You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Hey! it's time for airborne pleasure. Hello Dan!
Mon. 7/25/11 9:17pm Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Dan and all the listeners.
Mon. 7/25/11 9:26pm Richard from Venezuela:

Great, I love Llut Orhtej
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:26pm Dan B:

Hi All!
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:32pm rex.:

never listened to your show before, wanted to see dj/ruptures show but just stayed on, loving the show so far.
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:32pm Seminal:

hi from near Chicago
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:34pm other david:

Hey dan & listeners from a drizzly Ireland :)
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:36pm Dan B:

@Rex, cool, stick around. @Looms, hey, long time no see -- another holiday? @Seminal, send us some wind, we're dying out here from the heat! @other david, hello to Ireland -- send us some days of drizzling rain!
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:47pm Minnesota Jeff:

Has anyone ever called you Da Bo? Hello, Da Bo! (sorry)
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:47pm other david:

Ah numbers stations, over the internet :)

Almost beats being out in the shed hearing them live on shortwave
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:50pm Looms:

Yes, holiday here. Currently unpacking after a few days spent in south western France; wish I could have sent you some rain too...
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:54pm Dan B:

@Looms, cool, nice to see you around these parts live. @other david, I never found any in my shortwave-listening years -- not that I did a lot of shortwave listening -- and I didn't know they existed back then.@Minnesota Jeff, it's OK. I am frequently called Mr. Dobah by a certain group of friends, I can take it.
  Mon. 7/25/11 9:57pm Joe D.:

Mr Dobahlina Mr Ban Dobahlina
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:02pm other david:

Dan - they've really died out over the last few years, I picked up a radio mainly to hear them.

Russians, Cubans & Poles still broadcast numbers, so do China & NK, but they're really hard to receive here.

No more from UK/US/Germany or Israel. Clip you played was E5 Cynthia - the voice of the US station.

There are some pics up on google of one of the transmitter sites for E5, near Frankfurt, Germany: http://bit.ly/pSe0q8
(yes I am a geek!)
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:04pm Dan B:

Awesome David! Thanks for the info. I guess they've gone digital in the West
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:08pm Tom Miller:

Ah, the numbers stations -- their continuing ethereal presence is one of the last great cryptological mysteries and a sign that the cold war never really ended, just melted a bit
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:09pm other david:

Yep, I suspect they're now getting messages over the net and by satellite and some digital stuff on shortwave too.

Probably right to their blackberrys and iphones :)

Shame, shortwave numbers are so intriguing, the idea that you can actually hear an intelligence agency sending orders.
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:11pm other david:

loadsa my own dodgy shortwave & numbers recordings:

the psyops one down the bottom is a message I copied from a US aircraft to the Libyan Navy a few months ago "Leave your ship immediately" etc etc
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:12pm Tom Miller:

And speaking of encryption, doesn't forcing me to solve math problems before every comment posting violate some statute, like literacy tests for voting registration? If I'm bad at math do I have to post my comments on AM talk radio?
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:17pm damien:

That Twig Harper ---> Tones on Tail was really nice. Thank you
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:19pm Tom Miller:

Hi Sarah, hi Dan. After your discussion of band names I'm dimly recalling an old tv show where a batch of yuppies showed up at a Butthole Surfers because there was a typo in the ad that said "Buttonhole Surfers"... they got slammed in the mosh pit... and an "A-Team" where they thought Boy George was Cowboy George.
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:19pm other david:

  Mon. 7/25/11 10:20pm Needles:

wait....I just tuned in....what did he play with number stations?
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:25pm other david:

Needles: Conet Project - Counting Control aka E5 Cynthia

I'm just having fun trying to think what other bandnames Dan wont play :)
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:28pm rex.:

i have to head out dan. this was a great find see you next week!
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:30pm Dan B:

@rex., thanks for stopping by -- see you again!
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:30pm sudo:

Tom Miller: was that first show you mention live action, or animated?
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:31pm Dan B:

@Tom, yes, I wasn't at that Buttonhole Surfers show but I should have been
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:32pm Looms:

Ok, the Toure/Diabate is gonna be my path to dreamland. Thanks for the great music as always. See you!
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:34pm other david:

Goodnight looms
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:34pm Dan B:

Ciao Looms
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:36pm Dan B:

@Tom -- re your right to not do math -- you funny! BTW, we need to get together to talk about music and your trip sometime soon. S and the kids are going away this weekend on vacation, so I'll have more time in the evenings. Come by and see our new place!
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:39pm Marmalade kitty:

  Mon. 7/25/11 10:41pm Dan B:

@MK, hello!
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:47pm other david:

Dan, how did you first hear of Jozef Van Wissem?

You must have turned hundreds of us onto his music over the last months and years, it's great stuff :)
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:48pm other david:

Ooops, Obama just DDoS'ed the Congress servers http://bit.ly/qqj41a
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:49pm Dan B:

@David, heard Jozef first because he sent me a couple of CDs in the mail at the station. Then I kept my eyes open for his albums whenever they came out and have loved everything he's done. Glad to hear my Wissemvangelism is working.
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:52pm Marmalade kitty:

  Mon. 7/25/11 10:54pm Tom Miller:

@Dan, will do. Can't wait to see what you do with the new place left to your own devices.
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:56pm Marmalade kitty:

snap out of it man!
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:58pm Ike:

Anybody else find this Chris Mann garble... a bit nauseating? I don't know why, but my stomach is turning.
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:58pm other david:

you got to him just in time marmalade kitty!
  Mon. 7/25/11 10:59pm Marmalade kitty:

  Mon. 7/25/11 10:59pm damien:

  Mon. 7/25/11 11:00pm Ike:

Whew! Thanks to the Accuplaylist 9000 for letting me know it's safe to come back now! That was a fascinating physiological effect, but any mofe of that and the cookies might've gone flying.
  Mon. 7/25/11 11:00pm Marmalade kitty:

  Mon. 7/25/11 11:01pm other david:

Chris Mann put to Dubstep would really get the crowd going
  Mon. 7/25/11 11:03pm Marmalade kitty:

  Mon. 7/25/11 11:09pm damien:

  Mon. 7/25/11 11:09pm other david:

  Mon. 7/25/11 11:28pm Dan B:

  Mon. 7/25/11 11:37pm other david:
