Zülfü Livaneli Interview + Concert Previews & Mixed Bag

Hear this show now: | Add or read comments

Tonight we chat with a Turkish cultural icon: Singer-songwriter / soundtrack composer / poet / novelist / playwright / newspaper columnist / film director / leftist politician / UNESCO goodwill ambassador Zülfü Livaneli. The multi-multi-talented artist is known on the music side for his contemporary interpretations of traditional songs. Livaneli is headlining the third annual Istanbulive concert, Friday June 17 at Central Park Summerstage (where Turkish pop rock band maNga and the the NY Gypsy All Stars will share the bill).

Note - our interview was recorded several months ago when Livaneli was in New York for a UNESCO / UN visit. That's our excuse anyway for not making reference to the Turkish elections on Sunday June 12 - even though we touch on some issues (such as free speech) that are relevant to the election.

A note from Your DJ: During this longest excerpt from the interview I misspeak by referring to honor killing as being brought on by something a person "has done" that brings 'dishonor' to a family. But the real issue is that more commonly (and especially tragically) it's actually because of something that's been done to a person, NOT something the person has done of her own volition. And what we're mainly referring to is the terrible situation where women are subjected to honor killing after having been raped.
