Sun. 10/23/11 12:25am
Lisa in Tampa:
Love you, Joe, and WFMU, and Bill Withers!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:27am
Joe McG:
Thanks, Lisa in Tampa! What a nice way to start off my comments board tonight.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:35am
Lisa in Tampa:
I hope your other listeners are able to cough it up for you. The $$, I mean.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:41am
Julie:
Battery of songland? Did it always say that?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:42am
Joe McG:
@Lisa: I wouldn't mind! I'm supposed to get to 100 percent by the end of this month and I only have this week and next week to do it. Up to 75% would be cool.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:43am
david:
nice sounds, mr. mcg. | |
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:44am
Julie:
Sitting on a red hot stove would hurt like hell. what are these people thinking?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:46am
Joe McG:
@Julie: Yeah, it's been the battery of songland for a while! Nice Kinks special the other night, BTW. @David: Thanks, man!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:47am
Julie:
Thank you! it was so much fun, and really hard to whittle down to three hours. I could do a month of shows on them.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:52am
Joe McG:
Yeah, they've got so much great stuff. You really covered a lot of bases.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 12:59am
david:
whoa, the bass modulated 1/2 step up for part of "Mary Anne"
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:01am
Joe McG:
And the drums fell apart near the end!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:13am
Matt from Springfield:
Hey there Joe! What's all this about sittin' on a red hot stove? :)
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:15am
Joe McG:
It seems to be the "hot" topic tonight!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:16am
Matt from Springfield:
Also, didn't realize Norman Whitfield wrote the "Car Wash" soundtrack. Did he write all the songs?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:20am
Joe McG:
@Matt: Yeah, he wrote the whole thing. Well, except for the Richard Pryor dialogue.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:21am
Matt from Springfield:
Well, obviously THAT part was Paul Mooney ;)
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:24am
Joe McG:
Obviously, ha ha! | |
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:27am
david:
brilliant stuff- that patio set almost approached post-punk at the end there.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:29am
Joe B:
Just tuned in but I keep hearing strange abstract Athens Georgia undertones in several songs. Anyone know that the dB's are touring and their new song at thedbs.com ?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:33am
Joe McG:
Cool! I saw Evan posted that on the ol' FB.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:36am
Matt from Springfield:
Gotta admit...that was the coolest thing I ever heard by the Greg Kihn Band!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:36am
Matt from Springfield:
Awwww, what was wrong with that 33??! :D
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:38am
Joe McG:
Ha ha, Matt, I knew you'd want me to stick with it. But it's the Undertones! It's got to be fast.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:38am
david:
+1 MFS - now I want it at 33 in addition to 45 :)
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:39am
Joe McG:
OK, I promise I'll play it at 33 after the set! I'm a people pleaser.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:39am
Matt from Springfield:
It's OK Joe, I'll hold you to it on account of "Single File" -- things should be either 45 or 7" there. But david has a point 'bout playing it later! :)
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:40am
Matt from Springfield:
And "Town Called Malice"! Love The Jam, but have I talked before about them lifting the keyboard and rhythm from The Rascals "Good Lovin"?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:41am
Matt from Springfield:
And if you're still there Julie, The Jam even played something that sounded JUST LIKE "David Watts"!! :)
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:41am
Joe McG:
@Matt: Yes, "Town Called Malice" is a clear Motown lift from "You Can't Hurry Love." With bedsit lyrics.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:43am
Matt from Springfield:
Wow, you're right about "You Can't Hurry Love"--have to make an instro version later and compare them. Clarence does a great scream there!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:45am
12539:
What about those of us who want to hear the Undertones at 78?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:46am
Joe McG:
OK, 12539: Ask and ye shall receive...
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:51am
Matt from Springfield:
Nice reggae. "The bed's too big" and "the frying pan's too wide"...
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:52am
Joe McG:
I think it's interesting to hear a real reggae singer do the Police's "white reggae."
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:53am
Matt from Springfield:
Yeah! Disco novelty! I always think of Zappa's "Dancin' Fool" on that subject. Or, Kermit the Frog's "Disco Frog"...Cookie Monster's "Me Left Me Cookie At The Disco"...
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:54am
Joe McG:
I have that Zappa 45! Didn't think of it. Maybe a future set!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:56am
Matt from Springfield:
Promising! Try to mix it in with real disco, just like now!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 1:57am
Joe McG:
Steve Dahl deserves it! This is a great record!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:06am
Matt from Springfield:
Thank yous much, Joe! That intro, makes you think this IS the proper speed!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:06am
Brian in UK:
Mornin' Joe & everyone. If your're playing the Undertones it takes a positve touch!!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:06am
Joe McG:
@Brian: Well done! :) | |
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:08am
Colm:
Hey Joe, Mickey Bradley (the Undertones) has a punk rock show on radio Ulster you should check it out
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:08am
12539:
"But it's the Undertones! It's got to be fast."
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:09am
Mary Wing:
Now play it BACKWARDS! | |
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:09am
Matt from Springfield:
Crazy! Like when I've doubled the speed on something twice! :D Thanks for the suggestion david!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:12am
Joe McG:
Linger Lumps! Linger Lumps!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:12am
Matt from Springfield:
Thanks for that idea Mary! Introducing the world to classic three-chord Danish punk! "Lenge Raumst! Lenge Raumst!"
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:15am
Julie:
@Matt I've played the Jam's David Watts :)
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:19am
Julie:
Singles! | |
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:21am
Matt from Springfield:
@Julie Oh, I know! I likewise enjoyed your Kinksfest! Actually The Jam version was a nice tribute to the orig--I brought that up because we were talking about The Jam ripping off 60s songs for "Town Called Malice".
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:21am
Julie:
you have a Tyrannosaurus Rex 45?? I'm so jealous.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:22am
Julie:
it is very true to the original
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:26am
Brian in UK:
Listening to Bert & watching the Malaysian bike GP. Lazy start to the day. Drinking tea.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:30am
Matt from Springfield:
@Brian: What a nice, lazy, UK start to a Sunday! What blend of tea?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:32am
Brian in UK:
Ceylon. Good 'n strong.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:35am
Matt from Springfield:
Lovely! (inhales imaginary, steaming whiff of a hot cuppa Ceylon)
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:39am
Brian in UK:
They serve it with warm milk over in Sri Lanka. Could take to be there now, Matt.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:42am
Brian in UK:
Willy O Winsbury? | |
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:42am
Matt from Springfield:
Don't have bags of Ceylon with me--when it gets cold out I'll have to order some that way at a cafe, get transported to Sri Lanka. I enjoyed fruit flavored and very green teas last year in Thailand--that and mangosteen fruit is a quick simple way of transporting me back there.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:46am
Brian in UK:
The only down side is the milk tastes like powdered not fresh, no surprise really.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:46am
Matt from Springfield:
Gorgeous "No Love Is Sorrow"!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:48am
Matt from Springfield:
I've noticed that milk (and coffee) is often powdered in the more touristy spots of South Asia. I suppose the working classes also drink them like that at home.
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:52am
Brian in UK:
Have you seen the state of the cows over there?
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:56am
Matt from Springfield:
True, Brian, true. The largest they have are water buffalo, and they work them very hard!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:58am
Matt from Springfield:
Awesome Single File! And nice Bert tribute! Thanks Joe and good night! Brian! Julie! Anyone else listening!
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:58am
Brian in UK:
Byeeee | |
|
Sun. 10/23/11 2:59am
Joe McG:
