The Whines live at WFMU

The Whines are a garage band from Portland Oregon with ties to Michigan and maybe also Alaska. The trio of Karianne (Vox/Bass) Jesse (guitar) and Bobby (drums) has released music on three great Portland-based labels (Gnar Tapes, Just For the Hell Of It, and Meds Records). The latter released their debut LP 'Hell To Play,' which was recorded in collaboration Rob & Rod from Eat Skull, and Kyle from Meth Teeth / Meercaz. With a new 7" ("Shootinhead" b/w "Straybird") on Mt St Mtn, The Whines stopped by WFMU on May 22nd during their 1st North/East Coast tour

Sun Araw  Deep Cover   Favoriting On Patrol  Not Not Fun  Sun Araw = LIVE on WFMU next Thursday morning!! Fresh off appearances at Montreal's Mutek (June 2nd) and WFMU's 2011 SXSW showcase, Sun Araw takes a first-ever trip to the WFMU studios for a live session! Originally envisioned as a solo project from Magic Lanterns' Cameron Stallones, Sun Araw has evolved into a full band live performance experience alongside a flood of releases from labels like Not Not Fun, Woodsist, Leaving Records, and Araw's own Sun Ark.

Sun Araw's East Coast visit includes shows at Brooklyn's Coco 66 (June 3rd), 285 Kent St (June 4th), 108 Leonard St NYC (June 6th), and caps off with an incredible Maxwell's bill June 7th in Hoboken along with Daniel Higgs, Deep Magic, Excepter, and M. Geddes Gengras.

If the stars align, M. Geddes Gengras -- a frequent Sun Araw collaborator -- will also grace us with a live performance of modular synth/moog. "It's super cosmic, deeply spiritual" says Cameron Stallones. Join us!

Soup Yet = GNFAB

I gotta no image for the Max B entry. And sometimes that has the teasing urgency/insistence of a ringing phone behind a locked door.

dc pat:

We have a cottage on Golden Lake, near Iron River. 1 month away from relaxation.
  11:30am
Problem Solver:

Q: What if WFMU had showers, graveyard shift jocks used long tracks for taking showers, and then a record started to skip for like fifteen minutes while they were out of the studio?

A: Easy. When you notice the problem, just switch the playlist to say Bryce or Kenny G is flling in.
  11:30am
Cecile:

Iron River!
Do you ever get over by Houghton. I know a couple of food places that will knock your socks off.
  11:36am

  11:37am
Cecile:

  11:39am
Carmichael:

Stevie, we ALL wish we could sing.
  11:40am
Cecile:

Keweenaw Brewing Company for beer
Ambassador for great sandwiches on French bread

Drive up to the top of US-41 hill in Hancock to Peterson's Fish Market - they have a dynamite fish fry - the kids went to the Culinary Institute and came back to cook.

And if you go all the way up to Laurium to the Michigan House, they make some great beer (if they don't run out). Also, most of their food is excellent.
  11:41am
annie:

cecile!!!!!!!! cheri!!! carm!!!! who did i miss?
  11:41am
Cecile:

Is R Stevie coming to the midwest?
  11:42am
Cecile:

Do not let anyone talk you into going to The Library in Houghton - it hasn't been any good since it burned down and got remodeled in the mid 90s.

  11:44am
Cheri Pi:

Cecile I'm adding this info to our itinerary!
  11:45am
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Jason, is the Ariel Pink session available for download on Fma?
  11:45am
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Earth):

Jason, is the Ariel Pink session available for download on Fma?
  11:47am
Carmichael:

Hi Annie!
  11:48am
Cecile:

Good coffeehouses there are Cyberia in Houghton and the 5th Street Station coffeehouses in Hancock and Calumet and the Keewenaw co-op in Hancock has great coffee and is good to stock up on the essentials.

record shopping is non-existent except I've found some great records in this thrift store called The Yard Sale in Laurium. Dusty as hell, lots of crap, but you can find some gems there - mostly exotica and clean copies of classic rock records.
  11:51am
Bill:

Hey what's this awesome background music?
  11:52am
Cecile:

Get great pastys at Roy's in Houghton. They make smaller sized ones which is great for us smaller appetites.

A great but weird place on M-28 (I think) is the Toivola Lunch. It's this lunch counter in the back of a rundown gas station. If you're driving through Toivola on the main drag, you'll see a blue and white building that says "lunch". they make all their own bread, and their food is dirt cheap. And simple and delicious.
  11:53am
Cecile:

I can give you the rundown for Marquette, but that's not as up to date, haven't been there in 5 years.
  11:54am
Cheri Pi:

Cool-I can't say that I've ever visited a coffee house or a restaurant worth mentioning there, it's always been pasty-shacks & bait stands for the most part. I'm really looking forward to visiting these places.
  11:55am
Cheri Pi:

Yes-give me the run down on Marquette-we always go through there.
  12:00pm
DJ Terre T:

THE OBITS are gunna be live on my show THIS Sat June 4 btwn 3-6pm (not TimesNew Viking as it is mistakenly listed for some reason on Upcoming!)
