Listener comments!

  11:55am
Carmichael:

Ha ha, I found this list early!! Can't wait for random musical pre-rapture music.
  12:02pm
Cecile:

Bonjour Bob W!
  12:05pm
Ike:

This already sounds great.
  12:09pm
Carmichael:

Yes, it does. Where else can you hear cartoon soundtracks distorted? How about some early Hanna Barbera??
  12:10pm
maja:

ah the man with the cat, loved that last show you did in jan. i'll be there
  12:12pm
bobw:

hey yous guys! nice to be back!
  12:13pm
eric:

reminds me a bit of stock, hausen & walkman ... which i haven't heard in forever. show is off to a fab start. thanks!
  12:14pm
still b/p:

Montage of original visuals corresponding exactly to the sound use & manipulation would sweeten the satisfaction even more.
  12:23pm
Cecile:

I can't believe Vicki has been doing People Like Us for so long! 20 years! You can tell by the quality of her craft. I'm so impressed.
  12:27pm
still b/p:

Second that. I was just thinking about the time and shaping involved. Even with the tools of today allowing much faster work and easier revision than in ye olde editing days, 'at's a LOTTA effort! With great results.
  12:28pm
frenchee:

what sprightly bed music you have, DJ BobW!
  12:31pm
bobw:

bert kaempfert is my favorite back-announce music. yummy!
  12:31pm
Carmichael:

I was just playing with some editing software this weekend, and it was a pain in the ass. It takes a lot of patience, organizational skills, and dedication to the vision of your finished product. None of which I possess, which is why I gave up. Kudos to Vicki!
  12:32pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Bob and all the listeners.
  12:36pm
Cecile:

Yeah, the other week I tried to make some "simple" dance beats. I gotta say, the crappiest dance producer has way more skillz than I do.
  12:42pm
still b/p:

Bert Kaempfert was among the temptations on the Goodwill LP shelf the other day. But without an active turntable. resistance is easier.
  12:44pm
Carmichael:

I scored some Andre Kostelantz the other day, as well as a learn-how-to-type LP. Bad tiki music and pica peck-peck go wonderfully together.
  12:49pm
Cecile:

wow! This is Antietam these days?
  12:54pm
dc pat:

Cecile: it's easier just to record acoustic drums and go from there..
  12:59pm
still b/p:

Speaking of Goodwill buys -- Still waiting for a playlist opportunity to quote a Paul Revere and Raiders album jacket sometime. Purchased it just for the big hoot, four-star jacket blather, especially the Mark Lindsay stroke-fest.
  1:02pm
dc pat:

Say, that Mark Lindsay was a pretty awesome singer, huh? How do you all feel about him?
  1:03pm
Cecile:

I like Mark Lindsay a lot. Which album is it still b/p?
  1:06pm
dc pat:

same here Cecile. tryin to provide the opportunity b/p referred to.
  1:06pm
Carmichael:

I like Mark Lindsay's solo stuff. Silverbird was a huge wall of sound production that impressed me, as was Arizona. I dig sunshine pop.
  1:07pm
Handsome Harry:

Well, I know what I'm having for lunch now.
  1:08pm
still b/p:

Well...*tucks tail*...now with TWO of the very opps right in the ol' face, I have to report the album esta en casa, no esta aqui en trabajo. Maybe I can toss the goods into Ken's show manana where it'll be a contender for non sequitur of the day.
  1:08pm
Cecile:

nuts to, I mean, for you.
  1:09pm
Carmichael:

HA HA HA!! What a great song.
  1:11pm
Bad Ronald:

BEER!!!
  1:12pm
maja:

oh now i am thirsty
  1:21pm
dc pat:

oh man!!! I love Brooklyn Brewery!!! SHIT. Why doesn't DC have good beer?? ...or radio??
  1:21pm
Cecile:

It's that cheap at Ken's Den in Calumet, Mi between 11 a.m. - and 7 p.m. But you don't really want to drink the beer there. Or even be there.
  1:21pm
Cecile:

Don't they have that prog rock themed brew pub?
  1:22pm
Carmichael:

Today is Tuesday, and that means $2.50 pints all day and night at my favorite micro brew. Thanks for the reminder, Bob!!
  1:27pm
Cecile:

Clay Pigeon! What are you doing here?
  1:28pm
Amanda:

Bob W.!!!!! It's nice to hear you.
  1:28pm
still b/p:

In South Africa last month, beer choices were slim, and at a hotel bar, I drank, of all things, a Carling Black Label! A name I hadn't even heard in the US since long ago.
  1:28pm
Carmichael:

He he ... Clay would play Styx next.
  1:31pm
Carmichael:

Boy, you'd think SA would have a ton of beer, given the climate. I used to drink a beer called Mamba, but I don't know which part of Africa it was from.
  1:33pm
bobw:

DC used to have my favorite brewpub in the world, BARDO in arlington. but that's long, long gone capitol city isn't bad. and there's a dogfish head brewpub not far out of DC. and dominion isn't so bad.
  1:34pm
still b/p:

There's some SA microbrew activity, I guess, but sadly no signs or sips of it at all in the places I stopped. I wondered if it was ripe for a better beer boom.
  1:36pm
dc pat:

Bardo was ok, had my reception party there. don't like capitol city--dogfish would be good but why should I go out of the city do drink? I have a bar in my own neighborhood that specializes in bourbon...
  1:37pm
Carmichael:

I remember Jo-Burg having a spit-it-out-immediately awful beer called Victoria Bitters. the US equivalent would probably be Keystone.
  1:38pm
Cecile:

What brewpub in dc wsa the one who made the King Crimson inspired beer?
  1:39pm
bobw:

BOURBON! for my b-d my gal got me a little jug of maple syrup that was aged in a bourbon cask, and it's more sick than you can imagine.
  1:39pm
paul:

oh yay, i just noticed you were on. super!
  1:40pm
BSI:

*wakes up suddenly* ..... urh? beer?
  1:41pm
still b/p:

"South Africa...Where a leopard is easier to find than a decent beer."
  1:42pm
dc pat:

bobw: that sounds amazing.
Cecile: hmm, dunno.
  1:43pm
Carmichael:

I just tasted a honey bourbon porter that was aged the same way. If you were blindfolded, you'd swear you were smelling a glass of bourbon.
  1:43pm
john:

agree, capital city brewery kind sucks. dogfish head would be OK except its in a strip mall in virginia.. depressing. I like Galaxy Hut in courthouse/clarendon for beer selection
  1:44pm
zoot:

dc pat - If you're hankering to move on to single malts, head up to the Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton for tons of swell, peaty beverages from Scotland and the Misty Isles.
  1:45pm
still b/p:

Allagash Brewery makes a Curieux aged eight weeks in Jim Beam barrels. Mm, good, but not for volume drinking.
  1:46pm
dc pat:

john: let me be clear--I'M WALKING. if it's more than a mile away from 20007, forget it.
zoot: see above, but I'm more of a bourbon/Irish whiskey guy.
  1:46pm
dc pat:

I like Galaxy Hut though.
  1:47pm
Carmichael:

From Brew It Up in Sacramento: Bourbon Barrel Honey Porter. This robust porter is fermented and aged in select Bourbon Barrels direct from the Heaven Hills Distillery, the whiskey, oak and vanilla notes of the barrels
intertwine with caramel, chocolate and roasted malts while the strength of the beer (9%) is boosted by the addition of varietal Starthistle Honey, 6/10oz snifter.
  1:47pm
Joe:

Hey Bob
They actually just annouced yesterday that the new version of Wonder Woman would not be picked up
  1:48pm
john:

dc pat: didn't mean to ruffle your feathers.. brickskeller has a million bears, but also a frat guy crowd...
  1:50pm
dc pat:

john: I use to go there, right. Little out of my range is RFD. But what I want is a Brooklyn-league brewery, brew-pub that I'd get in a taxi for.
  1:51pm
Cecile:

What about these folks?
http://www.desjardinbrewing.com/2009/12/starless-and-bible-black.html
  1:52pm
john:

yeah, i hear you.. i moved back to Brooklyn from DC a little over a year ago.. Six Point brewery is doing tallboys now.. so maybe they'll get them in DC soon
  1:53pm
dc pat:

churchkey is kind of cool--too trendy though.
  1:54pm
Cecile:

that's the one, churchkey!
  1:55pm
john:

oh.. yeah, 14th street right? i was there recently on a visit to DC. was a bit pseudo-upscale for me... but decent selection
  1:56pm
BSI:

Meridian Pint in my 'hood does pretty well, decent variety of taps etc. But we're still not there yet, considering how overcrowded EVERY place gets. The pub-to-population ratio is still turned on its head somewhat.
  1:56pm
dc pat:

yep, that's the place. Special occasion joint
  1:56pm
Cecile:

people forget how funny Morrissey used to be.
  1:57pm
john:

i think there is a new BBQ type beer garden place right around the corner from blackcat now... so i hear.. but i didn't make it there
  1:57pm
dc pat:

huh, don't know about that one. I'll look for it next time.
  1:58pm
john:

also.. if you can bear to go to georgetown.. i always like the selection at paradiso, and that downstairs bar
  2:00pm
dc pat:

yeah, g-town...never went there specifically to drink brew.
  2:02pm
john:

i think it's called Standard - the new place that is.. yeah, georgetown is the worst, used to work there. but the beer selection at Pizzeria Paradiso might be the best in the city that i can recall
  2:04pm
dc pat:

really??? jeeze, I'd think Brickskellar or RFD could make that claim. Deff going to check it out now. I just never spend any time in gtown.
  2:07pm
john:

well, they have less stuff than brickskellar for sure. but more focus on american craft beers... maybe 15 on tap, and even more bottles/cans, and they change it up often. Brickskellar does the whole beers of the world thing.. so you end up with 4,000 pilsner variations.. can't remember if i've been to RFD though...
  2:08pm
dc pat:

good point, see what you mean. RFD is about the same (same guys??) but they do like Belgian beer.
  2:09pm
john:

oh china town, right? yeah, i know that place
  2:10pm
listener mark:

did the crane arrive?
  2:12pm
jaycjay:

Reading all that beer talk is making me pretty happy that I live in Brooklyn.
  2:15pm
john:

jaycjay - yes! it's true, in brooklyn you don't even really need to know where the good spots are.. so many options
  2:15pm
zoot:

dc pat - If you don't mind hopping on the metro, The Quarry House in Silver Spring has a nice selection and is very low on the pretension scale.
  2:17pm
seang:

what's goin on in Montreal?
  2:17pm
dc pat:

ah yes, still haven't been to the Quarry House...some day.
  2:19pm
dc pat:

c'mon MCA!! man I'm starting to thank my lucky stars everyday, thanks stars.
  2:20pm
zm:

Hi Bob, thank you. always mentioning Times UP events on the show.
  2:20pm
Carmichael:

That place around the corner from Black Cat is called Standard (I did a little googling). Here you go: http://www.standarddc.com/
  2:22pm
dc pat:

OH YEah, that's RIGHT around the corner from Black Cat. Passed a bunch of times and wondered what it was. Not a good name for a joint.
  2:25pm
seang:

hey dc pat--remember that out-of-tune Ringo song that had you crying ---that still cracks me up!
  2:26pm
BSI:

Haven't been to the Quarry House in decades. I understand that the new owners did quite an overhaul to the menu/beer/whiskey selection while keeping it fairly real...
  2:27pm
dc pat:

seang, yeah been meaning to acquire that..
  2:28pm
Carmichael:

I don't know how you pulled off this segue, Bob. I never would have thought of mixing Darlene Love with Eprhyme ....
  2:28pm
zoot:

Quarry House is real from the rafters to the sticky floor. Great juke box and live music with properly poor acoustics.
  2:31pm
Ike:

I've never heard that entire Darlene Love song. The really interesting bit, "just because he doesn't do/ what everybody else does..." is sampled and looped over and over again somewhere, but where? I can't recall. Anyone?
  2:34pm
BSI:

Sounds like some great stylophone abuse there for a minute. Me dig.
  2:34pm
Cecile:

No. I have never heard it looped, just the whole song. Unless maybe People Like Us sampled it? Or DIlla?
  2:36pm
Ike:

I was just wondering if it was PLU but now I don't think so. Not sure though.
  2:44pm
Ike:

Oof! Bob W. just said who sampled it but I missed it. Wally something? Wall*E from Pixar?
  2:45pm
bobw:

wobbly, i think.
  2:47pm
Ike:

Thanks Bob W.! Oh, and great TTH selection. Never heard that one.
  2:48pm
bobw:

no, correction: Bran Flakes Mutual Admiration and Love va: This is Ovenguard Vol. 1
  2:51pm
Carmichael:

Gotta run. Thanks for the tune-age, Bob. Don't forget to drink beer, everyone!
  2:53pm
still b/p:

And to those souls bound for rapture after just a few more sun-ups, we sing, "In heaven, there is no...."
  2:35am
yXIMALLOO:

Thank you!

2 months later as Tokyo Electric Co.
WFMU started to play "Tom and Gerry" finally after I already sent it in FEB.

Wow!

Yximalloo will come to New York in OCT.
  4:09am
Michael:
