Tue. 8/2/11 12:20pm

Playing now: a really rare Mexican cassette-only release from the early '80s. Part of an almost unknown experimental scene south of the border.

Brian in UK:
Hello Tony, Drummer & everbody. No link on front page though. Lose some punters that way!
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:22pm
tahomajohn:
yeah! where is the play this live show button? i am getting Kamikaze radio via the 12k MP3 button on this page:(
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:22pm
tonyc:
It is there, Brian -- but lower down the page than usual, for some strange reason.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:22pm
Brian in UK:
Missed Focus, used to have the single, one of the great yodelling records.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:22pm
G:
I got here from the homepage link, for what it's worth...
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:25pm
tahomajohn:
i mean the 128k button.. not 12k ...anyway, uh, where is the listen to THIS show button on this page...?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:26pm
tonyc:
I was talking about the link to this playlist page! (Just to confuse everybody.)
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:26pm
Doug Schulkind:
The link to the show is now atop the WFMU frontpage. It's lower position was my error. (I'm a little rusty.) To hear the show, use this link: http://wfmu.org/wfmu_drummer.pls

|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:31pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Arturo Meza is amazing! Have you heard his LP Requiem?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:33pm
tonyc:
Ricardo: Nope, haven't heard Requiem, but do have some other stuff of his. Like it, for sure.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:33pm
Ike:
Suggestion: Still need for there to be a way to remove this from the top of your live playlists: "Live Audio Streams: Flash (beta) | 128k MP3 | 32k MP3 | 20k Real | 20k Windows" Because that just gives people the regular-flavor stream and not this here Drummer stream. Also doesn't Amanda put the Drummer stream link at the top of her playlists with her show title? Maybe that would help here?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:34pm
Conrad:
re last week's Pablo Cruise discussion: I actually checked out their biggest hit (" Whatcha Gonna Do") and it was so horrific I had to immediately rinse it out of my head with the most evil noise I could find. Let's just say, they're no Little River Band.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:35pm
tonyc:
Ike: You're right: I should try Amanda's track. Thanks for the suggestion.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:36pm
marcury:
Greetings Tony and all, long time no hear.

Tue. 8/2/11 12:36pm

Hey, Marcury! | |

Brian in UK:
Conrad, to the naughty chair for five minutes. Three if you can desist from mentioning they who shall not be named.

Tue. 8/2/11 12:38pm

Is this a lost David Lynch soundtrack?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:41pm
tonyc:
Mark: Yes, this is from the lost Lynch film about Pablo Cruise.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:41pm
tahomajohn:
Ack.. gotta run.. love your shows Tony.. i will pick up where i left off via archive when i get back ...cheers:)

Tue. 8/2/11 12:46pm
mark:
Mongo Santa Maria! Is that on Netflix?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:49pm
tonyc:
By the by, this is the voice of Adam Bohman.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:50pm
Brian in UK:
Conrad pass the chair to Tony. It's not clever or grownup.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:50pm
Doug Schulkind:
I'm afraid we are stuck with the top of the playlists showing the links for WFMU. This playlist page is generated by WFMU main database. Maybe someday WFMU's computer guru Kenzo can create an alternate playlist page for GTDR streaming shows, but today is not that day. Tony, Amanda puts the URL for the listen link to the stream (http://wfmu.org/wfmu_drummer.pls) atop every playlist. That helps cut down on the confusion. You can put it in the TITLE window if you like.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:52pm
tonyc:
I will definitely start doing that -- thanks, Doug (and Ike).
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:55pm
tonyc:
Brian: Not the electric chair! No....
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:57pm
tonyc:
More Mexican music playing now....
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:58pm
Brian in UK:
No Tony, naughty. It's not PC. Loved the English voice on the Cicada. My daughter kept coming in the room saying there's something wrong with your 'phone!!
|
Tue. 8/2/11 12:58pm
Ike:
I like this track a lot! Yeah, add that one to Kenzo's list, Doug. I'm guessing he has a long list though.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:02pm
tonyc:
Ah, I get you, Brian! Very un-P(ablo) C(ruise) of me....
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:06pm
Brian in UK:
You are forcing me to open a beer & fry some dabs. On your head be it.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:08pm
Brian in UK:
Side Trips & Beacons from Mars?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:09pm
tonyc:
Brian: Have both of those Kaleidoscope albums -- on some future show for sure.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:11pm
Brian in UK:
Tony, you have no idea how difficult they were to get hold of in the early 70s over here.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:13pm
Brian in UK:
Hildegarde of Bingen next? She was a piece of work.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:13pm
Ike:
...the heck are dabs? Are those like poppadoms?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:13pm
tonyc:
Well, your Kaleidoscope wasn't exactly easy to find over here!
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:13pm
tonyc:
Yes, dabnabbit: What are dabs?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:14pm
Brian in UK:
Ike, dabs are small flat fish, like soles or plaice.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:18pm
Ike:
Ah, fascinating. Are these eaten widely in the UK? Maybe with poppadoms? (The TV show Red Dwarf made me think that a lot of people in the UK are obsessed with poppadoms and vindaloo.)
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:18pm
Brian in UK:
It's funny we were trying to fly a kite this weekend past. The connection being Gentle Giant were formerly Simon Dupree & the Big Sound, the big hit being Kites. They took to prog like a dab to water.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:22pm
tonyc:
Brian: Just don't try to fly any small flat fish.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:23pm
Brian in UK:
Well Ike sad to say the most popular dish in this fair country is supposedly Chicken Tikka Masala. The Red Dwarf writers took the piss with abandon. Many people like to eat a curry after an evening on the beer. Most of the curry houses over here are run by Bangladeshis and frankly are spicey with a gloopy sauce. There is some real tasty sub continent food to be had if you look around.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:28pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I love the gloopy, saucey style of Indian food. A friend told me I would probably like the type of Indian food common in the UK.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:30pm
tonyc:
Good Indian food is one of the main things I've been missing since leaving NYC two years ago. Just haven't found a worthy substitute in Portland....
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:30pm
Brian in UK:
We do not make use of our natural resources here. For example, elvers, small Elves. No seriously these are small eels, we export almost all of them to countries lke Spain who appreciate them. Many people over here do not like fish for whatever reason, yet across the English Channel the French revere them. Enough ranting, it's making me thirsty.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:32pm
Brian in UK:
Tony, you'll have to cook your own dishes, once you've built up a store cupboard of spices away you go.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:37pm
Ike:
Eel is tasty. I've eaten good eel at Sichuan restaurants in NYC.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:39pm
Ricardo Montalban:
The only really decent and affordable Indian restaurant in the Portland area - in my opinion - is Abhiruchi's, in nearby Beaverton.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:40pm
tonyc:
Sugar, sugar, you are my candied yam.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:40pm
tonyc:
Thanks, Ricardo! Haven't tried that one....
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:44pm
Ike:
Even the Indian places in NYC seem pretty inconsistent to me. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, and Indian chefs move around frequently, so you can't trust a good one to stay good -- arrrrrrrgh! Jersey City's Newark Ave. (there's a long block that resembles Calcutta) has more reliable Indian food.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:44pm
Amanda:
Hi Tony! Loving the show today -- Archies cover blew my mind. Hope you are well!
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:45pm
Ricardo Montalban:
They've opened one in East Vancouver, WA, but it's probably nearly as far from Ptown as Beaverton.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:45pm
tonyc:
Hey Amanda! Thanks for checking in!!
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:48pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I've eaten at most of Portland's Indian restaurants and felt that the most popular and critically acclaimed ones weren't to my liking. Again, possibly due to me liking a Westernized, apparently English style rather than 'authentic' styles.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:50pm
tonyc:
What I want to try is the Viking food cart on 20th near Sandy (not kidding!)
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:51pm
J J:
I like the appropriately titled album
|
Tue. 8/2/11 1:57pm
tonyc:
Coming up next set: folk psych from a cardiologist.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:02pm
Doug Schulkind:
I prefer my folk psych from dentists. But that's just me.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:05pm
Ricardo Montalban:
OMG! I just saw this album at a Goodwill! I have no idea why I didn't buy it. I think if I remember it looked moldy or something.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:09pm
Hugo:
E pericoloso sporgersi - I remember that phrase from travelling around Europe on rail in younger days. Affixed beneath train windows - meaning (in italian) - it is dangerous to lean out - of the train window, that is. So now you know.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:10pm
tonyc:
Thanks, Hugo!! | |
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:15pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Wow! This track is amazingly awkward.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:16pm
tonyc:
Indeed! | |
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:17pm
tonyc:
Or awkwardly amazing, perhaps?
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:18pm
Ike:
Both! | |
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:19pm
tonyc:
This is supposedly *not" a cover of "Purple Haze," but an "original"!
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:22pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Funny! Almost sounded like they were trying, but couldn't do it.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:23pm
Ricardo Montalban:
I liked a Japanese cover on that great Big Lizard Stomp comp by a band whose name escapes me at the moment. Sung in bad phonetic English
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:25pm
Hugo:
Evidence: http://www.undo.net/Pressrelease/foto/1214838754b.jpg
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:28pm
tonyc:
Thanks, Hugo -- I'll be sure not too lean too far out the window.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:28pm
tonyc:
Ricardo: Cover of "Purple Haze," you mean? Don't know it....
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:36pm
Ricardo Montalban:
It's on a Japanese garage comp. Worth checking out. Silly cover of Hey Joe that's hilarious as well. I think it came out in the late 80's early nineties on an Italian label, If i remember correctly
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:37pm
tonyc:
Just some advanced notice: won't be here in two weeks. It'll be a fill-in show instead, hosted by Archie Patterson, founder (in the early '70s) of Eurock magazine and Eurock distribution.
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:37pm
Ricardo Montalban:
Found it on Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Big-Lizard-Stomp-Volume-Two/release/1841264 I owned this record once, but traded it! On poor-sounding clear vinyl, if I remember
|
Tue. 8/2/11 2:41pm
tonyc:
Here's an interview I did with Archie Patterson for Beware of the Blog: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2009/12/first-dispatch-from-portland-an-interview-with-eurocks-archie-patterson-2.html
