tahomajohn:
Tony, I have some relatives fresh in town from Switzerland who are punky garage/grungers and are heading down to Portland for the day... any place down there they should not miss this afternoon...?
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:15pm
tonyc:
Well, I can recommend two record stores for them: Green Noise and Discouraged. Don't know what else punks do in the afternoon....
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:16pm
tahomajohn:
awesome.. they are record collectors so i well give them the info...cheers!:)
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:19pm
Ricardo Montalban:
2nd Avenue Records on the west side of Portland used to be great for punk, garage and rock, but I haven't been there for years.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:20pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Tony, where is Green Noise?
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:21pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I like Exiled on Hawthorne and Sonic Recollections on Belmont, but they don't get a lot of records very frequently. I hit them once a month or so.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:24pm
marcury:
Hey Tony, good to have you back.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:25pm
tonyc:
Green Noise is at 2615 SE Clinton St. Exiled and Crossroads are my faves, but not necessarily the best for punk. Hey Marcury!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:27pm
tahomajohn:
Hey, those clever Swissters already had Green Noise on their list for places to check out! But they will also give a look at these other locs... Thanks for the info, Tony and Ric :)
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:27pm
Carmichael:
Hey Tony. Hey everyone.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:29pm
tonyc:
R. Stevie Moore plays at Holocene here in Portland this Wednesday: http://www.holocene.org/calendar/ I'm going!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:29pm
tonyc:
Heya, Carmichael! | |
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:30pm
Ricardo Montalban:
WOO! Stevie! I don't know how I missed Daniel Johnston last week! I ended up hearing about it from the IT guy at work, who I didn't think was into that kind of thing...
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:31pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Oh, Green Noise used to be Quality Records, I think. That shop has changed names so many times, I can't count it.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:32pm
tonyc:
Missed Daniel Johnston myself, unfortunately....
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:33pm
Ricardo Montalban:
There's a big record and book sale on the 10th on Hawthorne, at the Eagles Lodge.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:33pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I will be DJing there around noonish, I think
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:35pm
tonyc:
What I need right now are record shelves, not records. Was forced to put 10 boxes or LPs in the closet, which pains me.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:36pm
tonyc:
But thanks for the tip -- I'm sure I'll show up anyhow!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:43pm
tonyc:
This band Doll was based right near where I used to live in Brooklyn, but no ever heard of 'em, seemingly.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:49pm
iker:
wow, the mighty Makers of the Dead!!!... i was recently told by Mitch at M Squared that they're currently working on a new double-disc Makers anthology. looking forward to it!!!!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:51pm
tonyc:
Yes, I love the Makers of the Dead for sure. My favorite Australian band, though I think I may like the Systematics almost as much.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:53pm
Doug S.:
I rather like this. Makes me want to ride a horse.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:54pm
Conrad:
Kenny G put up an excellent '80s Michael Nyman album up on Ubuweb.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:54pm
tonyc:
Yep -- there are train songs, car songs -- and horse songs.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:54pm
iker:
indeed. i also love Ya Ya Choral. M Squared released very good stuff indeed.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 12:58pm
tonyc:
Conrad: Will investigate.... Iker: Haven't heard too much Ya Ya Choral -- but since they're post-Systematics, I'm sure I'd dig 'em.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:03pm
Ike:
Hello! Just in. Late due to PATH train hijinks! Please don't flog me. Hey, that Michael Nyman was something ELSE. Even after all this time, you can surprise me, Tony.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:05pm
iker:
i'm sure you'll like Ya Ya Choral, Tony. they were poppier than the Systematics (wierdly pop, anyway). most of their songs are in the great M Squared "Terrace Industry" boxset that came out last year.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:05pm
tonyc:
Hello there, Ike! | |
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:10pm
tonyc:
IKer: Thanks for the tip. I've got the Vinyl on Demand M Squared box, which is excellent, but Ya Ya-less.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:14pm
tonyc:
And Ike: Doug handles the flogging, not me.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:19pm
Doug S.:
Ike, please place your left duodenum on the block and look away.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:20pm
BSI:
Duodenum? I never even met 'em!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:21pm
mark:
Love this Tirez Tirez stuff. Including track on your dj premium. Channeling Brian Ferry.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:23pm
tonyc:
Mark: The track on my comp is the flip of the song I just played. Definitely channeling Bryan Ferry!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:28pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Is Mirrors the Cleveland band?
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:29pm
vcs3:
CLE & EUROCK-Great Mags
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:30pm
Ricardo Montalban:
So many 70's underground bands sounded like Bryan Ferry. Also, so many would-be rock stars sounded like Bowie, to me.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:33pm
tonyc:
Iker: Hope I didn't mangle the pronunciation of your name too horribly! And thanks for the Peep Show interview -- I'm looking forward to reading it. (Iker published a great Spanish music magazine called Morning -- after this song?)
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:33pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Been running into lots of Roderick Falconer records lately. He probably would've been a slightly larger rock star in an adjoining reality plane.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:34pm
iker:
ooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh... thank you, Tony. i'm so delighted you liked the Peep Show.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:34pm
tonyc:
Mr. Montalban: Yep, Mirrors are the Cleveland band
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:36pm
iker:
no prob about the name pronunciation, Tony. it's actually something more like "eeker"... :-)
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:37pm
tonyc:
Iker: Oops -- sorry. Ricardo M: Who, pray tell, is Roderick Falconer?
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:40pm
listener james from westwood:
just back in the house for the tail end; will be grabbing the archive as soon as it hits the server. glad you're back and spinnin'!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 1:42pm
tonyc:
Thanks, James! Glad you made it....
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:02pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Roderick was a sort of contender for the Bowie crown. an american rock songwriter, smartass, sort of post glam, but way too much finesse for punk. He would fit in well with early Tubes, Sparks, etc. Cynical rock lyrics. Not too bad, but rather bland by New Wave standards
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:05pm
Ricardo Montalban:
He's found more success as Rod Taylor, as a screenwriter. I bought one of his records decades ago because it had intriguing neo-fascist imagery. It was weird, corporate sounding rock with sardonic, parodic lyrics.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:08pm
tonyc:
Believe it or not, Jimmy Smack is using the bagpipes run through effects.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:08pm
vcs3:
drunk on resident-ial punk!
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:11pm
tonyc:
A good way to be! | |
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:16pm
tonyc:
Did you answer the phone?
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:17pm
Conrad:
is Extended Organ actually Tom Recchion?
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:17pm
Doug S.:
Hello? Hello? Apparently, I'm not here.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:20pm
tonyc:
Conrad: Tom Recchion is a member of of Extended Organ, along with some other LAFMS-ers
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:25pm
tonyc:
The other members being: Fredrik Nilsen, Joe Potts, and the artist Paul McCarthy
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:26pm

|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:28pm
tonyc:
Very romantic, isn't it?
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:28pm
Doug S.:
Welcome to WFM-BLUE! (This track is wonderful.)
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:33pm
Ike:
I always figured "WFM-Blue" would be 24/7 Dirty Duck.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:34pm
Doug S.:
That Chris Newman sounded a lot like Eric Bentley singing Hanns Eisler. Very Brecht-y
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:35pm
holland oats:
with a little ivor cutler thrown in for fun
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:38pm
tonyc:
Oops! Wire's Newman is Colin, of course! My goofy mistake.... I luvs Eric Bentley -- and Ivor too!

|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:45pm
tonyc:
Ivor: You're pretty on top of the latest technology for a dead person.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:48pm
ivor cutler:
and you're very on top of dead persons all day long
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:48pm
Ricardo Montalban:
It was as if the shame of this track would outlive Frank...
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:49pm
tonyc:
He reused bits of this....
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:49pm

|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:53pm
tonyc:
Dunno anything about Felix -- I'm a Top Cat man.
|
Tue. 8/30/11 2:54pm
