Billy Jam:

Welcome to the first in a 3 part May 2011 series of WFMU live remotes from San Francisco in conjunction with the KUSF In Exile folks. This week and the next two weeks will be broadcast live from the SF Bay View district's Light Rail Studios where, since March, KUSF In Exile DJs (kidked out of their own FM studios @ USF on Januarty 18th) have been broadcasting daily from online (the fight to SAVE KUSF & get it back on the FM dial rages on) with help from WFMU who, in a show of solidarity, have provided KUSF In Exile with free broadband space (listen anytime at SaveKUSF dot org). So this means that these 3 shows will be streamed twice online at savekusf dot org & of course here at wfmu dot org + on the WFMU FM dial in NJ. Each week I will be joined by KUSF DJs who will spin sets or else bring in guests from the Bay Area radio/music scene such as KZSU's longtime hip-hop DJ Kevvy Kev who will be among today's guests. Each week I will have 3 main guests doing 45 minutes of programming each. I will do the other 45 minutes -at the start of each week - either spinning my own music or having a special guest spin or maybe talk. Today Kenya Lewis - one of the most active people in the Save KUSF movement - will join me on my (opening) 45 minute segment. Other guests today will include David Bassin, Irwin, and David Ford. Thanks for listening to WFMU and KUSF In Exile

  3:30pm
Ike:

I've been loving listening to KUSF in Exile. Sadly the history of FCC decisions strongly indicates very little hope for KUSF getting back on 90.3... they'll probably say, yet again, that they don't get involved in format changes, and ignore the rest of the issues here... sigh. :(

  3:55pm
Regina:

@Ike: The non commercial, educational portion of the FM spectrum was put there for a reason. This was back in the days when nationwide radio station feeds cost a fortune. Licenses were granted to operators who operted a single station or a small group of stations in the same state, etc. No one foresaw cheap transmission, which made it possible for people who wanted big salaries to start a "non profit" network of radio stations. There are no stockholders who are getting big bucks. Just the administrators of these non-profits that are getting big bucks put into their direct deposit checking accounts. Its time for the FCC to wake up and smell the coffee.
  3:56pm
Cecile:

THIS is what I'm talking about. I think NPR can do indie music all right, but the real artistry, the real innovation in programming is being done by independent radio.
  3:56pm
Radioman:

This acoustic kind of test pattern is absolutly awesome!
  3:56pm
Cecile:

Great set, David.
  3:59pm
zephir:

save kusf/kusf in exile PROBABLY shouldn't have made it this far. Too much progress to be totally cynical at this point. good show, everyone.
  4:01pm
zephir:

did i say good show? i meant great show. my bad.
  4:01pm
Ike:

@Regina, I agree and I sure hope the FCC will wake up, but I am a pessimist about radio sometimes. Thank Dog that FMU got ahold of its own license long ago.
  4:02pm
chris:

Thank Ken that FMU got ahold its license a long time ago! Viva Ken!
  4:04pm

Billy -- you are sounding a little quiet on mic...
  5:07pm

Find it hard to believe Billy has been in the States so long - that accent is still so Irish (with just a slight American twang!)

northguineahills:

Wow! I've never have heard this Don Cherry before. Awesome!
  5:14pm
luz:

Hello from Buenos Aires, argentina.
  5:18pm
ben drinken:

he sounds more northern irish to me for some reason. don't know his background. but i think most irish people who came to either canada or u.s. over the long years ago were from southern ireland. that might be how americans think an irish accent is homogenized but is not
  5:22pm
Nat the Parker:

any1 feelin some J Boogie?? bay area!
  5:22pm
Cecile:

Hey! A Zion I track is on the iPod game DJ Rivals. That's what i was going to post. Hip-hoppers, get your tracks on DJ Rivals, it's like DJ Hero but for iPhone.
  5:22pm
other david:

Ben - it's Dublin, might have even been what we call a "D4" accent in its original form :)) (don't hit me Billy!)
  5:22pm
julia:

I'm an old friend of Shawn Bates, living here in Jersey after many years in SF.... least i get to hear you this way! Always loved Billy Jams.

  5:26pm
Princess Cake:

save KUSF!
  5:29pm
ben drinken:

oh, ok other david. always wondered about the different accents from ireland because tv and movies seem to only cast the leprican and green eyed folks speaking twang. but i do know there is a difference in how people speak in the north and south of ireland. funny, most americans don't realize the difference between the two historicaally. the orange and the green. they think they are to wear green on the 17th of march and drink a lot. one of the highest dui days of the year. dumb. just because they think they are irish and it's time to drink.
  5:32pm
other david:

Basically Irish accents differ wildly every 10 miles :)

Yep there are historical differences, but when it boils down to modern culture, we're the same really and differences have to be forgotten about.

Anyway, loving this set!
  5:33pm
northguineahills:

Is this Billy Ocean's son? jaja.
