Billy Jam:
Photo on top of playlist is titled "Girl's Finishing School" and one on lower part is "Children's Ward." Both of these and all the others that will appear on today's playlist are taken by Weird NJ photographer Rusty Tagliareni who, along with publisher & friend of WFMU Mark Moran, will be today's guests. The photos are from the recently published Weird NJ special issue "FORSAKEN: Abandoned In And Around New Jersey" and will be on display at Maxwell's in Hoboken starting May 16th for one month. I will try and post captions alongside each photo to give you an idea of what they are/where they are from. If you have any questions about any of them - enter them here on the comments. The interview will start at about 415pm (local NJ time)

Like the photos too. I wonder if Rusty Tagliareni's work is based on absence or decay.

Billy Jam - really enjoying your mix this afternoon. Love the Jon Stewart "non-bomshell" clip too. And as for Weird NJ, I saw that website a few years ago and actually visited a few spots. The Pine Barrens are certainly up there on the list. There was also a supposed haunted clock tower outside of Tenafly that was worth the visit too. Love the photos you posted. Beautiful decay.

@aaron, no need to include & or anything after that in Yoohootube links. Actually you can just put youtu.be/ and then the string of 10 or 11 characters between the = and the &. So yr link becomes: http://youtu.be/AX5CtqKX_pU Easy to fit into tiny spaces like here or Twtr.

Listener Noah:
The "law of water" actually refers to Maritime Jurisdiction, as opposed to the "law of the land," i.e., the common law. The track is taken from a popular YouTube "conspiracy" video (well, it's only if it's a conspiracy if it's illegal) .

there's also the totally overgrown old "Farm Colony" pauper's hospital complex, where the city used to put charity cases, by Seaview Hospital on Staten Island

They've probably already been to the old Eastern States Penitentiary in Philly, which you can actually tour, but is basically in its abandoned state,.

wish the two marks could do another show for tv. the weird us on the history channel was it? was not good, not because of them but maybe the wrong network and producers.

marq:
these photos on the playlist are stunning. holy crap! my favorite thing about weird NJ is the old buildings stories and the long gone and seemingly quickly abandoned shit, but left untouched by anyone else but time and decay

wonder what would happen if you brought back a person who was one of the kids in this place during the heyday of this place. And maybe he or she would have fond memories.

Loving the show as always - having a best friend who played in AOD helped, but I was onto the Weird NJ mag early on. Features like the Jackson Whites were wiggin' us out for years. BTW, you could play straight hip hop all show long and I'd love it, but it rules when you throw those dance, funk and punk 'palate cleansers' in too. Thanks for puttin' all my food on the same plate!
|
Fri. 4/29/11 5:41pm
ben drinken:
speaking of food on a plate. imagine eating some tacos in these buildings from the pics. does it make you want a vendor just outside the door of these buildings?

we should tax the flag. any time someone wants to fly the U.S. flag either on their shirt or in the air we should tax that. people use the flag too much. tax it.

that reminds me, I'd better get a beer into me before shutup weirdo starts! :)
|
Fri. 4/29/11 5:57pm
ben drinken:
yes, Ike. but i suppose there would end up being a tax break for rich people who flew the flag on their steps or wore it as a lapel fixture.
