer cold too. but it is one of the most amazing places on the planet... no robyn hitchcock tonight, Miss J? you've got me listening to him in the car at the moment...
Tue. 11/8/11 5:20am Matt from Springfield:

@ausmanx: I've heard of Broome! But they have an airport, and tourists travelling the beach on camels, that's not remote! :P

How about a dry lakebed in the WA desert, Lake Disappointment? ;)
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:21am T-Zero:

I suppose Transylvania in Romania would be too cliché
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:22am Julie:

Aus you're listening to him RIGHT NOW?
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:22am Dirty Elvis:

"....and the blues will make you happy too."
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:23am Julie:

I will try to get some Hitchcock in
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:23am Marmalade Kitty:

places in a hat..
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:23am ausmanx:

oh, it's remote. you'll see on the map where the nearest town is. we're driving there from Darwin along the Gibb River. it takes a week. if only small places are remote, we got stranded 3 nights in William Creek last year... population 3 (the couple who own the pub, and Trevor with the plane)... ! that's on the Oodnadatta Track...
Tue. 11/8/11 5:30am Matt from Springfield:

Yes! Donovan!
And you're having mint juleps with him too! :)
Tue. 11/8/11 5:32am Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, unreleased Donovan comp. Is that a new release? This sounds like his early folk, mid-60s stuff, but his vocal sounds more "grown up", like late 60s/early 70s.
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:32am Julie:

I don't think it's an official release
Tue. 11/8/11 5:33am Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: Great suggestion! Especially for autumn--and harpsichord!!
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:33am Marmalade Kitty:

I love this doors track, underrated :)
Tue. 11/8/11 5:34am Matt from Springfield:

Wake up everyone, the Strawberry Alarm Clock's going off!
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:34am other david:

haha, Strawberry Alarm Clock!! This is unexpected

*dances*
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:36am jamesie:

I was ill with flu iu, my sister who worked for UNI records in Park Lane London brought me home a pile of 45's including Incense and Peppermints. I played it a lot, didnt really like it at the time as it seemed too 'cute' even though I was 12 at the time. I like it now.
Tue. 11/8/11 5:37am Matt from Springfield:

As a kid my Dad described as "psychedelic" songs as this one, and Tommy James "Crimson and Clover" when they were on the radio--so those were the first two psychedelic songs that were defined for me. Really psych pop, but I still love both those songs.
Tue. 11/8/11 5:38am Matt from Springfield:

Wow, there was a band called The Druids of Stonehenge.

"No one knows, who they were...or, what they were doing..." !!! :)
Tue. 11/8/11 5:39am Matt from Springfield:

"Course were NOT doing bloody Stonehenge!!!"
Tue. 11/8/11 5:41am Matt from Springfield:

This is LOVERLY! Never heard of The Elastik Band.
"They were one of the exponents of the UK psychedelic rock scene from the late 60’s and featured Andy Scott who would go on to become guitarist with Sweet."
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:42am Julie:

The hits and nothing but the hits
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:43am simon:

this song makes me buzz with happiness
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:44am other david:

Julie - what brought this on? :)

I love the random jumps in style between sets, keeps us guessing
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:44am Julie:

Get ready for a major detour
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:44am Dirty Elvis:

"No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn...."
Tue. 11/8/11 5:44am Matt from Springfield:

I just ordered 3 Beach Boys psychedelic era CDs, have really discovered and enjoyed them the past week.
Tue. 11/8/11 5:47am Matt from Springfield:

The Smile Sessions is coming out soon--5 CDs of artyfacts of the original attempt to record Smile. For Brian Wilson completists! (The original attempt at "Heroes and Villains" is on my CD--if that's any indication Smile prob would have been "ahead" of Sgt. Pepper's).
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:47am Marmalade Kitty:

did you get wild honey, Matt?
Tue. 11/8/11 5:50am Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: Yes! Smiley Smile/Wild Honey! Friends / 20/20 and Sunflower/Surf's Up.

Friends / 20/20 are my fav two, but Wild Honey is a great, more soulful album. "Aren't You Glad" makes me think of it as the early version of Madness' "It Must Be Love".
Tue. 11/8/11 5:53am Matt from Springfield:

Yeah! Sweet wine sounds great about now...
Tue. 11/8/11 5:55am Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: Oh by the way, sorry if I embarassed you by publicly asking if you were in a band, "playing Everton"--I had missed an earlier comment about football clubs!

Or maybe it's a natural consequence of having sweet wine for breakfast ;)
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:55am other david:

Have to split, it was a great show Julie - feel like I can just about face the day ahead now :)

Cya folks, hope you have a great day
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:56am Julie:

Almost out of here, thanks for listening guys!
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:56am Julie:

Happy Birthday!
Tue. 11/8/11 5:57am Matt from Springfield:

Marc Bolan, riding unicorns right now while singing...

Have a good day, other david! And happy birthday!
Tue. 11/8/11 5:59am Matt from Springfield:

Thank you Julie! A nice show of relaxed album tracks tonight!

Have a good day everyone!
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:59am Marmalade Kitty:

why would i be embaressed matt, course not..Robyn Hitchcock in The Bones in the Ground song definitely sounds like S. barrett!
  Tue. 11/8/11 5:59am Dirty Elvis:

Goodnight & good morning Julie ;-)
  Tue. 11/8/11 6:00am Sam:

Have a good day/night, may the darkness be with you.
  Tue. 11/8/11 6:00am Marmalade Kitty:

Great show Julie! :)
Tue. 11/8/11 6:01am Matt from Springfield:

@MKitty: That's a great song, "Bones In The Ground". Great imagery, don't know quite what it reminds me of...
Tue. 11/8/11 12:09pm Van in Dallas:

Once again, thank you magical WFMU archive genie! Have made it almost through set 2, and feel almost like Julie put that entire set together just for me :) I am LOVING this previously undiscovered "Lacrimosa" ...this "Kyrie" is almost epic and grandeur, and has such lovely long sweeping orchestrations! Julie, I think you KNEW I was going to love this one, knowing of my musical tastes that range from darkwave & punk to classical and so much more :) Still enjoying this presentation...will pause soon for lunch and restart with this Kyrie for a re-listen!
Tue. 11/8/11 1:38pm Van in Dallas:

By the way, Happy Birthday to Other David!
Tue. 11/8/11 2:15pm Van in Dallas:

Fabulous twists & turns. Another solid effort! Many thanks Julie!
