@Rex, cool, stick around. @Looms, hey, long time no see -- another holiday? @Seminal, send us some wind, we're dying out here from the heat! @other david, hello to Ireland -- send us some days of drizzling rain!

Ah numbers stations, over the internet :) Almost beats being out in the shed hearing them live on shortwave
|
Mon. 7/25/11 9:50pm

Yes, holiday here. Currently unpacking after a few days spent in south western France; wish I could have sent you some rain too...
|
Mon. 7/25/11 9:54pm
Dan B:
@Looms, cool, nice to see you around these parts live. @other david, I never found any in my shortwave-listening years -- not that I did a lot of shortwave listening -- and I didn't know they existed back then.@Minnesota Jeff, it's OK. I am frequently called Mr. Dobah by a certain group of friends, I can take it.

Dan - they've really died out over the last few years, I picked up a radio mainly to hear them. Russians, Cubans & Poles still broadcast numbers, so do China & NK, but they're really hard to receive here. No more from UK/US/Germany or Israel. Clip you played was E5 Cynthia - the voice of the US station. There are some pics up on google of one of the transmitter sites for E5, near Frankfurt, Germany: http://bit.ly/pSe0q8 (yes I am a geek!)

Awesome David! Thanks for the info. I guess they've gone digital in the West

Tom Miller:
Ah, the numbers stations -- their continuing ethereal presence is one of the last great cryptological mysteries and a sign that the cold war never really ended, just melted a bit
|
Mon. 7/25/11 10:09pm
other david:
Yep, I suspect they're now getting messages over the net and by satellite and some digital stuff on shortwave too. Probably right to their blackberrys and iphones :) Shame, shortwave numbers are so intriguing, the idea that you can actually hear an intelligence agency sending orders.

other david:
loadsa my own dodgy shortwave & numbers recordings: http://soundcloud.com/davidbmee the psyops one down the bottom is a message I copied from a US aircraft to the Libyan Navy a few months ago "Leave your ship immediately" etc etc

And speaking of encryption, doesn't forcing me to solve math problems before every comment posting violate some statute, like literacy tests for voting registration? If I'm bad at math do I have to post my comments on AM talk radio?

Hi Sarah, hi Dan. After your discussion of band names I'm dimly recalling an old tv show where a batch of yuppies showed up at a Butthole Surfers because there was a typo in the ad that said "Buttonhole Surfers"... they got slammed in the mosh pit... and an "A-Team" where they thought Boy George was Cowboy George.
